I began looking for replacement slipcovers around the new year. I did lots of research, and after ordering some samples, I decided that Comfort Works as the brand that had what I needed. A huge reason I choose Comofort Works instead of other slip cover manufacturers is because of the durability of the fabric used. In doing my research I found this youtube vid, and I was so impressed by how the fabric repels liquids. As soon as I got my fabric samples I started dumping coffee and cocktails all over them to see how they held up. I was so incredibly stoked to see how well they did. I was actually using the samples as a party trick, impressing well imbibed cabin guests with “magic”, showing them how well the samples repelled stains...

Twelve years ago on a cold November night I lay slumbering peacefully in my twin bed in my tiny college bedroom (Jeff may have been there too, but don’t tell my folks). I had decorated my room after seeing an episode of Trading Spaces wherein Doug painted a room a shade of blue that was nearly grey and hung glass icicles around the top of a four-poster bed. Side note – I tried to Google a picture of it to show you guys, but Trading Spaces was practically on TV before the internet even knew how to poop on the toilet. Get it? The internet was like slightly older than a baby. Anyway people didn’t put photos on the internet back then because it took up too many KB’s and whatever. Trading Spaces inspired me to take my first decorating baby steps. I basically painted my room blue, had a vintage table as a desk and hung some bookshelves from my wall because I had no space to put books anywhere else – there was definitely no icicles. Back to when I was sleeping. So, I was sleeping in my bed…and then I wasn’t, because all of the books and all of the boards and all of the brackets that I had expertly hung on my wall (without anchors, ha) came tumbling down on top of me (and Jeff) in the middle of the night. Who knew that I was supposed to use anchors? I mean who knew? I was like 19. 19 year olds don’t know that stuff. However, twelve years later and I think I finally figured it out. Booyahchaweagle! Here’s a before shot in case you didn’t remember what it used to look like just a few short months ago. This photo illustrates how bad that picture molding was and how much better it looks now with the strip of 1″ cove. More on that over here. Somebody, please tell me – why does it feel like my head is going to explode? Holy balls! Everything is so crazy busy right now. For instance, I’ve been working on writing this blog post for a week, and these shelves have been built for nearly three. I have been super excited to share with you the new bookshelf I built and installed in the corner of the bedroom, like I was just bursting with pride and wanted to show […]

Who doesn’t like an excuse to look at gratuitous photos of pretty nightstands? Good, glad I’m not alone. It goes without saying, but I’m gonna say it anyway. I wasn’t going to take the time to make our bedroom all pretty without doing something about the bed side tables. We were getting new nightstands. Of course this girls working within a budget, so the world is not my oyster. It is in fact more like some sort of mussel or clam. With my budget in mind my original plan was to purchase two of these Stockholm tables from Ikea, paint them white and add some pretty hardware. I needed something petit in size, capable of storage and low in cost. These Ikea tables would have run me a hair under $200 bones, and would have done the trick. Then a sale happened and I couldn’t resist the Penelope nighstand from West Elm. I was able to get these tables for the same price as the Ikea tables! Here is how I reasoned this into being. These side tables retail for $199 each for a total of $398. My buddies over at WE were having a 20% off sale a few weeks ago, which if you do your math is a savings of $40 per table. Now I’m down to a cost of $318 for two tables, I also had a West Elm “Design Dollars” from my bed purchase a few months ago, this save me an additional $100 bucks. Now these tables are down to $218, which was good enough for me to go ahead and pull the trigger on. However, West Elm charged me incorrectly and I called to straighten it out, in doing so they took care of the tax and shipping which put me well under $200 bucks. I would describe that as a win. I feel like I should be on an episode of Extreme Couponing or something. Also, I sold my old Heywood Wakefield side table for $80 bucks on Craigslist. Thank god for Craigslist. I love these nightstands because they are the perfect size, 18″ diameter, anything bigger would have overwhelmed the space. They have a drawer which is perfect for remotes and notebooks and stuff like that. I always need drawers in my life! I love the tapered legs, giving it a nod to that mid-century vibe without going all in, and the […]

Remember back when I was debating moving the bed a few weeks ago? I’m sure you guys are just on the edge of your seat waiting to see what we decided to do. Well, after living with it for a few weeks we decided to go ahead and move the bed to the wallpapered wall. You guys were right, I really love it this way. There were pros and cons for moving the bed, one of the biggest cons was where to put the tv. This was a big issue for us because we L O V E our tv. We’re addicted and we’re not afraid to shout it to the world. We watch a few shows almost every night before bed, so we just needed to have a tv. Our bedroom is long and narrow so putting the tv on the far wall opposite the bed would’ve been strange. The tv would’ve been so far away that I’m not sure we could’ve seen the picture clearly or heard the tv from that side of the room. There was also the option of hanging the tv on the wall next to the bed, this wasn’t ideal because we’d have to crane our necks to watch our very important shows. Plus it would be the first thing you saw when you entered the room and it would scream, “look at me I’m a big ugly dumb life sucking black box hanging on your wall”. There would’ve needed be some sort of cover contraption built for the tv so that it could be tucked away when it wasn’t being watched. Then there was the long shot option. This option involved some eye rolling from friends and family. With the bed in the new position we needed to have something at the foot of the bed because the room is so long and narrow. Having a piece of furniture in this space elongated the bed and connected it to the other end of the room, dubbed the ‘dressing area’. Whether it was a bench or small chest of drawers, something needed to rest at the end of the bed to have the room all make sense spatially. Get it? So why not take our old credenzay-buffet-style chest of drawers, paint it white, remove the top, chop off the legs, add a new better top on hinges, and hide our tv inside of it!
Don’t pay any attention to that dusty old radiator back there, I’ll take care of that later. Look instead at my new chair! After scouring craigslist for the last few weeks I finally found a Bertoia Diamond chair for the corner of our bedroom. I had my heart set on one for this space in the corner for-like-ever. You just have to imagine the chair sitting in this corner with new beautiful corner shelves and lots of books hanging out behind it. It will be the best. The only thing is, I kinda wish it was white. I’m considering giving it a spray paint job, but don’t know if I have the guts to pull it off. Would it be such a sin to do this to this 1953 chair? I dunno. There is also the option of paying a buttload of money to have it sandblasted and powder coated. Also sounds like a pain. What would you do? Share this...
Okay guys, so if you didn’t know this about me, I love surprises but I totally suck at keeping secrets. I thought I was going to be some sort of awesome blogger and build suspense around this whole wallpaper thing, but who am I kidding. I’m too excited about it to keep it a secret. So if you couldn’t tell by the image above, we decided to go with the Rifle Paper Copper Peonies wallpaper, yes it’s totally not like my usual steeze, but man, I can’t stop thinking about. Not gonna lie, I went back and forth, it was actually a really hard decision and took me and Waffledoppledingdangdo (aka Jeff, my husband) and I a lot of focused brain power to come to a decision. Eventually it started to seem more and more apparent that the rifle paper was the one, even though it’s totally unlike us to go this route. We are excited to see it up on the walls. Can’t thank you dudez enough for your feedback on wallpapers. It was all a lot of information to consider but def helped steer us (me) in the right direction. I’m still going to hold on to the Woods wallpaper though, maybe we’ll use it in the basement renovation going down early next year. Okay, can I stop for just a second? I’m going to take a minute to mention that it is only the 2nd week of the school year and the whole fam is already coming down with really dumb colds. My brain is about a million miles away from my actual skull space, so sorry if sound totally looney in this post. I blame the cold medicine. Alright, so now that I got that PSA out the way, lets talk about my other plan. Since our bedroom is divided into two sections, the bed/sleeping area and the dressing/changing area, I thought it would be best to utilize the space as efficiently as possible on the sleeping side. The space isn’t huge and having floor space to move around the bed is essential. Narrow floating furniture would really allow for storage without overpowering the space. After much brainstorming I started to consider adding a fauxdenza to the corner of the room similar to what I did last spring in the sunroom, (which is located directly off of our bedroom, FYI). Anyway, I like the idea of […]

A few weeks ago I picked up a couple of Bryant chairs from the Threshold collection at Target. Do they seem familiar to you at all? I kind of think they are a total knock off of the Loll Designs Lollygagger line, which is a little dissful of Target, especially since Loll is also a Minnesota local brand. I totally adore Loll furniture though and would love to have a set of my own someday, but for $440 a chair, that someday is a long ways away. When I saw the Bryant chair at Target I knew it would be the perfect chair to get me through now and someday – I couldn’t resist the $118 price tag (on sale) and I was able to look way past the brown facade. You might have noticed the new chairs in the photos that I took for the drill giveaway last week. By the way, the BLACK+DECKER drill giveaway is still open, so you should check the website and leave a comment on my post if you haven’t already. Anyways, I was totally not feeling the off-the-shelf brown that the Bryant chairs are stocked in, but I was definitely loving the style of them. I knew a painting project was in my future if I really wanted to achieve that true modern look. After debating between black and white, I took a deep breath an decided I would spray paint them white. I was a little nervous because I have not had the best luck with spray paint, its gets messy, and I get overly eager and often end up with drip marks. I was determined to spray paint the proper way and make these chairs really nice, giving thin even coats and allowing sufficient drying in between. I was a little hesitant to dive right in with any old spray paint as the adirondack chairs are made of all-weather polystyrene as opposed to wood. Lucky for me, my go to spray paint brand, Rust-oleum, has the Universal product which is designed for use on wood, plastic, metal, wood, concrete and even vinyl. I figured that polystyrene just had to be covered. I turned my garage into a spray booth, disassembling and spraying the chairs, and within a matter of days I had two perfectly sprayed white chairs. I love them. I’m not gonna lie, it took a lot of paint to […]

Hey Guys, I’m here to report back to you about the Trendig chair. Before I dive into that though, I want to let you guys know that it has been a stressful few days of being a blog writer. It all started Sunday with a new site design update – something that should have only taken a few hours turned into a huge mess due to things that were out of my control. The whole ordeal left me with a sick stomach and few sleepless nights. Luckily, my wordpress theme (thesis) has a great support staff and they have been working tirelessly getting things back in order – it’s still not 100% but should be there soon. If you notice any downtime, this is why. Hopefully, once things are stable I can actually roll out the new site design. So you may remember that a few weeks ago I purchased the Trendig chair from Ikea for the sunroom. I am totally in love with the design. It’s very reminiscent of the Hans Wegner wishbone chair, a chair I have always admired. I love the curved arms and the bentwood back of the Trendig chair, and adore the combination of black painted arms and light wood (it also looks great in red and white too), but was so disappointed and frustrated when I started assembling it. I would consider myself an Ikea aficionado. I can get in and out of that store in a matter of minutes, I know where everything is, and furniture assembly comes naturally. This chair was another story – it was by far the worst experience I have ever had assembling any flat packed item, ever. I can’t imagine putting together six chairs for a dining room table – it would be hell. The first big problem I encountered was with the seat. The instructions required you to attach four screws to a bracket illustrating that they should only be sunk into the frame a few screw turns – I think the idea is to allow flexibility for attaching the seat. The next step was to use four small screws to attach the bentwood seat to the bracket. The seat came with threaded female couplers for easy assembly, but it is anything but easy. It was nearly impossible to get all four screws attached to the seat. If the screws had been 1/16 of an inch longer […]

Hello buddies! I have been avoiding something for awhile now. It’s one of those things that I know will most likely be simple, it’s just the starting that’s hard. What can I say? Avoidance is easy. Here’s the deal, I want to recover the mid century six-cushioned sofa in our sunroom. The sunroom is located off the master bedroom upstairs, it’s the room that sold us on this house. It seemed like the perfect place for us to hide away from the kids and hang out at the end of the day. Unfortunately this room never became that for us. We furnished it quickly and inexpensively after we moved in, and since then not much has changed. About a year ago we threw an old green rug down on the floor to help insulate it during the colder days, since then it has become a dumping ground for stuff that doesn’t have a home. I’d really like to make this room into the room we always hoped it would be, not the room that seems like an afterthought. Also, the above photo was taken when I was trying to make it look good, it does not look like that now. As always, budget is a big factor for me, I want to update this and make it comfy on the cheap without spending a ton of cash. We have two pieces of furniture currently in the room. The orange upholstered vintage swivel chair has potential to be that fun bit of color in the space. I’d like to play off of it and add a blue graphic rug. We also have the six cushioned sofa which is the ideal proportion for the space, I don’t think I could get a better sized sofa if I tried. The sunroom is small (7′ x 11′) and a big sofa would overtake the room. I’d really like to replace the cushions and recover this sofa – I’m so nervous about it though. As it sits, it is covered in old curtains, underneath that is alternating blue and brown naugahyde cushions. Yah, it’s kind of a dog. When I mentioned doing this all the way back in July, a local reader, Laura of Lahlo Shelter – who also happens to be an upholsterer, offered me some good advice about where to find foam. I also bought this book and have watched a few youtube […]

We’ve been talking for awhile about the boys sharing a room once Gus grows out of his crib, (which should be coming to an end around the fall). There are lots of reasons for the boys to share a room, but the main one is because they want to. At least Finn wants to, we only suppose Gus does, because if he had it his way he would follow Finn around 24/7. I never had a sibling of the same gender, but I did have a brother, and we did share a bunk bed for a few years. I don’t know if I would say that it brought us closer, but I’d like to think that two boys sharing a room would create a bond for them as they grow up. This sharing a room thing doesn’t have to be for forever either. We’ll save Gus’ old room using it as a guest room in the interim, and it will be ready for him to move back into if the kids decide to split. Finn’s room is pretty large and when it was built a hundred years it was definitely set up for kids to share. The entry door is right in the middle of the room. The windows are also smack dab in the middle. On either side of the door there are symmetrical light fixtures (to sit above twin beds) and identical closets, both housing built in toy boxes. The room was meant for kids to share! Finn has wanted a bunk bed for a long time. He sleeps on a cool old bunk bed every time we visit the cabin, and he thinks it’s the greatest thing ever, cause it is when you are 5! Even though the room is meant to have two twin beds on either side, we’re planning on having the bunk bed make its home on one side of the room, leaving the other side for toys and playing. And we have a back up plan, just in case they become teenagers and decide they don’t want to have a bunk bed anymore we’d like them to be able to separate the bunk beds and create spaces on either side of the room. I also don’t expect them to share a room forever either, unless they want to, but I think having two beds in that room would be perfect for sleepovers down […]

Old, New Sofa Guys, I’ve only been talking about it for like 9 months, but our new living room sofa is being delivered tomorrow!!! I’m so excited, I can barely stand it. And although I’m so excited about the new living room furniture, I’m a little sad about replacing the porch sofa with the old living room sofa, and saying goodbye to the current wicker porch couch. My emotions have gotten the best of me and I now have a sofa dilemma on my hands; does the old living room sofa make it’s home on the new porch, or do I stick with the good ol’ funny porch sofa? We’ve been “surviving” in the porch with a hand-me-down white wicker sofa. The blue cushioned wicker sofa with white polka dots came to live with us in 2008 after living the first 7 years of it’s life on my parents back porch. At first our relationship was strictly utilitarian; we needed a place to sit while hanging on the porch. Then, somehow I began to love that weird misshapen sofa. Spending pregnant afternoons with Finn, taking spring naps in the sun, and staying up way too late with good buddies all happened on that porch couch. Yes, the cushions are attached to the sofa with duct tape and industrial strength velcro so they don’t slide around, yes, when you sit there long enough the metal brace supporting the wicker starts to dig into your butt and leaves you temporarily paralyzed from the waist down, and yes, the cushions are speckled with kids stains, and are more faded then Keith Richards. So, whats a a girl do when she’s fallen in love with the memories of an old blue sofa? Old, Old Sofa I guess I’m looking for reassurance and a reality check, the “New Old Sofa” if obviously better and more comfortable than the “Old, Old Sofa”, right? It’s time to say goodbye, isn’t it? What would you do? I can’t be the only one that has an emotional relationship with a piece of furniture, can I? Share this...
Guys! I’m moving full steam ahead with the spring even if the weather isn’t. That being said, I got a new table for the porch last night, and I played cribbage on it, drank a beer, and listened to the Twins game while wearing my coat. It felt good! I am so excited about this table, let me tell you why. You know I love my porch, it is hands down our favorite place in the house. I never thought I would love 400 square feet of space only usable for part of the year so GD much, but I do. For as much as I love gushing over furniture and decor, I’ve never tried to put a look together in the porch. It’s such a hodge podge of hand me downs. The sofa is white wicker with royal blue cushions, the coffee table is from our college days and I’ve added our modern Burke (I think) tulip arm chairs for extra seating. The only thing I’ve ever really given a lot of thought to is adding a table for the corner of our porch. There are two sections of the porch separated by the front door and vestibule. We always hang out on the wicker sofa side (soon to be the old living room sofa side). There is a whole other side of the porch that we leave unused, a total waste of valuable porch square footage. Jeff and I have recently realized that we want the porch to be our own mini cabin in the city, we’ve even dubbed it “urban cabin”. We want it to encompass the chill vibes of being at a northern Minnesota cabin. We’ve already started collecting vintage cabin artwork, as well as old quilts and pillows to have ready for urban cabin sofa naps (or snuggling under when the spring is 30º cooler than it should be). Another thing we’ve recently added to maximize urban cabin vibes; an apple airport express modem that we can run through the stereo to play all our favorite jams while hanging on the porch. We can even stream our favorite urban-cabin-classis-rock radio station, KQRS, for that true up-north feel. So, I’ve been trucking around a set of four Burke tulip chairs for a few years, I really, really like them. Even though they are knock off Saarinen style chairs, they still feel very iconic. I’ve wanted to […]

The spring clean up continues over here at Casa La Allen!! This time I’ve targeted the weird area that sits between the entry way/desk zone and the kitchen. It’s also the access point to the basement stairs. It’s a weird space that we’ve never tried to do anything with. It’s exactly 31 3/8″ wide and 12″ deep. There has been four hooks installed here since we moved in and we’ve used it as a place to hang coats. This might sound like a essential space to have in a home with no coat closet, but now that we’ve got the mud room organized and functioning we don’t need other places to hang coats. The coats, hoodies, and umbrellas we normally hang here don’t get used for months. This space has become the place you hang stuff when you’re feeling to lazy to put it away in a 2nd floor closet. So losing that coat hanging area wasn’t really essential to the function of the home or entryway. Plus I’ve got plans to add a new guest-only coat hanging place in the actual entry area. So all that being said, I took a trip to Ikea this weekend and came home with this shoe cabinet, something way more useable and important to the function of our family. YAY SHOE STORAGE! We lucked out in a major way because Ikea designed this Ställ shoe cabinet specifically for our space (not). It does however fit perfectly into this weird space in our home. I mean, look at it! It’s sits flush inside the space, not a half inch to spare. I shimmed it a little only because the floors are a bit uneven here, but that’s it. You might notice from the link that it’s supposed to be installed with legs, but I opted not to do that. I didn’t want all sorts of dirt and toys gettings stuck under there, which would happen in about 1 minute, you know it would. Not only does it fit like a glove, there is an outlet in the baseboard behind the cabinet, so we can actually add a lamp and make the shoe hideaway look like a piece of furniture, instead of just an inexpensive piece of big box storage. We are a family who is not good at putting our shoes away. This piece can hold 18 pairs of shoes, that’s a lot! It […]

I never knew that ‘Bar Keepers Friend‘ was a miracle when it comes to shinin’ and spiffin’ up old furniture. That was until I read a cool post about making your brass new and shiny looking over on Manhattan Nest. That blog has taught me a thing or two in my day, this was a good lesson. First of all, I used to never care for brass or anything gold and shiny. Probably because I associated with all the gaudy 90’s decor of my childhood. I guess I got over it because these days I’m liking it, quite a bit actually. It’s showing up all over the house, and all over me. I’ve been rocking brassy earring, bracelets and zippers like nobody’s business. I’m sold on this stuff. When we moved in 3 years ago, I picked up this vintage footstool and promptly placed it in our upstairs porch, never to be thought of again. I recently rearranged the living room furniture and brought down the footstool. Now it’s all up in my day-to-day space, and I’ve been really enjoying having it around. It makes lounging in the living room an actual thing, that happens, and satiates my hunger for a sectional sofa. Back to the story about the brass though, I never realized that the footstool had little golden caps on the end of its slender legs until it made the move downstairs. How could I not notice brass? Well it was tarnished and very dirty, and not in a pretty patina-y way. I decided that with my new found ‘Bar Keepers Friend‘ knowledge that had been dropped on me, that I’d give those caps a little love with a quick cleaning. In case you’ve never seen Bar Keepers Friend, this is what it looks like. It’s available at almost any hardware store. I picked it up at the grocery store last time I was out, so it shouldn’t be hard for you to come by. Also, notice how dirty those dawgs are? 5 minutes later: Sparkle, Shine, Love. Look, you can actually tell it’s brassy, and it looks so good with my little brass flower pot (and my earrings). What can I shine up next? Share this...
Hey Guys, I’m still obsessing over the final plans for the living room. If you’ve been reading along you know that I’ve been compiling style boards for potential sofa, rug, and chair candidates as we’re in the market for some new living room pieces. I’ve realized that there are like a million combinations of furniture pieces that could work together for our living room. This of course is driving me insane, and for my own mind-processing-powers, I decided to lay it all out there in one nice animated gif. It’s a weird way to solve a problem, I know. BUT, doing this I discovered that my favorite chair, sofa and rug combination made themselves quickly apparent. So it worked! I still haven’t narrowed it down to “I know exactly what I want” but I have a really good idea of what I am looking for. For example, I realized that I really like that Stockholm rug, and it works as an inexpensive stop-gap option from now until when the kids are older. When that day comes along we might be able to get a way with a light colored rug like the Souk (let’s hope). I totally love the lighter colored furniture, like LOVE-LOVE it, and I’m going to try my hardest to find a fabric that is stain resistant. Maybe we won’t be getting the white chair, but the light gray sofa would be perfect. We’ll see if there is a fabric that will fit the bill when we start testing out furniture in the coming weekend R&B trips. Of course, on the bottom right of my cool gif above you can see the static fixtures to the room; the teal paint color, a plant or two, my new Martini Side Table from West Elm, the tiny but cool coral lamp I got on Etsy, and an assortment of black and white and colored pillows (these are all from the Fine Little Day Shop). I think my ultimate favorite combo from above is the gray Reese Sofa, white Andre Chair, and Souk Rug, but obviously that is impractical with the kids. Considering something like the Gray Reese Sofa, Blue Jasper Chair and Stockholm Rug would be a good alternative. I also really like that Andre Sofa with the buttons on the back. What’s your favorite combo? I’ve laid it all out below, because I am crazy and sometimes it’s […]

We’ve been saving for a few months now and it’s getting closer and closer to shopping time for some new living room furniture!!! In case you couldn’t tell by the excessive exclamation marks, I can’t wait! If you remember from previous posts, our living room sofa and arm chair have seen better days. Now that kids are getting a little older we figure we can trust them not to puke or pee on our future new couch… we hope. I’ve posted before about dream sofas and chairs and now you get to hear about rug candidates too. Our living room has recently been painted and now has dark teal walls set against dark woodwork. I knew that getting into the dark wall game meant adding more contrast to the room. Using colors like black and white as accents throughout the space and painting picture frames white give the space the contrast it needs. All of our pillows and throws are black, white, bold and graphic. Our current rug (Jorun from Ikea) is also, black, white and graphic, although it looks awesome in photographs it hasn’t held up too well. The furniture tends to stretch the rug out and it drives me crazy when the edges don’t run parallel to the wood flooring. I am obsessed with straightening it out and I pick at it all day long. I love our graphic chevronesque black and white rug and it’s replacement needs to be just as awesome while having the ability to hold its shape for this highly used area. 1 Souk Rug from West Elm I love, love, L O V E this rug! I’ve admired it for a year now and I just can’t get over it. It’s just so pretty and perfect. This would be my living room rug in a second if it wasn’t for those kids who have a crazy ability to stain almost anything in our house. The pristine white would really lighten the space and everything would be perfect. It’s probably not meant to be, but I do love it so. 2 Shoowa Rug from Room and Board This is an expensive one, but a good one. I really like the indigo blue against the creamy white and I could see it looking fantastic in a space that had neutral walls but needed more color. I had to include it in this post because it’s […]

Our current arm chair is in even worse shape then the sofa. It’s saggy, stained and sorry-ass-lookin’. The chair, like our sofa, also came from Room and Board, but unlike the sofa, was purchased in the default-off-the-rack fabric and it hasn’t held up well. Not only is it a light khaki color, but it’s a fabric that just doesn’t clean up! I’ve tried fabric cleaners, steam vacuums, and magic tricks, but the stains just spread. It’s a mess, and a total embarrassment. I cover the seat with a blanket. SERIOUSLY SO GROSS. So duh, it’s been decided, we should probably get a new chair too. I would prefer to get something with low or narrow arms, or heck, just go straight-up armless. The chair will make it’s home in the corner of the living room and I want it to be the type of piece that doesn’t take up a lot of room visually but is still comfortable to lounge in and watch TV, because we LOVE TV. Here are a few of my fav options: 1 Anthropologie Rhys Chair in Caribbean Blue Leather 2 Crate and Barrel Petrie Leather Chair 3 Eames Upholstered LCM Plywood Lounge Chair from Design Within Reach 4 West Elm Everett Upholstered Chair 5 Bertoia Diamond Lounge Chair from Design Within Reach 6 Crate and Barrel Donegal Chair Some of these chairs are insanely out of our budget but I had to post them. Even though they are way expensive they are still mighty fine looking. Some of these chairs are NOT super comfy for lounging like the Eames chair, but I was thinking that it might be a good fit if we do decide to go for the chaise sectional sofa. If we choose to go sectional stylez we would need something that was smaller scale seating for the corner of the room to balance out the size of the sofa. I love the Anthropologie chair but I don’t think it would fit very well with what I’ve got going on. I think it’s totally amazing though, so I had to include it in this post. I’m all about the shape of the crate and barrel chair but wish it had more fabric options, don’t know if I’m ready […]

I’ve had sofas on the brain for awhile now. After witnessing my almost 9 year old living room sofa be drowned in baby puke, used as a trampoline by 3 & 4 year olds and partied on by grown ups (a lot), it’s showing it’s age and it’s war wounds. It’s time my good old sofa, it’s time. We purchased our sofa (Room and Board Mercer) back in 2004, it was our first big investment in furniture, and an investment I’m glad we made. We had it covered in a custom fabric that has been so forgiving and chose a sofa with simple lines that grew (up) with us as our tastes changed. Another decision I’m glad we made was to get a sofa with the least amount of loose cushions possible. It’s been great with the kids, I don’t have to worry about fluffing and repositioning cushions all the time, and would like to repeat that good decision again. I’ve doubted a lot of my interior design choices over the years, but I have never questioned this sofa, it has been the best. The time has come for this sofa to be put out to pasture. Super sad, I know, but necessary. The fabric is sagging and becoming frayed and the stains are mocking me. We won’t be purchasing until later this winter but I’ve got my eyes peeled already. I’ve compiled a list of the top contenders. I’m on the fence as to whether or not we’ll risk it and go light with a quality fabric or stay in the gray and charcoal tones. I’m looking for the same good old simple modern lines but with a new fresh look. 1 West Elm Dunham Sofa 2 Crate and Barrel Petrie Sofa 3 Room and Board Reese Sofa 4 CB2 Club Atomic Sofa My fav right now is the the Room and Board Reese sofa, and it also comes as a petite sectional with a chaise, something to consider. What do you think? Any recommendations on dark vs light, can it be done if you were to use a quality clean-up-able fabric? Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

I thought someone was supposed to be stopping me from buying more chairs? Come on guys. I need you. This purchase actually makes sense. Lemme ‘splain something to you. We found our dining room table on craigslist back in 2009. The table is a a Drexel Projection table dated 1959. We love it, like love, LOVE it. When we bought it we were looking for a interim dining room table. Something to have until we got a real grown up dining room table years down the road, but that’s not happening, this table is too great. With the 3 leaves in, our table seats 10 (we only have 6 chairs so you do the math). I’ve been searching on craigslist and ebay for the last two years looking for another set of chairs. These things don’t exist. During two years of searching I’ve NEVER seen them come up on craigslist. I have seen them occasionally on ebay but they are always way too expensive and usually for local pick up only… in Florida. Then, I saw this posting for a dining set, but do you see what I see, in the background there? My chairs, eureka baby! I quickly sent off an email trying not to sound insane asking if I could make an offer on the Drexel chairs. Bing bang boom, a little negotiating and I am now the proud owner of 5 new Projection chairs! It’s way more than I need, but that’s the way the negotiating cookie crumbled. I was hoping I’d find more chairs so I bought extra fabric when I recovered the chairs a bajillion years ago. Glad I don’t have to worry too much about getting them all to match. Now I just have to come up with a reasonable storage solution for these when I’m not having a sit down dinner for 10. Oh god, I’m crazy, right? Share this...
