Step one to updating my outdated bathroom was cleaning the gross floor tile. I actually thought that brown was the color the grout was supposed to be. Then I wised up and realized that maybe the grout was just really, seriously dirty (duh scoops). I did a little pre-hardware-store-visit internet research and was surprised to see that there were products that claimed to restore your grout to it’s original white colors. I didn’t believe it, but decided it was worth a shot.
I picked up this bottle of Tile Guard coating for a little less that six bucks which claimed to “Make grout look new again”. I didn’t believe it but for 6 dollars who cares. It was worth a try. I don’t know how this stuff works, I’m not sure if it actually bleaches the grout or if it just covers it with white stain, but the important thing is that my dirty brown grout is now white.
The application process was easy too, it took less than 20 minutes for me to apply it to the floor, I waited 4 hours wiped it off with a damp sponge and voila! I was thrilled that my floors looked so clean. I am now constantly stopping to admire my handywork. It looks a bazillion times better now!
Dang, that’s crazy. I might have to pick some up. Do you know if it works on grey grout? Our bathroom floor grout is a light gray color to match the tile and I don’t want to turn it bright white.
You could always do a tester area behind the toilet to see. I think it could work, this stuff is amazing.
I always thought our grout was dark too. Maybe it’s really white, I can’t wait to find out!

I wish I had found this stuff before my husband and I spent about $30 on those stupid grout pens (which basically just paint your grout white). Not to mention the 6-or-so hours he spent tracing the grout around the hundreds, if not thousands, of hexagonal penny tiles in our bathroom. Do you have to apply this product along the grout lines only or can you just mop the floor with it?

Sorry for the delay in response. Yes it works similar to a grout pen but you can draw outside of the lines and then wipe off later. It was really easy. I can’t imagine tracing tiny hexagons, ahhh!
