Happy Spring from the Cabin Bartender! After many endless, frigid, whiskey soothed months of yet another Minnesotan hibernation, spring has finally sprung. The sunny afternoon has replaced our darkened days. Blades of tired grass are being slowly reanimated by the welcome warmth of our new season. Life is returning to the backyards of our homes! If there is ever a season for a champagne cocktail, spring is it. Pick up a bottle of bubbly and try this celebratory cocktail. The bitterness and herbal complexity of Campari, a classic summer spirit, nestles right up against the sweet bubbly dryness of the sparkling wine. If you want a stronger kick in the jean shorts, add some rum and lots of fresh lime and you have a cool new sweaty summer buddy: -Uncle Matt, Cabin Bartender The ‘Pane N’ Pari ▼ 1.25 oz Campari ▼ .75 oz Rum ▼ Juice of 1 lime or fresh grapefruit juice ▼ 1/2 cup champagne ▼ 1 oz soda water Add ingredients in order, top with lots of champagne and a splash of soda water. Serve over ice and garnish with a slice of lime. Cabin Bartender / Matt Scharenbroich Matt Scharenbroich, better known as Finn & Gus’ amazing Uncle Matt, is an expert at making food and drinks delicious. When he’s not feeding his friends the best cocktails, he’s making cool art and animations, you can find him over here! Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

I have been searching for a way to enhance my classic winter cocktail standby, the Manhattan. This cocktail is difficult to modify, because with the correct ingredients, it is perfect. My favorite version is made with Old Overholt Rye Whiskey, Punt e Mes vermouth, and Bittercube Cherry Vanilla Bitters. A Manhattan is the perfect companion to long late winter sunsets and endless games of cribbage. The Portage is my reinterpretation of the Manhattan, using Woodford Reserve Bourbon, Ruby Port in place of sweet vermouth, maple syrup, and Fee Brother’s Walnut Bitters. I highly suggest snowshoeing the rugged, wind whipped, and snowy terrain surrounding the shores of Cross Lake before you kick off your boots, light a fire, and thaw your icy limbs with this delicious cocktail. -Uncle Matt, Cabin Bartender Continue after the jump for “The Portage” cocktail recipe The Portage ▼ 2 1/4 oz Kentucky Bourbon (Woodford Reserve, or whatever you prefer) ▼ 1 oz Ruby Port ▼ 1/2 tsp real maple syrup ▼ 3-4 dashes of Fee Brother’s Walnut Bitters ▼ Garnish with cherries Combine ingredients with ice in a cocktail shaker. Stir vigorously for 30 seconds, and strain into your favorite cocktail glass. *Leather chair highly recommended Cabin Bartender / Matt Scharenbroich Matt Scharenbroich, better known as Finn & Gus’ amazing Uncle Matt, is an expert at making food and drinks delicious.
Like a sunny day at the winter cabin, this drink is bright and sweet and has a comforting smokiness. When the fireplace is roaring and the cards are dealt, the Lumberjack is the perfect cocktail to quench the thirst of the mightiest lumberjack. Its origin is legendary. One day after a long day of gigantic logging, my big buddy Paul Bunyan came over to the cabin. Instead of his usual barrel of barley pop, I offered up this new cocktail. When he tasted it, Paul walked out into the woods, fell to his knees and wept with joy. Incredibly, this majestic outburst of happiness created the deep and clear waters of Crosslake. The Lumberjack ▼ 3 oz Brandy ▼ .75 oz Scotch ▼ 1 oz Fresh Lemon Juice ▼ 1 oz Maple Syrup ▼ 1.5 Droppers of Bittercube Blackstrap Bitters Shake vigorously and pour over crushed ice Top it off with hard cider and garnish with a twist of lemon Cabin Bartender / Matt Scharenbroich Matt Scharenbroich, better known as Finn & Gus’ amazing Uncle Matt is an expert at making food and drinks delicious.
