Deuce Cities Henhouse

Canning Stash

Yayer! Excited to finally show off my canning stash. I’m out of jars so I’m throwing in the towel and calling this season done.

This was my first time ever canning, and I really enjoyed it. It didn’t hurt that we were pulling veggies out of the garden and had our CSA boxes coming ever other week. We were on veggie overload especially in the tomato and cucumber department. I’ve spent quite a few afternoon nap seshes steaming up the house and preparing new recipes.

I went hog wild in the pickling department because I love eating anything with vinegar and salt and since it was my first time canning I wanted to make sure food was preserved properly. The pickling puts my mind at ease. Not only that, being a born and bread midwestern girl my favorite fall meal is crackers, cheese and salami with a cold beer. The perfect accompaniment to this fav meal of course is anything pickled. So here’s the run down of what I tried this year.

▼ Bloody Mary Mix
▼ Spicy Habanero Pickles
▼ Garlic Dill Pickles
▼ Spicy Beans
▼ Dill Green Beans
▼ Spicy Marinara
▼ Not Spicy Marinara (for the kiddos)
▼ Pickled Cherry Tomatoes
▼ Spicy Cauliflower and Carrots
▼ Sauerkraut
▼ Pickled Beets
▼ Whole Tomtaoes
▼ Jalapeños

So who else tried canning this year? What was the favorite thing you canned? Super curious over here so please share!

Update: I started a pinterest board with some of the recipes I used incase you’re interested in trying.

I did it for the first time this year too. After 2 rounds of pickles I moved to making jam. I’m sticking with jamming.

Yay! I gotta try out jams sometime. I love a lot of food but me and fruit have never been friends. I’m sure the kids would totally love homemade jam.

Do it! Kiddos love it. Start easy with the recipe in the box of sure jell. I did strawberry, blackberry, blueberry and raspberry all mixed together. Yum. Tip, mash the berries in small portions it’s much easier. :). Have fun!

Yum! Those look so good! I am terrified to can anything…I am pretty sure I would mess it up and kill myself with some crazy bacteria or something! Completely unrelated to canning…I was hoping for your opinion on some Twin Cities neighborhoods. My husband and I will most likely be relocating to the TC soon and buying our first house! We both went to college in Saint Paul, so I am pretty familiar with those neighborhoods. Minneapolis, however, is a different story. Any neighborhoods that you love or would recommend for a young couple looking to start a family sooner rather than later? I have heard good things about Northeast Minneapolis, but don’t think I have ever been there in person… mkay, Imma stop rambling now!

Welcome back to the Twin Cities! I’ve lived in both Minneapolis and Saint Paul and although I appreciate both I prefer Minneapolis. All my friends live in Minneapolis so I’m a little biased. We live in Kingfield and absolutely love it. It’s nice because it’s right near the lakes and uptown, but not too close to the lakes to be upper crust, and not too close to uptown to hear late-night bar closing traffic. It’s also overflowing with young families and kids. Before living here we lived in South Minneapolis near 38th and Cedar. We loved it there too, it has a very similar vibe to Kingfield in that there are lots of families and outdoor activities. In South Mpls you’d be super close to Minnehaha falls and Lake Nokomis.

      Good luck and welcome back!

Also, NE is a great place my brother lives there. It’s like the new uptown. I don’t know a ton about where the prime spots are but it’s good over there. Lots of delicious restaurants and fun bars.

Love the photo with your jars on the kitchen table- who are you, June Cleaver? Love it :)

Almost ;) Mostly, I just need to do something around the house in order to not go insane.
