Just Add Snow

Minneapolis Window Boxes
Yo budz! I am gettin’ my holiday decorating on, up in here! I just finished putting together this year’s window boxes. I even added some lights, woah, getting so crazy over here. Anyway, I just wanted to check in – I feel that it is my duty to be your own personal holiday cheerleader. I need to make sure that you guys are getting as amped for the holidays as I am? So, are you?

I’m pretty happy with the outdoor holiday situation this year, I think it turned out pretty good even though I really didn’t change it up that much from last year. I’m turning into a bit of old lady with the outside decor, I just stick with your basic evergreen window boxes. I am a big admirer of all my neighbors, and their pretty boxes, and I love garland – I had big dreams of swagging the crap out of the front of the house this year. That didn’t happen, I’m an old lady, and I’m comfortable with my window boxes, okay?

You guys, I love this time of year so much!

Hope you guys all have a safe and happy Thanksgiving weekend! I’ve already got the bird brining – things are smelling good. See you next week for my b-day (I’m so excited, I’m sure you are too)!

Your window boxes are so cute! I have some on my house and they are the bane of my existence. Dumb question: How do you get those li’l evergreens to stand up so straight in there? I tried to put some in my boxes last year (most likely inspired by you!) but the dirt wouldn’t hold them up straight and I quickly gave up. Is there a trick?

      Hey Anne!
I don’t really have a tried and true way to do this, but this is what I do. I start with fresh potting soil. That means your window boxes need to be free of any old soil from the summer before. If you do have old soil – try and clean out the top layer of soil if you can, this will help hold your spruce tips in place.

Once you get your tips in your box, and your boxes are looking pretty – give the old box a good watering. This will allow the dirt to freeze, and your tips should be frozen in place in a few short hours. That doesn’t mean they won’t fall over, you’ll have to keep a close eye on them for 1-2 hours after you arrange your boxes while the tips are freezing in place.

      Hope that helps, good luck!
