Hello Peoples! How are you guys doing? It’s Monday, and I have a really cool project to share with you plus another awesome giveaway – you can thank my pals at Ace for that! It’s finally starting to be porch season, the weather is coming around a bit, and things are starting to feel ah-very nice (ala Borat). We’ve been hanging in our porch whenever we’re not doing the million other things that we’re always doing. I always get antsy for a project after getting back into porch life. I just can’t sit in there and relax, I look around the space trying to figure out ways to tweak it and make it better. This spring I’d been looking for a few ways to add another layer of awesomeness to it, and this months project from Ace was the perfect excuse to go for it. I got inspired by a new color palette which is a mash up of OPI nail colors in latex paint format. How did this happen you ask? Well, Clark+Kensington have been teaming up with OPI at the paint studio for the past few years bringing some of OPI‘s most iconic nail colors to DIY projects everywhere. I picked the Creative Genius palette for obvious reasons. Honestly though, I was smitten by how it was heavy on the green side. Although I love the blue, green is my fav color. Plus the color “Bubble Bath” might be my new favorite shade of pink. I was happy to focus a project around this perfectly porch-suited (and summery) color palette. I knew that the porch was lacking in lushness and I figured what better way to get some green up in this light filled space then some modern beaded macrame-ish hanging planters. I did something very similar in my kitchen last year and I figured I could apply the same ideas, but with more color (and beads) for the porch. We don’t have tons of surface space for planters in our porch – utilizing vertical space with hanging planters is the way to go, plus it helps to create a bit of privacy from our neighbors porch. So how does one make a planter you ask? Don’t worry budz, I will tell you so you will know the secrets too. I could sense that you were a little worried about that, so let me just put your mind […]

Sometimes one of your best budz might be getting married, and you might be invited to a sexy bachelorette party, and because talking about underwear in public in front of strangers sometimes makes you shy, you might decide to just make lingerie out of beer boxes, because honestly, it would just be much funnier. It took me a few days to assemble this strange woven masterpiece, but it was totally worth it. It was funny – and she loved it, so we all win. Not my first time avoiding public embarrassment at a lingerie party – a few years ago I crocheted these things – I guess I have issues. Long story very short. One of my favorite pals to drink beer and make very funny jokes with, is getting married to one of my oldest (as in way back, not age) and best friends this weekend. If you didn’t already know, it’s Matt and Katie – I talk about them often on the blogs, they’re the ones who live in Savannah and have the sweet family cabin that we love to spend time at. We can not wait for this blessed celebraish, we’ve been anticipating this amazing event all damn summer!

You guys, it’s that magical time of year where we can just venture outside and spray paint the heck out of anything we want. I have been marveling at the power of spray paint ever since I started using it in my kitchen makeover to make small improvements with hardware. It’s amazing stuff. I’ve been eagerly waiting for the opportunity to get outside and spray paint a few things, and it finally happened this week! We had a couple of days with temperatures in the 40’s! Planters and pots can be expensive – lots of times as expensive as the plant if not more. Clay pots however are very inexpensive, usually they are less than $4 for a pot and tray depending on what size you get. I’m no newbie to spray painting clay pots, I’ve painted a few in matte black this fall, and so far the results are all positive. There has been no unexpected blistering from moisture or anything like that, so I figured I’d give it go and give these pots a dipped look. I masked off the tops of the pots and spray painted the trays and bases. It was super easy. I applied two coats of paint. I also painted this cheap-o lamp I picked up at Target earlier this month. It’s not bad in the enamel grey, but I thought it would look way better in satin white, so I painted that too! See! Easy! Everything is masked and painted. I didn’t use any guidelines when masking the pots, just picked a spot and taped around the top. I didn’t even care if it was even! I know, I know, I am so crazy. The lamp is my fav, I love it painted white! Don’t you think it looks so much better now? So don’t just sit there. Go get your spray painting on, the weather is perfect for it!

Finn and I spent the afternoon yesterday making Valentines for his classmates. This is our second year of really going all-out with the Valentine’s Day crafts. This is strange for me for two reasons; one I normally don’t do a lot of crafty projects, and two we aren’t super into Valentine’s day at our house. Finn however really enjoys taking the time to make a gift for his buddies, and I really enjoying helping him come up with cool ideas for his Valentines that he and I can do together. This year we made these cute little candy pouches decorating them with hearts that we printed using our homemade potato stamps and sewing them up on the ends to seal them off. The whole project was pretty easy, we did it assembly-line-style. We started with printing, then took a lunch break while we waited for them to dry. Later on we finished the project by filling the pouches with goodies and sewing up the ends. The hardest part was getting the momentum to actually go dig my sewing machine out of storage – this is me trying to tell you that it was an easy project and I loved spending time with Finn making something together. Have you ever made potato stamps? They are really fun and easy to do. All you need is a potato a knife and a little paint or ink. This is something an adult would have to help with of course. You don’t need fancy knife skills either. Start by tracing your pattern, in this case a heart, you could easily cut out XOXO or arrows too, but I was just keeping it simple. Make sure your potato stamp has at least a 1/4″ relief, if you can swing it, I would shoot for a 1/2″. The more raised the stamp is, the clearer the print. This is my second time making potato stamps, the first time I attempted it was on Finn’s first birthday when I was making flags for his cupcakes. We used my favorite hot pink acrylic paint. I’ve used this same paint in the past for dipping the legs of our bed side table and for the West Elm DIY I participated with last spring. I buy this paint at the local Ace hardware store, but it’s not so easy to find online, it’s called “Homefront Neon Pink” paint. If you […]

This weekend we celebrated Jeff’s 32nd b-day, he’s such an old man now! The weekend before I attended a baby shower for my cousin, and for both events I wrapped my gifts the same way, with white paper and black and white baker’s twine. I know this isn’t reinventing the wheel or anything, but I really like wrapping gifts this way because it looks sweet and thoughtful, and most importantly, it’s really easy. I always have a roll of Ikea drawing paper from the kids section meant for use with their easels. I use it all the time, currently it’s my jam for keeping my workspace clean while painting the kitchen cupboards. I also use it for background sweeps when I am taking pics for the blog, I use it for present wrapping, (obviously) and yes, sometimes the kids actually use it for drawing. I would highly recommend grabbing a roll next time you take a trip to your local Ikea. Rollover the Image above I like to add some hot pink washi tape too, just to be cool.

Hey Guys, I wanted to share with you this quick, easy and cool invitation that Finn and I made last week for his birthday party. This invitation is cool for a few reasons, for one it looks awesome. Secondly it’s pretty easy, and requires little to no artistic skill. It is quickly made with a straight edge ruler, and it doesn’t take a lot of time, or cost a lot of money. Do you remember making graphs like this in elementary school and connecting the marks? Does this thing even have a name? Help a lady out here if you know! Finn and I used an A2 size note card. We found the center of the card and then made a horizontal and vertical line. Too make this pattern work make sure to grid out an odd number of marks. In this example we did 17 vertical marks and 17 horizontal. The 9th mark was the center mark both vertically and horizontally leaving 8 marks in every direction from the center outward. We marked out the grid using a distance of a 1/4 of an inch per dash and then began to connect the marks. The method is easy. Draw a line from the furthest out vertical mark to the most inner horizontal mark. Keep repeating this going to the next farthest and inner mark every time. Change colors for every new layer of marks and you will have this cool diamond weave effect!

I don’t know about you, but we’ve been working hard on our Valentine’s over at Casa La Allen. It is Finn’s 1st official V-Day at school this year and he is responsible for bringing a Valentine (or as I like to say “Valentimes”) for each one of his classmates. Making Valentines involves a lot of stress and excitement for Finn, because he’s a ball of anxiety just like his mom. He was desperate to learn exactly how we were going to make Valentines for all his buddies having never done it before. Not to worry little man, mom’s got you covered. We have a decent amount of craft and art supplies around our house, and all I knew was that we were going to make these things ourselves, obviously. Finn’s has a limited attention span when it comes to arts and crafts and I wanted him to feel like he contributed to each one of these Valentine’s. So I thought of the easiest thing I could possibly think of; painting coffee filters with water colors. It’s hard to screw this up (even if your 4) and it has a pretty cool tie dyed effect. Gus was even able to help his bro out and we had 20 filters painted and set to dry within half an hour. Last night we headed over to the craft store for some small bags and some goodies for his classmates including some super cute heart erasers. Today we are addressing and filling bags, and mom is helping punch holes, cutting hearts and tying them on with bakers twine. We’re a pretty efficient little machine. I’m not super good at these sorts of things so please let me know if I am missing any vital information. In the below vid you will see the looping method that is key to weaving a macrame chair. I tried to make the pics as thorough as possible so you would get the trick. Video Tutorial Here are a few other vital tips. Pick up a macrame tutorial book from ebay or etsy.
Poms! Hey e’rebody! I don’t know about you but I have a TON of wonderful people in my life who have July birthdays. If you didn’t know, July is a super trendy month to have a birthday ;) I was having trouble wrapping some gifts earlier this week for Finn’s 4th birthday. Bows were in short supply so I decided to whip up some yarn poms and use them in place of bows. I’m loving the way they turned out. I’ve been totally crushing on the poms my friend Crystal makes for ALL Knitwear hats. Her poms are super cute, so cute that they have infiltrated my brain. I luvre them. So, when I was trying to wrap presents on the fly with kraft paper (aka brown paper bags) I went straight for the yarn bag to try and spiff it up a bit and ended up with these cute pom bows. In case you don’t know how to make a pom, I thought I’d share a quick tutorial with you. Now you can liven up your July bday gifts too. Trace and cut out two donuts I mashed together a few different tutorials but took the most from a tutorial over at prudent baby. First things first, to make a pom you need to cut out two donut rings from cardboard. Being that I suck at drawing circles free hand and I don’t have a compass I traced the bottom of an Ikea glass for the outer ring and a 1 inch button for the inner. YOU DO NOT need to be exact, so don’t stress if it’s not perfect. Begin wrapping Yarn Once you get your two donut shapes put them together side by side and start wrapping a piece of colorful yarn (approximately three feet in length). I work the poms in three foot sections of yarn because any longer than that and it gets difficult. Plus this way you can incorporate a lot of different colors. P.S. you don’t need to tie a knot or anything like that either. I just held the loose end with my left hand and wrapped with my right. Wrap one or more colors Above you can see the I wrapped a first round in orange and then overlapped it with a second color in blue. Feel free to do many layers, the more layers the […]

Hey-O Happy Freitag (that’s German for Friday) everybody. Guess what I am doing right now? Sitting in the waiting room of a hospital while Jeff gets a knee surgery for a torn Meniscus. We’re calling him “Young Menisc” from now on. He totally injured himself a few weeks back when Joel and Katrina were in town. I guess casually drinking beers in the backyard can result in knee surgery a month later, so be warned. Anyway, I’d like to share with you my new favorite craft project: macrame lawn furniture. This combines two of my favorite things; sitting on chairs in the backyard and craft projects, so you can see why I was drawn to it. It really all started a long time ago. My Grandpa’s craft was making macrame chairs out of colorful cord and discarded aluminum frames. He actually gave us two of the chairs as our wedding present, a totally sweet gift. We use them all the time and totally love the crazy patterns. My Grandpa has since passed away but his chairs remind me of him every time we get them out :) My Grandpa’s patterns are a bit more serious than mine, or at least his colors are. He was a big fan of dusty blues and white cord with brown speckles. I saw this project as an opportunity to get bold with my colors. I ordered up some old (aka vintage) macrame books on ebay and followed the instructions. Meanwhile my friend Roonz was given strict instructions to collect aluminum chairs for me at garage sales (she’s a serious garage sale nut). It took a little bit to get a groove for how this all works. There’s not really any youtube videos to help me with this project. I guess making in depth instructional videos on how to make chairs for old people aren’t hot at the moment. The technical instructions provided in the books are not clear either. I kind of had to figure it out on my own. Using my crochet skillz I was able to figure out the method after about an hour. I finished the whole chair in one afternoon kid-nap sesh. I have two more frames waiting in the wings. I’m thinking I might end the summer with way too much lawn furniture. Update: New better macrame chair instructions over here.

So, I couldn’t resist making Beak & Cam’s baby an afghan, just like the sunburst blanket I made for Elsa when she was borned. Believe me, I tried to resist, I knew it was going to take a lot of time and I probably should’ve started back in the cold days of winter. It’s totally my duty to bestow blankets on all the cool babies of the world. I couldn’t let Cam’s baby girl not have some sunburst lovin’ too, so here we go! You probably wouldn’t have guessed it but my first post ever on the blog was about the granny square afghan I made for Elsa, and to this day it is the most popular post on the blog, crazy huh? I guess I got some good SEO vibes on that one. Anyway, since I always get tons of questions on it, and since I can’t remember all the details, I thought I’d get more into for this version of the Granny square. For all you crochet nerds out there. My pattern is 90% based off the one seen here by priscillascrochet.net but in the fourth round I double crochet in each crochet from the 3rd round. In the corners I do 3 DBC followed by 3 chain stitches and then another 3 DBC. That’s the trick to getting the diamond patterns in the corners when you join it all together. I’m totally trying something new this time; last time I went for the Cascade 220 yard, but this time I went for the super soft baby yarn, so far so good. I’m using the Loops & Threads Snuggly Wuggly baby sport in White, Soft Yellow, Cool Baby, Candy Pink and Soft Mint. All colors to match the baby’s nursery. I’ll be doing another update as I get further along to go over joining and then I will end with the scalloped border. My goal is to do a square a day, I need 35 squares so that gives me a month, give or take to finish the project. Now we just need to keep that little baby girl cooking while I finish up this blankie.

Me and the kid folk made Easter Eggs yesterday. “Wahoo!” as Finn would say. For me, it was more stressful than fun. After the kids quickly spilt two dye cups I was about to lose my mind. But, it happens, and I tried to stay cool. We did try some awesome new techniques this year including tie dye and masking off patterns. Martha has about 101 different ways to dye eggs on her site, and I also found a cool resource via Small for Big. You should check them out if you haven’t got your Easter egg on yet. Anybody else know of any super cool egg dying techniques or, better yet, amazing deviled egg recipes? I’m not super huge on Easter, but decorating eggs is pretty fun. Finn asked about hiding the eggs this year because he had remembered searching for them last year. I started going on about how the Easter bunny was going to come and hide them, but he just looked at me all confused. I couldn’t go on with the ridiculous story anymore it so I just told him: “Actually Dad and I just hide them. It’s a fun game. It’s like hide and seek but with eggs.” I’ll never give up Santa but I guess I can’t pull off the Easter bunny. CREDIT ◊◊ Photo template from Pugly Pixel

After helping my mom hang decorations on her Christmas tree last weekend, I realized how almost every year growing up we made a handmade ornament, whether it were at school, Sunday school, or at home with Mom. Inspired by a sparkly pinecone I created as a little runt, I made a late night trip to the drug store on Monday night to stock up on glue and glitter. Finn concentrates on his ornament skills. Our final product, ornaments for each kid plus some to use as gifts for Moms, Dads, Grandmas & Grandpas. The project itself was super easy, but keeping the glitter on the pinecones was a little harder. I recommend using a large Gladware or Ziploc container to sprinkle your glitter in, a paper bowl to roll your glue in and paper plates to rest your final product.

I just received the sweetest little package in the mail today… I ordered some baker’s twine about a week ago from a place called The Twinery. Colz and I had been brainstorming ways to package our new wares. We set our focus on giving our customers the experience of opening the perfect little parcel complete with vintagesque kraft paper and baker’s twine. The perfect compliment to our handmade stationery. I have to say, I was excited about the purchase but was smitten with the lovliness of the twine when I opened up the package to see eight candy colored shades with names like “peapod”, and “pink sorbet.” I couldn’t resist modeling them on some of the notecards, there’s no doubt, this twine makes it.
In honor of Jeff and I buying our first house tomorrow—AND in honor of this awesome time of year called “spring”—I decided to do a post inspired by spring. I may be jumping the gun a little bit but I don’t care. I planted some seeds, oh yes I did. I am so confident that summer is on its way that I am forcing the greenery along. My new backyard will be green with plants. So I pushed some moving boxes aside, found my bag of dirt and cracked open some eggs. Eggs are a good medium for planting seeds in because they are biodegradable. All you have to do is plant the seedlings with the egg in your flower pot or garden. Plus these eggs looks super adorable, they would make great gifts for the green thumb in your life (Colz and 50’s: you should be prepared to receive some special herbs in little egg shell pots in 14-21 days.) I followed some basic instructions that I found on the internet, and I took inspiration from Erika’s blog over at www.foxandowl.com. Erika had planted some seeds in eggs last April and ever since I saw her do it I knew I would have to do the same this year. This is what you’re gonna need:Seeds (I used some basic herbs)DirtEggs Step one seems kind of crazy: you need to cut the tops off of some eggs. Seriously, I know it sounds weird but if you just take a pair of scissors you can gently cut the top of an egg right off. Then you dump out the yolk (or make scrambled eggs) and wash out the inside with water. After you get all your eggs emptied out, you will want to poke a hole in the bottoms for drainage. I poked multiple holes in the bottom of my egg shells using a standard darning needle. Now with your eggs all clean and emptied out you’re going to want to write the name of the seed on your egg. This way you can keep it all straight. Note: it is very hard to write script on an oval egg. Results may vary. Now for the obvious stuff: you’ve got to add dirt to your egg shell. On the websites I looked at they were talking about using a special seeding dirt, but I didn’t have that so I just used […]

I grabbed my sewing machine from my mom’s house on Tuesday night after picking up Finn for the day, where it had been sitting for the last few years. I tried to use it one time like five years ago and became overwhelmed by the bobbin, so I gave up. Now here I am five years later trying to figure out how to use this damn thing, and I haven’t actually successfully sewn anything since I was 10 years old. So, I sit down with my instruction manual and learn how to conquer that dumb bobbin and voila. Check it! I make this little knitting needle case for all of my sticks.. I’ve realized that sewing and sewing machines aren’t as scary as thought. But they do require a lot of thinking. First you have to figure out what you want to create, then if you’re not using a pattern you need to deconstruct the object, and then lastly you need to figure out how you’re going to put it all together and “make it work.” (BTW Proj-Run, tonight!) Plus there is the whole technical side of it, which I’m not even close to having a grasp on. My seams are only a little crooked. That’s good right? Inside the case are compartments for my double-sided needles, my regular needles, my crochet hooks and my circular needles. The flap on top helps to hold all my needles in place so they’re not flying all over. In other news, LOST starts on tuesday. I will kill someone if the last episode ends with them landing safely at LAX.
