I've been on one lately. Ever since the beginning of the year I've been crushing my organization and cleaning goals. It feels great, I'm finally on the side of the fence where I feel like I'm keeping my stuff organized and tidy, and just knowing that everything has a place makes me feel great. We had made it to a point of being in our home for so long (10 years now!) that there were tons of random tiny piles. To get rid of junk and to find place for things that are important and worthy has lifted such a weight...

Guys! I’m gonna share a secret, the one thing you can do to improve your homes interior during the winter months, is make sure to give your windows (storms too) a good cleaning before it gets too cold. Although there are many different brands of window cleaner and a lot of DIY window natural window cleaning recipes, I prefer to use a few spritz’ of Windex with Vinegar. I just discovered it a few years back and it has changed my window cleaning life. Use the soft side of a sponge to help to knock off stuck on dirt and grime, and eliminate finger prints. There are as many squeegee methods as the day is long. I like to work top to bottom, left to right. Make sure you have good contact with the blade and pull down at a 45º angle. It’s imperative that you wipe the blade clean using a lint free cloth between swipes. This will prevent drips or lint from the blade making its way onto your newly cleaned window. Window Cleaning Tools Our house has exterior storm windows which help with drafts in the winter. I like to remove the storm windows first, then move outside to clean the exterior side of the windows. Inside, I’ll clean the interior windows, and then finish by cleaning both sides of each storm window. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Hey Guys! How’s it going? As promised, I’m sharing a bit more with you guys about my mission to tidy up this house. By tidy I don’t mean “clean.” I mean go through everything, determine what can stay and what goes, and finding a permanent spot for every item/object/thing. My go to strategy is pretty simple. I empty the room or area that needs to be cleaned of all its contents – that’s right, every last thing. It’s kind of like moving without the packing. Next, I consider the space and determine if any of the main pieces of furniture need to be moved out of the space or rearranged. In the case of the music room I decided it made much more sense to have the piano on a different wall. The space is small, apprx 9 x 12 feet. I also added some more Expedit shelving that I had been hoarding since last summer, when the line was discontinued. Once the furniture was in place, I then began to slowly and methodically place the items back into the space. I consider each item determining whether or not it is garbage, can be donated, needs to be moved to a different location, or remains in the space. I do that for the better part of a day, an blamo! – I’m left with a clean tidy space. Everything in the room feels fresh and new. The purpose of our “music room” is to house our always growing record collection, while at the same time hosting a growing stash of instruments. The room is used nearly every day. Finn practices piano, Jeff will sneak away to play guitar, and jamz are being played on the record player often. It was fairly easy to come up with two main areas for the space. The record and stereo zone, and the instrument area. It all just needed to be organized to be cohesive and easily accessible. The room was in need of lighting. It faces east and becomes very dark in the evenings. Our fam is on a budget, so I decided to come up with the best looking, lowest cost solution available. As always, Ikea had me covered. I was able to use the Ekby bracket with the Sekond black and white braided cord to achieve a easy modern look. I spray painted the plastic tubing flat black and inserted a […]

Hey Guys! Thanks for all the sweet and honest feedback on my tidying post last week. I would’ve done it either way but hearing that so many of you felt similarly about your houses, apartments, and spaces, encouraged me to jump right into the deep end! Ace was also super generous encouraging all us Ace bloggers to really get into a big project this summer. For me that was the garage. Last month I shared with you the exterior transformation and the big update on alley appeal. What’s that old saying? Oh yeah, “you can’t judge a book by its cover” or in this case “you can’t assume I would give any craps about the interior of my garage just cause I threw up a few windows, and added a-couple-a flower boxes on the exterior of it”. See below. I started with what is most likely the biggest mess in town, our garage. Since the spring it has become a dumping place and what was to be a temporary home for all our displaced basement items. When we began moving our basement into the garage earlier this spring we attempted to be organized in our process. Eventually as it became more crowded we would just open the smaller garage door and toss stuff in. Needless to say it was a complete and total chaotic mess, and everything needed to be taken out, gone through, and organized. I started by removing everything from the garage. I choose a time when I knew weather would be in my favor, the days were cool and the chance of rain was minimal. All the contents of my garage where moved into the backyard. I immediately began making piles for kids stuff, gardening supplies, tools & construction materials, garbage, and items to be donated. It was tedious but I felt encouraged the more and more I emptied the garage. After the garage was totally cleared out, I began thinking about the best way to use the space. I had quite a few shelves and tables from the basement that I was able to repurpose and I began thinking of storage in terms of zones. The biggest new additions to the garage was my tool collection. Prior to this spring all this handy stuff was making its home in what is now our laundry room. It was always the plan that in order for the basement […]

Sometimes the best things in life are free, blah blah blah. Whatever, I couldn’t think of a cool intro. You’ll just have to tolerate my lame catch phrase. Sorry people. I’ve been spending tons of time making our bedroom nice, I’ve got lots to share with you guys in the coming weeks. First things first though. I couldn’t live with my mess of a closet any longer. It was one of those things where it stayed tidy for awhile and then just spiraled out of control. When friends or family came stopped by for a visit I’d find myself jamming everything into the closet and trying to shove the door closed. It was bad. We don’t have a fancy big closet or anything, just a small semi-walk-in closet that is tucked in under the eves of the house. It runs the depth of our room, 10 feet or so and is relatively functional for the size. We have space for foldables and hangables and the closet even hides a ladder to access our attic. We don’t have tons of clothes or anything, and it has worked perfectly for us (except for when it’s a mess). Here is my closet the last time I cleaned it out (you might notice that was nearly 3 years ago), not too much is different then how it sits today. I had previously lined the shelves with leftover wallpaper from the music room and painted the walls black. Yes, I was trying to be all cool and stuff, but I should’ve known better than to paint a small closet black, we can’t all make good choices all of the time. I took everything out of the closet, painted it white and repapered the shelves in the leftover hygge & west wallpaper that I used on the far wall in our bedroom. Then I purged like nobodies business donating nearly four bags of clothes. Next I organized all the hangers, wooden for Jeff, white plastic for me (cause I’m classy like that) and then I refolded and rehung everything! It’s so great now. Getting dressed is kind of fun, I feel like I have access to all these clothes that had gone missing for months, because that is actually what did happen. Hands down cleaning this mess of a closet has changed the overall feel of the bedroom. Okay so I lied, this wasn’t free. I […]

Hey-a, Folks! I have a confession. For the last 4 or 5 months I have been a bad housekeeper. Keeping the house tidy used to be something I kinda actually enjoyed, but then things got busy. I’ve been spending a lot of time focusing on the blog, gardening and hanging with the kids, avoiding the daily cleaning chores that used to bring me peace and calm. I especially avoided the deeper cleaning aspects of keeping a tidy home. When we decided that I would stay home with the kids part of the arrangement was that I would be responsible for keeping the home (aka cleaning up). I know that kind of sounds old fashioned but the entire reason that I was staying home was so that I could be with the kids during the day, and it would allow us all more time together as a family on nights and weekends. I had been managing a restaurant for a long time, and those were not typical or family friendly hours. This was a chance for us to be together more often, and we wouldn’t have to spend our precious family time cleaning. We just recently got a new vacuum and my love affair with keeping a clean home has been reignited. We had a long run with a more affordable hoover wind tunnel. It broke a few years ago and we spent almost as much money as it would have cost brand new to have it fixed, at the time we didn’t really have the dough to go out and buy a new vacuum. We promised that the next time the vacuum gave out we would use a little rainy day money and invest in something that would last. After much research and debate we decided on this Miele S6270 vac (not sponsored or anything b-t-dubs) and so far it’s been the best. What I really like about it is that it does an awesome job cleaning the hardwood floors, and it’s easy to get under furniture. It even sucks up the little dust pieces along the edges of cabinets, dirt our old vac was to clunky to get at. I hardly use the broom anymore. I also love that it’s a canister vacuum and I can tuck it away in the mudroom cabinets instead of downstairs in the basement. Now it’s always within reach. In celebration of the new […]

Ha, if you thought this post was about Minneapolis’ very own 90’s-indie-rock band, The Hidden Chord, I really got you fooled. Props to those who got the very obscure reference, to the majority of you who have no idea what I am talking about, I sincerely apologize. This post is actually about hiding unsightly cords and cables. Okay, okay, so I’m not reinventing the wheel or anything, you guys probably know all about products that make it easy to disguise your cords. Cable upkeep is often overlooked and just happened to be one of the last things on my sunroom-makeover to-do list. Since it’s cold, grey and still not springy out, I took I’d take it upon myself to finish this one last task while at the same time reminding you all to put cord tidying on your spring to-do list. I’m sure you never noticed these cords in my sunroom photos I shared two weeks ago, that’s because my photographs are just lies. LIES! I hide all that ugly stuff in secret hiding spots or sometimes, gasp, I even photoshop them out. If you guys even knew the truth. For instance in my living room, there is a piece of artwork that is not centered on the wall – instead of taking out a hammer and nail and centering the frame like a normal person would, I photoshop it into place every single time I share photos of my living room with you. I am such a liar, you guys! Sometimes living the lie just seems easier and more convenient then facing facts, manning up and tidying up my space. I promise, I’ll hide the cords and yes, I’ll even get out my hammer and a nail and adjust the artwork on the living room wall. Sheesh. Okay, so if you’ve never used these cable channels before they are really easy to install. They come in different sizes and shapes. Above I am using a quarter round and a half round style from D-Line. The quarter round gives you the option of trimming out baseboard moldings as a way to super-sneaklily-disguise your cords and cables. Almost all of the products on the market these days are paintable too, so it makes it really easy to hide away your technological mess. I picked up these white channels at my local hardware store. The installation is very basic. All you have […]
