Guys, I may have been a little MIA this week. We’ve been busy celebrating the birthday of our young man, Finn. He’s six now you guys, that’s super old. If you’ve been coming around this blog for awhile now you probably already know that Finn shares a birthday with his good buddy, Elsa, who turned 5 yesterday (also super old). Elsa and Finn have grown up together, they are the oldest kids of all our friends and thankfully they enjoy each others company because their parents hang out together all of the times. I babysat Elsa (daily) for a couple years, and she has practically become a member of our family. Anyways, Elsa totally skipped school yesterday and spent the day with Finn (so badass at 5). It was pretty awesome. The kids started the day in a sweet royal-blanket-play-fort that somebody’s mom (a-hem) set up for them in the backyard. Pretend coffee and raisins anyone? These kids really know how to party. We followed it up by a trip to the MOA (aka the mall of ‘merica) for Burger King and rides, because there is an indoor theme park inside of the mall! You guys, two words, “Mirror Maze”. It’s not part of Nickelodeon Universe, only the true heads know where to find it. Look for it the next time you are at the mall, you won’t regret it. Later in the afternoon we made ice cream, set up a chill party scene in the backyard, lost a few balloons (don’t ask) and got prepared for a majorly awesome party by stuffing ourselves with the best frozen pizza in town, heggies. Super tyte. Then there was the party, which all the neighborhood kids attended (ages 1-13). There were Doritoz given as presents (Grandma knows what her kids like), buck-wild lightsaber battles, more balloons and really intense and highly illegal Wisconsin-style sparklers. It was an awesome birthday. I’m glad those kids let me be apart of it. Now to get ready for Gus’ b-day, T-minus 12 days. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

I don’t know about you, but we’ve been working hard on our Valentine’s over at Casa La Allen. It is Finn’s 1st official V-Day at school this year and he is responsible for bringing a Valentine (or as I like to say “Valentimes”) for each one of his classmates. Making Valentines involves a lot of stress and excitement for Finn, because he’s a ball of anxiety just like his mom. He was desperate to learn exactly how we were going to make Valentines for all his buddies having never done it before. Not to worry little man, mom’s got you covered. We have a decent amount of craft and art supplies around our house, and all I knew was that we were going to make these things ourselves, obviously. Finn’s has a limited attention span when it comes to arts and crafts and I wanted him to feel like he contributed to each one of these Valentine’s. So I thought of the easiest thing I could possibly think of; painting coffee filters with water colors. It’s hard to screw this up (even if your 4) and it has a pretty cool tie dyed effect. Gus was even able to help his bro out and we had 20 filters painted and set to dry within half an hour. Last night we headed over to the craft store for some small bags and some goodies for his classmates including some super cute heart erasers. Today we are addressing and filling bags, and mom is helping punch holes, cutting hearts and tying them on with bakers twine. We’re a pretty efficient little machine.
I don’t think I mentioned that Elsa has headed off to daily preschool after spending weekdays at our house for the last year and a half. We are so happy for her and her new life adventures, but we miss her like crazy! Last weekend Finn and his old bud were reunited for the first time in a few weeks. Elsa had received multiple pairs of ice skates for Christmas gifts and she needed to share them with Finn. The kids headed out to the local park to give ice skating a try last Saturday. Minneapolis parks are awesome and provide skates and trainer bars for free, it’s pretty tyte of them. Elsa is an old pro at this skating thing and was doing double lutz axels and triple salchows (totally had to google that spelling) all over the place. This was Finn’s first time and although he wasn’t doing any cool spins he was making his way around the rink. They seriously both did great, and can’t wait to go again. It makes me happy to see these guys together. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

I’ve been enjoying life at kid speed these days. Now that the winter is officially behind us there has been so much time to enjoy the outside!! I’m already dreading having to go back indoors when the fall comes around again. Last week we had some good adventures, I hope that this is just a glimpse of what is to come for the rest of the summer. The mercury touched 80º once or twice last week and the kids went straight to the backyard to break in the sprinkler. On Thursday we enjoyed a post thunderstorm rain walk followed by a fierce “stick racing to the sewer drain” competition. We topped it off with a lazy Friday in a backyard-blanket-fort. Things are pretty nice these days. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

I’ve taken the last week or so to put some finishing touches on Elsa’s bedroom. At the time of my last post I had yet to paint the edges of the doors or finish painting the radiator. I thought I’d take a quick minute to share the results! Do you know how toward the end of a painting project you are just SO over painting and the looming clean up is just kinda hanging over you all ominous and heavy like? Then, just about when you are ready to call it, you look in your paint can and it seems that there just MIGHT be enough paint to finish up that one thing that you thought you might have to save for “round 2” so you go for it but then it turns out that you are one radiator section short on paint? You know that feeling, right? Well, that’s just what happened to me. I had painted all the windows, doors and moulding. I was just about to start my clean up when that off white-ish looking radiator was just daring me to test the remaining amount of paint in my can. I went for it and came SO close to finishing. I obviously had to finish what I had started, so off to the store for a quart of Balmy Seas. It was such a bummer, I barely put a dent in that paint can. But, I guess it’s nice to have some extra for touch ups and impromptu projects. My mom is a super human when it comes to painting things. You name it, I’m pretty sure she has painted it. I had seen her paint a few radiators in my day and after checking the specs on the Behr website and the obvious brush strokes on the current paint job, I decided that it was ok to use standard wall paint on the radiator. I really don’t think that I would have been able to achieve the color blocking effect I was going for had I sprayed the radiator white. So back to these door edges. I had some paint leftover from painting Elsa’s toy box and just couldn’t really get enough of it. Painting the edge of a door has seriously got to be the easiest way to add an element of surprise to a room. It is so unobtrusive and a really refreshing way […]

Us Ripplinger’s moved into our house close to a year-and-a-half ago. My plan for our new place was to take care of all the common areas first. You know, the ones that company would use the most and see the most and judge us by. Mission accomplished, we have done just that. However, it has become insanely obvious to me that I have been neglectful of the rest of my home. Most importantly, Elsa’s bedroom. Ugh, sorry Sweetie! You see, when we moved into our new place it was in a whirlwind to remove any representation of the previous inhabitants, whom had been here for 90+ years, and with intention to immediately put our finger print on our new space. This led to hasty paint color selections and half-hearted attempts to make the place ‘ours’. I immediately painted Elsa’s bedroom the same color that I had painted her nursery at the old place, Balmy Seas (Behr 490C-3), and then stopped. There it sat, a pretty color teal with weird brown moulding and a mattress on the floor. A few weeks ago I walked into her room and thought to myself, “Nicole, this bedroom sucks!” Then I got out a roll of painters tape and a huge ass bucket of white paint and went for it. I wasn’t ready to rid the walls of that Balmy Seas paint color entirely. I opted to paint the top half of the room, molding ‘n all, white. Not off white, which some folks swear by, but regular old pure-as-the-driven-snow, white. (Side note-white is totes my new obsession. I would paint every wall in my house white if I knew I could keep it clean.) This girl’s room was getting a make over. I am by no means a professional painter but I used to spend a fair amount of time helping a paint crew paint gallery walls all sorts a crazy and managed to pick up a few tips on how to get a good crisp paint line. Key items for making this happen: laser level and painters tape. Once your painters tape is in place be sure that your tape is stuck down real good. Now, if your anything like me, you’ll want to jump in there with your paint roller and just go for it. Don’t. Take your paint brush and paint along that tape line. I’d give it two coats, depending […]

I’ve been trying to come up with a fun Valentine’s Day project for awhile and was inspired when I saw this V-Day post over at Small for Big. This one was fun, quick and easy.
So a year ago yesterday I did a post about how cold and snowy it was and how I couldn’t stand it anymore. Seriously, last year was nuts. I think by February 1st it had already snowed 5 feet or something. Totally unreal, plus it was in the negative digits for weeks on end. So here we are February 1st 2012 and I can see grass, it’s 40º out and there are puddles. For realz. I actually think spring is right around the corner. Let me back up a sec. So, if you weren’t following me last year this is what happened. I was totally over winter and I had the SADS so Finn and I take a trip to the flower store to pick up some succulents to fend off those winter blues. We plant them and wait for spring. One year later; 40% of the succulents are dead, 40% are huge and the remaining 20% (aka 1 plant if you’re good at math) is super crazy and weird looking. Not bad odds? Not so sure about that. Anyway. Just like the Empire Penguins march to lay their eggs so do Finn and I march to the flower store every February 1st hoping for signs of spring. Taking into consideration our not so hot odds with succulents, we go the extra mile and buy a new planter and some drainage rocks and some dirt so these guys can have an actual chance; all things we should’ve done last year. Finn & Elsa take charge and a planting we-a-go. We plant our succulents and set them in the window. We are dead set on spring. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

A few weeks ago we were contacted by children’s clothing company Tea and asked to review their clothing. Tea is a cool little company located in San Francisco, CA. Their globally inspired designs make for comfy and modern clothes for our little dudes and dudettes! They aspire to be global citizens and take great pride in giving back to their community. They have created a line of t-shirts called “little citizens of the world” in which they donate all their proceeds to Global Fund for Children. Not only that their clothing is made of high quality natural fabrics and feels awesome to the touch. Scoops and I got our families together last weekend for some backyard kid fort fun and a few refreshing adult summer beverages. We had the kiddos try on their new duds while exploring and playing in the backyard. It’s amazing to learn how much magic a few sheets and some clothes pins hold. These kids had so much fun playing in an impromptu backyard fort. Finn’s Long Sleeve Purity Tee and Elsa’s Flor Del Mar Pocket Dress, both made of a lovely pima cotton, easily kept up with these two crazy kiddos! Snack Break! Royal the dog tries to get in on a much needed muffin break. We can’t forget Gus, he needs to get in on the action too. Not big enough for fort parties he chills with mom in his new bodysuit perfect for the upcoming fall weather. This clothing is so soft that you don’t feel like you need to wash it a million times before putting next to newborn baby skin. Tea Collection offers up clothing for children of all sizes. Check out their Fall 2011 Children’s Clothing collection, inspired by a cross country trip south of border to Mexico. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

We celebrated Elsa’s 2nd birthday this past Saturday. It is insane how fast these kiddos grow! It really does seem like yesterday that Aaron and I were bringing this little sweetie baby home from the hospital. Elsa’s has recently decided that she is obsessed with balloons. It made sense that her party center around this obsession. I ordered up 40 balloons and sent Rip to pick them up the morning of the party. I would have ordered more but transporting any more balloons from the party store to our house would have logistically been a bit more difficult than it already was. Evidently Rip had some concern about how he was going to fit said 40 balloons into his car. Not to worry, they all made it home and Elsa was tickled. I found a paper party crown kit at Paper Source. Here they are! King and Queen of the party! I pulled up a couple of recipes from Smitten Kitchen to fill out my party spread. Check out how I made these homemade marshmallows and super delish strawberry cake. Elsa has replaced her desire to watch Toy Story 3 over and over and over again with a desire to watch the British stop motion animation Shaun the Sheep over and over and over and over again. Shaun made an appearance at the party. Elsa thought that was pretty awesome! Other gifts of note: A Purple Princes Papazan Chair. (Say that 5 times fast.) A sweet ass wagon for her and Finn to buzz around in. A killer slide for the backyard. The Dads Choice award for Best Present goes to this Alligator Sprinkler that Finn brought for Elsa. Jeff and Rip had the best time showing the kids how to properly jump through a sprinkler. Thanks everyone for making Elsa’s party super special! Share this...
Elsa turned 1 on 7/16. It is truly amazing what can happen in a year! In a mere 365 days, my Girl Elsa has gone from a tiny little helpless bundle to a walking, babbling, curiously independent little girl. This blows my mind! We had a Birthday cookout for her, complete with brats, potato salad, fruit salad, baked beans and CAKE!!! We invited our Family and Friends and made a great afternoon of it. Elsa was a good helper during the preparations. Here we are making potato salad. I found this cake over at Wisk Kid WAY back when Elsa was just a brand new girl. I decided the second that I saw it that it was the perfect cake to commemorate the first year of my Girls life. This cake is delicious. You should make it. Here is the cake, all dolled up and ready for the party. My frosting didn’t come together as well as I would have liked it to, but it tasted pretty dang good! My homie, M. Stewart helped me make these tissue paper pom-poms. Big shout out to my other Lady, K. Johnson for her help putting these things together as well. Doing crafty crafts with your friends is always a “good thing”. I fashioned this Birthday Banner out of some fabric that I had left over from Elsa’s bird mobile. You can learn more about that little project here. To accompany our brats, I soaked some red cabbage in some apple cider vinegar and salt overnight. It is a perfect alternative to sour kraut and adds a beautiful pop of color to any table. Elsa loves raspberry jelly sandwiches. I thought it appropriate that they be part of our spread. They were a big hit! We had been practicing how to blow out birthday candles in the days leading up to the party. Unfortunately, we never practiced on a real cake with a real candle. Elsa wasn’t exactly sure what she needed to do at this stage in the game. I helped her out and we got though it unscathed! Here is an inside look at that 6 layer birthday cake. So that is it! One year down, many, many, many more to look forward to!Thank you to ALL of our Family and Friends for being so generous with your time and love during Elsa’s first year! We are a lucky, lucky bunch […]

To commemorate this day we call Valentine’s Day, Elsa and I got up and cooked Rip some breakfast. What else would you eat on Valentine’s Day but heart shaped pancakes? Once the table was set, I was surprised with this really sweet robot Valentine and this really cool sewing book called One Yard Wonders. This book has 101 sewing projects that use 1 yard of fabric or less. This book also comes with patterns. This is a bit intimidating due to the fact that I have never used a pattern. Most of my sewing projects are done freestyle from some plan that is cooked up in my head and pulled from extremely primitive sketches from my sketch book. So, this will be good. Elsa is just getting used to eating solid foods now. Today she really got into her pancake. Other things she is into eating: peas, squash, carrots, bananas. Things she is NOT into eating: applesauce and plum flavored things. Hope you all have a sweet day with your sweet hearts! Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter
