Hey-O! I’m back, fine people of the internet! Hope you have all had an amazing wonderful summer. We sure a nice one. School started yesterday, and I’m excited to get back to a more regular schedule of projects, taking photographs and blogging. I have to admit, I’m a little overwhelmed by all the possibilities of what to do next that I just had to decide on one thing and JUST DO IT. I have managed to work on projects this summer and take some photographs, it’s the whole blogging thing that I didn’t seem to have the time or space to focus on. Now I’m playing catch up and want to get you all up to speed on what’s been going on...

Oh woah, it’s nearly August already? I forget that having two kids with July birthday’s really makes the month fly by.

I’ve been working on a lot of little things this summer, each of them taking up a day here and there, sometimes it’s hard to tell if I’m really making progress at all. I was really hoping by now that I’d be able to share photos of the new exterior paint on the cabin. It’s been a bummer that it hasn’t gotten done yet. I had high hopes that I would get time to enjoy the cabin’s new look the majority of the summer...

Guys. As it always seems to happen, it’s mid-December and the boys and I have come down with somer sort of nasty cold where all you can do all day is lay in bed, and no one is around to take out the garbage out for you or bring you Ludens. It was bound to happen, and if it had to happen, I’m glad that it’s happening this week and not over our Christmas break. I’m a little late on sharing the wintery exterior of my house this year. I braved the freezing temps and went outside to snap some pics so you guys would all know that I’m still here, and not stop reading my blog. My hair froze, so you’re welcome. Don’t worry, I’m back in bed now. Anywho, I think my delay in filling the boxes this year had a lot to do with the warm November (aka ‘Global Warming’, ever heard of it?), it just never felt right to deck out the boxes when it was still 50º outside. The kids and I didn’t get around to actually trimming out the window boxes until right before Thanksgiving – I like to usually have them in by mid-Novemenber. I am boring, and everything about the boxes is basically the same formula I always use. I am v much stuck in my ways. I like green and white and that’s all I need to make me happy. For these boxes I used a combination of spruce tips, cedar boughs, oregonia, cotton stems, pinecones, birch branches, and a few white faux berries that I’ve slowly acquired over the years. The one new addition this year was floral foam blocks. This is the same stuff you might find in fancy bouquets that you get from not the grocery store. In the past I would assemble the boxes before our first hard freeze and then as it got colder out the branches would freeze into place. This all made sense in theory, but as soon as a strong wind or a spring thaw came through, my window box filling would be all over the ground. Sad. I’m sure my neighbors would laugh when they would see me out in my slippers trying to put my window boxes back together. This year I spent $36 to buy floral foam to fill my boxes. A single case of this foam will last me […]

This post has been such a long time in the making. It makes me so happy that I might fill this post with overly positive words and phrases. You guys!, six year, that’s how long it’s been since we moved into this house. Six years ago I was staring at an ugly white house decked out with lots of mint green trim, green stairs, green awnings, and no landscaping to speak of. I swallowed hard when I agreed with my Jeff that this was the best house for us. Was it my dream house? Let’s just say it had potential, I could envision a future for the interior, but the one thing I wanted more than anything was curb appeal (and gardens) and it was hard to see past the ugly. I wanted a cool Minneapolis house, not this old grandma hangout! Of course our plan was to tackle the major eye sores in the first few years – that’s how he we got each other to agree to buying the house. But then you quickly realize that everything costs tons of money, and you prioritize. I’ve wanted new front steps since the jump, I could see that it would do so much for the curb appeal of our home, but concrete is expensive. So, this is what happened instead. First summer we were broke, second summer we had a baby on the way and opted to try and repair and repaint the steps ourselves, third summer we painted the exterior, fourth summer we got a new roof cause part of ours blew off, fifth year we got a new fence, 6th year we got a new basement and here we are, the start of the seventh summer. New steps are happening! I know I talk about waiting out expensive decisions a lot. This for me, is just another example of how really stewing on something can work out. If we had these stairs replaced the first year we would’ve replaced them exactly with what was there, having 6 years to walk around the neighborhood and drool over other peoples front steps gave us (me) the time to really dream up the perfect stoop. Also, now we have a Grandmpa Rick (aka my best friend’s dad). Rick has been in the concrete business forever, and was super generous in helping us get these stairs realized. The plan was that I […]

Whazzup all you cool people? I have a sweet makeover to share with you today facilitated by my nice neighborly pals over at Ace Hardware, (thanks Ace, you da best!). Us Ace bloggers were asked to get really in depth on a project this summer, something that we were really itching to get at. I knew right away that I had to tackle my garage. I have a few good reasons for this. Firstly, the exterior of it is so boring; white vinyl siding paired with a plain white aluminum door leaves much to be desired. I’m thankful that the garage is newer and not slanting to its side like so many of those hundred year old garages around here, but it needed a facelift for sure. Secondly, the interior (which I’ll get to in a future post), is filled to the brim with tons and tons of crap – you know, all that stuff that doesn’t go anywhere else – and needs to be sorted through and organized. Here in MPLS (aka Minneapolis) most of us residents access our garages via an alley way behind our homes. Now, this is nice for many of us, it prevents our small-ish (all is relative) yards from be eaten up by driveways, sadly though, there is a down side to alley lyfe. It is not popular in my neighborhood to keep a pretty garage or alley facade. Alley ways are strictly utilitarian and are strewn with garbage cans, recycling bins, yard waste and so on. It should be noted, that I carefully cropped a temporary port-a-potty out of these pics – point is, anything goes in the alley. I didn’t want my garage to fall by the wayside like so many others and wondered what would happen to the culture of our alley if I spent some time and gave it a quick but purposeful face lift. Could I inspire other folks in the neighborhood to pretty up their alley appeal™ too? I purchased a can of paint, some painters tape, a set of faux windows, and some decorative hardware, and guess what? The garage looks way better! Now, this isn’t my dream garage, and I know it looks a little fake-y, but when you’re putting lipstick on a pig, isn’t the lipstick better than just the ugly old pig? I think the answer is “heck yeah it is”. Of course I […]

Hey guys! We’ve moved into our 5 years ago this month! That’s the longest I’ve ever lived in one place since moving out of my folks’ place – head’s up – that was 15 years ago! We love this house so much, like the most! We’ll be staying here for the long haul. We’ve/I’ve been busy the last few years really trying to make this house our own. I believe that making a home is one of those things that really happens over time, in layers. I couldn’t imagine making it all happen overnight like it does on TV. I don’t have the money, or natural instinct to do that. I’ve spent the good part of a week working on a full house tour to share with you guys, which includes lots of pictures and some Before & Afters. More than anything it’s an excuse to pat myself on the back and remind myself how very awesome I am (I kid), but honestly, I do feel really proud of what this place has become. I know it will continue to change throughout our time here, and I think that’s what makes it ours. So let me show you around. This is our master bedroom, if you’ve been following along you probably already know that it’s the most recent big project I’ve taken on. Not only did I have fun making it look pretty but I had even more fun doing all the hard stuff, like repairing the plaster walls and floor, searching for trim and baseboard replacements at our local salvage center, wallpapering and building custom shelving. That’s the stuff I really like to do, and I’m excited that there will be more of it in my future with the pending basement remodel. We’ve never had a real grown up bedroom with a real bed frame and nightstands. This is big time for us! We’re really, really happy with how the space turned out, especially now that both the sunroom and the bedroom feel like the same space. It cliché for me to say, but the space is really peaceful now, and I love spending lazy times in bed. The only thing that could possibly make it any better would involve my kids learning how to sleep in on the weekends. The master bedroom makeover all started with the sunroom revamp last spring. The sunroom (aka sun porch, aka four-season-porch, […]

What up pals? It’s winter now so you should make your house pretty on the outside. Every year I get a little better at this winter decorating thing. It takes some practice, but once you figure it out it’s fun and easy. Imma tell you a few things about what I know, cause this is a blog about house stuffz and thats what you probably come here for ;) The first rule is don’t get all crazy with the decor. Adhere to a simple color palette bros, use one or two colors ONLY. Common winter colors are as follows; red, green, white, and tealish-bluish. Once you decide on a color theme, pair it with white black or a metallic – gold and silver can easily be used in place of white. If you want to get all granola-E like I did, pair it with something brownish and for a real slam dunk – made of burlap. Pick a style, as in country, modern, classic and stick with it. This is where you can use accents that represent your style. You’ll find these cool accents at the garden center covered in glitter or at craft stores like Michaels. You’ll want to have some texture in your containers. Achieve this by mixing it up. Use a few different greens and your box will be looking highly festive. It’s all about the layers as demonstrated in the cool gif above. Popular Greens for Window Boxes and Containers: Dogwood Branches red or green Spruce Tips Pine Boughs Cedar Boughs Oregonia Red Huck Eucalyptus Silver Dollars Winter Berry Hydrangea Sedum Flower Pepper Berry Rose hips Holly This is what I used for my boxes: 20 stems of 1′-2′ Spruce tips 20 stems of Cedar boughs 8 stems of cotton 8 pinecones 12 1′-2′ Birch branches assorted sizes. biodegradable Floral foam Pro Tip: As an alternative to floral foam give soil a try. Don’t install your container arrangements on super cold days, you want the temp to be just around freezing so you can easily push the stems into the soil. After you have placed your arrangement water the soil, this will freeze up and keep your winter greens in place for the season. Cool paper stars from Ikea. I got three to put in my front porch, they’re pretty and they flat pack at the end of the season for easy storage. The best.

Guys! The fence is like, technically done, but (and that’s a big but) I didn’t want to call it the official ‘after’ just yet – there is still work to be done, people! In case you didn’t notice, Minnesota is probably the last state out of all 50 of them to experience spring. We barely have buds on the trees, nothing is green and beautiful, and it’s still cold most days. It’s all brown and yellow and slightly greenish, but not green in a way that reads lush and full of life. Definitely not ideal for an official fence after shot, we need the green stuff! Brown aside, I am really loving the way the new fence turned out. We decided to leave a bit of space between the horizontal slats so that our backyard didn’t feel closed in. We weren’t interested in cutting ourselves off entirely from our neighbors or the neighborhood – so to us, it seemed like a good way to go about it. Our plans included extending the fence to incorporate the parking pad located next to the garage. We weren’t using it, and thought it could make a great space for the kids to play. Eventually someday, it could be a great future outdoor hangout space (aka patio). Our neighbor was on board with the new fence, and thought it would be good to add a six foot privacy fence along the alley side of our lot. In essence we transformed the back of the yard into a high security fortress, all we need is a moat and some battle axes and this would be a fully functioning castle. Fer real though, there has been quite a few garage break-ins lately, and we wanted to keep our shit secure – a six foot fence on the alley seemed like a good idea. We added a six foot “privacy” fence on the north side of our lot too. Our neighbor on that side happens to be a duplex, and its tenants are changing regularly – a taller fence just made sense. Remember in Home Alone where the Wet Bandits have their signature move of clogging drains and running water before they leave each home they’ve burglarized? Our fence builders do this too, although their calling card won’t make you really mad.
My Blue House Yeah! I’m so excited to share our new (old) blue house. I totally love it. It all turned out okay in the end but oh man was it a stressful process. From start to finish with rain delays it was just shy of 3 weeks, much, much longer than we thought it would. Anyway, I really, really seriously love how it turned out. The old asbestos 12″ x 24″ siding looks new and modern. You can barely tell it’s old. That is seriously the best part because I HATED that siding when it was white. The new blue color is the second best part. We went with Benjamin Moore’s “Twilight” a dark teal blue paint color. It’s the greatest. When the sun is directly on we have a blue house and in the shade it can almost look black. There’s a lot of dimension and depth to it. L.O.V.E. The porch Did you know that gardens really pay the price when it comes to exterior house painting. Every living plant in the yard (front & back) has been totally beaten to shreds. The only thing that was left unharmed was the veggie garden, thankfully. You know I don’t mind too much, I love an excuse to visit the old flower store. From the Front The curb appeal is much improved! We are still debating on what to do about the front door. It comes down to two options. One being to replace the door with a new storm door and paint it yellow, and the other is to stain a new wood porch door a golden/orangey color. We’ll see which wins. We also gotta do something about the walk up and the concrete steps but neither of those projects are happening this summer. The Back is the Best! I wasn’t expecting it, but the back is totally the best looking part of the whole house now! The corner boards pop and highlight the architecture. I don’t think it would look nearly as good if we didn’t add the corner boards. The back upstairs porch also looks great now that it is a different color from the rest of the house. We really do love it. P.S. The back steps aren’t staying green, don’t worry, I’ll paint ’em. And for those who were wondering, here is the color break down. &#9660 Main House Color: Benjamin […]

Cool Trick: Rollover the image to see what the paint looks like in the sunshine. We are getting down to the wire here, I / we / mostly ME need to commit to a paint color for the house. I think I’ve got it narrowed down to two. First, let me say, picking exterior paint colors totally blows! Interior colors are easy because they don’t cost a million dollars to change, duh. If painting every interior space of your home cost a few G’s per room, how easy would it be to pick a paint color? Blah blah blah, you get it, this is hard. The painters are scheduled to come in a week or two, I need to decide on something soon and you guys gotta help me. I’ve painted around the trim on the back of the house. One of the shades is a very dark teal called “twilight” from Benjamin Moore, the other is called “lead gray” (also from b.moore aka B.M. (ha, gross!)) and is the paint color used on my inspiration house. I like both, but I think I am leaning towards the bluer “twilight” color. I am so scared that once the color is up on the house it will look like a big old fat blueberry. We have a crazy neighbor lady who just painted all of her trim Vikings purple and the neighborhood is talking! I don’t want to be known as the “crazy lady with the blue house who lives next to the crazy lady with the purple house.” There are other color choices that need to be made as well, bah. Once we pick a exterior color I need to pick a color for the foundation, a trim color, and a color for the storm windows. I NEED HELP, like in a serious way. Any exterior color pros out there? If you choose a dark color for the house do you paint the trim in a bright white, or an off white? If I want to paint the storm windows black do I choose a true black or a dark charcoal, and what’s the deal with the foundation; do we go light or dark? I am helpless and almost hopeless. H E L P, (but not in a Beatles sort of a way.) ◊◊◊◊ Thanks to Katrina over at puglypixel.com for some major blog inspiration. I’ve been digging on her […]

I hope this is the last time I’ll be picking up a paint brush for awhile. Not only am I sick of painting, and painting, and painting, but I am also ready to start my outside projects for the summer. I painted the window boxes yesterday so I guess that’s an appropriate segue into moving my projects outside. I do/did love my red window boxes but alas, it was not meant to be. Now that we are narrowing down exterior paint colors for the house it’s time to say “bye, bye red” and “hello white”. Not wanting to do things out of order, I needed to paint these babies prior to filling them with flowers. *For those who were wondering, we did hire a house painter (!!!) and are scheduled in late May or early June! Can’t wait. …and 45 minutes later here they are, all clean white and shiny! I kind of miss the red, but these new white boxes will be good too. Especially after I whip that foundation garden into shape. I am totally getting obsessive about my grass too? I got one of those cool white grass covers (seen in the lower right above) that only insane people like myself get. Someday I’ll turn into one of those people who water their grass as a way to unwind at the end of the day. I can just see it now, me and my garden hose. Have you guys ever heard of this, Sunpatiens? Somehow some guys in Japan have created a hybrid Impatien that loves the sun. They are a little spendy (compared to a regular impatiens) but I went ahead and ordered 12 of them. I wanna know if they really work, and I really like the variegated leafs. I think I’ll plant a few in my window box and the rest in my boulevard garden.
