Aaron and I have been picking away at finishing our basement over the past year. We are slowly but surely starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel and I am now able to start putting the finishing touches on a few things. For the past 3 years the stairwell to the basement has been the hugest eyesore to me. I have two words for you when describing it; splatter paint. This is not boss. After a few painful years of starring at a purple and skin colored splatter paint job I decided things needed some serious freshening up. Inspired by a friend who recently painted her kitchen wall with a grey and white chevron pattern, I decided to have a go at my own subtle version of a chevron wall and started planning in a major way. Because I wanted to figure out the scale of my chevron in comparison to the size of the wall, I grabbed a measuring tape and my computer and got to mapping this thing out. I chose to map this all out using Adobe Illustrator, but you could do the same thing on a piece of graph paper. To make this all fit on one page, my ratio was 1 inch = 5 inches. This particular pattern measures 10 inches from ‘valley’ to ‘peak’ and the stripes are each 5 inches wide. Once you have this all worked out you’ll need to transfer your map to the wall. I grabbed my laser level and my ruler and started marking out a grid on my wall. I would not recommend drawing a literal grid on your wall. You’ll have a lot of erasing to do if you go that route and that may not make for the cleanest looking wall when you are all done. I found it easiest to measure where each ‘peak’ and each ‘valley’ would sit on my laser line and marked it with a little cross. Once all the little crosses were in place I started connecting them with painters tape. As I would finish each point I would take a ruler and a razor blade and cut the tape into a nice point. Make sure you have plenty of sharp blades to cut nice crisp points. Now that you have your tape up you will want to start painting. Don’t. First, grab your eraser and get […]

I’ve taken the last week or so to put some finishing touches on Elsa’s bedroom. At the time of my last post I had yet to paint the edges of the doors or finish painting the radiator. I thought I’d take a quick minute to share the results! Do you know how toward the end of a painting project you are just SO over painting and the looming clean up is just kinda hanging over you all ominous and heavy like? Then, just about when you are ready to call it, you look in your paint can and it seems that there just MIGHT be enough paint to finish up that one thing that you thought you might have to save for “round 2” so you go for it but then it turns out that you are one radiator section short on paint? You know that feeling, right? Well, that’s just what happened to me. I had painted all the windows, doors and moulding. I was just about to start my clean up when that off white-ish looking radiator was just daring me to test the remaining amount of paint in my can. I went for it and came SO close to finishing. I obviously had to finish what I had started, so off to the store for a quart of Balmy Seas. It was such a bummer, I barely put a dent in that paint can. But, I guess it’s nice to have some extra for touch ups and impromptu projects. My mom is a super human when it comes to painting things. You name it, I’m pretty sure she has painted it. I had seen her paint a few radiators in my day and after checking the specs on the Behr website and the obvious brush strokes on the current paint job, I decided that it was ok to use standard wall paint on the radiator. I really don’t think that I would have been able to achieve the color blocking effect I was going for had I sprayed the radiator white. So back to these door edges. I had some paint leftover from painting Elsa’s toy box and just couldn’t really get enough of it. Painting the edge of a door has seriously got to be the easiest way to add an element of surprise to a room. It is so unobtrusive and a really refreshing way […]

Us Ripplinger’s moved into our house close to a year-and-a-half ago. My plan for our new place was to take care of all the common areas first. You know, the ones that company would use the most and see the most and judge us by. Mission accomplished, we have done just that. However, it has become insanely obvious to me that I have been neglectful of the rest of my home. Most importantly, Elsa’s bedroom. Ugh, sorry Sweetie! You see, when we moved into our new place it was in a whirlwind to remove any representation of the previous inhabitants, whom had been here for 90+ years, and with intention to immediately put our finger print on our new space. This led to hasty paint color selections and half-hearted attempts to make the place ‘ours’. I immediately painted Elsa’s bedroom the same color that I had painted her nursery at the old place, Balmy Seas (Behr 490C-3), and then stopped. There it sat, a pretty color teal with weird brown moulding and a mattress on the floor. A few weeks ago I walked into her room and thought to myself, “Nicole, this bedroom sucks!” Then I got out a roll of painters tape and a huge ass bucket of white paint and went for it. I wasn’t ready to rid the walls of that Balmy Seas paint color entirely. I opted to paint the top half of the room, molding ‘n all, white. Not off white, which some folks swear by, but regular old pure-as-the-driven-snow, white. (Side note-white is totes my new obsession. I would paint every wall in my house white if I knew I could keep it clean.) This girl’s room was getting a make over. I am by no means a professional painter but I used to spend a fair amount of time helping a paint crew paint gallery walls all sorts a crazy and managed to pick up a few tips on how to get a good crisp paint line. Key items for making this happen: laser level and painters tape. Once your painters tape is in place be sure that your tape is stuck down real good. Now, if your anything like me, you’ll want to jump in there with your paint roller and just go for it. Don’t. Take your paint brush and paint along that tape line. I’d give it two coats, depending […]

I grew up in North Central Minnesota, surrounded by land and trees and lakes. We had the luxury of space and plenty of room for gardening of any type be it of the flower or vegetable variety. Both my mother and grandmother kept beautiful sprawling flower gardens while I was growing up. I only hope that one day I will have just as impressive of a garden as they did. Now that I have put down roots in Minneapolis, space for a large garden is a bit difficult to come by. Thankfully the folks over at Fire Escape Farms have got things figured out for us urban-green thumbs. There is a great section with lovely vertical garden planters suitable for flowers or veggies. Check out their selection of reference books and pretty little hand tools too! Our friend Brian turned 30 years old a few weeks ago! This is a milestone that lends itself to massive amounts of celebrating and serves as a good excuse to do crazy shit like jump out of an airplane. An even better way to celebrate is to jump out of an airplane and bring 4 of your buddies with you! One sunny Sunday morning just a few weeks back, Elsa, Lindsey and I got into a car and drove off to Wisconsin to watch our husbands and friends (and dads) jump their crazy asses out of an airplane. Check out this crazy video my guy Aaron shot as he fell from 13,000 feet back to earth. Phew, I’m glad that’s over! West Elm is having a killer Labor Day Sale this weekend! These deals are good online and in stores. A few other places have decided to say good bye to summer by giving us some sweet sweet deals. Check out: GAP, Sierra Trading Post, PUMA, LEVI’s, Betsey Johnson, and REI. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

A few weeks ago we were contacted by children’s clothing company Tea and asked to review their clothing. Tea is a cool little company located in San Francisco, CA. Their globally inspired designs make for comfy and modern clothes for our little dudes and dudettes! They aspire to be global citizens and take great pride in giving back to their community. They have created a line of t-shirts called “little citizens of the world” in which they donate all their proceeds to Global Fund for Children. Not only that their clothing is made of high quality natural fabrics and feels awesome to the touch. Scoops and I got our families together last weekend for some backyard kid fort fun and a few refreshing adult summer beverages. We had the kiddos try on their new duds while exploring and playing in the backyard. It’s amazing to learn how much magic a few sheets and some clothes pins hold. These kids had so much fun playing in an impromptu backyard fort. Finn’s Long Sleeve Purity Tee and Elsa’s Flor Del Mar Pocket Dress, both made of a lovely pima cotton, easily kept up with these two crazy kiddos! Snack Break! Royal the dog tries to get in on a much needed muffin break. We can’t forget Gus, he needs to get in on the action too. Not big enough for fort parties he chills with mom in his new bodysuit perfect for the upcoming fall weather. This clothing is so soft that you don’t feel like you need to wash it a million times before putting next to newborn baby skin. Tea Collection offers up clothing for children of all sizes. Check out their Fall 2011 Children’s Clothing collection, inspired by a cross country trip south of border to Mexico. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

I’ve been slowly getting the first floor of my house in order. I recently gave my dining room a face lift. Now that I have gotten that out of the way I have moved on to the adjoining living room. I started the make over by refinishing the hardwood floors on the entire first floor this past weekend. I’ll be telling you all about that adventure later this week. But, now I’ve got to pick out some sweet rugs for these sweet new floors. I came across this beauty of a rug by DIA Rugs. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I’m so hoping I’ll be able to make this rug mine VERY soon! Did you know that I have never ever seen an episode of Mad Men? I’ve been hearing about how awesome the set design is and how awesome the 50’s were and how awesome Don Draper is, for quite some time now. Well, thanks to Netflix instant queue I have finally experienced Don and the gang in action. Yes, I agree, the set design is killer. Yes, I agree, there is a certain something about that Don Draper. I don’t really know if I fully agree that the 50’s were all that awesome from a sociological standpoint…..but I’ll keep watching. I have a feeling that there will be plenty of late nights in front of the TV trying to get as many episodes under our belts as we possibly can. I can’t end this weeks “Cool Things” without mentioning the coolest thing of them all. Our good buddy and my BFF, Scoops will be getting her very own little baby Gus sometime this week! We have all been anxiously awaiting Gus’ arrival and he has really been putting his Mama, Pop and big bro through quite the roller coaster ride of anticipation. We’re ready to meet you already Gus! Scoops, I’m wishing you a happy and safe and easy and fast delivery of this little guy! Your boys are a very lucky bunch to have you. Love you much Lady! Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

I have been tossing around some plans/ideas for my next huge undertaking at the house. My flower gardens. Now, my home came equipped with a flower garden in the back yard and a few lovely plants scattered here and there but lets face it, it ain’t that pretty. The planning phases for my native/rain gardens have started. For those of you in the MPLS area, check out Metro Blooms. These folks offer one and two day workshops on how to plant, design and execute beautiful rain gardens. They also have tons of resources available to help you plan and garden responsibly in an urban setting. Hey Scoops, I think this is a photo of the plant we were tryin’ to identify from our please-go-into-labor walk the other day. It’s called a Butterfly Weed. Love that orange! So I know, it’s nearing the end of July and we here in MPLS are on the tail end of a MAJOR heat wave but I feel it necessary to wish Annie Larson and All Knitwear a happy “Annie-versary”! Check out her sweet ass-one of kind-handmade with love especially for you-crazy awesomeness-over at ALL Knitwear. I’m not sure why I have never seen this blog before? Elizabeth over at Flourish in Progress is going to tell you a thing or two about most things. And she isn’t going to mince words about any of it. I am pretty sure that once Scoops gets this baby Gus out of her and I get my butterfly weed planted in my back yard, Elizabeth, Scoops and I could easily sit around and drink bubbly drinks on the patio and talk smart about life and its ongoing lessons. Have a good weekend Peeps. Stay cool. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

We celebrated Elsa’s 2nd birthday this past Saturday. It is insane how fast these kiddos grow! It really does seem like yesterday that Aaron and I were bringing this little sweetie baby home from the hospital. Elsa’s has recently decided that she is obsessed with balloons. It made sense that her party center around this obsession. I ordered up 40 balloons and sent Rip to pick them up the morning of the party. I would have ordered more but transporting any more balloons from the party store to our house would have logistically been a bit more difficult than it already was. Evidently Rip had some concern about how he was going to fit said 40 balloons into his car. Not to worry, they all made it home and Elsa was tickled. I found a paper party crown kit at Paper Source. Here they are! King and Queen of the party! I pulled up a couple of recipes from Smitten Kitchen to fill out my party spread. Check out how I made these homemade marshmallows and super delish strawberry cake. Elsa has replaced her desire to watch Toy Story 3 over and over and over again with a desire to watch the British stop motion animation Shaun the Sheep over and over and over and over again. Shaun made an appearance at the party. Elsa thought that was pretty awesome! Other gifts of note: A Purple Princes Papazan Chair. (Say that 5 times fast.) A sweet ass wagon for her and Finn to buzz around in. A killer slide for the backyard. The Dads Choice award for Best Present goes to this Alligator Sprinkler that Finn brought for Elsa. Jeff and Rip had the best time showing the kids how to properly jump through a sprinkler. Thanks everyone for making Elsa’s party super special! Share this...
We are gearing up to get our house painted. We’ve conferred with a few professional painters and have received a couple of quotes. Everything you are supposed to do when embarking on a project of this magnitude. The only thing is, I haven’t quite figured out what color to paint it. To get me inspired I have enlisted the help of kuler.com. Kuler is super helpful when your trying to figure out that perfect color combo. I could spend days flipping through everyone’s color swatches. If you’ve got suggestions on what colors might be perfect for my place, I’m all ears. I recently made over my dining room. Now that the tough stuff is done I’m on the hunt for a perfect rug. I found this blog called Rug Design. What a great jumping off point. Now to find one within my budget! I have been dying over everything in Rachel Blakley’s jewelry shop, Elephantine. All of her pieces are just so easy and elegant. I’ve got my eye on a pair of these mora earrings. I can’t wait to wear them to my next mimosa brunch with the girls. Yards to Gardens.org is a great little organization challenging us to rethink the way we use our outdoor spaces. Did you ever think that maybe instead of a yard covered in grass you might have a vegetable garden surrounding your home? Or perhaps your apartment building could be surrounded by native plants and vegetation? What an awesome concept! Yards to Gardens is also working to connect volunteers to those in North Minneapolis who were affected by the recent tornado. If you are interested in lending a hand, check out their website to see how you can help. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

So it’s here! SUMMER! Now we can all breathe a sigh of relief as we welcome those steamy nights with gin and tonics, lemonade stands at neighborhood garage sales, mimosa soaked patio brunches and most importantly a bounty of fresh fruits and veggies to get us through until that cold MN winter hits us again in November. This past Sunday my Dad called me up with the awesome news that he had picked up 8 pounds of strawberries and was headed to my place to drop them off. What does one do with 8 pounds of strawberries, you ask? Well, first you eat some. Then you eat some more. Then you cut some up and freeze them until you come up with a suitable plan of attack One of the best ways to use a substantial amount of fresh strawberries is to bake a cake. I found this recipe for a pink lady cake over at Smitten Kitchen awhile back. I baked this one up for our friend Lindz back in May. It was such a hit that I’ll be whipping one up for my Sweetie Baby, Elsa’s, 2nd birthday in July! More on that later. Stay tuned. Share this...
This year we are splitting a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) share with some good friends of ours. We are super excited to have weekly deliveries of locally grown fruits and veggies. The folks out at Driftless Organics in Soldiers Grove, WI were getting these veggies of mine going well before the ground was ready for planting. If you are interested in taking part in a Community Supported Agriculture program in your area, Local Harvest can help you get in touch with a farm near you. Elsa has become more and more interested in roleplaying these days. Her newest interest is in playing house. I’ve convinced Elsa’s Dad that this summer would be a good time to start planning the construction of a playhouse. Check out this cool, clean and modern playhouse over at Made by Joel. Aesthetic Nest has a great tutorial on how to make a cut chenille baby blanket. Scoops and I made a trip to Sewtropolis in South MPLS last week and I picked up some fabric to make a couple of these. I can’t wait to see how mine turns out. I hope they are as beautiful as the one in the tutorial. I’ll keep ya posted!. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Close to a year ago we moved our little family from the North end of town to the South side of the city. We have been spending the past year getting to know the ins and outs of our new space and assessing where best to invest our time and money. After all, our new digs are about 100 years old and in need of some major updating. Let me repeat, some MAY-JOR updating. Giving our dining room a make over has been a huge undertaking. Bigger than I ever expected it to be! So much wallpaper! So much lace! The entire house was covered in a layer of plush white carpet. This is fine, but not for us. Aaron and a small army of friends spent many hours pulling up this carpet, it’s padding and all of the nails, staples and tacks holding it all down. Underneath we found some nice old hardwood. Much better! We’ll need to be refinishing these floors but all in due time. Elsa celebrated her First Birthday at the new house. You may remember reading about her party here. Here’s the line up of all her B-Day cards as well as a close up of the old wall paper. Lucky for me this wallpaper came down fairly quick. I did buy myself a little steamer and that stuff came down like nobodies business! Things are looking a little bit different now days. I can’t say I wasn’t inspired by the previous color palette. The former owners love of wallpaper was not lost on me either. I found this wallpaper designed by Basso & Brooke over at Graham & Brown and decided I had to have it. I really love the sophisticated illustration and how it grows into a modern version of a traditional damask-ish pattern when you view it from a distance. Almost like one of those crazy pictures you used to stare at as a kid in hopes to see the spaceship or the dolphin appear when you unfocused and crossed your eyes. I’ve always wanted one but never had an appropriate place to hang one. Now I do. I like my new light. What an improvement! I’m slowly collecting artwork for the walls. I found this sweet little print at the MCAD Art Sale this past year. Check out the Too Many Suitors website for a peek at more sweet little sweet […]

Elsa turned 1 on 7/16. It is truly amazing what can happen in a year! In a mere 365 days, my Girl Elsa has gone from a tiny little helpless bundle to a walking, babbling, curiously independent little girl. This blows my mind! We had a Birthday cookout for her, complete with brats, potato salad, fruit salad, baked beans and CAKE!!! We invited our Family and Friends and made a great afternoon of it. Elsa was a good helper during the preparations. Here we are making potato salad. I found this cake over at Wisk Kid WAY back when Elsa was just a brand new girl. I decided the second that I saw it that it was the perfect cake to commemorate the first year of my Girls life. This cake is delicious. You should make it. Here is the cake, all dolled up and ready for the party. My frosting didn’t come together as well as I would have liked it to, but it tasted pretty dang good! My homie, M. Stewart helped me make these tissue paper pom-poms. Big shout out to my other Lady, K. Johnson for her help putting these things together as well. Doing crafty crafts with your friends is always a “good thing”. I fashioned this Birthday Banner out of some fabric that I had left over from Elsa’s bird mobile. You can learn more about that little project here. To accompany our brats, I soaked some red cabbage in some apple cider vinegar and salt overnight. It is a perfect alternative to sour kraut and adds a beautiful pop of color to any table. Elsa loves raspberry jelly sandwiches. I thought it appropriate that they be part of our spread. They were a big hit! We had been practicing how to blow out birthday candles in the days leading up to the party. Unfortunately, we never practiced on a real cake with a real candle. Elsa wasn’t exactly sure what she needed to do at this stage in the game. I helped her out and we got though it unscathed! Here is an inside look at that 6 layer birthday cake. So that is it! One year down, many, many, many more to look forward to!Thank you to ALL of our Family and Friends for being so generous with your time and love during Elsa’s first year! We are a lucky, lucky bunch […]

We came to the conclusion, the second we got home from the hospital with Elsa, that we had outgrown this little house we have been calling ‘home’ for the past 5 years. It is bitter sweet, mostly sweet though. You have served us well tiny house, but we must be leaving you now. At the end of the month you will be able to find your favorite family at the house shown in the above photo! We are super stoked for redecorating, hide and seek games, guest bedrooms, crafty craft rooms, rec rooms, formal dining rooms, eat in kitchens and 2 car garages. Not to mention the fact that we are moving real close to all our good friends! I’ll keep you posted on our home improvement projects as they occur. First thing on the docket, removal of wall to wall carpeting on floor 1 & 2. Stay tuned, this ought to be good! Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

A few posts ago I told you how I made some super delicious cupcakes for my lady Valeria’s baby shower. Now that the shower is over it is safe for me to share with you the baby sling that I made for her. I had a ton of fabric left over from when I made Elsa’s crib bumpers and the fabric is just too pretty to not use again so I resurrected the Pop Daisy fabric out of my fabric box and got to it. First thing’s first. I cut two 53 inch x 23 inch pieces of fabric and placed them face to face. You can measure to fit the Mom you are making this for so your fabric sizes may vary in length. The width of your fabric will determine how deep your sling is. Adjust as you see fit. I then sewed along three of the edges to make a sort of super long pillow case. Leaving one of the short sides open. Once I turned this pillowcase right side out, I ironed it. Then, you’ll want to take a look at the end that you left open and turn about a 1/2 inch inside to finish off the edge real nice. Take your iron to it as a nice crease will make the fabric stay folded. Now, take the opposite end and put it inside the open end. (see above) Stick some pins in here to hold the two ends together. You should now have a tube of fabric. Bring this tuber over to your sewing machine and stitch about a 1/4 inch in from the edge. Are you still with me? Good. Let’s continue, shall we? Once you have stitched one pass, line your presser foot up with the stitch you just made and put a second line of stitches in. Once you have this done you will be good to start hauling your babe around. When your baby is tiny, you can take her around like this. My baby is not tiny anymore. This bear was kind enough to demonstrate what a tiny baby might look like in this sling. When your baby gets bigger than that bear, you can tote her around in this sling like this. Share this... This first ever baby will be a girl baby so I felt inclined to whip up some pink cupcakes for the baby shower this past Saturday. Now. I have yet to perfect my own recipe for delicious cupcakes so for these cupcakes I will rely on the recipe of one experienced actress/comidian. Amy Sedaris has yet to let me down in the cupcake recipe department so next time you need some cupcakes, do this: 1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter1 1/2 cups sugar2 eggs2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder1/4 teaspoon salt2 1/2 cups flour1 1/4 cups milk Mix all that shit up and bake it in an oven that has been pre heated to 375° for 20 minutos, or until those cakes are perfectly golden brown. Amy says you could get 24 cupcakes outta this, I got 23. Weird.. We all know that we can’t make cupcakes and not frost them. So my dilemma with this frosting situation is this: Most buttercream frosting recipes that I have been in contact with call for the usage of an egg or two. Yeah, a raw egg. Once it is all mixed in there with the sugar and the milk, you don’t know it is there. But you know who might notice it? A tiny little baby that is still cookin’ inside her Mum’s tum, that’s who. So since you can’t give your pregg lady friend raw egg frosting, I listened to our old Friend, Amy S., and did this: 1 box confectioners’ sugar1 stick unsalted butter1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract1/4 cup milk or light cream Whip this stuff up good and plop it on your cupcakes. Be warned, this is some sweet sweet frosting. Really, it seriously is. It’s good though!. For a pop of color I added some orange nonpareils which I thought to be an unexpected contrast to the pink frosting. Fun, right!? I used these sparingly as I didn’t want to add too much more sweetness. Ok now, this little lady should be hatching this April. I’ll keep you posted once she is here. I know I can’t wait to meet her! Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter
