Hey Team! I wanted to dedicate an entire blog post to just how much I love the innovation that brought me/you/us the Samsung Frame TV. If you’re not familiar with the Frame TV, it’s a TV that moonlights as framed art! Samsung designed a TV that displays digital art (when in art mode), is able to be mounted flush on a wall just like a piece of artwork would, and the frame itself can be swapped out with interchangeable magnetic frames...

Hello ma friends! I am one of those annoying people that enjoys celebrating their birthday. My brother and I have birthday's three days apart in the month of December and my Mom always did a really good job of trying to make us both feel special on each of our own birthdays. I have to blame her for instilling a true, unabashed love of my favorite 24 hours of the entire year, deep within me. On a side note, I unintentionally gave birth to two humans with July birthday's less than two weeks apart, and I try my hardest to have special birthday celebrations for both of them too - passing on the torch to yet another generation of annoying birthday-loving-jerks.

It’s been months in the making but it’s finally here! I’m super excited to share with you guys that our home has been featured in the recent issue of BHG’s, Do It Yourself Magazine! I seriously couldn’t be more thrilled (or flattered) that DIY asked me to be a part of their spring issue, and contribute some of my v own projects for the mag. If you remember, I mentioned once (or twice) that the team from Do It Yourself came to visit me for the better part of a week this summer. It was a thrill to have a whole production team in my house, photographing and styling our spaces. They came during the hottest week, temps were nearing 100º every day, and our poor window air conditioners were working their hardest to keep our house cool and comfortable for our new guests. I’m sure the photos featured in the magazine will resemble the house you guys normally see, but for me, witnessing someone else photograph and style the house added a whole other level of newness to the spaces. It was eye opening to see the stylists point of view when it came to spiffing up and highlighting features of our home, and crazy to see photographs taken with strobe lights (as opposed to good old day light) and fine tuned by an art director. The kids and I had fun getting to know the whole DIY team, and by the time they left there were sweaty hugs all around. Anyways, if you guys feel like checking out my 12 page (BAAAAAHHH!) spread, grab a copy at any news stand OR download the spring edition right here. Below you can see a little taste of a few select page layouts. So pumped! Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

+++ Blush | Black | White | Copper +++ Hello, I love spray paint. I’ve never been afraid of buying an Ikea veneered dresser, brown outdoor furniture, orange clearance aisle lamps, or a yellow thrift store vase because it doesn’t come in the right color. BECAUSE, spray paint gives me the power to make all of the things all of my favorite shades of flat black, chalky white, pale pink or copper. I’ve come to have a steady supply of these four essential colors oh hand, at all times, no questions asked. I know it can be overwhelming to stare down that hardware store aisle and see an abundant amount of color, finish and brand options, Imma help you wit dat. As a bonus, I’ll pass a long a few tips for achieving a perfect finish. I’d like to think that I have developed a pretty solid method. TIPS FOR USING SPRAY PAINT Choose a ventilated location. I almost always spray outside, if I have to, I’ll do it in the garage. I try and save projects for the non-winter months, but since you can’t always know when you need a spray paint fix, you can use a utility room or something similar for a quick project. Which brings me to my next tip, spray paint doesn’t like the cold. Don’t spray paint outdoors in cold weather, k? Use a cardboard box to prevent overspray. Don’t want your grass to sport a cool outline of whatever it is that you are painting? Then use that large cardboard amazon box as a spray booth, dummy. A spray paint job doesn’t necessarily mean a quick job, take your time to apply thin even coats of paint. Hold the spray paint can at least 10″ from the surface of your project, this is the easiest and best way to avoid drips. Don’t hold the nozzle down! Spray in short quick bursts. Keep the can in motion, don’t rest on one spot for too long or bad things will happen. Clean the nozzle with a pin or towel at the end of each project. I can’t tell you how many cans of clogged up spray paint it has taken me to learn this lesson. HAPPY SPRAYING!

It seems like every summer I macrame a chair or two, this year I went a little buck and am up to two sets, that is four chairs my people!! It also seems like every year they get a little cooler too. I guess I’m just honing this craft. Anyways, I get lots of e-mails about these chairs, and I just wanted to show off this season’s weaves while reminding the fine people of the internet that I have made two video tutorials on this subject (1 good one, and 1 kinda good one), as well as well as a written how-to with pictures! My brother and sis-in-law are living examples of learning from my vids. They are in the process of making two chairs for some budz as a wedding gift – which I think is a super sweet idea!
Friends! Can I just start by saying that I am feeling stoked to get back in the swing of things! I already love 2016, it just feels right. It was nice to have a bit of a break from house stuff the last few weeks, and now that the basement is almost done. Done. DONE!, I will be able to move on to other projects. I am so ready for other projects, and so over working on the basement! For fun, last night I spent an hour or so going through my posts from the last year to refresh my memory and take a look at what has gone on around the house throughout the last 12 months. Looking back made me really excited to get back at it and make new goals for this year. Sometime my brain likes to make me think I’m stuck in one place, or that I’m only ever busy and nothing ever gets done, never advancing. This brain, I tell you what, it needs to shut up. Thankfully, I have this blog and am able to sit back and look at a years worth of home repairs and updates, and by the light of this screen I can sit here and see that all the work actually adds up to something. There was a definite lapse in momentum this year when in May, my right hand was broken due to a highly not cool dog bite. I wasn’t able to do big projects for about eight weeks while I let my arm heal. By the time I was able to use my wrecked appendage, I found that I had become way too good at enjoying the summer. Although mad chilling is a good activity to partake in from time-to-time, it’s just not my style. When it was time to hunker down for the fall and get back at finishing up some big projects, I encountered some intense moments of uneasiness and anxiety due to situations way out of my control. That made it especially hard to stay motivated. I took the blog at a slower pace the last few months, trying to prioritize, focusing on spending my time most efficiently. The truth is, I spend a bulk of my day carting kids around to school. I find slices of time where I try and get things done, but more often than then not, when […]

Did you guys happen to see the new line of Ikea planters on the Livet Hemma blog yesterday? If you’re in need a little dose of spring, may I highly suggest you pick up a few of these. I had seen the watering can two weeks ago, and snatched it up right away – I’ve been wanting a pretty watering can for a long time, and for $10 bucks, this one fit the bill and didn’t hurt my wallet.
Look what I see buddies, it’s the prettiest bottle of gin ever made, and it’s made right here in Minnesota. Can you even believe it? Goodbye Hedricks, hosta la vista Bombay Sapphire, from this day forward I’m shacking up with Solveig Gin. I promise there will never be another bottle of gin sitting on my bar cart – except for the raging parties, then I’ll bring out the cheap stuff, har har. Our good pals, Matt and Katie brought us this pretty bottle as a hostess gift a couple of weekends ago. I was smitten by the bottle of course, but even more happy to find out about this brands local roots. Based in Northern Minnesota’s Skane Township, right near the Canadian border, Far North Spirits Distillery started farming and production a year ago. Hazlet Winter Rye seed is planted and harvested up on the family farm, (now in it’s fourth generation of farmers) and harvested and distilled in the same area. Bringing craft spirits from farm to glass, including bourbon, rum and of gin. You can find Solveig gin at many local Twin Cities liquor stores, as well as in New York, New Jersey and North Dakota.
Sometimes one of your best budz might be getting married, and you might be invited to a sexy bachelorette party, and because talking about underwear in public in front of strangers sometimes makes you shy, you might decide to just make lingerie out of beer boxes, because honestly, it would just be much funnier. It took me a few days to assemble this strange woven masterpiece, but it was totally worth it. It was funny – and she loved it, so we all win. Not my first time avoiding public embarrassment at a lingerie party – a few years ago I crocheted these things – I guess I have issues. Long story very short. One of my favorite pals to drink beer and make very funny jokes with, is getting married to one of my oldest (as in way back, not age) and best friends this weekend. If you didn’t already know, it’s Matt and Katie – I talk about them often on the blogs, they’re the ones who live in Savannah and have the sweet family cabin that we love to spend time at.
Hey-a, Folks! I have a confession. For the last 4 or 5 months I have been a bad housekeeper. Keeping the house tidy used to be something I kinda actually enjoyed, but then things got busy. I’ve been spending a lot of time focusing on the blog, gardening and hanging with the kids, avoiding the daily cleaning chores that used to bring me peace and calm. I especially avoided the deeper cleaning aspects of keeping a tidy home. When we decided that I would stay home with the kids part of the arrangement was that I would be responsible for keeping the home (aka cleaning up). I know that kind of sounds old fashioned but the entire reason that I was staying home was so that I could be with the kids during the day, and it would allow us all more time together as a family on nights and weekends. I had been managing a restaurant for a long time, and those were not typical or family friendly hours. This was a chance for us to be together more often, and we wouldn’t have to spend our precious family time cleaning. We just recently got a new vacuum and my love affair with keeping a clean home has been reignited. We had a long run with a more affordable hoover wind tunnel. It broke a few years ago and we spent almost as much money as it would have cost brand new to have it fixed, at the time we didn’t really have the dough to go out and buy a new vacuum. We promised that the next time the vacuum gave out we would use a little rainy day money and invest in something that would last. After much research and debate we decided on this Miele S6270 vac (not sponsored or anything b-t-dubs) and so far it’s been the best. What I really like about it is that it does an awesome job cleaning the hardwood floors, and it’s easy to get under furniture. It even sucks up the little dust pieces along the edges of cabinets, dirt our old vac was to clunky to get at. I hardly use the broom anymore. I also love that it’s a canister vacuum and I can tuck it away in the mudroom cabinets instead of downstairs in the basement. Now it’s always within reach. In celebration of the new […]

When I was thumbing through the June issue of Elle Decor magazine I stopped dead in my tracks when I came to a page featuring beautifully handmade Nicaraguan hammocks. I thought to myself “Scoops! You need a GD hammock”! Now I don’t know if I really need a hammock in my backyard, I very much like the idea of one, but in reality it would probably take up too much space. However, I do totally adore these hammocks from The Hang a Hammock Collective. Guess what else guys? They are totally affordable. Not usually something you come across in Elle Decor. Prices range from $94 to $115. Check out the collectives Etsy store over here and don’t even try and convince me why a hammock would be a good idea for me, I totally don’t need the encouragement, my husband will thank you ;) Share this...
I’m sharing a post today that has nothing to do with my home, decor or design. It has nothing to do with why you guys typically visit me – and I hope that’s cool. Today I just had to take a sec to say how proud I am of my guy, Jeff (aka Tyte Jeff, aka Tyte Waff, aka Nedrick Lamar, Top Rapper). Today he is releasing his new EP TYTE JEFF. Making music has always been apart of Jeff’s life. We met at the battle of the bands way back in 1998, my band Hardnox was battling his band The Killer Bees, it was true love, you guys. Ever since then I have always known Jeff to have a guitar in his hands (sometimes that gets annoying) and a fire in his heart. When we had those (GD (J/K)) kids a lot of our personal ambitions were put on hold to make sure that those people got fed, were put to bed at a decent hour, and were well loved. Jeff has spent years working on this EP, putting bits and pieces of it together when time allowed (aka when those kids didn’t need something). Feeling an urgency to finally get this thing wrapped up, he has spent the last 18 months recording the jamz, fine tuning the mix, making a band and playing shows. Today is the day that he is finally releasing this most amazing six song EP. I think the music is rocking, man, and the lyrics are just so good. As his wife, I am so proud of what he has made, and beyond happy that my partner has such great ambition in life. You should take a sec to listen to these tytest of jamz. You can stream TYTE JEFF below via sound cloud, listen to it on spotify or download it at the itunes store. If you are local, perhaps the TYTEST way to hear the jams is to come out to the Turf Club, this Saturday April 19th in St. Paul, MN for the release show! Tyte Jeff will also be playing with the incredible Valet and The Ronnie Buxtons (ex Lifter Puller). Doors at 8PM. Hope to see some of you there! Share this...
Buddies! Tomorrow is my b-day, I will be 32 years old!!! I am one of those birthday lovers that some people might hate, sorry! I totally love my birthday, and I’m not going to shut up about it, this by far is my favorite day of the whole year! I’ve put together a birthday dream wishlist, these are all the items I have had my birthday-loving-little-heart set on. Being a winter-birthday-lady I have to put some practical things on there too, like boots and a coat, but that doesn’t mean I’m any less excited about it. Guys, I’m so excited! 1 VEA EARRINGS from Tiro Tiro These bad boys were on my bday wishlist last year too, that’s when you know you really love something. When you’ve admired it for over a year. I’m one of those types that finds a pair of earring and wears them into the ground, I would love for these to be my daily pair. 2 DKNY Coat I’m in desperate need of a new winter coat. I have about a three year limit before I need a new coat, and this year is that year for me. I love the winter, but I hate the cold. I don’t mess around with cute light-weight coats, I go straight for the warm down stuff, it’s the only way. I’m looking for something in black this year, and have my eyes on this little fluffer over at Macy’s. 3 Mae Engelgeer Ish Blanket This Merino wool woven blanket is my latest crush for the home, I can’t resist that neon orange stripe, and I think it would look perfect on my sofa. I’d accept it as a bday gift, fo sho. 4 Kelly Lamb Geo Hanger Uh, you know where I’d hang this amazing geo planter? In my new kitchen, and it would look awesome. A little in love with this one, you guys. 5 Wind and Willow Home Salad Bowl Set My good old teak salad bowl went through the dishwasher the other day, (cue sad trombone soundz). I’m going to need another one, and I’ve been crushing on everything from Wind and Willow Home forever. I’d take a set of dipped salad bowls, no prob. 6 Sorel Boot – Joan of Arctic New boots are high on the priority list, I don’t even think they should be technically counted as a potential bday prezent, but […]

Hey guys! Just had to share this quick, cool thing with you. My old man, Mr. Jeff Allen (aka Tyte Jeff) has been working on writing and recording some cool songs over the last year. Jeff had spent 10 years in an indie rock band, that had some local and national success called, The Plastic Constellations. After a five year hiatus he just couldn’t stand to not making songs anymore. At the beginning of last year he made it his goal to get six songs recorded, which he did! Now, he’s starting to play shows, and will be releasing an awesome EP in January. I’m super proud of him because recording an album with two kids, and a very full time job, takes a lot of dedication, plus the new jamz sound awesome. Anyways, he’s got a band together with some tyte bros, called Tyte Jeff and their first show is tonight! I made him a tyte website for his tyte band, you can check out his new song “Loose Crowns” over there. And if any of you local dudez/ettez are interested, he’s playing two sets tonight at the Terminal bar, yes, the Terminal bar, first show starts at 9. Share this...
So this post is a little off the usual topics around here, but I couldn’t resist writing about it. Last weekend we watched the documentary “Salinger.” How I made it not knowing this doc existed is mind blowing to me, but it does. Like many people, Catcher in the Rye changed my life when read it at the age of 12. Since then I have been a devoted fan, and follower of J.D. Salinger – and have always kept tabs on his life and his admirable craziness. I’m one of the nutzo readers that owns multiple copies of all of Salinger’s books – all chalked full of underlined text. I try and reread them whenever I get a chance to actually read. “Well. you know the ducks that swim around it? In the springtime and all? Do you happen to know where they go in the wintertime, by any chance?” The first time I read Catcher in the Rye I identified with it in such an incredible way, no book has come close to effecting me, and my life so profoundly. Just like so many other readers of Salinger, I feel a connection to Holden Caulfield. To me, I felt like I was the girl version of Caulfield. When everything was feeling insane and my teenage life was feeling out of control, I could relate to Caulfield, he was the exact manifestation of what I wanted to be in that moment (so incredibly cheesy and cliche I know, but so true, I suck). I carried my first copy of Catcher in the Rye with me everywhere, even in college, I could always find it floating around my back pack. If I traveled, I would throw it in my suitcase – just in case I needed to call on my old friend Holden. I’ve used the same bookmark, a lucky one dollar silver certificate, since the first time I read it, and I love how beat to hell the cover is. It’s probably one of my top three favorite objects of all time. If you are not familiar with J.D. Salinger, the story goes like this: In 1952, after The Catcher in the Rye grew to fame, J.D. Salinger moved to Cornish, New Hampshire, where he lived and wrote at his compound, rarely making contact with the public. He wrote and published three more books after moving to Cornish, and then […]

Click to enlarge! It totally made my day earlier this week to open up my inbox and see an email waiting for me from my friend Breanna, who just so happens to be a neighbor too. She is an internet history detective and had made some recent census discoveries while surfing ancestry.com. I’ve let her know before that I am very curious about my house, I myself have tried to dig through public 1940’s census data online to see if I could find any info on the house, but it appears that nothing was recorded for our address that year. Since Breanna is so fancy with her ancestry.com hookup, she did some digging on my behalf. She sent me 5 census documents from 1900-1940 and 3 of them have info on the people that were living in my home almost 100 years ago! Isn’t that so exciting? I’ve already started to dig around on the internet looking for more info on these people. In the 1910 census document a family going by the name “Pillsbury” lived here (a pretty big name around these parts). I have no idea what the exact relationship to thee Pillsbury fam is, but hopefully, with that rather famous name I’ll be able to find some more info on the people who once lived here! According to our records the house was built in 1910, however, there is a date on the coal bin attached to the back of the house stamped 1907, so who knows really? The other couple (from the 1920 and 1930 census) lived here at least 10 years, can you imagine? People living in my house for much, much longer than I ever have. I love all the history that comes with an old house. All these people have experienced their life living in this same place that I live now!, isn’t that so crazy? I don’t mean to get all deep and gushy about it, but that is pretty awesome! Maybe the 1930’s newspapers that I found behind the flour bin in the kitchen earlier this week were from that family. I just want to know everything. I already like the notion that a family with two boys were the first to reside here, and I am curious to learn more! I’m thinking about signing myself up for ancestry.com to do my own unearthing. The more little clues I discover about […]
