Holy buckets! This post has been a long time in the making, and I'm so glad it's time to finally share with you! If you've been following for awhile you know that I have been wrestling with my stairwell design, but not just wrestling in the winning sort-of-away, but the kind where you're on the losing side and you're pinned down in a choke hold on the verge of blacking out. It was almost a TKO, but I came back with a dropkick pile driver combo and was declared the winner. ..

Hey-O Guys! You won't even believe when I originally started working on this post! It has been nearly 3 months! It's been weighing on me too, I often sit down to work on this post, and I just don't feel right about it so I put it away. The problem with the post was not having to write it, but the actual design process. If you take anything from this, please let it be that slow design is good, and you don't have to always have all the answers (even though having all the answers usually rules)...

Now that the entryway is beginning to have a definite vibe, I was ready to pick out artwork. That was the easy the part, figuring out how to hang it has been way more challenging. I feel like I’ve gone on and on about how stumped I have been about this space, and I’m gonna keep going on about it, but the entryway as a space, is not conducive to any sort of cohesive design. This space has paralyzed me for six years — like I pretended the entryway didn’t exist, and that no one ever could see it, even though it was the first thing people would notice when entering our home. Then recently, I received a vision and now my entryway is actually looking kinda pulled together and nice. That is until this whole artwork hanging thing. I hope you don’t hate that I am updating you with every little step along the way with this makeover, but it’s how I do. I know sometimes I like seeing the little steps in order to get a sense of the big picture and how it all comes together, and I hope you do too. That brings me to artwork. I knew for sure that I was going to be getting this artwork from Minted. My pal Cam has this print in her house and I die over it every time I see it. Although it looks like an illustration it’s actually a photograph of a crystal (aka mineral) taken by Chicago duo, Baumbirdy. They have a sister print that goes along with it too, and I almost went for it and bought both, but the colors just weren’t doing it for me. So where do I hang this gem? Damned if I know. Everything about the entryway is odd; the stairs, the bench, the piano window and the wall space. I could never figure out what it was that I should naturally be doing with the space. Do I hang multiple pieces of art, or just one, and should I go big or small, and should I center it on the horizontal alignment of the window even though it’s kind of absurdly high, or not. Holy balls, it has been killing me! So I made a decision. I purchased one piece of 16″x16″ art with a copper frame, and I hung it right up there next to the window. I am in desperate need of a medium sized rug for the front entryway. I’ve been looking for a solid two months now and have found a bunch of potential contenders, but every time I think I’ve found “the one” I find an even better rug somewhere else. The space needs a rug mostly for practical reasons. We need a spot for boots and shoes to go when we’re having folks over during the winter months, so it needs to be durable. It also needs to be cute, because it will help to unify the space (aka tie that shit together). Anyways, right now I have heart eyes for number 5, but a week ago it was 16, and a little before that it was 9. You get the picture. Hopefully something will just feel right soon, and hopefully that will happen the same time as some sort of amazing sale. I’ll keep my fingers crossed. Share this...
Hey budz. The entryway progress continues slowly but surely! Our house has a lot of good things going for it, but one of the things it doesn’t have is a coat closet. Instead it has this really large (in proportion to our house) entryway that doesn’t serve a whole lot of purpose. It basically consists of our stair case, a weird wall cut in half diagonally by the stairs, a bay of piano windows, and a bench seat that covers a radiator. These reasons are why it has taken me six years to come up with a viable plan for the space. In the winter time us Allens rarely use the front entry, we park the cars in the garage and we exit and enter only through the back door. We use our back mudroom to hang our coats, and we stowaway our boots in our shoe cabinet. When our friends and fam come to visit it’s a different story. They enter through the front door, and have nowhere to hang there coats. When this happens, the radiator/bench wears two hats, functioning as a coat collector and jacket warmer. Hooks were long over due, it was time to install some! My pals need a place to hang there shit. I need my entryway to not be a disheveled chaotic jacket den all winter long. Of course this is something that I could have done forever ago, but because of this whole lack of a vision for the space thing, I never felt like it was worth doing. Now I’ve got a plan, and a new affinity for wood dowels, copper and leather. Put it all together and you get a wood and leather dowel coat hook with copper accents. Seems logical. Here’s how you can do it too: Supplies 12″ leather strap 3/16″, 3″Dowel Screw #10 Triple Grip anchor 3/4″ copper tube cap 4 ½ of 7/8″ wide dowel Screw & Dowel Using a 1/8″ drill bit make a hole in the center of the dowel approximately 1 ½” deep. Insert one end of the dowel screw into the wood dowel. Use a pliers to help sink the screw. Stop when you’ve reached half way. Using a 1/8″ drill bit, pre-drill holes in the top and bottom of the leather (about a ½ from each end) Anchors Away In the wall, drill holes for the anchors using a 5/8″ bit.
Hey Guys! Hope all is well with yas. I’ve been doing a little webhost rearranging over here, and haven’t had access to the site for the last few days. I’d appreciate it if you could please let me know (in the comments) if you notice any weird hiccups with the site. Thanks in advance on that one :) Okay fools, so I’ve initiated phase two of my DIY craziness. Believe it or not, I’m not a big fan of DIY when it comes to home decor. I should rephrase that, I like it when it’s done well, which I think is rarely seen on the old interwebs – I’m talking to you pinterest – and therefore most of the time it makes me wanna barf. So now I’m kind of putting myself out there, but I’ve been feeling like I’ve come up with some worthy DIY pro-jez. So when I had my celestial vision of the entryway design a few weeks ago, there were parts that I needed to incorporate (like the mirror) and a mid-century style planter (that cost more money than I had to spend). Because the vision required these elements I had to come up with a better, smarter, easier, CHEAPER way of achieving them. I already shared the mirror with you guys last week, and today I’m gonna show you how I made my DIY version of a mid century (turned minimalist) plant stand for merely 17 bucks. You be the judge of how crafty vs cool it is. This was a pretty easy build. Besides the dowel and copper pipe fittings all you need is some all purpose glue (I used Liquid Nails) and a saw (a hand saw would work fine). For my planter I used this tall matte black planter from Ikea – which I love. It even comes in different silhouettes, and I will be purchasing all of them to satiate my plant addiction. Anyways, you would want to change the the length of the second set of four dowels (marked here as the 2″ size) if you were to use a different planter. You’ll want to take the 8 – 1 1/8″ dowels, the 4 elbows and 4 Tees to make the square base. Use a q-tip to apply the glue to the inside of the pipe fittings. After completing the square attach the 4 – 2″ dowels to the 4 […]

Guys, Who am I? Two posts in one day? FTW! Like I said, I’ve been brimming with ideas for the house. The first was to customize this round mirror from Ikea. Unlike so many other mirrors the Skogsvåg mirror from Ikea was the perfect size for my small space. At 18″ wide it fit this odd shape created by our staircase just perfectly. Plus the frame of the mirror is made from wood so it makes it easy to modify, unlike some of it’s metal framed counterparts. Also, did I mention the price, $39.99 – a deal as far as mirrors go. My go-to copper metallic spray paint is from Rustoleum, it does an amazing job of actually looking like copper, and I feel completely confident that when I use it, shit will look cool. I kinda went a little nuts and spray painted the buttons on my twemco flip clock too, oops. I’ve been pinning and pining for a round mirror for my house for a long time, I just couldn’t find one that was exactly what I was looking for, and for the price I wanted to pay. After searching around for a bit I found this pretty natural leather strapping, and bought a bunch of it (I have a few other ideas in mind for this as well). The leather is 1 1/2″ wide and sits perfectly flush against the sides of the mirror. And since the mirror is made of wood, it was easy to tack on using upholstery nails. More details on the mirror assembly below. I invested in a gaggle of pillows for our entry bench (aka radiator cover / built-in bench). You can see a peak of them in the above pic, and I’ll be sure to share more later. They have made the space! Below are the links to the cushions spotted above :) +++ sources +++ Blush Pillow | Navy Chevron | Sailors | Graphic B&W +++ sources +++ 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 1 Spray Paint The Mirror Tape off the mirror with painters tape – I used thin sheets of newsprint from the telephone book to mask as well as the tape.
So this “spring thing” isn’t happening here in Minnesota, it’s sad to say at the very least. Today we are seeing our first sunny day in over a week, and the temp is still hovering around 40º. The weather reports say that maybe by the end of next week we might see 50º, still 10º less than the average temp for this time of year. Oh and everything is still covered in snow, something I don’t think I’ve ever seen happen in MN in April. I don’t doubt the crumby weather is what inspired me to purchase this rug from Marrakech, Morocco about 2 weeks ago. I saw it on ebay during one of my internet window shopping binges (aka pretend shopping). I wasn’t looking for it, but once I spotted it I knew it would be perfect for the entry way. I am desperate for color and sunlight and green right now, and there was something about this rug that satisfied a small bit of my insatiable spring yearning. I had been on the lookout for a long and narrow rug for the entry way for awhile. I considered getting something blue, and then I considered getting something patterned. Nothing was feeling right. I was also waiting to see how the new shag rug looked in the living room and my first priority in entry way rug shopping was to find something to compliment it. Within days of first seeing this Boucherouite rug on ebay, Victoria posted about her new “rag rugs” and that is all it took to push me over the edge. I was sold and in love. Boucherouite rugs are made by Berbere women with pieces of mostly cotton scrap, but also can include wool and nylon scraps too thus resulting in the tag “rag rug”. Each is unique and most are vibrant and colorful. They are created without predetermined patterns resulting in abstract movements and amazingly wonderful patterns. There are so many beautiful Boucherouite rugs out there, seriously, tons of them. For me, they were on the more expensive side of what I wanted to spend, but I was able to find my rug for a steal (just another reason it felt right). From what I saw during my research online; the price seems to depend on size, color, and pattern. The nicer, more expensive rugs have beautiful patterns and vibrant colors. Mine is probably […]

Woohoo, I am making progress on this to-do list, more on the boring stuff later this week. For now, I am basking in the glory of finally adding something nice to our entry way area, this new Nelson Bubble Lamp. Remember a few weeks ago how I told you that after cleaning out the basement project area I decided to sell my letterpress? Well this is what I bought with that money, and man, this light fixture is way better than an old letterpress collecting dust in my basement. Psst, I also bought that Bookhou bag with the triangle print (in the lower right hand corner) with my fast cash too. If you remember, I was thinking about getting a Random Light for this space. After taking the time to really consider that option I realized that it was too expensive, and the size of even the small light would probably be too big. My husband is 6’4″ and we needed something that would give his big nordic head some clearance. The lamp arrived yesterday afternoon, I had ordered it the previous week from Modernica who was, and still is having a 15% off sale (plus free shipping) on bubble lamps. As soon as I laid eyes on it, I knew it was going up that night (aka last night). I couldn’t live with the old victorian entry fixture any longer. It didn’t take long to discover that I had my work cut out for me, I figured there would probably be knob and tube wiring but I wasn’t anticipating the old metal gas pipe (used for lighting old gas light fixtures). There is nothing worse that committing yourself to a project, only to realize that the project is going to be a major pain. When we replaced the dining room fixture a few years ago we discovered a metal gas pipe there too. In that case we had to use a sawzall to remove the pipe and had to take out a good chunk of the ceiling to do so. In that instance our light fixture fitting was wide enough to cover up the gaping hole in our ceiling but this time that wouldn’t be the case. I had intended to add an electric box to the ceiling and make everything a little bit safer but with that protruding pipe there was just no room. So I did the […]

So I’ve been giving the entry-way-re-do a lot of thought throughout the last 2 days. I’ve really appreciate the comments and feedback you guys have given me since posting about my dilemma earlier this week. Christine made the suggestion that I should think about laying down a runner instead of a standard rug. I don’t know why but this never occurred to me. I had considered rugs for the space but wasn’t sold on the idea of a rug covering so much of the flooring. A 5×7 would fill the entire space from the bench seat to the stairs, and that would just look weird. On the other hand a 2.5′ x 7′ runner might be the perfect size. I like this suggestion. I found a blue (surprise) ombre runner that I really like in the west elm catalog. I’m not sure if this is exactly what I will end up with, but something similar in size and style will be on my floor! I need minimal pattern and a little bit of blue. The rug in the living room already has enough pattern for the whole main floor. My biggest problem in the entry way is that long window near the stairs. I obviously couldn’t hang curtains on it because one side of the window is set above the staircase. My attempt of adding fabric pennant bunting was cute, but not a long term solut-sch. The window is pretty, and there is a simple leaded glass pattern that runs through out it, but it so bare. I’ve had a serious crush on Fiddle Leaf Fig trees forever now, and I think the corner of the entry might be the perfect place for one. (Isn’t that convenient??) As the tree grew it would work as a natural window covering. I think I seriously might be on to something here. Not only that, but I am dying for more green in my house… you know these dark winter months are getting me down. This big weird window causes another problem. There is NO where to hang artwork! Anything hung under it would look strange, and next to it would look like you were lining too many things up horizontally (believe me, I already tried this). Instead, I was considering adding three Ribba ledges (from Ikea) and aligning them vertically in the corner near the long window. I can lean artwork on […]

Do you have that one space in your house that has never really changed since you’ve moved in?, cause I do! Our entry way is beyond blah, and we’ve barely touched it since buying our house because… I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO WITH IT!! We moved in (March 2010) and since then we’ve painted, added a desk, tossed a ridiculous (and super ugly) oversized pillow on the radiator/built-in-bench, and hung bunting over the long, weird window. Overall it’s not completely horrible, but its’ not great either. I’m just so afraid of it! I have no clue how to approach that long, horizontal window on the north wall; do I leave it naked?, do I keep the “bunting thingy”?, do I try and hang curtains? I have no idea! What about that bench/radiator cover built-in; do I add cushion?, would that be weird?, maybe just a bunch of pillows?, or nothing at all? I seriously have no clue! What about that sconce, it’s original to the house but looks really sad and old and is only hanging on by a thread; do I buy something new?, do I go chandelier?, super modern?, minimalist?? I just don’t know! Henceforth I am committing myself to coming up with a “vision” for this weird space and sticking to it. The deadline: Summer! By this time Juneish I will no longer have an entry way that is non-functional and non-prettyful. It will be rad and cool and something I can be proud of. You hear entry way, you’ve been warned! Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter
