Blue Christmas

December 17, 2012

I’ve been trying to figure out how I was going to decorate for Christmas this year, I love a classic green, red and white Christmas, it’s usually my default holiday color scheme. I have this weird aversion to all other christmas color combos, anything else so often seems too serious, fancy and traditional for me. Traditional? What? I know, I know, red and green are the most traditional Christmas colors, so what the heck am I talking about? For me, there is something more light hearted and casual about your classic red & green Christmas decor. Plus, I’m a total sucker for a vintage Christmas and those are its signature colors. I often think that a white or silver color scheme (for example) can sometimes come off as highbrow and stuffy and does not suggest fun and whimsy, part of the key elements to a cool Christmas celebraish. I’m not trying to say that using more modern christmas colors makes you a rich square, it just reminds me of the suburbs from when I was a kid, where everyone used white twinkle lights, always. You get me, guys? It’s me, not you. All that crazy rant being said, I just [...]

Yeah, You Probably Need a Holiday Bar Cart

November 29, 2012

Cool, I am excited! It’s holiday time, and that means party time! In anticipation of all the impending imbibing I will be taking part in the coming weeks, I took it upon myself to put together a nice little bar cart (table). If you recognized that bar table as the side table from the living room you win! This poor table is currently homeless because we have a huge Christmas tree taking its place next to the couch. What does a girl do with a side table just roaming around her house?, well I will tell you what… She makes an awesome bar out of it, duh. I am a hoarder of glassware, just ask my dining room buffet. It’s brimming with the stuff. So, it was easy for me to go through and find my most favorite tumblers and champagne coupes to put on display. Guess what? I also hoard booze, and it was even easier to open up the liquor cabinet and find the prettiest bottles to put on my circular white tray. Booze and glassware just happen to be the two key ingredients to making a cocktail, and to making a bar, so yeah, this is all [...]

It’s Picture Hanging Time!

November 2, 2012

Well all this reupholstering of dining room chairs has me in desperate need of getting my dining room a smidge bit more put together. This room has been driving me crazy since we moved in. It’s the paneling, it’s nice, but it’s dark and it gets in the way of any sort of wall hanging options that a normal person in a normal dining room would have. I’m over it. Part of my solution to this problem has been to incorporate as many white accents and objects in the room to help lighten it up and take away from the glaringly dark woodwork that covers the walls. Thank god Ikea loves selling me white frames, white vases, and white candlestick holders. I went to town covering the walls with white Ribba frames. I decided to include the matte in each frame (as opposed to going full frame with my artwork) to ensure the maximum exposure of white. I like the new white frame version much better than what I had going on before. After we moved in the thrifty girl inside of me decided to try a mismatched yet oh-so-put-together look and it just wasn’t working. Good effort on my [...]

Coral & Blue & Grey

I had taken a few photos around the house this weekend thinking I might try and do a post called “Inspired by the Royal Tenenbaum’s” or something weird like that, but when I went back to look at them this afternoon I realized that they weren’t really that Tenenbaumesque (which made me sad because I like to think my house aspires to be the blue smaller version of that house.) Instead I realized how similar the color themes were from room to room. Two of the photos were from the dining room, and two were from the new updated music room. This bright poppy coral color is something that’s showing up more and more around my house and is totally unintentional. I guess I’m just secretly drawn to the contrast between the muted greys and the bright red-orange, but seriously, why wouldn’t I be? Seeing it like this makes it look kinda awesome. Anybody else have a secret color that keeps showing up in your space? Related posts:Bathroom Dreamin’How I Conquered Wood TrimThinking About : My Living RoomMy New Nelson Bubble Lamp

Dining Room Buffet Makeover, 100% Free!

I’ve been meaning to organize the built-in buffet cabinet in our dining room for some time, it’s been set up the same way ever since we moved in, straight from the moving boxes and into the buffet. It’s seems like I should’ve done this a long time ago since it’s such a prominent piece in our main living space, but I never gave it too much thought, and I didn’t really have any great ideas for what I should do with it anyways. As a reminder, here is what it looked like before; unorganized, overflow storage. I was inspired to make a change after running into these lovely placemat’s at our local garden store the other day. I usually can resist the urge to buy items spontaneously but not with these babies, I was helpless against their power. With my spring color fix satiated I set the table to see how the placemat’s, my dinnerware, and glassware all looked together. The table looked great but the buffet did not, so I set Finn up in front of his latest pixar obsession, emptied out the cabinet, ran to my studio and grabbed some left over remanents of the Orla Kiely wallpaer [...]
