Poms! Hey e’rebody! I don’t know about you but I have a TON of wonderful people in my life who have July birthdays. If you didn’t know, July is a super trendy month to have a birthday ;) I was having trouble wrapping some gifts earlier this week for Finn’s 4th birthday. Bows were in short supply so I decided to whip up some yarn poms and use them in place of bows. I’m loving the way they turned out. I’ve been totally crushing on the poms my friend Crystal makes for ALL Knitwear hats. Her poms are super cute, so cute that they have infiltrated my brain. I luvre them. So, when I was trying to wrap presents on the fly with kraft paper (aka brown paper bags) I went straight for the yarn bag to try and spiff it up a bit and ended up with these cute pom bows. In case you don’t know how to make a pom, I thought I’d share a quick tutorial with you. Now you can liven up your July bday gifts too.   Trace and cut out two donuts I mashed together a few different tutorials but took the most [...]

Sunburst Afghan Remix

May 17, 2012

So, I couldn’t resist making Beak & Cam’s baby an afghan, just like the sunburst blanket I made for Elsa when she was borned. Believe me, I tried to resist, I knew it was going to take a lot of time and I probably should’ve started back in the cold days of winter. It’s totally my duty to bestow blankets on all the cool babies of the world. I couldn’t let Cam’s baby girl not have some sunburst lovin’ too, so here we go! You probably wouldn’t have guessed it but my first post ever on the blog was about the granny square afghan I made for Elsa, and to this day it is the most popular post on the blog, crazy huh? I guess I got some good SEO vibes on that one. Anyway, since I always get tons of questions on it, and since I can’t remember all the details, I thought I’d get more into for this version of the Granny square. For all you crochet nerds out there. My pattern is 90% based off the one seen here by priscillascrochet.net but in the fourth round I double crochet in each crochet from the 3rd round. In [...]

A Sick Snowy Weekend

November 16, 2010

The Allen fam was confined to our house this weekend. We all came down with the same nasty cold and I was as sick as I had been in a long time. Luckily the weather didn’t make us feel like venturing out too far, and we got to snuggle in and be cozy. I was able to finish a bunch of projects that I’ve been wanting to get done for awhile from the comfort of my couch. I have been scouring craigslist for a mid century style desk for my entryway for over 6 months. Let me just say i’s brutal out there, if you don’t respond within one hour you don’t have a chance, secondly people will steal a desk from you. I had one guy holding a desk for me until I got off work and the next thing I knew I was getting a call saying “oops he sold it.” So I finally found this solid-walnut gem. I enquired about the post from my couch, and had it delivered to my house (via a semi-drunk old guy). Long story short: I love having a desk in this space. It is really an awkward space and making it [...]

What better way to celebrate mom’s birthday than a delicious brunch. I think we can all agree the breakfast is the best meal you could ever eat so I did it up big for mom’s bday. Here’s the stats:Homemade Coffee CakeCarmel Rolls from scratchEgg BakeFruitDelicious Bacon from Everett’sAnd Scoops Famous Potatoes Have you ever made coffee cake from scratch? This was my first, and I realize that there is no other way to have a coffee cake unless you bake it yourself. So GOOD! I followed this recipe on epicurious and ended up with the most delicious coffee cake ever. My son now thinks he should have “Cake” for breakfast every day of the week. These things looked pretty awesome but only turned out OKAY. Not enough carmel!!!, I mean what’s the point? Seriously? My mom is one of the lucky ones who get’s to enjoy peony’s at every birthday. My new yard came equiped with one large peony bush that only wanted to make one small flower. These beauties came straight from the grocery store… Insert sad face here. And as promised, a fancy knit dishcloth. I followed this pattern from this very thorough and indepth dish-cloth-pattern site. So [...]

OMG I did it, I did it. I got so bored I finally went and found a new project. I am officially back on the knitting wagon. After a few months of fixing up our house and starting new gardens I couldn’t fight the urge to make something. I just found an awesome dishcloth pattern (as far as dishcloth patterns go) and bought some yarn. I am in full on dishcloth mode, yep that’s right, so you better watch out. Everyone better be expecting to get at least one dishcloth. This is for serious. Maybe next I’ll make you potholders… you never know. Here is an example of the goodsphoto from tehrimon on flickr Anyone want to join me? Here is a link to the pattern Related posts:Sunburst Afghan RemixTutorial : Present Poms
