Hey Friends. I’m gonna talk a bit about the Allen fam today. Some of you may have noticed that I’m not posting as frequently as I was a few months ago. There’s a good reason for that: our youngest Gus has been taking up a lot of my days. We’ve been taking trips to the zoo, visiting the library, going to IKEA for fun, running errands together, you name it. Now that his older brother is at kindergarten every day it has been nice having some one-on-one time together, and we’ve had a blast. I’ve been so happy to have this time with him and I’m glad to see him learning and growing every day. Around Gus’ 3rd birthday we noticed that his language skills were not quite where most 3-year olds typically are, this fall we sought out the developmental specialists at the Minneapolis school district. After many meetings and evaluations with Gus, they informed us that that Gus is on the Autism Spectrum. It was a shock and a surprise, and then it also wasn’t. Like I said, his language skills have been slow to fill in (although they are always improving). He has a hard time in social situations with people he doesn’t know; he’s super shy and covers his face when introduced to new situations. Also, he is kind of obsessed with trains. He loves talking about trains, playing with toy trains, reading books about trains, wearing PJs with trains on them, you name it. Having hyper-focused interests is a common thread with autism. He is also incredibly loving, affectionate, kind, sweet, snuggly, funny (very funny) and smart. He loves his brother Finn and idolizes him. He loves to wrestle his dad, demanding nightly roughhousing sessions before bed. And he’s got that having your mom wrapped around your little finger thing figured out. After spending time with people he warms up to them very well. You know you’ve broken the seal with Gus when he starts tickling you – that’s his way of showing you that he’s interested in being your friend. As a family we are slowly trying to figure out what this diagnosis means for us. We are very positive about having a plan for Gus. He is starting preschool (today!) specifically designed for young kids on the Autism Spectrum, and the goal is to have him ready to enter Kindergarten in a few […]

We spent Tuesday celebrating our little guy, Gus’ 3rd birthday! If you haven’t been keeping track, that’s 2 birthdays in less than 2 weeks. We’ve been busy! It’s always been very important for me to give the kids killer birthdays that are each their own special day, even though they share birthdays so close together. Me and my young bro have birthdays that are 3 days apart, so I understand the importance of separate birthdays. Not wanting to impose on our friends and family during the busy summer days, I invited everyone over for two very casual birthday celebraishes in the back yard, both took place on weekday nights as not to clog anyones weekend. Anyways, back to our little G-man and the 3rd anniversary of the day of his birth. We spent part of the day at the train museum in St. Paul – Gus totally loves this place, and is infatuated with anything that has wheels. The museum is located in an old railroad building and boasts a miniature model of Minneapolis and St.Paul, pretty cool huh? We watched the trains go around, and around, and around, pretty exciting stuff for a three year old. Later in the day we had the fam and a few friends over for cake, ice cream, bubbles, glow sticks, and a train party in the backyard. It was a pretty happy day for our little guy. It’s bittersweet to watch the smallest one grow up but I am so excited for Gus to keep on growing and learning! Finn starts all day kindergarten this year and I am secretly (and not so secretly) super amped to have the next year to spend a bunch of one-on-one time tramping around with my not-so-little-guy, Gus.
Oh man! It downpoured for 15 minutes late yesterday afternoon, and as soon as the rain was over the kids went out to splash in some puddles. Typically they like to truck through the puddles at a million miles an hour trying to make as much sweet spray as they can. They like me to take videos of them so they can see how cool it/they look(s). So I obliged, I ran inside to get my phone because that’s how I take videos (duh). I used to use my camera to capture moments, but now I use my always-at-the-ready phone. Isn’t that so lame? I mean it’s good in a pinch, but I’ve really come to rely on it. Sitting on my desk was my phone and my camera, guess which one I grabbed – I bet you can already tell by these pics. I used my camera! I love all these photos I took of them puddle stompin’ – I realized I would really like to try and get my camera out in the action a bit more. Aren’t these kids getting so big? They are going to be six and three this month and I wish I would have taken the time to document more of the last year on my real camera. It’s on. I’m going to do better! Share this...
Gus is 2 today! Yesterday we celebrated our happy (and newly mulletless) 2 year old with a BBQ in the backyard! I really can’t believe that my little guy is 2. Just crazy. It was so much fun watching Gus enjoy his day. In our family, Finn’s personality often overshadows Gus’, and Gus spends most of his time in the shadow of his big bro and is actually perfectly happy playing that role. To see the spotlight solely on him yesterday afternoon was super special. Once Gus realized that he was the little dude of honor at the party -that the balloons cake and hot dogs were all for him- he basked in all the birthday glory. Of course, that was a tough pill for Finn to swallow, but he got over it. I mean, how could you not get over it when Gus needed his help operating a new remote control car? Finn was happy to assist and jumped right back in as the role of happy older brother, well versed in the art of being a kid. Happy Birthday Gus! We love you so much, and are so happy for you! Thanks to my awesome neighbor for contributing some of the photos in today’s post Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

A Little Dude with a Broken Leg and some Cabin Kidz at Dusk Well guys, and so begins the craziness of July. This is typically a busy month most everyone in the world, because it’s the best part of the whole summer! Always packed full of weddings, vacations, holidays, and BBQ’s. For me, that craziness is doublefied. I’ve got two very important dudes in my life having two very important 5th and 2nd birthdays less than 2 weeks apart. Let the craziness begin. Besides feeling very overwhelmed by the birthday activities coming up in the next few weeks, we also have a vacation planned in the middle of it all. You should see all the lists in my life right now, they are the only thing that keeps me sane. Oh yeah, my guy Gus decided that wrestling his older brother is really cool, and my guy Finn decided that wrestling his baby brother was a really good way to take out pent up older-brother-agression. The result was a broken leg and a day spent in the urgent care last week. Gus is the smiliest broken leg guy there is (even though the above photo doesn’t show it) and, is almost fully recovered. He’s tough. Little kids just regenerate themselves at a crazy fast rate. I was also calling in for jury duty the last two weeks. Yeah, you might remember me moaning and groaning about this back in January. I was supposed to serve then too, but at the last minute I was granted an extension. I spent the last two weeks calling in twice a day to the on-call-jury-duty-line and was never needed. The kids and I were never able to venture too far from the house, as I had to be ready to run down to the court house at the drop of a hat. It put in wrinkle in our day-to-day but I’m happy that I wasn’t needed, and dodged a bullet on that one. This past weekend was spent with Finn’s old buddy Elsa and her fam at her cabin. The cabin kids had fun catching fish, staying up late, and eating s’mores. Elsa even took a dip in the drink after getting too close to the edge of the boat. Us grown ups had fun too, eating to our hearts content, drinking beers and playing cards. Needless to say we’ve been busy! Still planning […]

Our little guy Gus has become a bit obsessed with drawing recently. I’m surprised by this because although Finn likes to draw, he was never really into drawing in a non-stop-over-a-period-of-days-with-only-eating-and-sleeping-as-your-only-other-activities sort of a way. I’ve never seen a kid so into something like this, he watches his hand make the marks and he tears through paper like nobody’s business. I guess I’m lucky he’s only drawing on paper, I’ve gone through about a whole ream in the last 2 days. I’m excited to see him so into something, but the insistant need for crayons and paper is getting a litte OOC (aka “out of control”). In other news, it’s snowing, and it’s supposed to keep snowing until there is like a foot of snow. Do you guys know how sad this makes me? It’s soul crushing, and I’m not even being over dramatic about it. I find it hard to have the will to do much of anything on days like today. I’m still sitting in my PJ’s. I probably will switch to leggings (aka day time PJ’s) when it’s time to take Finn to school, but under my jacket will be all jams. I have wool socks on, this is the worst. I hate Minnesota right now, and I am desperate for spring. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Gus suffers from the same hair style that his bro did at his age: he keeps it all business in the front, and party in the back. He’s like Joe Dirt. Out in public or hanging with friends, we’ll occasionally get comments on that mullet. Things like “cool hockey hair”, “hey kid, nice beaver paddle”, and “awesome ape drape, little buddy.” That tyte mullet is obviously the first thing total strangers notice about him. Despite all this, I love that little wisp of hair so much. It’s soft and curly, and it’s the last little bit of hair he was born with. You know that those curls will never come back the second I cut them off. Please don’t make me cut the mullet. I love it so! It’s totally obvious that this problem is mine and mine alone. It’s just a sign of me not wanting my baby (and most likely my last baby) to be a kid just yet. That’s normal, right? He may keep this mullet until he’s 40 if I get my way. Share this...
I don’t know about you, but we’ve been working hard on our Valentine’s over at Casa La Allen. It is Finn’s 1st official V-Day at school this year and he is responsible for bringing a Valentine (or as I like to say “Valentimes”) for each one of his classmates. Making Valentines involves a lot of stress and excitement for Finn, because he’s a ball of anxiety just like his mom. He was desperate to learn exactly how we were going to make Valentines for all his buddies having never done it before. Not to worry little man, mom’s got you covered. We have a decent amount of craft and art supplies around our house, and all I knew was that we were going to make these things ourselves, obviously. Finn’s has a limited attention span when it comes to arts and crafts and I wanted him to feel like he contributed to each one of these Valentine’s. So I thought of the easiest thing I could possibly think of; painting coffee filters with water colors. It’s hard to screw this up (even if your 4) and it has a pretty cool tie dyed effect. Gus was even able to help his bro out and we had 20 filters painted and set to dry within half an hour. Last night we headed over to the craft store for some small bags and some goodies for his classmates including some super cute heart erasers. Today we are addressing and filling bags, and mom is helping punch holes, cutting hearts and tying them on with bakers twine. We’re a pretty efficient little machine.
Minnesotans like to talk about the weather. When it’s snowy and cold we complain and grumble about it, and when’s it’s unseasonably warm for the entire winter (like it was last year) we feel like we got away with murder but are a little sad that we didn’t get to play in the snow. It’s been almost two years since we got to experience the excitement of a real Minnesota snow storm and we’ve missed it like crazy! Bring it on winter weather! It was forecasted to snow a few inches this weekend starting Saturday night, a few inches turned into over a foot of snow in 24 hours. The fam and I got outside and enjoyed the weather yesterday afternoon. Finn made a snow fort and threw a few snow balls and Gus had his first experience with real snow. We’re so happy that the snow is here to stay, but I give it 6 weeks before I start the countdown to spring. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Don’t mind this messy face No-Shirt-Kids make me happy. We’ve had a great summer and I’m already feeling like it’s over. We had a cool bit of weather last week and it kicked me straight into fall mode. I am really looking forward to being cozy this fall but I don’t want the summer to be over just yet. I’m sure we have a good 3-4 weeks in front of us, but I can’t help but feel like it’s over. Anyway’s, I love these summertime kids (and Elsa too). This summer the house has been full of lots of happy kids sounds. Imaginations are running wild, and even Gus is getting in on the action. Finn has been the best-ever older brother! If all of us had awesome older brothers like Finn we would increase our childhood-good-memories quota by half. There has also been a fair share of pushing, shoving, pointing fingers, fake cries, blaming, bugging, picking on, and driving one mom totally batty. Luckily the good days out weigh the bad, and this summer will be one of my favs on record. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

We celebrated August’s 1st birthday this weekend with cake and ice cream in the backyard. The poor dude had just come down with a cold that morning and was sick for his own bday celebraish. Luckily Finn and Elsa were there and happy to blow out candles, eat cake and open presents on his behalf. I’ve been overly sentimental in a mom sort of way for Gus’ first bday. I am so happy for Gus, so glad he’s been a healthy baby. He’s been such a joy and such a wonderful addition to our fam. I’m also so proud of his brother for hanging in there through all the challenges of having a new baby brother. I feel thankful that I have such a great family and such a great 1 year old! Happy Birthday Gus! Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Holy moly! I don’t know about you but it’s hot here with highs pushing 100º all week. We’ve got the pool set up and sprinklers are ready. Obviously when it’s this hot I need (and you do too) a delicious cocktail to cool down. I came up with this impromptu summer drink when I realized there was an abundance of Basil and Mint in the garden and a lack of gin drinks in my hand. What I discovered was a pretty delicious and refreshing cocktail and I thought I should probably share it with you. Scoops’ Refreshing Basil & Mint Gin Cocktail ▼ 2 oz Gin ▼ 1 oz Basil & Mint infused Simple Syrup ▼ 1 oz Fresh Lemon Juice Shake with ice. Pour over fresh ice. Garnish with Basil and Mint sprigs Basil & Mint Simple Syrup ▼ 1 cup Water ▼ 1 cup Sugar ▼ Handful of fresh Mint and Basil (from the garden is best!) In small saucepan bring water, sugar and herbs to a boil. Turn off heat and let steep for 1 hour, then transfer to fridge and let cool for another hour. Use a colander to separate herbs from syrup. Now that you’ve got your cocktail you can really start to enjoy the day. P.S. Here’s a few pics from our weekend. Finn is part fish and won’t get out of the pool. Gus has some new badass teeth. He’s working with the uppers and lowers now. What a crazy animal. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

I rarely call my kids by their actual names. I have a thing for nicknames if you haven’t picked up on that. Finn has been “Finn Bear” aka “Bear” (like Bear Grylls… not) since the day he was born. When Gus was born I started calling him “Bear” too but I realized very quickly that it didn’t really make a lot of sense. I already had one bear, I didn’t need another. So Gus had to live life without a nickname for awhile until he proved his worth to the nickname gods. As Gus got older he started making weird hissing breathing sounds when he got super excited. Before we knew it he was officially “Gus the Goose.” So what does that have to do with the picture above? Back in 2007 our friend Aaron Anderson (aka McTubbins) made us a family crest. At that point it was just the two of us. The crest has made it’s home over our bed ever since. Then, we added Finn to the family. For his 1st birthday our friend Laura Olson (aka Laurax) gave Finn a small little drawing of a bear. It was destined to be part of our family wall and the drawing made it’s home above our bed directly under the crest. Then Gus showed up, and we made no changes to our family tree (we are total jerks). Just recently, I worked with Laurax on a bloggy project. She’s going to join the Peace Corp next month and is being relocated to Cambodia, (crazy!). She needed a blog stat, duh. So using all my blogging wizardry I helped her create a blog on blogger. It looks good and is ready to be filled with stories and drawings of her crazy adventures. So what does that have to do with “Gus the Goose”? I’m getting there, okay. Laura presented me with this sweet drawing at our last blog meeting. A little gosling for my wall. And now the trifecta is complete, and our family tree looks awesome! Share this...
I’ve been enjoying life at kid speed these days. Now that the winter is officially behind us there has been so much time to enjoy the outside!! I’m already dreading having to go back indoors when the fall comes around again. Last week we had some good adventures, I hope that this is just a glimpse of what is to come for the rest of the summer. The mercury touched 80º once or twice last week and the kids went straight to the backyard to break in the sprinkler. On Thursday we enjoyed a post thunderstorm rain walk followed by a fierce “stick racing to the sewer drain” competition. We topped it off with a lazy Friday in a backyard-blanket-fort. Things are pretty nice these days. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

It was my intention when I started this post to update you on some functional storage solutions that I had come up with for my little guy’s little nursery. Then I decided that maybe it would be more helpful for any future moms out there to give you my two cents about how the nursery functions. What I like, what I don’t, what I’ve changed and what I’ve added over the last year. A Sorry Excuse For a Photo. First of all, earlier this week it looked like a onesie explosion up in here. I quickly ran out of storage for the little dude when Finn outgrew ALL of his clothes and Gus was not ready to grow into them yet. Plus I had an over-flowing pile of onesies and baby outfits that Gus was just outgrowing. This space needed some severe tidying ASAP. I went out and got a new Malm dresser from IKEA and put it in the back of his closet under his hanging clothes. It matches the other dresser in his room but is slightly shorter. We got the three drawer style for the closet instead of four. I figure if he ever wants move the dresser into his bedroom area when he’s older it will match his other chest of drawers. This dresser is solely for all of the clothes that Finn has outgrown and is waiting for Gus to grow into. It’s all organized by size and type – shorts, pants, long and short sleevers. So glad I finally did this, I should’ve done it a long time ago. It feels good to be organized. I also just recently ordered up Gus this cool ombre-esque crushable yellow hamper. I know, I know: one year deep and no hamper? We did so much of Gus’ changing downstairs on the living room floor or up in our bedroom that it really wasn’t super necessary for him to have his own hamper until just recently. Other things to note about this closet set up: there is a pile of Bum Genius cloth diapers on top of that dresser and as of last week they are no longer being used. What happened? Gus recently started peeing through them constantly and no matter what method or approach I tried I just couldn’t lessen the times per day that I changed his diaper along with his entire outfit. Now let […]

Happy Monday everybody! How was your weekend? Our weekend was one of those gross sick weekends. We got nailed on Friday with a spring cold. We tried to salvage our weekend yesterday afternoon by heading out to one of our favorite MPLS spots, Minnehaha Falls. I attempted to get a nice photo of the boys, but Finn is totally nuts and thinks it’s hilarious to be crazy and weird. Gus & his Dad, snotty nose and all. Minnehaha falls is full of natural splendor, but really the main draw is Sea Salt Eatery. Fish tacos and beer, does it get any better? This will lift anyones sick spirits. *Believe it or not, this was the first outing the Allen’s have had as a foursome. It only took 9 months. Yay for progress! Share this...
My prayers have been answered. Spring really did come early to Minnesota this year. Last weekend was one of the greatest in a long time all thanks to the amazing weather. Friday day we walked to the park in t-shirts! Friday night we drank beers and ate grilled chicken tacos outside on the patio table by candle light. Sunday Finn ran through the sprinkler. It didn’t take long for Finn to remember how awesome it is to pee in the backyard either, we are bad parents, I know. The weekend was accompanied by quite a few brews too. Looking forward to a spring full of amazing weekends. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter
