This weekend we celebrated Jeff’s 32nd b-day, he’s such an old man now! The weekend before I attended a baby shower for my cousin, and for both events I wrapped my gifts the same way, with white paper and black and white baker’s twine. I know this isn’t reinventing the wheel or anything, but I really like wrapping gifts this way because it looks sweet and thoughtful, and most importantly, it’s really easy. I always have a roll of Ikea drawing paper from the kids section meant for use with their easels. I use it all the time, currently it’s my jam for keeping my workspace clean while painting the kitchen cupboards. I also use it for background sweeps when I am taking pics for the blog, I use it for present wrapping, (obviously) and yes, sometimes the kids actually use it for drawing. I would highly recommend grabbing a roll next time you take a trip to your local Ikea. Rollover the Image above I like to add some hot pink washi tape too, just to be cool. Share this...
After helping my mom hang decorations on her Christmas tree last weekend, I realized how almost every year growing up we made a handmade ornament, whether it were at school, Sunday school, or at home with Mom. Inspired by a sparkly pinecone I created as a little runt, I made a late night trip to the drug store on Monday night to stock up on glue and glitter. Finn concentrates on his ornament skills. Our final product, ornaments for each kid plus some to use as gifts for Moms, Dads, Grandmas & Grandpas. The project itself was super easy, but keeping the glitter on the pinecones was a little harder. I recommend using a large Gladware or Ziploc container to sprinkle your glitter in, a paper bowl to roll your glue in and paper plates to rest your final product.
What better way to celebrate mom’s birthday than a delicious brunch. I think we can all agree the breakfast is the best meal you could ever eat so I did it up big for mom’s bday. Here’s the stats:Homemade Coffee CakeCarmel Rolls from scratchEgg BakeFruitDelicious Bacon from Everett’sAnd Scoops Famous Potatoes Have you ever made coffee cake from scratch? This was my first, and I realize that there is no other way to have a coffee cake unless you bake it yourself. So GOOD! I followed this recipe on epicurious and ended up with the most delicious coffee cake ever. My son now thinks he should have “Cake” for breakfast every day of the week. These things looked pretty awesome but only turned out OKAY. Not enough carmel!!!, I mean what’s the point? Seriously? My mom is one of the lucky ones who get’s to enjoy peony’s at every birthday. My new yard came equiped with one large peony bush that only wanted to make one small flower. These beauties came straight from the grocery store… Insert sad face here. And as promised, a fancy knit dishcloth. I followed this pattern from this very thorough and indepth dish-cloth-pattern site. So there you have it… mom’s birthday in a nut shell. Share this...
It is well known rule of thumb that it never snows after my dad’s birthday. I think this year we can safely say that will happen, so onward spring. To celebrate the big day I decided to whip this delicious chocolate (since cakes are my specialty and all, plus I love birthdays.) Like all good recipes, I found it here over at my favorite recipe gettin’ place epicurious.com, I will forewarn you though that the frosting is pretty rich, but oh so deelisseoso, (that’s how we say delicious at our house.) Woah Man, check out these layers, it’s like entering the 5th dimension of Narnia (but not really like that). Like all good dads your birthday buffet should consist of chocolate cake, record presents, and gin & tonics. This is exactly what I would want if I was a dad. During the house packing, in a fit of unconscious tossing , I decided to part with all of the random scraps of wrapping paper I had around, thus when I want to wrap something now I must get creative. For this special present I use the city pages and I whip up a handmade bow. If any of you ever find yourselves in this situation check out howaboutorange.com for tips on making the perfect magazine cover bow. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

I made this adorable little hat (and booties not pictured) for Flicka last spring before she was even born, her mom Urs just sent me some photos of Flicka modeling the goods. This hat is just about to be too small for this little lady. This is a great resource for last minute gifts.
A few posts ago I told you how I made some super delicious cupcakes for my lady Valeria’s baby shower. Now that the shower is over it is safe for me to share with you the baby sling that I made for her. I had a ton of fabric left over from when I made Elsa’s crib bumpers and the fabric is just too pretty to not use again so I resurrected the Pop Daisy fabric out of my fabric box and got to it. First thing’s first. I cut two 53 inch x 23 inch pieces of fabric and placed them face to face. You can measure to fit the Mom you are making this for so your fabric sizes may vary in length. The width of your fabric will determine how deep your sling is. Adjust as you see fit. I then sewed along three of the edges to make a sort of super long pillow case. Leaving one of the short sides open. Once I turned this pillowcase right side out, I ironed it. Then, you’ll want to take a look at the end that you left open and turn about a 1/2 inch inside to finish off the edge real nice. Take your iron to it as a nice crease will make the fabric stay folded. Now, take the opposite end and put it inside the open end. (see above) Stick some pins in here to hold the two ends together. You should now have a tube of fabric. Bring this tuber over to your sewing machine and stitch about a 1/4 inch in from the edge. Are you still with me? Good. Let’s continue, shall we? Once you have stitched one pass, line your presser foot up with the stitch you just made and put a second line of stitches in. Once you have this done you will be good to start hauling your babe around. When your baby is tiny, you can take her around like this. My baby is not tiny anymore. This bear was kind enough to demonstrate what a tiny baby might look like in this sling. When your baby gets bigger than that bear, you can tote her around in this sling like this. Share this...
WAY back in December, Alison had a Birthday. In honor of the day that Scoops came into this world, I cooked up this bag for her to keep her ever growing collection of yarns, skeins, hooks and things of that sort in. The outside felt is made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. I think that is pretty cool. The inside fabric screamed “SCOOPS” to me so I just had to use it. Although it is not made of anything that has been recycled, just straight up cotton. Happy Belated Birthday Friend! Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Guess what? It was my good friend Cam’s birthday last Friday and in honor of her special day I made her this special owl pillow. Cam loves owl’s more than most things so I thought this would be a fitting gift. I borrowed some inspiration from a few different owl pillow’s I saw on flickr and came up with my own version. This pillow is made of felt and love, AND… I got to use my sewing machine again. It’s official, I am such a pro. This owl has feathers, it is very important that all owl’s have feathers. My mom bought me these “Specially Handmade by Alison” tags a long long time ago, I am glad that I finally got to put one to use. What I really need is a tag that says “Specially Hand Made by Scoops” Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

There are at least 5 other patterns I’d like to make in that book, so I will be busy making socks for awhile. Next on the docket, “Child’s First Sock”, in a really sweet Koigu mustard colored yarn.
I’ve finally finished Finn’s ripple blanket and just in time for the cozy fall months too. I started this project in March thinking it would take a few weeks… a few months later I was still working on it and hoping I would finish it in time for his 1st birthday. I didn’t make the birthday deadline but I did make it before the summer was over, a whole 6 months later. I was originally going to be way too ambitious and try and make the afghan so that it could be used as coverlet on a twin sized bed, instead its ended up being big enough to cover a crib mattress, and maybe eventually could be folded across the end of his twin bed. Eames chairs making everything look better. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

It’s always hard to find the right wedding gift, especially in the age of wedding registries. It’s easy to order something online but it’s difficult to make it from the heart or personalized. Being that this is a special wedding I decide to make Erik & Jenn some hand made embroidered napkins. These guys love their cats a ton, so a napkin for each cat it is. This is my 2nd attempt at embroidery, and again, as with all projects it takes me 10 million times longer than I expect. It’s a good thing I had tons of time to kill in that hotel room.
It’s 50’s 28th birthday and I decide to make him a Stix case. This case can be used for one of two things, he can either put his drumstix in here, or his paintstix, or both. Either way he now has a styling new case made with love. Just in case anyone gets confused as to who’s stix case this really is. All rolled up, there is two button holes depending on whether or not Matt is toting a lot of stixs or only a few.
Check it. I was invited to a bachelorette party this weekend, one of the requirements was that you had to bring lingerie for the bride to be. I was kind of panicking about what I would bring since I don’t know too much about lingerie and other pretty things one would wear before they’re about to do it. Jeff came up with the idea that I crochet her some undies. In Jeff’s vision I would put the initials “P” on one boob and “D” on the other (the initials of the brides future husband) and then write the words “vag” across the crotch. I opted not do that, cause I’m classy like that. Here I am modeling the goods. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

I was at Crafty Planet last week for the first time and I was inspired to try my hand at an embroidery project. I have done some cross stitching as a kid but that’s it. I pick up a kit of rock and roll and proceed to make Finn a customized onezie. I am sure that there a lot of people that already know about these kits and embroidery patterns but it is all new to me. So JIC you would like to learn more about them you can pick up your own kit here at Sublime Stitching. Holy Crap! I am doing it. I just follow the pattern, easy. Next step, add some tunes. I take one of these cool Mark-B-Gone pens and label the tape. Then I embroider over it. Awes. In the morning Finn checks out his new outfit he is not as impressed as I am, but that’s okay. I think it’s cool Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Guess what? I made a beer cozy for my best beer drinking friend, Jeff “Waff” Allen! This is the first time that I’ve created a crochet project without a pattern, I just guessed how to do it and it worked. Step 1. I start at the bottom. Beer bottles are round so I decided that making a round shaped bottom would probably be a good idea. Step 2: Get authentically Krausened, beer is good to drink while crafting. Step 3: Just keep going round and round. Step 4: I changed it up a little bit by changing the stitch, thus creating a pattern. Step 4: Stop stitching when you get to the top. Step 5: Add your drinking buddies nickname. Success!
