It's hard to explain but the little black part of the actual light socket was only half fastened (probably to save time at the factory). This black washer is actually what holds the light to the bentwood shade. Maybe I'm just very silly, but when my bentwood shade fell and cracked I was very sad. Thank goodness all it took to repair the cracked bentwood were two staples!
Either way, I made it, I love it, I'm keeping them forever!

Hey Mara! Thanks for adding the tips, I'm sure that will help someone else. Just to clarify, when you say "make sure you screw the light fixture in all the way to the top", do you mean screwing the light fixture to the wall? I didn't experience either of these problems, if feel bad that you did, and I hope your sconces were salvageable. Thanks!

Awesome! Yeah, I think they had two versions available, one that came with a CFL bulb for $33 or no bulb for $29. It's kinda weird that they did that. I really like the lamp both ways (table or sconce), if I had room for tables I would've kept them as is.

Oh man, that stinks. I guess I take for granted how lucky us Minnesotans are to come from the land of Target. They've really upped their home-decor game in the last 6 months.

True story: I saw you were going to hack these in your porch planning post and I thought I would do the same. After all, 60$ for a pair of sconces were pretty good. I told my husband about the idea but without a picture he wasn't convinced. In fact he advocated to keep them as table lamps (what if I screwed up!). So before I hacked them I showed him how great yours looked and he flipped! He said they look awesome and he can't wait to see them in the guest room. Fastward: I finally did it and they look awesome! What a super idea!! I only wish you had noted to hold the heavy base while cutting otherwise you get some chipped edges. Also make sure you screw the light fixture in all the way to the top because mine fell off and I cracked the wood! Easy to fix with some staples.
Anyway, awesome diy. Awesome idea. Love the blog. You rock dawg!

Great project! I went online and bought two (they were $33, but this way I don't have to drive to Minnetonka, and I'm assured of getting 2). Might not chop the bottom off, it depends on how my new guest room shakes out...but glad to see that they make delightful sconces if I go that route! Thanks!!
