Friendthrens. I tell ya, the only downside to having a cabin is not being able to give respect due to the gardens. They are thriving this year, but they are in desp need of some cleaning up. I have to actually schedule time in my calendar to hang out with them. I wouldn't change a thing, but I do miss toiling over them, and I hope I still get a chance to this summer...

Backyard Okay budz! This is late, but a very true and accurate post. I took these garden pics at the end of June and have been sitting on them for two weeks. Things continue to be C R A Z Y ! in our summer life. I am trying to be as zen as possible about the purchasing of the cabin, but we are coming down to the final two weeks and there is so much to do and organize. Thankfully, the excitement of it all helps to push me through, but there are for sure times where I feel like I’m about to lose my god damn mind. After weeks of neglecting the garden because of our busy summer schedule, I have found that in the chaos it is still my chill spot. I was able to spend a few hours this weekend weeding, and I swear it takes my stress level down a few notches. There is still lots more to do, and I hope I can get back at it later this week. That being said, can I just talk about weeding for a sec? I know it sounds like a real shitty no-fun job, but it really isn’t too bad. You can instantly transform your garden bed in a matter of minutes with a quick weeding. This is true instant gratification, ma friends! I also highly recommend trimming back stuff that doesn’t look good. I think a lot of newbie gardeners think that the garden is like this precious little thing that can’t be touched, but seriously it can be. While weeding I deadheaded all my iris, cut back the undergrowth, trimmed my salvia (which encourages a second bloom). Also don’t forget, if your hostas are looking unruly you can trim them too. I spent some time and trimmed off the under layer of all my hostas which makes a really clean look along borders – use the trimmed hosta leaves for a hosta bouquet when you’re done. You might be able to see the effects in some of the below photos. Also, it should be noted that you can trim off hosta flowers too. I think some of them are very pretty and orchid like (I let those ones stay), but the purple spindly ones, not so much. I always chop those things off right away. Rose Bush This is my ‘Music Box’ rose […]

Ruby Tears Crab Apple I know, I know! It’s June 7th, and here I am with my May Garden post. Believe me when I say, that I have taken all of these photos throughout the month of May, no June pics included here :). It’s always mind blowing how much can change can happen in just one month – seriously not only in the garden but in life too, ya know! The garden was barely popping through at the end of April, and to see all my perennials come back to life over the last few weeks has been amazing. This is always my favorite month of the garden. I’m bummed that I never got photos of the dogwoods flowering, it was cold and rainy when they were at there peak only 10 days ago, and I never managed to make it outside to snap a few pics. Take my word that they looked super great. The garden is already feeling unruly this year, I haven’t gotten through my first good weeding of the season. The boulevard is begging me to get out there, and there is still mulching to do too. I usually have this stuff done right away, I’m really doing a bad job this year. We’ve had an extreme start of the season with the whole cabin hunting whirlwind thing. I’ve got some time over the next few days and I hope to give it some extra TLC – it will be whipped back in to shape in no time, proms. I actually kind of like weeding, as long as I can find a shady spot to do it in. The kids are out of school next Wednesday and thus begins a summer full of kids, kids, and more kids. I look forward to it, but it’s definitely a change of pace. We dive (pun always intended) right into morning swimming lessons at the beach a few days after they get out, I’ll have four kids under my wing so wish me luck. My head is spinning with cabin plans, and I hope to be back to share a few ideas I’ve got bouncing around in ma brain. Stay tuned. Veggie Garden Peony Sun Garden Caradonna Salvia Finn and Gus’ favorite plant. Iris I Iris II Iris III Iris IV Patio Climbing Rose Crossing my fingers that […]

Pagoda Dogwood Welp guys, there was a lot of death in my garden this year. This is strange to me since we didn’t have a worse than normal winter, it was actually a whole lot warmer than normal. A lot of perennial root systems seemed to turn to mush, and I can only imagine that it most likely had something to do with that warmer-than-usual-weather thing that the world has been experiencing. I lost my lupine, my Japanese maple, a peony, my perennial thyme, a heuchera, some ornamental grasses, the allium, a foxglove, and my rose bush took a beating – nearly all of these were in their second or third seasons so not well established in my yard yet. Anyways, I wanted to share and see if any of you local gardeners are experiencing the same destruction in your garden or if this is exclusive to just my garden in which case if it is, I’m in trouble. I also wanted to share this destruction with the folks who are feeling like you have a black thumb – please know that this gardening process is a whole lot of trial and error, experimentation, and plant murder. You learn by testing out different plants and take from that the knowledge of what works and doesn’t in your garden. Sometimes it’s just out of your control too, and you have to mourn the loss of some plants and move on. Above you can see my dead Japanese Maple, it died because of an unrelated fungus that plagues my soil and kills Japanese maples. This is the second maple I’ve lost and it’s too expensive of a tree to risk repeating again. I am now going to replace that dead maple with a pagoda dogwood. We already have three dogwoods in our yard but they are the bushier variety. I get a lot of questions about them and that’s because they don’t really look like your typical bushy dogwood. You can see a picture of them in bloom over here. I have two that sit next to the garage and one on the side of the house. When we moved in they were cut all the way back to the ground and when they starting fiercely popping through the soil and growing at a super fast rate, I had no idea what to do. At this point I didn’t even know what […]

Here we are, the last garden post of the summer. This year, I can honestly say that I am ready for the fall to come, and for that big autumnal change to happen. Not only am I ready for the colder fall days ahead, but this season change signifies big change for my day-to-day world. Finn started school last week, and today is Gus’ first day at his new school. Life will be different around here. I have time in my days now to begin to focus on the house, this blog, and to begin the process of figuring out how I will define myself in the future days, weeks and months as my full-time mom job winds down. I’m excited. Okay, so garden stuff. The garden is all ready for the fall, some of the hostas have begun to yellow and I can tell chilly days are right around the corner. Somewhere around the beginning of August I give up on weeding and caring too much about the routine maintenance of gardening. I set timers for the sprinklers and I mow less often, we begin to spend less and less time in the backyard and more time on the porch, as we can all sense that the summer is winding down. I had some successes this summer, and some fails. The Vanilla Strawberry peegee hydrangea tree has been a great addition to the gardens, adding height and color nearly all summer long. I was also pleasantly surprised by my rose bush, it responded well to not being cut back last fall, and as a result, is huge this year. I had a rough year with my veggie garden, and I know I’ll be reading up over the winter trying to figure strategies for gardening next year. I’m considering using plants from the nursery as opposed to sowing from seed in the spring, I’d love to hear pros and cons of this if you have experience. I have ideas of adding one more sunny vegetable bed in the spot on the side of the house where the orange day lilies are now. The day lilies burn out towards the end of the summer and I think tomatoes or peppers might benefit from the space better than the lilies. The soaker hose irrigation system sprung a leak early on and I never felt confident leaving it on a timer (in fear […]

Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangea I can not even believe that it’s time to share my July Garden. Holy smokes, what a summer! It’s especially been a great summer for the kids, which is what I had hoped for, I think they’ve enjoyed it, and I feel insane. Like I’ve said, August is gonna rip in the not-having-much-to-do department. My goal for this years gardening season was to focus on having more late summer blooming flowers, and I think I’ve done a pretty good job of doing just that. There is always tweaking that needs to be done, but it feels like it’s getting there. Last year I planted two Clematis on the fence hoping to fill in the gaps where we can see clearly into the neighbors yard. Last year the Clematis bloomed once and then nothing, I was disappointed because it was advertised as a continuous bloomer. This year the Clematis bloomed in the spring and then nothing, and I was bummed yet again. Hold up! Just this week I noticed that they are re-blooming, uh, Yay-yer! Also, as a note to myself : Scoops, one of your Clematis is struggling, so make sure not to pull it out this fall or next spring, k? I added a climbing rose to the garden which I am super excited about. I planted it near our Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangea tree, and am hoping to train it to grow back along the fence. We have a concrete pad near our garage and there isn’t much dirt-for-growing-things available along the fence because of it, so I’m really hoping this rose does the task of filling in. The rose will be most prolific in the mid-late spring and then will re-bloom sporadically throughout the summer. Oh, and did I mention that it has the prettiest light peach colored flowers? I also planted some Astilbe, this will be my second attempt at growing Astilbe in my garden, I don’t know what I am doing wrong, but they just don’t seem happy in my yard. I planted 5 new plants, three of which are this barely pink Delft Lace variety and two of which are a smaller raspberry colored variety. All of the plants leaves are browning and curling and I think they all hate me. I guess we’ll see what next spring brings. If they do come back, they will be blooming in July and August, […]

Window Boxes Guys! July is the craziest month for me, I know I haven’t blogged in like 2 weeks, I know I’ve had photos sitting on my camera for nearly as long. My boys both have birthdays this month, combined with long holiday weekends and cabin adventures, theres just no time left to say “whazzup” to you dudes. I hope you are all doing well and enjoying the summer timez. Things are going pretty great over here at casa Allen. I’m typing this from the beach – My weekday mornings have been spent watching the kids take swimming lessons. Like I mentioned in the last post, I’ve been working like crazy trying to get my house ready for the fine folks from Do It Yourself Magazine to come and photograph our home for a feature that will be coming out in January (!!!!). They will be here next week, so things are totally nutzo right now. We spent a long weekend with my folks, brother and sister-in-law, at this tiny but very sweet cabin in Northwestern Wisconsin. Many beers were drank, bodies were swam, and fish were caught. We packed it all in! Things have been good. Anyways, gardens. They are a thing. I’m always surprised how much they can change depending on conditions from year-to-year, and I’ve been really happy that I’ve kept this annual summer gardening diary up. It has really helped to enhance my gardening game, and I suggest my gardening budz out there to do the same — even if it’s not actually on the internet. The major blooming plants are almost done for the year. I just went shopping and grabbed a few more July-August bloomers because my gardening goal for this season was to fill in the later summer perennials. The flowering Hydrangea tree I planted this spring turned out to be a good idea! It’s just starting to flower and it looks so pretty in the backyard. I highly recommend for anyone looking for a summer flower with height :) All grown from Seed Both these Impatiens and Petunias were all sowed indoors! Impatiens Strawberry & Cream Hydrangea This is that Hydrangea tree I was talking about. The flower should turn pink later in the summer and they will stay blooming into the early fall. Strawberry & Cream Hydrangea Shade Garden This is the shadier side of the […]

Ruby Tears Crab Apple I know I’m a little late on the May Garden post, but I promise, I took these photos right at the end of the month. It actually works out really nicely that this post got pushed back because it lands on my favorite gardener’s birthday, my Ma (aka SugarMommaD)! She has instilled in me the love of gardening and nurturing schtuff, and she’s so fortunate to be able to celebrate her birthday during the most perfect and beautiful time of the gardening season. Love ya, mom! The above and below pics are of our other Ruby Tears crabapple tree (aka Gus’ Tree), it flowered the second week of May, but I had to include it because it makes the backyard look super amazing. Also, I’m having trouble with ‘Apple Scab’ on my other Spring Snow crab apple in our front yard, I guess this is common to happen after the tree flowers, and this year it was so prolific. I am treating it with a topical spray for now, and am having an arborist come to give me a consultation tomorrow — I am scared for it. Veggie Gardens Radish The veggie garden has been good this year, for the most part I like the irrigation set up. It has sprung a leak once or twice, but it’s really easy to repair. I would prefer it not to spring any leaks, though. Our timer is also kind of junky, one of the timers gets stuck, leaving the water running forever. Eventually I will be investing in a digital timer so that we can set it to water when we go on vacations n’ stuff. The actual veggies are doing great, peas, radishes, carrots, potatoes and greens are thriving. Unfortch, my green beans sprouts have been obliterated by slugs, (eew). I read on the internet, that if I put beer in a pie tin the slugs would want to go drown in it, and it totally worked. There have been no signs of them since. I took a risk and planted my cuc seeds a week or two early, and when we hit a cold snap I botched the germination process, so I am a bit behind the eight ball on that front. All and all, it’s been fun, and the kids like it too. Bearded Iris My grandma gifted me a bunch of […]

Sedum Hey! It’s April garden share time! Right now I am in the thick of getting the flower beds ready for the summer. The spring always seems like a mad dash to edit and rearrange flower beds, divide a few perennials and mulch before the heart (and the heat) of the summer really begin. The front yard and foundation gardens are basically mud since getting our new stoop, and I have been focusing most a lot of my time on getting grass growing and the flower beds whipped back in to shape. After a few rainy weeks, the coming week should allow me lots of time to get the mulching, spring weeding, and maybe even annual containers taken care of. Sunny Garden Bleeding Hearts Bleeding Hearts As I mentioned in my last post, Bleeding Hearts are always the first bloomer in my backyard. They are seriously the best, I love them, and you should too. Lamium Maiden Hair Ferns Astilbe After moving this new addition multiple times around the gardens last year, I was happy to see it survive and come back this spring – it didn’t seem like it was a for sure thing. Shade Garden Vanilla Strawberry Hydragena A brand new addition to the gardens is this Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangea tree. I placed it in the same spot that I had my Japanese Maple that I unfortunately lost last spring. I removed the soil and roots that were in this location and planted this new tree, I’ve got my fingers crossed that it will be happy and healthy here. Japanese Maple After losing the Bloodgood Japanese Maple tree to fungus last spring, I purchased this new Emperor I Japanese Maple and placed it in a different location. It wintered well (I wrapped it in Burlap and buried the base deep in leaves). The leaves come out late in the spring which helps to protect it from potential spring frost. I feel confident that this one will be sticking around for awhile. Lupine Rose Bush Roses are a mystery to me, after cutting this one back for the last three winters I realized that this bush likes to just be left alone, it’s thriving this spring, so I won’t be touching it anymore. Sun / Shade Garden Sun Garden Flower Beds Spring Snow Crabapple […]

Sedum I’m getting so excited that it’s almost garden time. Spring is my favorite time of year, and I am dying to get my hands dirty. I especially love that gardening is one of those things where there is always room for improvement. I couldn’t be happy if it was just done and there was nothing to do or improve upon. I’ve just ordered some soaker hose for irrigation in my raised beds. It’s not a super pro set-up but it will be more sophisticated then what I have going on now. I’m excited to see if this new system will have big effects on this seasons veggie crop. I’m also going to be trying my hand at DIY landscape lighting. Now that the gardens are becoming more mature, I think it’s the perfect time to add lighting, like real-deal grown up lighting. Don’t worry, I’ll post about that too. Also, the front steps will be finally replaced this summer with new concrete steps, which in turn will effect the shape of the surrounding garden beds. Our front steps are a huge embarrassment and have been on our to-do list for years, so to get them taken care of will be a huge relief and a big improvement to the curb appeal of the house. So, things are happening, and this March garden is just the start. I can’t wait to share lots more as the season progresses. Bleeding Hearts Lamium Rose Buds Hosta Day Lilies Heuchera Allium I planted two bulbs last fall and have only seen one so far – still have my fingers crossed. Peony Share this...
Veggies Hello, Friendz! As I mentioned earlier this summer, my garden has had a rough go of it this season. The side garden was torn up and trampled by worker dudes, the veggie garden couldn’t be accessed for maintenance due to piles of dirt next to them, and I lost my Japanese maple. Yes, I am sad to announce that the maple is officially a goner. Happily, I did replace it with a new Empire I Japanese maple and I planted it in a different location. I have my fingers and toes crossed for this one – so far it’s thriving. All of the ups and downs are all part of the gardening adventure, so I try not to feel too bummed out. I’m on the hunt for late summer flowering zone 4 perennials for shade and sun. I’m realizing (and you can tell by the pics) that I don’t have a lot flowering right now. I need to fix that and make a plan for next year. So all you green thumbs out there, let me know what I should be considering for next year’s late-summer-bloomers. A few weeks the hus-bo was out of town for the weekend and I was left to my own devices, I decided to go hard on the veggie garden. I spent the entire day out in the sun, pulling weeds, edging the borders, and replanting peas and leaf lettuce that had become over grown. It all looks kind of pretty now, and spending a full day in the garden made me so happy. The pole beans are growing out of control, we have cucumbers and kale. The carrots are almost ready for harvesting and the potatoes (aka french fries) look like they must be growing well under the soil. Zinnia Zinnias have always been a go to annual plant for me. I always plant them from seed and I love to see them in my sun-loving garden. The Zinnias are not coming in this year like they have in the past. I think that my sun garden perennials are becoming so large that they are shading the seedlings and causing them not to grow as mightily as they have in years past. I’m thinking this will be the last year that I seed them in the sun garden and instead will start seeding them in the small gardens next to the garage […]

huchera It’s been an up and down sort of gardening season. What I thought was going to be a piece-of-cake established garden has been anything but. Things have been dying this year, specifically the Japanese maple, but I also lost phlox, clematis, coneflower, and a few iris. I’ve been replacing what I can here and there, in addition to adding a few new perennials to the mix as well. I’ve replaced the Bloodgood Japanese maple with an Empire I Japanese maple. I planted the new maple in a different location, and have my fingers crossed that it will be so happy in my yard. I adore the foliage of the maple leaves so much I just had to give a new tree a shot. I still have one surviving twig of my Bloodgood Maple and I will monitor it throughout the summer to see how it goes. If I lose it this year I have plans of replacing it with a Peegee hydrangea next spring. I’ve also added Lupine to my partial shade garden, Astilbe to my shade garden, and a new coneflower in my sunny flower bed. It’s exciting to watch it all grow, but I can’t tell you how bummed I get when I watch well established perennials bite it. Mostly I am curious to know why they didn’t survive so I can improve my gardening repertoire in future years, but honestly, I have no idea what I did, or what I can do to prevent it down the road. I still love tending to my gardens everyday. Because of all the basement chaos I’ve been able to give my backyard lots and lots of attention this year. The veggie garden has had to put up with a lot due to the basement demo, and I haven’t been able to work much on the front foundation garden or boulevard as to not get in the basement crews way. It is what it is, and as always, I have plans for next year. I’d love to bump out the front foundation garden a foot or two, and remove all the perennials, and a small berm to elevate the garden and replant it. I think it would really make the front foundation garden look polished and manicured. Hydrangea Bird Bath I Spy a New Tree Hosta & Sedum Astilbe The Kid Zone Petunias […]

Peonies Hope you guys are all having a good hump day. It’s the last week of school for the kiddos so things are about to get buck. Anyway, before the chaos beings let me share my May garden pics with you. I guess I have a thing for purple and pink this year, after seeing all my spring flowering perennials laid out here in my May garden post, it’s pretty obvious. I was so happy to see the gardens this spring, especially since a few of my fav spring flowers (like the white peony above) fell victim to the fence installation last year. Everything is very mature this year, maybe even a bit too mature, like they are totally turning into moody grunge teens (#jokes, I’m not funny). I see some thinning and reorganizing in my future. Clematis In an effort to create even more privacy along the fence I planted two Warsaw Nike Clematis along the fence. They can grow up to 8′ so fingers crossed, they’d be a real nice addition in future years. Salvia Flowering Dogwood New Fountain New backyard addish – found this fountain the winter for a steal of a deal at the garden center – the kids love it. Bloodgood Japanese Maple Ruby Tears Crabapple Iris My Fav Iris. Hostas! Veggie Gardens The garden is having some trouble this year. I think the seeds have been very confused by the extreme temp shifts this spring. Flowering Dogwood The other flowering dogwood, I love them so much. Window Box See, I told you, purple fever.
Bleeding Heart Guys! My hand is still ruined, but I’m not going to stop it from sharing my April garden with you. I still can’t do anything unless I use my left hand only, which has been problematic for a lot of things; like putting your hair in a pony tail, driving, writing to-do lists, and buttering toast. However my left hand still does just fine at getting cocktails to my mouth, so I am learning how to survive. Today I get my cast and will find out how long my sentence in hand-jail will be. Anyway, It’s April garden time and I’m sharing all the pics. The gardens looks super good and lush this year — super stoked about the early spring. I’m dying to mulch, but will have to wait until my husband can help, I will have to use all the willpower not to join in. Hopefully by the May-garden-post my hand will be getting to semi-functional status. My left hand is getting tired of writing to you now, so I’m gonna wrap this up. I’ve appreciated all the comments and words of support that you guys have left in the last post, and I will reply to all of them over the coming week. xo Hostas Dogwood I’m so excited to see the peonies this year, last year a bunch of the tiny stalks got trampled during the fence installation and I didn’t get to see all these pretties.
Sedum Yes, okay, it’s a few days late but I’m happy to share with you my 2nd ever March garden post, and for the record I did snap these photos on the 31st. This is only the second time of the six gardening seasons we’ve had that there have actually been plants popping out of the earth at the end of March. I know what I’m sharing isn’t amazingly beautiful or anything, but in comparison to my April post last year I have similar sized perennials 30 days early. That makes me hopeful that the plants will have a longer season this year, and if you’re a half-glass-full type like me, then essentially spring is coming early and everything is awesome. I’m starting to see tiny leaves on the buds of many of our trees and after the next few days of rain albeit cold rain, things should start greening up! Bleeding Hearts Peonies I’m so excited to see the peonies this year, last year a bunch of the tiny stalks got trampled during the fence installation and I didn’t get to see all these pretties.
Side Garden Hey Guys! I’ve been so busy lately, sorry if I am late to the show on the July Garden. I know it’s August and all, but I promise, all these photos are from July. The garden has been really grown into itself this year. There is always something new blooming, colors look good together and all the plants are nice and filled in. I am really, really proud of it. Let me show you around and you can see what’s blooming this month. Asiatic Lilies There are lilies everywhere! After 4 years the Asiatic lilies are growing in nice mounds now. I originally had been given individual shoots which I planted all around the backyard. Finally the bulbs have multiplied themselves enough times that I know have groups of lilies producing lots and lots of beautiful blooms. Side Garden Purples, blues and yellows along the side garden. Echinacea A new cone flower (aka ‘Fatal Attraction’ Echinacea) which I planted earlier this year. The stems are nearly purple, I totally love them. Rose My rose bush was happily blooming at the beginning of the month, but now there are no more buds. I’m a little worried about it, hopefully it is just a phase. Zinnias The zinnias began blooming right after Finn’s birthday – they took awhile longer this year, I imagine it has something to do with all the rain and the cooler weather we’ve been experiencing. Happy to see them blooming, and am looking forward to having many beautiful garden bouquets from these plants that I started from seed. Asiatic Lilies & Hosta Day Lily I told you, lots of lilies. Here are my yellow day lilies. I split these a few years ago and now they are coming in as nice hearty bushes. Coleus I tried something new this year, planting a large coleus as a border annual plant on the side of the house. I am amazed at how large it has gotten, and would like to try it again next year, maybe in the backyard gardens. Salad Garden I had to include a shot of the lettuce garden. When it first started growing I was worried that it wouldn’t fill in. It looked pretty sad, but now I have so much lettuce and arugula. We can have salads everyday – it’s way awesome! Hydrangea […]

Hanging Basket Hey, Guys! Hope you had a cool weekend, I know we did. We spent it up at the cabin, and I’ll be sharing a few photos in the coming days. Anyways, if you didn’t notice it’s July 1st and it’s time to recap you on my June garden. Lots of things have been happening over the last month in the garden. This year the garden is full sized, some plants are actually bigger that I anticipated them being and I may have to thin a out a few, or even move some around. I already lost a Delphinium because the Hostas were choking it out, and I’ on the verge of losing one of my phlox for the same reason. There has been so much rain that the Hostas are insanely large, I’m talking 3+ feet in diameter. I also have been a bad documenter and have missed taking pics of a few blooms, but I’m hoping to catch what I missed over the month of July. Here’s how things are shaping up this month: Yellow Day Lily What is It? Guys! What the heck is this? It’s the second year it’s appeared in my garden, this time with more vengeance then the last. It’s big, it’s leafs are reminiscent of Wild Geranium or possibly even Anemone but I don’t remember ever planting it. It’s tall, about 3 feet and has what I would describe as layers of leaves. Is it a giant weed or is it actually a real plant? Someone must know. Salvia Petunias These are the petunias I grew from seed, they are large now and starting to hang over the sides of the planters. I would totally grow petunias from seed again, only next time I’d start them in February. Painted Fern Purple Lamium Hosta Flower Certain types of hostas can produce beautiful orchid like flowers – thick, waxy and full of soft detail. Peony Huchera Flower Hydrangea Share this...
Bleeding Heart Friendz! I’m so excited that it’s Friday, and I am even more excited that spring has finally hit the midwest. Like always, we go from cold to hot and steamy in a matter of days, but whatever! I’m just glad it’s jorts weather, ya know?! I’ve been spending a lot of time tidying up the gardens over the last few weeks and I’m excited to share with you a few pics. Things are looking lush, and I love the new fence as a backdrop. I knew that green fence wasn’t pretty but I didn’t realize how much of a difference our new fence would make. So here how things have been shaping up over the last month, it’s crazy how much things have changed in only 30 days. Side Garden Iris Side Garden Weeping Crab Apple Peonies Tulips Dogwoods Solomon’s Seal Crab Apple We planted the crabapple right after we moved in, this will be the fifth year it’s been in our yard. We quickly dubbed it “Finn’s Tree” and have been taking a photo of him in front of it every spring when it’s in bloom. That tree and that kid are getting huge fast!
Jacob’s Ladder Hello from the land of viral pneumonia and snow flurries. The kids and I are all super sick because we just had to end the cold & flu season with one more major illness. We started spring with a bang, and by bang I don’t mean excitement and anticipation, I mean the opposite of that. Okay, I know I am being the world’s biggest negative nelly, I’m just so over cold, snow, winter, being inside, grey days and sickness. Can’t a girl get a break? Oh wait, I just did… in Atlanta… with Bruce. I honestly don’t mean to sound like a major whiney bummer (although I know I do), I really am trying to keep it positive and look on the bright side, you guys. For instance, my plants give me hope. They are small and tiny, but growing! Big changes in my garden are happening! I bundled up to brave the cold and rain just to take a few photos of my April garden so I could continue on the monthly-garden-photo-sharing tradition. I’ve been taking monthly photos of my garden for the last two gardening seasons. It’s been fun to share the small improvements in my garden with all of you. I hope you guys enjoy seeing what I am up to, but I have to admit taking these photos is partly selfish. It’s been really great to have these images as reference to look back at when I get the gardening itch mid-January or so. I’ve been pouring over old garden photos for the last few weeks getting myself super amped and excited to see my plants. After 7 long months, I really do begin to miss them. Iris Sedum – Stonecrop Tulips The rabbits like my Tulips. Heuchera Peonies Ferns Salvia Share this...
