You guys, something big happened earlier this week. My eldest son/dude started kindergarten. That is a crazy huge milestone for both him and me. I’m so totally excited for him as he’s been way ready to start school. He has one of those funny summertime birthdays and you can choose to send the kids when they are either five or six, we decided to send him when he was six, because it was good to have him around for just another year. However, he’s been out of his mind this summer – a ball of energy and questions with nowhere to unload them. I love the kid to death, but it was time for him to get out of the house and go hang out at school. He’s done fine with the transition, and I know he’s gonna do great at ruling this school thing. So that means I’m at home with just one kid, which is also totally crazy weird. I had worked up until Gus was born and was never at home with Finn full time. I’ve never had just one kid in my house day after day. I’m very much looking forward to having one-on-one time with my Gus. Big things, big changes. Have a cool weekend, dudes! Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Guys, I may have been a little MIA this week. We’ve been busy celebrating the birthday of our young man, Finn. He’s six now you guys, that’s super old. If you’ve been coming around this blog for awhile now you probably already know that Finn shares a birthday with his good buddy, Elsa, who turned 5 yesterday (also super old). Elsa and Finn have grown up together, they are the oldest kids of all our friends and thankfully they enjoy each others company because their parents hang out together all of the times. I babysat Elsa (daily) for a couple years, and she has practically become a member of our family. Anyways, Elsa totally skipped school yesterday and spent the day with Finn (so badass at 5). It was pretty awesome. The kids started the day in a sweet royal-blanket-play-fort that somebody’s mom (a-hem) set up for them in the backyard. Pretend coffee and raisins anyone? These kids really know how to party. We followed it up by a trip to the MOA (aka the mall of ‘merica) for Burger King and rides, because there is an indoor theme park inside of the mall! You guys, two words, “Mirror Maze”. It’s not part of Nickelodeon Universe, only the true heads know where to find it. Look for it the next time you are at the mall, you won’t regret it. Later in the afternoon we made ice cream, set up a chill party scene in the backyard, lost a few balloons (don’t ask) and got prepared for a majorly awesome party by stuffing ourselves with the best frozen pizza in town, heggies. Super tyte. Then there was the party, which all the neighborhood kids attended (ages 1-13). There were Doritoz given as presents (Grandma knows what her kids like), buck-wild lightsaber battles, more balloons and really intense and highly illegal Wisconsin-style sparklers. It was an awesome birthday. I’m glad those kids let me be apart of it. Now to get ready for Gus’ b-day, T-minus 12 days. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Oh man! It downpoured for 15 minutes late yesterday afternoon, and as soon as the rain was over the kids went out to splash in some puddles. Typically they like to truck through the puddles at a million miles an hour trying to make as much sweet spray as they can. They like me to take videos of them so they can see how cool it/they look(s). So I obliged, I ran inside to get my phone because that’s how I take videos (duh). I used to use my camera to capture moments, but now I use my always-at-the-ready phone. Isn’t that so lame? I mean it’s good in a pinch, but I’ve really come to rely on it. Sitting on my desk was my phone and my camera, guess which one I grabbed – I bet you can already tell by these pics. I used my camera! I love all these photos I took of them puddle stompin’ – I realized I would really like to try and get my camera out in the action a bit more. Aren’t these kids getting so big? They are going to be six and three this month and I wish I would have taken the time to document more of the last year on my real camera. It’s on. I’m going to do better! Share this...
Hey Guys! It’s finally feeling like spring is happening here in the midwest. Trees are budding, grass is greening up and everyday I spy more and more plants in my yard that are poking through the dirt. It’s all really exciting, and is by far my favorite time of year. Finn and I have been planning an addition to our raised bed veggie garden for months. We’ve been waiting weeks for the weather to turn so that we can build it. Finally, that day has come! We spent all of the day yesterday outside building our new raised bed garden! Two years ago we built our first raised bed garden on the side of our house. Since then we have become much better gardeners and have learned a lot about what grows well in our tiny space and what we like to eat. We finally felt like we were ready for an expansion, adding more leafy greens and trying to grow some french fries (aka potatoes) for the first time. Supply List (Supplies for 2′ x 8′ Raised Bed Garden) 2 – 2″ x 6″ x 8′ Cedar Boards 2 – 2″ x 6″ x 2′ Cedar Boards 32 – Screws Drill Bits Rubber Mallet 4 – Burpee Pivot Corners Level Square Shovel Edger 4 – 40lb Bags of Top Soil 4 – 40lb Bags of Compost 1 Large Bag of Peat Moss This is the second time we have used pivoting corners to build our gardens. Now you could just skip this using 2×2 boards to square off your garden but I think the pivot corners are really great for a few reasons. Firstly, you can angle your garden, not everything has to be square people! Our first garden angles and follows the lines of our house, I really like the look and it helps to make a nice walking path around the side of our home. Secondly, the pivot corners slide into one another making it extremley easy to remove old boards with new ones when the time comes. Thirdly, it’s really easy to open up and expand an single garden with these. For instance, it would be no problem to make our new 8′ garden a 12′ garden if that’s what we wanted to do. You’ll want to use cedar lumber for this project, it’s expensive but worth it. Cedar is rot resistant and since your lumber […]

We had a fun summer but I think he was getting a little bored of being around the house all the time and was ready to welcome a new adventure. He’s amped to discover new things and meet new friends. I’m excited for him, we know he’ll do great this year! Yay Finn! Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

A Little Dude with a Broken Leg and some Cabin Kidz at Dusk Well guys, and so begins the craziness of July. This is typically a busy month most everyone in the world, because it’s the best part of the whole summer! Always packed full of weddings, vacations, holidays, and BBQ’s. For me, that craziness is doublefied. I’ve got two very important dudes in my life having two very important 5th and 2nd birthdays less than 2 weeks apart. Let the craziness begin. Besides feeling very overwhelmed by the birthday activities coming up in the next few weeks, we also have a vacation planned in the middle of it all. You should see all the lists in my life right now, they are the only thing that keeps me sane. Oh yeah, my guy Gus decided that wrestling his older brother is really cool, and my guy Finn decided that wrestling his baby brother was a really good way to take out pent up older-brother-agression. The result was a broken leg and a day spent in the urgent care last week. Gus is the smiliest broken leg guy there is (even though the above photo doesn’t show it) and, is almost fully recovered. He’s tough. Little kids just regenerate themselves at a crazy fast rate. I was also calling in for jury duty the last two weeks. Yeah, you might remember me moaning and groaning about this back in January. I was supposed to serve then too, but at the last minute I was granted an extension. I spent the last two weeks calling in twice a day to the on-call-jury-duty-line and was never needed. The kids and I were never able to venture too far from the house, as I had to be ready to run down to the court house at the drop of a hat. It put in wrinkle in our day-to-day but I’m happy that I wasn’t needed, and dodged a bullet on that one. This past weekend was spent with Finn’s old buddy Elsa and her fam at her cabin. The cabin kids had fun catching fish, staying up late, and eating s’mores. Elsa even took a dip in the drink after getting too close to the edge of the boat. Us grown ups had fun too, eating to our hearts content, drinking beers and playing cards. Needless to say we’ve been busy! Still planning […]

My little Finn Bear isn’t so little anymore. Yesterday he finished up his last day of preschool for the year, and this mom just can’t believe it. I am so proud of him and happy for him. He’s has grown so much over the last nine months and has a hunger for learning; it really makes me burst with pride. His teacher was sweet and put together this amazing book for all the kids of their individual progress over the year. It highlights some of the skills he’s improved since the fall, like writing his name and cutting out shapes. She also included a lot of great photos of the special days at school like; Halloween, Wacky Wednesday, Pajama Day, Valentines, and class field trips. It’s all stuff I knew was happening but didn’t get to witness first person. I’m glad to have some insight into his new world. Plus, it’s gonna be the greatest keepsake as Finn gets older. Finn is going to be 5 in July which puts him right on the edge for attending Kindergarten next fall, we also have the option of waiting until he’s 6 the following year. We’ve decided to wait, he still gets tired often throughout the day and needs to rest or take a nap. I think all-day Kindergarten would take a lot out of him, afternoon preschool is just his pace for right now. Plus, we thought it might be an advantage to be the older kid as he gets closer to puberty and all that cool stuff. He’ll be heading back to preschool next fall, and I know it will be the perfect place for him in the coming year. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Finn and I held off as long as we could, this time last year we were already knee deep in seeds and plants were sprouting up like mad in our yard. Now, I know last year was a rare occurrence, I know it’s not going to be 70º all the time in March, but I also don’t expect it to be 5º on the first day of spring either. This is torturous. Combine this crappy and cold spring weather with our ongoing sickness battle and I am 110% over it. So, just because we’re not done with this fight, we continue in our annual tradition and make our 2013 veggie garden map. It gives us something to do for a few hours while we wait for any sign of the snow to melt. Finn and I are very calculated about this process. We have to figure out exactly how much of each veggie goes in each square in our garden to ensure proper growing, plus we have to pick the perfect placement. Root veggies on one side, herbs over here, cucumbers next to the fence so they can grow up and vine, and lettuces flank the sides of the bigger stuff; kale, chard, peas, and beans. We did make a few changes from last year, we left out the broccoli, tomatoes, and peppers in favor of some hardier shade loving leaf veggies. I’ve got high hopes for this little garden. We ordered all of our seeds for Park Seed, last week and they just arrived in the mail. I’m anxious to get my early spring seeds in the ground, now I just need this snow to melt. I mean seriously, this is dumb already. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

I don’t think I mentioned that Elsa has headed off to daily preschool after spending weekdays at our house for the last year and a half. We are so happy for her and her new life adventures, but we miss her like crazy! Last weekend Finn and his old bud were reunited for the first time in a few weeks. Elsa had received multiple pairs of ice skates for Christmas gifts and she needed to share them with Finn. The kids headed out to the local park to give ice skating a try last Saturday. Minneapolis parks are awesome and provide skates and trainer bars for free, it’s pretty tyte of them. Elsa is an old pro at this skating thing and was doing double lutz axels and triple salchows (totally had to google that spelling) all over the place. This was Finn’s first time and although he wasn’t doing any cool spins he was making his way around the rink. They seriously both did great, and can’t wait to go again. It makes me happy to see these guys together. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Minnesotans like to talk about the weather. When it’s snowy and cold we complain and grumble about it, and when’s it’s unseasonably warm for the entire winter (like it was last year) we feel like we got away with murder but are a little sad that we didn’t get to play in the snow. It’s been almost two years since we got to experience the excitement of a real Minnesota snow storm and we’ve missed it like crazy! Bring it on winter weather! It was forecasted to snow a few inches this weekend starting Saturday night, a few inches turned into over a foot of snow in 24 hours. The fam and I got outside and enjoyed the weather yesterday afternoon. Finn made a snow fort and threw a few snow balls and Gus had his first experience with real snow. We’re so happy that the snow is here to stay, but I give it 6 weeks before I start the countdown to spring. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

If you follow along on Instagram (@scoopers) and Facebook you already know that something big happened at our house yesterday; Finn went off to his first day of preschool. I’m so amped for this new phase of his life to start, and he is too. He’s only expressed excitement about going and anxiety doesn’t seem to be a word in his vocabulary. I didn’t even get a “goodbye” when I dropped him off, as soon as he hung his backpack on his hook he was off to enter a whole new world. I was proud of him for that and I didn’t get choked up one bit, I’m proud of me for that. I’m not that tough though, ask me about Pajama Day sometime. Share this...
Don’t mind this messy face No-Shirt-Kids make me happy. We’ve had a great summer and I’m already feeling like it’s over. We had a cool bit of weather last week and it kicked me straight into fall mode. I am really looking forward to being cozy this fall but I don’t want the summer to be over just yet. I’m sure we have a good 3-4 weeks in front of us, but I can’t help but feel like it’s over. Anyway’s, I love these summertime kids (and Elsa too). This summer the house has been full of lots of happy kids sounds. Imaginations are running wild, and even Gus is getting in on the action. Finn has been the best-ever older brother! If all of us had awesome older brothers like Finn we would increase our childhood-good-memories quota by half. There has also been a fair share of pushing, shoving, pointing fingers, fake cries, blaming, bugging, picking on, and driving one mom totally batty. Luckily the good days out weigh the bad, and this summer will be one of my favs on record. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Holy moly! I don’t know about you but it’s hot here with highs pushing 100º all week. We’ve got the pool set up and sprinklers are ready. Obviously when it’s this hot I need (and you do too) a delicious cocktail to cool down. I came up with this impromptu summer drink when I realized there was an abundance of Basil and Mint in the garden and a lack of gin drinks in my hand. What I discovered was a pretty delicious and refreshing cocktail and I thought I should probably share it with you. Scoops’ Refreshing Basil & Mint Gin Cocktail ▼ 2 oz Gin ▼ 1 oz Basil & Mint infused Simple Syrup ▼ 1 oz Fresh Lemon Juice Shake with ice. Pour over fresh ice. Garnish with Basil and Mint sprigs Basil & Mint Simple Syrup ▼ 1 cup Water ▼ 1 cup Sugar ▼ Handful of fresh Mint and Basil (from the garden is best!) In small saucepan bring water, sugar and herbs to a boil. Turn off heat and let steep for 1 hour, then transfer to fridge and let cool for another hour. Use a colander to separate herbs from syrup. Now that you’ve got your cocktail you can really start to enjoy the day. P.S. Here’s a few pics from our weekend. Finn is part fish and won’t get out of the pool. Gus has some new badass teeth. He’s working with the uppers and lowers now. What a crazy animal. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Oh how time flies! My little big guy Finn is on his way to his first week of pre-school. He’s out at Grandma & Grandpa’s house (aka Grammy camp) and is going off to school every morning. He’s more than thrilled about it. I’m so proud that he’s approaching life in such an eager way. I know when I was his age, going to school without my mom was terrifying. Not only that, the pressure to make new friends kept me awake at night. I was a little ball of anxiety even back then. To Finn, anything is possible and nothing causes him worry. He’s just ready to dive right in. So proud of my little dude. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

I’ve been enjoying life at kid speed these days. Now that the winter is officially behind us there has been so much time to enjoy the outside!! I’m already dreading having to go back indoors when the fall comes around again. Last week we had some good adventures, I hope that this is just a glimpse of what is to come for the rest of the summer. The mercury touched 80º once or twice last week and the kids went straight to the backyard to break in the sprinkler. On Thursday we enjoyed a post thunderstorm rain walk followed by a fierce “stick racing to the sewer drain” competition. We topped it off with a lazy Friday in a backyard-blanket-fort. Things are pretty nice these days. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Happy Monday everybody! How was your weekend? Our weekend was one of those gross sick weekends. We got nailed on Friday with a spring cold. We tried to salvage our weekend yesterday afternoon by heading out to one of our favorite MPLS spots, Minnehaha Falls. I attempted to get a nice photo of the boys, but Finn is totally nuts and thinks it’s hilarious to be crazy and weird. Gus & his Dad, snotty nose and all. Minnehaha falls is full of natural splendor, but really the main draw is Sea Salt Eatery. Fish tacos and beer, does it get any better? This will lift anyones sick spirits. *Believe it or not, this was the first outing the Allen’s have had as a foursome. It only took 9 months. Yay for progress! Share this...
My prayers have been answered. Spring really did come early to Minnesota this year. Last weekend was one of the greatest in a long time all thanks to the amazing weather. Friday day we walked to the park in t-shirts! Friday night we drank beers and ate grilled chicken tacos outside on the patio table by candle light. Sunday Finn ran through the sprinkler. It didn’t take long for Finn to remember how awesome it is to pee in the backyard either, we are bad parents, I know. The weekend was accompanied by quite a few brews too. Looking forward to a spring full of amazing weekends. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter
