Dudez, I never intended for it to be such a long absence here on the blog. I’ll start by saying that this has probably been the craziest few months of our lives. We were finally settling in with the West Wisco cabin, when Jeff was offered his dream position at a new company located right on the banks of Lake Tahoe, in C-A-L-I-F-O-R-N-I-A. I’ll save you some suspense and let you know that we are not re-locating. He is taking the new job though, after much soul searching and many, many late night conversations, we decided that it was time for him to make the move, say goodbye to his much loved company, and set out on a new adventure. Today marks his first day at the new job and he will be commuting between here and CA for the next six weeks or so, after that he’ll be working from home with week-long trips to California every month. Scary. Different. Nuts. We spent the last 10 days preparing for the change. He had added a cushion for a tiny bit of “vacation time” between the new job and the old. The kids started school two weeks ago, and everything seems like it has been sitting in limbo while we have been waiting for him to start his new pozish. All very new and exciting, but super crazy and a little terrifying. For the first time in 9 years I have days to myself where I don’t have to drive a kid anywhere! For reference, I had spent the last three years driving somewhere between 2-3 hours a day, whilst also trying to get a bunch of other shit done. Finn and Gus both started school last week and they take THE BUS. I’ve been trying to wrap my head around this new excess of time and freedom (?). Just two weeks ago, I thought it would be just me here all day in this house, but now I’m going to have the husband-dude working from home right when I was supposed to be entering to my new zen mom time. We need to get this guy a dedicated office with a door, stat. TODAY is my first official day of no-kids and no-husband (for the next few weeks). Luckily I have a new project for the house and I’ll be spending a good chunk of my time designing and […]

Hey Guys! How’s it going? As promised, I’m sharing a bit more with you guys about my mission to tidy up this house. By tidy I don’t mean “clean.” I mean go through everything, determine what can stay and what goes, and finding a permanent spot for every item/object/thing. My go to strategy is pretty simple. I empty the room or area that needs to be cleaned of all its contents – that’s right, every last thing. It’s kind of like moving without the packing. Next, I consider the space and determine if any of the main pieces of furniture need to be moved out of the space or rearranged. In the case of the music room I decided it made much more sense to have the piano on a different wall. The space is small, apprx 9 x 12 feet. I also added some more Expedit shelving that I had been hoarding since last summer, when the line was discontinued. Once the furniture was in place, I then began to slowly and methodically place the items back into the space. I consider each item determining whether or not it is garbage, can be donated, needs to be moved to a different location, or remains in the space. I do that for the better part of a day, an blamo! – I’m left with a clean tidy space. Everything in the room feels fresh and new. The purpose of our “music room” is to house our always growing record collection, while at the same time hosting a growing stash of instruments. The room is used nearly every day. Finn practices piano, Jeff will sneak away to play guitar, and jamz are being played on the record player often. It was fairly easy to come up with two main areas for the space. The record and stereo zone, and the instrument area. It all just needed to be organized to be cohesive and easily accessible. The room was in need of lighting. It faces east and becomes very dark in the evenings. Our fam is on a budget, so I decided to come up with the best looking, lowest cost solution available. As always, Ikea had me covered. I was able to use the Ekby bracket with the Sekond black and white braided cord to achieve a easy modern look. I spray painted the plastic tubing flat black and inserted a […]

I’m dedicating this post to all the folks out there who use Expedit (or the newer Kallax) Ikea shelves to store their record collection. For us, these bookshelves have been terrific for our records, they fit the height of a record nearly perfectly and are able to hold a lot of records. We’ve had our shelving system for 5 years, and there has been no warping or sagging – this seems impossible but I think the geniuses at Ikea probably did some sort of math and calculated the perfect amount of spacing needed between the vertical slats to hold heavy records. The shelves were well worth the small amount of money we spent on them. However, I’m so sick of having to constantly pull the records forward so that they look organized on the shelves. There is no back to the Expedit shelving system, and the records are constantly getting pushed back to the wall making it hard to find records and most importantly it looks bad (that is always most important). Between us hastily putting records away and the kids playing in the music room, our records are constantly looking like a hot, hot mess (see below). Gross, right? I know it might make me seem really anal (which is actually a fact, I am), but I can’t stand this, it seriously drives me nuts. I spent last Saturday morning putting the records away and organizing the shelf trying to achieve some sort relative calm, when it dawned on me that there was a really simple and easy solution to this problem. It’s what I’m calling “Record Stops” (patent pending) . I had some leftover 1″x2″ boards in the garage – you could easily use furring strips or 2″x2″s as well. I quickly chopped 15 pieces of wood down to 13 3⁄16“. All of the pieces were snug and fit the width of each cube nicely. I stained the wood with three coats of a dark gel stain. I used Minwax “Rosewood” stain, and it matched pretty well to the Brown/Black (such a stupid color-way name) Ikea shelves. Being that the shelves are made of fiberboard, I figured screwing or nailing the stops wasn’t really going to be that practical – instead I opted to use Liquid Nails to glue each of the stops into place. Placement of the stops was really easy, I used a record as a […]

Hey Guys! Hope you are all doing awesome today. It is snowing hard here, but it’s so much warmer than earlier this week, all is okay by me. I’ve gotten two walks in over the last 12 hours because I just need to get fresh air, and am desperate to be out of this house. I’m already thinking thoughts of spring, but am trying to suppress them because, winter after all is just a mind game. Anyway, on to what I wanted to tell you about; record collecting, record gear, and record shelves. Records and music have been a huge part of my life, maybe even the hugest. Music has shaped the path my life has taken – I got to see the lower 48 states because of it. I love being able to put on a record and feel inspired, and cool, and totally transported by the sound of some good jamz. My husband and I went record shopping on our first date – and started our most recent with a quick stop at a fav local record shop, it’s something we really enjoy collecting together. Kind of a weird couples past time, but it suits us. Lately we’ve been filling out our collection, it’s probably grown by a third over the last two years and it’s hard for us to resist picking up new records often. I should mention that I grew up in a house that had the entire basement dedicated to a very serious vinyl collection, I’m talking thousands and thousands of records. It was inevitable that someday both my brother and I would suffer with the same addiction my dad has – vinyl collecting. Christmas and birthdays for our fam has just become an exchange of records, it’s great! We recently came to the exciting realization that we had increased our collection so much that we needed to expand our shelving. That meant adding one more Expedit 2×2 shelf, like, woah. We’re getting to the point of maximum capacity, I mean, we could possibly add another set of 2×4 Expedit shelves on the opposite wall someday, but at that point we’d have to consider reinforcing the floors. I know that more and more people are collecting vinyl these days and there is a lot of good reasons to do so. Records have outlasted 8-tracks, cassettes, and cd’s because vinyl has better sound quality than any […]

A few weekends ago I finally got around to actually finishing up the music room, I mean it only took a year, but whatever. It’s always the final details that I just can’t seem to get done. I mean, it’s really hard to hang up some artwork and a small shelf so you better just never do it, at least that’s what I like to do. Anyways, I finally hung that stuff up and I think it’s looking pretty great. I wanted to tell you that A: Ribba ledges from Ikea make the perfect In-Play-Vinyl shelf, so if you have a record collection (big or small), you should consider getting some of these cool shelves. This “in-play” shelf system works in theory of course, you could be like my husband and then you won’t need one of these; just pile those bad boys up until your wife puts them away. And B: If your short on artwork, consider scrounging up some handmade items that your friends may have given you, framing them and putting them on the wall. Our good buddy Matt always makes us handmade B-Day cards, graduation cards and other sorts of cards. I had a whole bunch of them starting to pile up so I stuck my favorites in some old frames, and hung them on the wall. I included a drawing from our pal McTubbins (aka Aaron) too, he gave that blue and grey squiggly drawing to me on my birthday when I turned 25. You might not have a friend that makes you handmade b-day cards, don’t worry, you can frame other things too. Consider items you hold near and dear, frame that growing pile of birthday cards from your grandma that you don’t have the heart to throw away, or a collection of kid artwork that you don’t know what to do with. You might be surprised by how good a group of favorite things can look on your walls, plus it’ll make you happy every time you see it. Share this...
Guys, I finally did it! After weeks of procrastinating I finally set time aside to paint the music room radiator white. I knew this wasn’t going to take me long, but it was just one of this projects that I didn’t want to do, for fear that something would go wrong and it would take me all day and the loss of my mind to fix. Lucky for me that did not happen. Within one hour of starting this project I had a white and shiny almost new radiator! Don’t be scared Remember what this looked like?? Barfola. If you follow me on Facebook you know I had some trepidations about getting into this project. It all just seemed a lot harder than it actually was. I thought that it involved lots of preparation, sanding, scraping and special paint. It was scary. To start, I (by I, I mean Jeff) purchased a few cans of heat resistant spray paint. I’m not sure this kind of spray paint is even necessary. From what I read on the internet, a radiator shouldn’t get hot enough to effect the paint and typically one should be able to use any type of spray paint they like. This heat resistant style of paint would normally be used for some real hot situations like repainting the inside of your fireplace. Like I said, I was a totally chicken and scared, I wanted to be safe, so I bought the stuff and used it anyhow. For prepping the space, I used some old boxes that I had been hanging on to for far too long and made a little spray booth. I was careful and made sure to tape off the valve. I’ve spent hours taking apart other radiator valves in our house that had been previously painted shut by the old owners, I didn’t want to make the same mistake. I only wiped down the radiator and removed dust from the surface. I’m sure there is a good possibility that this radiator harbors some lead paint. I didn’t want to get into that lead-mess with scraping and sanding and potentially dying. Lucky for me, there wasn’t a lot of loose paint. For this job, a good wipe down was the way to go. Next, I opened all the windows and went to town. I’m sure I lost a few brain cells in that fume factory but […]

I’m so proud to show off the completed music room!!!! It’s been a big project that I started planning way back in September. It was my hope to finish by the end of the year, and I came close, but still had a hand full of small projects to get done. Here’s a before photo just to refresh your memory: What a hot mess it was. It’s come a long way. I started with slowly removing all the wallpaper, which ended with having the walls re-plastered. The plaster beneath the wallpaper wasn’t in good shape, and now the walls are pristine and smooth, like Hall and Oates light funk. My good old friend Brittany (aka Killa Cam), let me have this most wonderful teak and brass swag lamp. The inner paper is a little yellowed but it looks so great. I completely love it in the room. We purchased some of our favorite Expedit shelves from Ikea. We bought one of the 4×2’s and two of the 2×2’s. The second 2×2 was used as the corner piece for the ‘L’. I went to town with a chop saw and turned it into a 1×2 then attached it to the 4×2 and 2×2 with ‘L’ brackets. Are you confused yet? My original plan was to have a long and low shelf for record storage, but this ‘L’ plan is a much better use of space. I went for the black and white lamp from the “Vintage Etsy Finds” post I did a few weeks ago. I’m not totally in love with it, but it’s not my room, and I figured Jeff could have a say. The black lamp shade was just a spare I had around the house, and I’m not sure it will stay for long. I envision an elongated white drum shade would suit the shape of the lamp better. And did you notice the curtains?? Aren’t they just so manly now? Here’s a link on how I made my Ikea gathered top curtains into grommet top curtains. This is where the lucky Eames chairs have landed. I didn’t really have a specific home for them, and I figured they would work well in here because A: they look awesome, B: they could be used as extra seating when Jeff is entertaining raging jam seshes, and C: they can easily be brought into the dining room for extra butt […]

One of my big projects to finish by the end of the year was the “music room” aka the odd extra room on the back of our house that we’ve made home to our piano and record collection. It was a mess before, and I have plenty of pictures to prove it. Since November I have been slowly pounding away at it and I’ve finally made it to the final stretch. Here’s a little recap of the changes I’ve made and the finishing touches I have yet to do. Just in case you forgot, or don’t read the blog, or whatever, here is the mood board I made way back in September when I was dreaming up this room. It’s changed, as all projects do but the overall feel has remained the same. The biggest thing of course is getting down the really bad 80’s country floral wallpaper, it was a mess and took me weeks of on-again off-again work to get it done. As the wallpaper came down it became more and more apparent that the plaster below was a total goner. Luckily I know a guy, who knows a guy, and I was able to have Ken, the handiest of handy men, come over and fix it all for me and make it beautiful again. The next step was paint and wallpaper. Jeff and I were able to kill it during nap times and all-night-wallpapering shifts over our Christmas break. Thankfully, we were able to drink a few beers and listen to some records and it made for happy work (believe it or not.) As you can see in the above picture, I highlighted some of the things left to be done. First and foremost being to get some show posters and other memorabilia on the wall from back in the days when Jeff was in the “legendary touring band,” The Plastic Constellations, and if you believe that one… Here’s this angle, Santa brought Jeff some much needed guitar stands for Christmas. We hung up a drawing that we’ve been hauling around with us over the last few years made by our talented and super good friend, Matt Scharenbroich. As you can see in the notes above, I would like to paint that piano bench. It was an alley find and I was supposed to fix it up a LONG time ago. Pictured above is a piece of […]

Okay, I had to share cause I am so proud of all the work we’ve done and because I love this wallpaper to death. We are partaking in our annual Christmas break wallpaper tradition, so after the kids were in bed last night we marathoned it and got this feather wallpaper up on the music room walls.
You’re going to have to get used to more posts like this, I just can’t help myself with this new camera. Everything looks so beautiful now, I can’t even imagine what things are gonna look like once I get my tripod back (50’s, you heard me) and get into manual mode. Below are some photos of the music room with new beautiful walls freshly primed and ready to be painted. P.S. did you notice I got my new Bertoia chair? I picked it up a few weeks ago off of craigslist, the guy gave me the background story on it.. turns out it was one of the patio chairs from MCAD, I probably smoked 100 cigarettes on it during school, cause that’s what we did back then.
So, I guess this dewallpaper/rewallpaper/paint the music room project was a little bit bigger that I expected it would be, but NO regrets. It’s not like I could’ve lived with the room the way it was forever, that 80’s country wallpaper had to go! Things are coming a long though, I actually had to hire a professional handyman to help with repairing the walls. It turns out the wallpaper was covering up a real bad plaster job. Not to worry Ken, (the handyman, and my parents neighbor and all around good dude) is here to save the day! We’re slowly getting closer to seeing this oh-so-awesome ferm living feather wallpaper up on these walls. As you can see in the photo below, he skim coated the crap out of these walls and he’s coming back tomorrow for one 3rd and final coat (that’s right, I said 3rd coat.) Anyway, I am getting really excited to seeing this baby done, and there still is a possibility for it to all come together before the January 1st deadline. I’ll keep ya posted… Oh, and one last thing, it’s my 30th birthday this weekend!!! Let’s hope this is the last post I put up using my camera phone. A little bird told me I should be expecting some sort of picture perfect present!!!!! (Bad pun, sorry.) Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Happy Friday Everyone! Today I wanted to share an update on my projects that I need to get done before the end of the year. I am making progress!! I am a nap time warrior!!! Over the last two weeks I have removed all the wallpaper in the future “music room” and it was a huge task to say the least. It was def not one of those easy peasy tear the wallpaper off in 5 minute projects that you sometimes hear about (Erin Rooney, I’m talking to you). It came of in teeny tiny little pieces and took FOREVER. What I have learned throughout the process is that steamers were to harsh on my walls. they helped get the wallpaper off but it also took the paint off in the layers underneath the paper AND it was so hot it made the wallpaper glue all sticky and hard to deal with. The best method for me was using a paper tiger wallpaper remover (not to be confused with thee Paper Tiger) then soaking the walls for about 5 minutes with warm water applied with a sponge. Then after a spray with vinegar and water I went to town. The paper started coming off in bigger chunks leaving behind the backing paper which came off like butter after soaking in the vinegar solution for a few minutes. I am so glad I am done, but now I have bigger fish to fry. I need to patch and sand the entire room and then paint and wallpaper. I am getting excited to see the end result as I think it will look totally awesome. In other news, I saw this super cool how to on taking paint off vintage door hardware over at Manhattan Nest and I am adding it to my post new years things to do. I am also totally kicking ass in the current Apartment Therapy color contest. I entered during the final day on a whim with the thought I needed to do something productive in my life and now I am on the leader board for my division. Vote for me if you think I am worthy, I’d appreciate the support. Have a killer weekend. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Have I told you that I am spending my days at home now, I am officially a stay at home mom AND taking on watching Colz’ Elsa 5 days a week too. It is a crazy party here every day and for the most part I am enjoying it. I am most happy not to be spending the majority of my nights in the restaurant business that’s for sure. Anyhow, with all that being said I am at home a lot, and it hasn’t taken long for me to get the itch to start redecorating the whole place. It feels good to be motivated again after so many months of not feeling the desire to do anything. So onto my next project, something that should have been done a long time ago… On the main floor of our house we have a room in the back off of the dining room, it is meant to be used as a office or another bedroom but we have dedicated it as the “music room.” It is currently home to the piano a bunch of guitars and about 500 records and it looks like a hot mess. We keep the door closed to the room almost always and the room continues to collect more and more junk. It needs to become a functional part of our house ASAP. Here is the vision, first an accent wall with my current favorite feather wallpaper from Ferm Living. On the same accent wall we will add a record shelf & attractive toy storage. The piano in the corner needs to feel included in the room, I have a favorite piece of artwork that I have been holding on to that needs to hang above it. We are in desperate need of some wall shelves for books and storage boxes. An upholstered chair would be the perfect addition for when Jeff wants to go have a time with his guitar. Lighting is a must as their is no overhead lighting, a vintage brass lamp like the one pictured above would be perfect. These neutral curtains would be perfect in the room and would compliment the other curtains that we have hanging on the main floor of the house. A fresh green side table with storage below for magazines and books would add the perfect complimentary color to the room along with pops of red as referenced in […]
