I had decided in January, that 2018 would be my year of saying "Yes" to everything. Trying new things, meeting new people, all that stuff regular confident people do. As a result, in February, my friend Ashley Goldman from The Gold Hive dared me to go to a local Twin Cities book panel event to introduce myself to Melissa Coleman (aka The Faux Martha). I begrudgingly said, “Sure” because Ashley is my Accountability Partner (™). I was terrified. Big social events where I don’t know anyone are NOT my thing...

It’s been months in the making but it’s finally here! I’m super excited to share with you guys that our home has been featured in the recent issue of BHG’s, Do It Yourself Magazine! I seriously couldn’t be more thrilled (or flattered) that DIY asked me to be a part of their spring issue, and contribute some of my v own projects for the mag. If you remember, I mentioned once (or twice) that the team from Do It Yourself came to visit me for the better part of a week this summer. It was a thrill to have a whole production team in my house, photographing and styling our spaces. They came during the hottest week, temps were nearing 100º every day, and our poor window air conditioners were working their hardest to keep our house cool and comfortable for our new guests. I’m sure the photos featured in the magazine will resemble the house you guys normally see, but for me, witnessing someone else photograph and style the house added a whole other level of newness to the spaces. It was eye opening to see the stylists point of view when it came to spiffing up and highlighting features of our home, and crazy to see photographs taken with strobe lights (as opposed to good old day light) and fine tuned by an art director. The kids and I had fun getting to know the whole DIY team, and by the time they left there were sweaty hugs all around. Anyways, if you guys feel like checking out my 12 page (BAAAAAHHH!) spread, grab a copy at any news stand OR download the spring edition right here. Below you can see a little taste of a few select page layouts. So pumped! Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

TYTE JEFF VID Happy Friday friends! Today I’m sharing a more personal post, but thought it might be of interest to some of you – I know a few of you alls have good taste in music ;). The husband dropped a brand new music video today (with his band TYTE JEFF) in anticipation of his upcoming full length record titled “Lutheran Teens”. First of all, I think the song as well as the whole album rules, and I am v proud of this guy for following through on doing the things that make him creatively happy. Second of all, this video is awesome! It was conceived and created by our long time friend Paul Danhauser, he’s spent the better part of a year working on it – big kudos to him. Thirdly it features a very brief cameo by yours truly. Anyway, if you’re feeling antsy at work or home today I highly recco you give it a watch! Share this...
I stopped dead in my tracks during a quick trip to the Ikea marketplace last week. Uh, there was a display of all these wonderful textiles and patterns, I had to touch and look at everything, and swooped up a few things for the house. This is the new Ikea collection, Svärtan (aka Darkness!), designed by Martin Bergström and Indian fashion students in New Delhi. +++ svärtan collection +++ Inspired by the everyday textures and pattern found in India, Bergström wanted to create an interpretation of India that was different than the way it was “perceived in the West as colorful, golden and shiny”. The New Delhi students form The National Institute of Fashion Technology, workshopped with Bergström creating a poetic abstract designs based on unexpected pattern and texture found in the city. I am entranced with the organic mood of this entire collection, and I don’t even know why because it’s kind of out of my norm to be so goth. Anyways, just thought I’d point it out, might be worth a trip to the old ‘kea. In other news, I am about to head out on the most epic journey! I have a back-to-back date night set with my favorite guys, ⚡ The Killers ⚡ to celebrate their ten year anniversary of the Sam’s Town album, in fabulous Las Vegas, NV. You may never see me again because I might die. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Budz!!! Next week will mark the six year anniversary of us Allen’s moving into this house! Back then, this bad boy was only 100 years old! I think it’s safe to say that if I my house could speak it would say that its had its funnest most raging six year since us guys moved in. Sorry old boring owners, but this house didn’t even know what it was missing. In the past I’ve done recaps showcasing the changes that were made throughout the years. This year I’ll just be updating the house tour page and I highly suggest you check it out (‘specially if yer new around here)! Sorting through all the pics of the house has been really inspiring and restorative for me. It’s getting me so amped about blogging and what it means to me, and how hanging out with the people of the internet has been fun and cool. Take a look at the ‘before & afters’ to get a feel of where things started – they go chronologically newest to oldest (still need to update a few, but you get the idea). Sorrizzle in advance if you’re viewing it on a mobile device, I’m still working the kinks out on the responsive side of things (I’m still living in the 2013 version of the internet). Things have been crazy busy lately, but I’ll get it done soon. I’ve also got a source list of the basement reno coming soon, this whole six-year-anniversary-thing just had me so distracted ;) Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Hey Guys! Whad-up? Thing are nuts around here. The kids finished school last week, the basement is finally getting started tomorrow, I’m in a panic because my Japanese Maple is dying, and my house looks like a complete shit show. Hope your week is more contained then mine. I wanted to share this cool kid-gift with you last Friday, but things got so insanely busy I just ran out of time. I hope the whole summer isn’t like this. ANYWAY, the “Fort Kit” is my favorite go-to kids present, because it’s easy and fun, can be personalized and DUH, kids lurve forts! Target basically has you covered for all the supplies you’ll need for a kit. Start with getting a container, I was able to score this wire box in the storage section and it even came with the number ‘3’ on it – which was a good thing because the gift was for an actual three-year-old. Then I swung by the bedding section and found a king sized flat sheet. Next I headed over to the dollar section – this is where the magic happens. Fill that puppy full of candy, coloring books, cups, glow-sticks, bubbles, and whatever other wonderfulness you might find over there. Finish it off with a bunch of colorful clips (also from the $1 section) and your prez will be good-to-go. Ta-da, Birfday Magik. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Bros! Check it out, you can now find Deuce Cities HenHouse in App form. Isn’t that the coolest? It’s packed with all the same info you can find on the blog, but is super well organized and slick to use on your phone. The cool folks over at DWNLD helped me get this app and running. DWNLD is an app itself and it allows people of the world to customize their content and get it easily transformed into app form. I loved the experience of creating the app with DWNLD’s easy to use interface – literally what you see is what you get, just choose a theme and customize it with fonts and colors. As a design and coding nerd it was really exciting to see my blog take shape in app form. Anyway, for you true HenHouse heads out there, I encourage you to download the app and give it a spin. I think you’ll like what you see :) Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Whazzup guys? I didn’t really plan on taking a week off, but then I guess I wasn’t really being realistic either. The kids are on spring break this week, plus I’ve been babysitting one of their little pals. I am ready for them all to be back in school, I swear they’re ganging up on me. It’s hard to believe I used to do this all-day-kid-watching-thing full time. I thought I could manage it all but it turns out there was just NO way productive posting was gonna happen this week. I do have one pretty cool thing to share. I was featured in this months edition of Adore Home Magazine! Adore is an online magazine so you can all cruise over here to take a look, plus this month issue is all about the bloggers, there’s pages and pages of eye candy and links to good reads.
Yo, bros. I am not even lying when I tell you that one of my favorite places in the whole entire world is the neighborhood hardware store. I’ve said this out loud many times. I seriously love it there! My career ambitions after my kids both start going to school full-time are to work at the hardware store, among all of the wonderful things one might ever need or want. My local hardware store is an Ace, so when the marketing team for Ace reached out to me and asked me to be on the Ace 2015 blogger panel I couldn’t say YES fast enough. You may have noticed I don’t do a lot of sponsored posts around these parts. That’s because a lot of the sponsors I get presented with aren’t usually products that I use on the day-to-day and I’m a bad liar. But Ace, now that’s a different story. I was jealous when I saw Yellow Brick Home working with them last year. I wanted to know what I had to do to get in on that. So what does this means for the blog? It means that Ace will sponsor a post once a month for 2015. Ace has a few pre-determined topics that I’ll involve in the posts, but really the content is all up to me. I can make it whatever I want, isn’t that great? The Ace post topic-to-do list reminds me of an art-school-college syllabus and I’m super excited about having to be creative and make the most of these posts. Plus because Ace is awesome there will be lots of cool giveaways for you guys. I’m so stoked! Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Sometimes one of your best budz might be getting married, and you might be invited to a sexy bachelorette party, and because talking about underwear in public in front of strangers sometimes makes you shy, you might decide to just make lingerie out of beer boxes, because honestly, it would just be much funnier. It took me a few days to assemble this strange woven masterpiece, but it was totally worth it. It was funny – and she loved it, so we all win. Not my first time avoiding public embarrassment at a lingerie party – a few years ago I crocheted these things – I guess I have issues. Long story very short. One of my favorite pals to drink beer and make very funny jokes with, is getting married to one of my oldest (as in way back, not age) and best friends this weekend. If you didn’t already know, it’s Matt and Katie – I talk about them often on the blogs, they’re the ones who live in Savannah and have the sweet family cabin that we love to spend time at. We can not wait for this blessed celebraish, we’ve been anticipating this amazing event all damn summer! Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Yes! You, guys! It finally feels like spring around here! I know some of you guys in other parts of the country and world have been experiencing spring for weeks already. Not us, but in Minnesota it could always be worse. We still have a few colder days ahead of us, but it’s warmed up enough to melt all the snow and even a few buds are starting to appear on the trees and bushes. I have been scouring my gardens daily for signs of life and am finally starting to see little glimpse. It’s all so exciting, I can’t even stand it! Finn and I planted a few seeds in early March, I was going to write a post about it, but you know, my computer died and all that stuff. Now that it’s early April we have some tiny little plants in our seed pots. We tried something totally new this year. Instead of sowing veggies or zinnias from seed, which were never able to pull off the transition from seed pot to garden, we are trying to grow impatiens and petunias! This is something that I would typically buy a flat of from the garden center. I figured it was at least worth a try to grow them on my own, especially since impatiens grow quickly and are pretty hardy. I have to say, I’m super impressed with the impatiens. We used a tray system from park seed and the seeds are doing really well. I’ve had difficulty with other seed domes in the past, but this one is really heavy duty and self-watering (yeah-yer). In another month I would imagine that they will be similar in size of nursery plants and probably ready to go straight into the gardens and containers. The benefit was that I was able to purchase impatiens that were more sun tolerant – this is not always an option you can get at the nursery. The petunias on the other hand are still a little scrawny, but I’m not giving up on them yet. “Hang in there little guys!” I spent almost the entire day yesterday out in my garden. I’m on a mission to clean up all my gardens, edge borders and get the patio furniture cleaned up for this years backyard season. Last year I discovered a way to really give life back to my wood patio furniture. I repeated […]

Yeah, Buddies! Oh what a stressful week it has been. I’ve mentioned that I love coding css, but I absolutely dread dealing with all the technical wordpress-y stuff. I think that awful website experiences just think I am so cool, that they just love hanging out with me. Sunday was supposed to be the big day that I installed my new site on a new wordpress theme, but the internet had a different plan for me. There are so many gut wrenching bad details that I don’t want to relive, so I will just spare you the bad stuff and share with you my new site instead! I am so happy with the new look, it’s like a more grown up version of the old site, don’t ya think? I wanted to go clean and minimal – but still have a site infused with my own style and aesthetic. I love the contrast of flat 2D internet surfaces (like the post boxes in the content column) juxtaposed with a bit of 3D illusions (like the drop shadows) seen in the sidebar. You know I still love my tape strips, I had to keep them, but I just updated them a bit. It’s like flat digital washi tape, you guys. The triangles had to go, I do adore them, but it was time. You’ll notice that I decided to use them as a break in between my posts instead of as an entire background. I updated the logo – I’m really into the Core Circus font found over at myfonts.com. Now it emphasizes “Henhouse” instead of “Deuce Cities” (I totally regret my blog name choice sometimes). I fixed the position of the Navigation bar so if you are on a desktop browser you will be able to access from anywhere on the site – even if you scroll to the bottom of the page. I muted the colors and went heavy on the black and white, if you notice, these same color patterns have been happening in my home a lot lately too. I think the comment section turned out really well, and I hope you agree. I wanted it to be clean and simple, but still pretty – comments are hard to style because there are so many ways you, and your readers can respond to something, but I think for the most part it is all working well and […]

Hey guys! Just had to share this quick, cool thing with you. My old man, Mr. Jeff Allen (aka Tyte Jeff) has been working on writing and recording some cool songs over the last year. Jeff had spent 10 years in an indie rock band, that had some local and national success called, The Plastic Constellations. After a five year hiatus he just couldn’t stand to not making songs anymore. At the beginning of last year he made it his goal to get six songs recorded, which he did! Now, he’s starting to play shows, and will be releasing an awesome EP in January. I’m super proud of him because recording an album with two kids, and a very full time job, takes a lot of dedication, plus the new jamz sound awesome. Anyways, he’s got a band together with some tyte bros, called Tyte Jeff and their first show is tonight! I made him a tyte website for his tyte band, you can check out his new song “Loose Crowns” over there. And if any of you local dudez/ettez are interested, he’s playing two sets tonight at the Terminal bar, yes, the Terminal bar, first show starts at 9. Share this...
So this post is a little off the usual topics around here, but I couldn’t resist writing about it. Last weekend we watched the documentary “Salinger.” How I made it not knowing this doc existed is mind blowing to me, but it does. Like many people, Catcher in the Rye changed my life when read it at the age of 12. Since then I have been a devoted fan, and follower of J.D. Salinger – and have always kept tabs on his life and his admirable craziness. I’m one of the nutzo readers that owns multiple copies of all of Salinger’s books – all chalked full of underlined text. I try and reread them whenever I get a chance to actually read. “Well. you know the ducks that swim around it? In the springtime and all? Do you happen to know where they go in the wintertime, by any chance?” The first time I read Catcher in the Rye I identified with it in such an incredible way, no book has come close to effecting me, and my life so profoundly. Just like so many other readers of Salinger, I feel a connection to Holden Caulfield. To me, I felt like I was the girl version of Caulfield. When everything was feeling insane and my teenage life was feeling out of control, I could relate to Caulfield, he was the exact manifestation of what I wanted to be in that moment (so incredibly cheesy and cliche I know, but so true, I suck). I carried my first copy of Catcher in the Rye with me everywhere, even in college, I could always find it floating around my back pack. If I traveled, I would throw it in my suitcase – just in case I needed to call on my old friend Holden. I’ve used the same bookmark, a lucky one dollar silver certificate, since the first time I read it, and I love how beat to hell the cover is. It’s probably one of my top three favorite objects of all time. If you are not familiar with J.D. Salinger, the story goes like this: In 1952, after The Catcher in the Rye grew to fame, J.D. Salinger moved to Cornish, New Hampshire, where he lived and wrote at his compound, rarely making contact with the public. He wrote and published three more books after moving to Cornish, and then […]

So, I got my first even mention in a magazine – and I’m pretty stoked about it. The local rag, Mpls – St. Paul Magazine has a Home & Design issue out, and I was included! They spotlighted my DIY I did for West Elm earlier in the year, you can check out my color dipped candle shades and terrarium here in case you missed it. If you’re interested in checking out the issue, you can pick it up at select locations around town, or order it through the magazine’s website. There’s lots of inspiring designers and homes featured in the issue, so grab a copy if you’re local. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Guys, this might be old news to some of you, but I wanted to make sure that if you didn’t know, you know now, that Google Reader is going away to that big binary palace in the sky. Yep that’s right, as of July 1st, Google Reader will be no more. It makes me sad to see my old buddy go. Even though Google Reader is very basic, and a bit unattractive, it is all I have ever known when it comes to keeping up with my favorite blogs. I’m totally one of those people that never tries anything new at a restaurant. Once I find what works, I stick with it. Moving on and trying new feed readers was a bit scary for me, but I’ve found a few that I love, and wanted to share them with you! I have now discovered Feedly and Bloglovin’ which help me read the internet in a much, much, much prettier way. Who knew? I should’ve tried this sooner! Both Feedly and Bloglovin‘ make it super easy to migrate all your favorite feeds over from Google Reader, really it only takes a few quick minutes and you’re done. So if you haven’t yet, migrate your feeds, (just click the links above) and make sure to include the old Henhouse in there. I love this little thing we’ve got going on here, and I don’t want you to miss out! Thanks! Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

I’m super excited about this post today! The coolest shoes in town are now available online!! That’s right, Ina Grau shoes are on the internet!! I got my first pair last summer and I love them in a major way. They are one of my favorite possessions I’ve ever had, fer real. They are so super cool and they make me feel awesome every time I put them on. I think you should probably have a pair too. What’s that you say? You don’t know about Ina Grau, well let me tell you a little more. Ina Grau was founded in 2011 by my good buddy Crystal Quinn and her business partner Luisa Fernanda Garcia-Gomez. Together they have been making hand crafted shoes that combine midwestern style with Columbian roots. Their shoe designs incorporate fun textiles like denim, graphic patterns (inspired by Columbian culture), traditional material such as vegetable tanned leather, and the coolest polka-dot soles. Mix it all together and you are left with one pair of amazing shoes. Not to mention the awesome addition of brass tipped laces that come in a variety of colors; my fav, the salmon. Now you know, so stop what your doing and go check out the spring & summer collection this instant! You’ll be in love, I promise. Share this...
