Deuce Cities Henhouse One Room Challenge Reveal
Hey Guys! We made it! Today I’m sharing my final reveal of my One Room Challenge! This has been quite the journey. I went into the ORC thinking that it would be good motivation for a spring project but I had no idea how intense of a challenge it would be – this is serious work ma’ friends!

In case you’re new here, I spent the last 5 or so weeks in my guest bedroom, restoring old windows, stripping poorly painted doors, building a custom bed with an Ikea hack, building a very cool sculptural brass wall trellis, adding DIY lighting, and installing custom shelves.

This was my time first participating in the challenge! If you’re not familiar, the One Room Challenge is hosted by Calling it Home in partnership with House Beautiful and Home Love Network and is a 6 week challenge to makeover one room in your home. There is tons, and tons of inspiration that comes out of this challenge – and I always love following the 20 featured designers and checking on nearly 200 guests participants (which I am one of). Please check and see what the other folks are up to!

Before & After!
Adding a sculptural trellis to the far wall, not only creates interest but functions as a place to train vines. Repeating elements like the greenery from the plants makes different parts of the room relate to one another – the shelf above the bed is the perfect spot to display more plants and facilitate this repeating element.

The Challenge

This space came with a lot of big challenges! Funny enough the biggest challenge was its small size. The room is roughly 10′ x 10′ feet and has a few obstacles which makes furniture placement, especially a bed, very difficult. There are two doors, one radiator, and a rather large set of windows that I had to design around. I’ve tried the bed in all configurations, but it works best for the flow of the room on the wall with the radiator, howevs designing a bed around a radiator came with its own set of challenges. Let’s continue with the reveal, shall we?

Creating Cohesion

After really considering the problem of squeezing the bed onto the same wall as the radiator, I decided that the best way to create cohesion in the space, and make the wall feel connected was to add a big beefy shelf to float above the bed and the radiator. Mimicking the other woodwork on the second floor of our home, I left the wood natural. The shelf becomes the base for ever growing plant collection as well as a mirror, candles and other small decorative items.

Before & After
A lot has changed, but a lot has remained the same! Making over this room also meant restoring the 108 year old windows and stripping paint off the poorly painted doors.

The Brass Trellis

Because this room is south facing, it has always been a place where I put my sun loving plants, they thrive in the space. When making over this room I didn’t want to have to kick out the plants. I also had a big blank wall without the budget to fill it with large scale art. It soon dawned on me that the same materials I was using to make lamps could be used to make a sculptural wall trellis that my plants could grow on. All the WINS! Would you guys like to see the brass trellis come to the kit shop?

Window Restoration

The windows in this bedroom were the roughest in the house. I imagine that part of the reason for their wear was due to the constant exposure from the south facing sun, which causes the wood to dry out and paint finishes to deteroiorate. It was in need of some TLC. I removed the sashes, replaced the sash cords, sanded rough spots, and painted the windows for protection from the sun as well as for looks. Find all the details and a in-depth tutorial on replacing sash cords in this post.

Paint Stripping & The Doors

As I mentioned, this room has two doors, the door to the hallway and the closet door. All of the doors in our house have suffered at the hands of many coats of paint. The details in our foursquare craftsmen-style home are often understated. The paneling in the doors being one of them. With so many layers of paint its getting hard to see the detail of the panels and I wanted to try an experiment to see if stripping the doors would be worth the time investment for a fresh surface to paint on. Get all the details on my stripping adventure in my Instagram highlights found in my profile.

Ikea Hack – The Channel Tufted Bed

Probably the most impactful project of them all was transforming our full sized Ikea Malm bed into a cozy/luxe, inviting spot for our guests. I wanted to dress up the simple bed, but I also wanted to extend length, and heighten the headboard. It needed to fit perfectly into the space created by the radiator (on the right) and the full length shelf above. I borrowed a few tricks from Brady Tolbert’s post about channel tufting his bed, and then added a few of my own. For functionality I custom built two sconces and had them recessed into the tufting. Below the sconces are two very petite floating tables that hang on angle brackets hidden within the tufting. Elements always have to repeat and here you can see I have incorporated the brass of the trellis into the fixtures, and the natural woodwork of the wall shelf in the floating side tables.

If you happen to be visiting this site because you are coming from the ORC, whazzzup? My name is Alison, and this blog is where I’ve been hanging out for the last 9 (!) years. Here is where I share my design inspiration, DIY adventures, and tips I learn from my feet-first approach to home improvement. As a bonus I’ve been able to meet a lot of cool people along the way. My fam and I live in a 108-year-old Minneapolis four-square craftsman home. You can check out a quick house-tour right here. Last summer, my husband I purchased an A-frame style cabin in need of a little TLC in the heart of Western Wisconsin (aka West Wisco). After six months of elbow grease, our cabin is on the verge of relative stardom – it recently hosted a photoshoot with Better Homes & Gardens, oh and the fam and I got to be in it too ;) You can check the feature in the upcoming December 2018 issue!

I’m super stoked to get started and can’t wait to share more. Make sure to check in on the other guest participants, and all of the super talented featured designers. I spent a chunk of yesterday checking out every single one of their reveals, here are some of my favs. Ashley’s Bedroom and Outdoor space, Catherine & Bryan’s Living & Dining Room, Joanna’s Outdoor Patio, Michelle’s Bedroom & Sitting Room, and Natasha’s Living Room, Entry and Stairs!

Oh yes! So good! Great trellis, and I love all your linens, too! Congrats! Enjoy your new space!

    • Scoops May 10, 2018

Thanks, Jordana! I can’t wait to relax, is it even possible?

  • Jewel May 10, 2018

  • Emy May 10, 2018

It turned out so lovely! Love that bed! And your trellis is so cool!

    • Scoops May 10, 2018

Thanks, Emy! I couldn’t be happier with how the bed turned out!

  • Natasha Habermann May 10, 2018

THIS bed is so freaking cool! Do you live in a hotel??? sure looks like it!!! Bravo!!

    • Scoops May 10, 2018

Thanks, lady! I made the joke that it was kind of like a hotel bed – because it’s all in one. I should’ve added some outlets on the nightstands and I would’ve nailed it.

  • It turned out great, Alison! I love that you fixed the windows and how you made everything fit in a small space. But mostly I’m just insanely impressed with that IKEA bed. Best IKEA hack ever!

    • Scoops May 10, 2018

Thanks you so much, Cathy! I agree, this was a pretty solid Ikea hack ;) PS I love fixing windows – it’s kind of like a treasure hunt.

  • erin May 10, 2018

YES! you should totally put the trellis in the kit shop. i would love to add that to my fence for clematis to climb!!

    • Scoops May 10, 2018

I didn’t even think about it outside, wouldn’t it be sooooo cool on the back of a house or fence. I might have to make another one! I’m gonna try and get it in the kit shop reeeeal soon – once I recover from this ORC ;)

  • Amanda May 10, 2018

    So, so, so good!

  • Allie May 10, 2018

I love the bed! SUCH a cool idea! And the shelf above it, so good!

    • Scoops May 10, 2018

Hey Allie! Thank you! I really like the shelf too, I originally was going to paint it white so it blended in, but I really like the natural wood – because I ALWAYS like natural wood. What was I thinking?

  • Jen @ Noting Grace May 10, 2018

Awesome reveal Alison!! I love the textures on those bed pillows!

  • Brittany Goldwyn May 10, 2018

Absolutely lovely! Looks like a room I’d want in my own home. I really love the long floating shelf. Great way to maximize space and of course a lovely home for the plants!

    • Scoops May 10, 2018

Hey Brittany, Thanks so much! I am so stoked to have this all put together, I might even have to be a guest in the guest bedroom one night soon.

  • jana May 10, 2018

well. i really love it all but those windows MAKE the room… or is it just me? this solidified that black window sashes are 100% the way i’m going when i restore mine. now i’m off to buy some sash cord…

    • Scoops May 10, 2018

Yes, go get that sash cord! I like the black too, It has me thinking that maybe more sashes need to be painted black!!

  • Mary May 10, 2018

I really like everything you’ve done here. And I appreciate how diy you (and The Gold Hive) are with your designs.
I’ve been thinking about doing a similar shelf in our master bedroom – is yours a solid 2x? Or is it a 1x with a front fascia/front lip? Also, is it on angled brackets? A french cleat? Or floating shelf brackets?

    • Scoops May 10, 2018

Thanks, Mary! I hope Ashley and I are good representations of women doing larger scale DIY. You’ve got it, I used 1x2s for the back and side braces, and a 1×8 for the top, and then the front is a 1×3 – this gives the illusion of a big chunky piece. The shelves are floating on a simple angle bracket hidden behind the tufting and attached on the bottom.

      • Mary May 10, 2018

Oh, I’m talking about the long, wall to wall shelf above the bed, not the floating tables. (I’m assuming your description is for the tables due you saying the bracket is hidden behind the tufting).

  • Sarah Gibson May 10, 2018

I’m loving all of your plants! It feels so bright and spacious- great job!! xo

    • Scoops May 10, 2018

Thanks, Sarah! The plants do help give it an airiness, don’t they?

  • Lisa May 10, 2018

Lovely! Can you share the source for the curtain rods? Looking for slimmer matte black ones like these :)

    • Scoops May 10, 2018

Hey Lisa! Of course, I was super surprised to find these at Ikea! I looked all over their site for a direct link but couldn’t find one. They have the rod pictured in a lot of the photos, but I can find the actual rod. Hope that helps!

  • JUSTYNN May 10, 2018

    Yes on the trellis!

  • Deborah May 10, 2018

I mean just stunning. And those windows and gooooorgous! I need those in my life.

    • Scoops May 11, 2018

Thank you so much! I’m glad the windows are such a hit!

  • Ellen May 10, 2018

    It looks fantastic!

  • AnnMarie May 10, 2018

*gasp of wonder* I love all of it! I can’t even pick a favorite part, because…well, that wouldn’t be fair to all the other parts. But man oh man, I do love that gorgeous, plush headboard! And the chunky wall-length shelf! And the brass trellis! And the plants! And the windows!

    I meant it when I said I couldn’t choose.

    • Scoops May 11, 2018

Ha!, Thank you! I can’t pick a favorite part either ;)

  • paige May 11, 2018

This is just soooo amazing! You did a fantastic job! Now, time to rest that back and chill at the cabin!

    • Scoops May 11, 2018

Oh yeah, you know my agenda.

  • Jessica Devlin May 11, 2018

I love me some black windows! And those sconces in the headboard (fans myself) The little details bring it all together, the door hook against the black door is so pretty. Great job

    • Scoops May 11, 2018

Thanks, Jessica! I’m really happy with the sconces too. This room only has two outlets and they are in really strange places, so it’s always been hard to have plugin lighting. I was able to run a cord under the bed and then these plugin from the back side. That hook is so pretty, it was an Ikea find is totally solid. I need to pick up a few additional ones the next time I visit the blue and yellow store.

  • KLP May 11, 2018

Love this makeover–very inspiring. I wish our pre-1900 house still had the original windows–alas they were swapped out for vinyl some time ago. If we ever replace them, I’ll definitely go black.

YES on the trellis! Great call.

    • Scoops May 11, 2018

Oh dang, that’s such a bummer about the windows. There are window companies making really nice wood windows, so maybe in the future. Thanks for the thumbs up on the trellis :)

  • Alice May 11, 2018

Great work! Can you tell me more about the art above the bed? Is it the organize fish? Didn’t see it on your earlier posts or in your ‘shop the room’ roundup. Thanks!

    • Scoops May 22, 2018

Hey There! I’m assuming you’re speaking of the art that was in the before photos? It was a large painting done by my art school friend, Matt Scharenbroich. You can see more of his work here.

  • Alison! What a calming, bright, and thoughtful room. 10×10′ is so tight for a bedroom but you made it work so well – I didn’t even realize it was a small space! I love your restored windows and black sashes – my windows need love but I’m nervous about attempting it myself. That tufted headboard with your sconces and shelves is so good and I can’t tell you how much I love a black radiator. Your brass work with the trellis is gorgeous and it’ll be so nice to watch your plant thrive and grow along it. AMAZING work, you totally nailed it and I am so in love with this room!

    • Scoops May 22, 2018

EMILY! Thanks for your nice comment :) It is a tiny space, there is just enough room to walk around the bed, but it needed to work! It honestly feels twice as big with the fresh paint, and new bed. I’m always amazed how a set of new curtains can really elevate a space too, wish I had done it sooner!

  • Kate Hollingsworth May 11, 2018

I love the wooden shelf above the bed – I love that it spans the entire wall and the plants add so much life to the room. xx

    • Scoops May 22, 2018

I am so happy with the wooden shelf too. Before, the radiator just stopped your eye from moving across the room, which caused it to feel just as small as it actually is. The shelf does help to make it feel more spacious, plus it’s v functional :)

  • Lyndsee May 12, 2018

This turned out so well! I would absolutely buy one of those trellises. So genius.

    • Scoops May 22, 2018

Thanks, Lyndsee! I love the trellis too, now I just want to put wall trellises everywhere.

  • Jess May 12, 2018

It’s so gorgeous. I made a headboard with his tutorial too. I love how you recessed the sconces and shelves into yours. Also the long floating shelf is genius. Congrats!

    • Scoops May 22, 2018

Hey Jess! Yes, I’ve seen your headboard show up around the internet. I love that you placed it between those two wardrobes, it looks so good and custom. What a great tutorial Brady provided the internet with. There have been so many awesome variations of it!

  • This looks fabulous! I love the way the black paint and hardware make the windows POP! Thanks for sharing your guest bedroom makeover with us. :)

    • Scoops May 22, 2018

Awh, Thanks Rachel! I love the windows so much too. I’m very tempted to repeat this with all the upstairs sashes.

  • Meghan May 13, 2018

You’ve done it again!! Amazing! Wow. I want a trellis. You need to get a patent for that shit. Way to go.

    • Scoops May 22, 2018

Haha! Yeah, maybe I will:) I’ll definitely have to add it to the kit shop.

  • Jessica | Petal + Ply May 13, 2018

I LOVE the trellis wall and headboard!!! The whole room came together so beautifully!

  • Dara May 13, 2018

I’ve been waiting to see how that headboard turned out ! I just love it and your trellis! Beautiful room!

    • Scoops May 22, 2018

Thanks, Dara! I’m stoked about the bed. There were a few question marks when it came to execution, and I am relieved that it all turned out like I had planned.

  • So many beautiful details in this space! Love LOVE the brass trellis! Fantastic job!

    • Scoops May 22, 2018

Thanks so much, Tash! The trellis is just what I had hoped it would be :)

  • Kim May 14, 2018

Your hard work really paid off, it’s such a perfectly balanced space that every detail feels like it works together perfectly. Really nice.

    • Scoops May 22, 2018

Thanks, Kim – what a nice comment :)

  • Caswin May 14, 2018

Nice! Would a tall person be able to sit up in the bed without hitting her head on the shelf? I’d love to see a picture of your guests hanging out in the bed. Oh, boy, that sounds really, really weird, doesn’t it?

    • Scoops May 22, 2018

I wouldn’t call it hitting your head, but if a tall person wanted to sit up straight in bed their head would def be resting on the shelf.

  • Jenny May 14, 2018

I LOVE this room – love, love love! That brass trellis you created is by far my favorite part of the room – I NEED one of those in my life. I also love that you restored your windows – they look gorgeous. Beautiful job!

    • Scoops May 22, 2018

Thanks, Jenny! That trellis will be making it’s way to the kit shop real soon, so hopefully I can help to share the love!

  • Susanne May 17, 2018

I just love the simplicity of this room!! What a wonderful space to relax in…Congratulations on a beautiful makeover!!

    • Scoops May 22, 2018

Hey, Susann! It can be so simple because the light in this room is soooo good. Thanks for the nice comment :)
