This is maybe my favorite space in all of the cabin. I am a big sucker for a small cozy room.
↑ drag cursor over image ↑ Wazzup team? I wanted to share instructions for these two plug-in sconces that I recently made for our bedroom at the cabin. I wanted to design something that had retro feel to reference the age of the cabin (circa 1968) but I wanted it to be a little sophisticated as well, so I went with the brass finish, wood canopy and the covered twisted cord. I think it looks cool. As you can see below, the cabin bedrooms are actually coming together. The photo is of the bedroom we claim as ours, but both bedrooms are identical in size and the layout is the same but flipped. I’d like to make both bedrooms similar in style and vibes since they are technically twins, but I’d like to have differences between the two as well. For instance, the bed linens are the same in both, but I’ve been dressing them with different throw pillows to make each unique. I plan to do the same with lighting, rugs, side tables and dressers. Get it? But since we are the kings of this castle, I’ve been focusing more on pulling ours together – it’s a slow process, but it’s getting there.
Yo. Finally I can say the bedroom is done! We now have a real grown up space that feels awesome to hang out in whether we are lazily waking up on a weekend morning or watching zombie shows at the end of the day. We love it. It took a looooong time, I know. That’s because it cost dough (aka cheddar, aka lettuce, aka stacks, aka skrilla, aka money) and projects had to be spread out so that we weren’t ever spending too much of our budget at one time. Get it? Jeff trusted me and let me go with the way more feminine wallpaper, but I think he actually likes it now. I’m pretty sure he’d say the pink dresser could take a hike, but that’s not going to happen any time soon. Anyways, it’s light peach Jeff, not pink, and thank you for just letting me go with it. The space used to feel so dark (admittedly the black wall didn’t help, dur), I always thought it was just a room that moonlighted as a cave, but guess what, it’s not! Since lightening everything up, adding the wallpaper, accenting with light woods and furniture everything feels very bright and not remotely like a cave. I took a hint from our recently made-over sunroom (connected to our bedroom). It’s a room that like the bedroom is light and bright but also full of color. When I was decorating it last spring I couldn’t resist a saturated coral rug and it looked so good against a sofa I had upholstered in dark blue. Following the sunrooms lead, I used that same color palette in the bedroom but just toned it down and used more muted version of colors. Instead of coral I went blush, and used blue sparingly in different shades found mostly in the wallpaper and bedding. I painted a lot of stuff white, used a lot of light unfinished wood and peppered in black accents. My style is slowly maturing and evolving. My love of midcentury everything is waning, I still admire it, but prefer it in small doses. I still love color, but have begun to used it as an accent instead of a rooms primary focus. A few years ago I would’ve never considered an upholstered sleigh bed and would’ve jumped at a modern platform bed in a heart beat. I am beyond inspired and semi […]

Hello pals, welcome back to the slowest makeover project in the world: our bedroom. It has been no blink-of-an-eye endeavor; it’s more like a slow-mo replay. Over winter break I had to turn off the power a lot. My kids hate me now, as I cause the interruption of their shows and vid games and whatnots. I thought everything was battery powered these days, but apparently I was wrong. Whateves: these fans, sockets, switches and sconces weren’t going to update themselves, so those kids just had to learn how to deal. First, something not super electrical but it has power going to it from a cord I plug into the wall, so it counts. I installed two new sconces over the side table on either side of the bed. Do you see? They are the Isaac sconces from School House Electric and they are perfect. Schoolhouse reached out and hooked me up with a bit of a discount after I soullessly begged them on the internet for a deal – they fit right into the budget so I nabbed them up along with a covered cloth cord to run all the new electrical together. Can’t thank those guys enough for making awesome things and giving pitiful bloggers a helping hand. Then, I did the thing that I’ve wanted to do for so long: I replaced the ceiling fans. It took me a lot of debate to pick a fan, mainly because there wasn’t one specific fan that I loved. I ended up going with these Futura Eco fans by Hampton Bay because the price was good and they look simple. Now that they’re installed, I think they’re pretty great and I’m really happy with the choice. I didn’t need a light or anything. We had lights on our old fans and we rarely turned them on. The install on these was a bear especially when you multiply it by two, but I’m happy that they are up and keeping things cool. I didn’t want to leave anything untouched so I also replaced the outlets. The old ones had about a million coats of paint on them and had seen better days. It only took a few minutes to switch them out for these new black receptacles. I repurposed some of the copper outlet covers from the kitchen renovation, I painted them black and I think they look sharp against the […]

Remember back when I was debating moving the bed a few weeks ago? I’m sure you guys are just on the edge of your seat waiting to see what we decided to do. Well, after living with it for a few weeks we decided to go ahead and move the bed to the wallpapered wall. You guys were right, I really love it this way. There were pros and cons for moving the bed, one of the biggest cons was where to put the tv. This was a big issue for us because we L O V E our tv. We’re addicted and we’re not afraid to shout it to the world. We watch a few shows almost every night before bed, so we just needed to have a tv. Our bedroom is long and narrow so putting the tv on the far wall opposite the bed would’ve been strange. The tv would’ve been so far away that I’m not sure we could’ve seen the picture clearly or heard the tv from that side of the room. There was also the option of hanging the tv on the wall next to the bed, this wasn’t ideal because we’d have to crane our necks to watch our very important shows. Plus it would be the first thing you saw when you entered the room and it would scream, “look at me I’m a big ugly dumb life sucking black box hanging on your wall”. There would’ve needed be some sort of cover contraption built for the tv so that it could be tucked away when it wasn’t being watched. Then there was the long shot option. This option involved some eye rolling from friends and family. With the bed in the new position we needed to have something at the foot of the bed because the room is so long and narrow. Having a piece of furniture in this space elongated the bed and connected it to the other end of the room, dubbed the ‘dressing area’. Whether it was a bench or small chest of drawers, something needed to rest at the end of the bed to have the room all make sense spatially. Get it? So why not take our old credenzay-buffet-style chest of drawers, paint it white, remove the top, chop off the legs, add a new better top on hinges, and hide our tv inside of it!
Hey Guys, happy Friday! I meant to get a few posts out this week but we’ve been doing some intensive potty training and life has crazy been busy to say the least. Plus the lady friends and I had a girls night in the middle of the week – it took me most of the next day to recover. Note to self: No tequila shots after 9pm on a school night. I am a bad mom who still likes to think she can party sometimes, whoops. I’ve been really eager to share with you guys a more refined plan for the bedroom. Now that things are slowly falling into place I can see the big picture beginning to come together. I feel really great that I’ve been able to come in under our budget thus far, and I think I have a lot of good ideas that will help to save even more money as the project continues. I really want to achieve a vintage modern look set off with a bit of Scandinavian influences. I’m really thinking through space planning, making sure that all design elements serve a functional purpose in the space, while also relating to one another aesthetically. So here’s the plan! Painting the Ikea Stockholm Side Table from yellow to white adding brass hardware and (maybe) painting light-coral dipped legs will achieve an expensive look without having to spend tons of cash. 1: The Bed | 2: Vintage Accents | 3: Brass Hardware | 4: Sconce Lighting | 5: Duvet & Shams | 6: Lamb Hair Accent Pillow | 7: Indigo Quilt (the best bedding I have ever owned) | 8: Light Pink Linen Pillow Cases | 9: Indigo Sheets I plan on installing a corner shelving system using Ash wood – similar in style on the left but fitted for a corner area like on the right. 1: Vintage Bertoia Diamond Chair in White | 2: Sheepskin | 3: Brass Task Lamp I picked up an old cedar lined chest of drawers from my Aunt’s house. The dresser is in rough shape but with a little TLC, a new paint job and replacement legs, I think it will look pretty awesome in this space. 1: Ranarp Desk Lamp | 2: White Modern Planter | 3: Furniture Legs with Brass | 4: Full Length Mirror Share this...
Heya! Welcome to the post wherein I blabber about minute details of my bedroom for a very long period of time. Ready? Here goes. I dunno about you, but when I put together spaces in my home, everything is extremely thought out. I find that it really helps to have a detailed plan from the jump, and every element should be as functional to the space as possible while looking super fly. I start with the big decisions and than whittle my way down. Basically one decision leads to the next, to the next, and so, on until everything falls into place. I nag my husband and my girlfriends constantly about my options and ideas to reassure myself I am on the right track. There is a lot of self doubt involved in this process, it’s how I roll. I hope you don’t mind that I go back and forth in real time on the blog showing you guys my sometimes crazy detailed thought process. I still see this blog as a diary of some-sorts, so if things take a long time and I change my mind, then so be it. I’ll blog about it. I hope you guys don’t hate me for sharing all the mundane stuff too. Remember, a few weeks ago I was gung-ho on a wrap around fauxdenza? Well now (after much thought) I have come to the conclusion that I need to start with the big design choices before I start figuring out the secondary stuff. I get overly eager to just do things sometimes, which on occasion is a benefit, but in this situation I need to take it slow. I now realize that sticking cabinets on my walls is not always the best decision. The bed needs to come first because, it’s just more important to the room, I mean it is a “bed”room after all. I’d hate to invest in semi-built-in-cabinets and then not have it jive (yeah what, I said that) in the space. After much consideration we made a decision and ordered a real-deal-grown-ass-person bed. When Waff (aka Jeff Allen) and I began looking for a bed we wanted to find something upholstered in a light neutral fabric. Although I like platform beds we had decided we didn’t want something low to the ground, and narrowed our search to beds that included both a headboard and low footboards with clean […]

Okay guys, so if you didn’t know this about me, I love surprises but I totally suck at keeping secrets. I thought I was going to be some sort of awesome blogger and build suspense around this whole wallpaper thing, but who am I kidding. I’m too excited about it to keep it a secret. So if you couldn’t tell by the image above, we decided to go with the Rifle Paper Copper Peonies wallpaper, yes it’s totally not like my usual steeze, but man, I can’t stop thinking about. Not gonna lie, I went back and forth, it was actually a really hard decision and took me and Waffledoppledingdangdo (aka Jeff, my husband) and I a lot of focused brain power to come to a decision. Eventually it started to seem more and more apparent that the rifle paper was the one, even though it’s totally unlike us to go this route. We are excited to see it up on the walls. Can’t thank you dudez enough for your feedback on wallpapers. It was all a lot of information to consider but def helped steer us (me) in the right direction. I’m still going to hold on to the Woods wallpaper though, maybe we’ll use it in the basement renovation going down early next year. Okay, can I stop for just a second? I’m going to take a minute to mention that it is only the 2nd week of the school year and the whole fam is already coming down with really dumb colds. My brain is about a million miles away from my actual skull space, so sorry if sound totally looney in this post. I blame the cold medicine. Alright, so now that I got that PSA out the way, lets talk about my other plan. Since our bedroom is divided into two sections, the bed/sleeping area and the dressing/changing area, I thought it would be best to utilize the space as efficiently as possible on the sleeping side. The space isn’t huge and having floor space to move around the bed is essential. Narrow floating furniture would really allow for storage without overpowering the space. After much brainstorming I started to consider adding a fauxdenza to the corner of the room similar to what I did last spring in the sunroom, (which is located directly off of our bedroom, FYI). Anyway, I like the idea of […]

Hey Guys! Hope you all had a sweet labor day weekend. It’s always so nice to have a long weekend, but it’s super sad and depressing when that long weekend just means the summer is ending. I guess we’ll all be ready to to hunker down and cozy up in no time, right? I’ve been spending the last week or so working crazy-mad-hard at skim coating, sanding, caulking, priming and painting the walls in our master bedroom. I have literally been living my life covered in dust. The flip side, I totally won! I ruled this wall. Let’s start at the beginning. Just one short month ago I found myself staring at a huge tank that I just happened to find while snooping around in the bedroom. By snooping, I really mean going at the corner wall in my bedroom with a crow bar and sledge hammer, but whatev, same dif. Anyway, there was obviously a few hurtles I was going to have to fly over if I was going to remove the panelling, get rid of the pressure tank, and fix the damaged corner that had been covered up years (and years) ago. After discovering the tank I found myself facing a lot of questions and big unknowns – How was I going to get the tank out? Could it come out? Was it an integral part of the heating system? How was this all going to happen? How would I patch the baseboard? Would I have to texture the ceiling? And how the hell does one skim coat a wall? After thinking hard and consulting with some heating dudes, we discovered that we could actually remove the tank. The best way to do it without causing the most damage was to remove a section of the hardwood floor in the bedroom in order for them to cap off the pipe running to the tank. The biggest cost of this project was removing the tank. In order to do that I had to bring in the heating and cooling experts in to drain our boiler and radiator system, remove the tank from the wall, and then refill the system. That set us back $400 bones – which without a doubt was totally worth it to have the square footage back. After the tank was gone, I very carefully reinstalled the floors in the opposite manner I had taken them […]

Hey Guys! Long time no see. I miss you tons. I’ve been VERY busy using every scrap of spare time I have working on my bedroom walls. After we had the pressure tank removed last week I wanted to jump right in and begin repairing the walls and replacing the baseboard and “crown molding” (it is not very regal). I needed to get the bedroom back into suitable order ASAP. One of the biggest unknowns when I began planning out this whole bedroom project was how I was going to replace the missing baseboard and ceiling moldings in the corner of the room. I assumed I’d be able to find something at a salvage yard but I didn’t know for sure. Last week I went out with the kids to visit a few local architectural salvage places. I first stopped at Architectural Antiques, which was mind blowingly beautiful and crammed full of architectural wonderfulness, but they didn’t have a lot of scrap trim to dig through. They suggested I head over the river and take a look at the baseboard collection at Bauer Bros. Oh my god, I thought the hardware store was my favorite store, but this might be my new heaven. We wandered through an entire warehouse brimming with radiators, claw foot tubs, light fixtures, hardware and much much more before hitting the trim and molding section. This was a hunt and gather sort of an operation so with the kids help we began digging through hundreds of pieces of trim searching for something that matched our own. After about an hour we had a 12′ piece of baseboard that was nearly identical to the one we had as well as a piece of ceiling molding. It was so awesome, and fun, and exhilarating. I can’t wait to go back. The next challenge was having to install the baseboard and molding, something I have zero experience doing. After watching a few videos, including this gem, I felt confident that I could take on this task. I began by doing a little baseboard musical chairs. The piece that I needed to patch was only less than a few feet long, but since the baseboard I found was slightly different I didn’t want the pieces to join on a seam and look patched. Instead, I felt like the slight differences would be much less noticeable if the met up in […]

Hey Guys! Woah, I went on an impromptu blog break and it was awesome! I don’t know what got into me but after getting back from our buddies wedding I was all like “eff it”. For one, I didn’t have too many awesome things to tell you about, for two it’s the summer and I felt like just hanging, and for three I needed to spend that time working on this crazy bedroom mess I started. I’m sure a few of you don’t understand why I’ve put so much effort into removing the corner wall of the bedroom and the paneling. It is a huge project to undertake for not that much change, but the thing is, even though it will take a butt load of effort, this room will be way more awesome in the end because of it. That corner wall that was covering up the old ancient pressure tank was cutting into my bed side table scene. The room already feels bigger just having that space opened up. Plus no dated wood paneling, bonus! There is a pile of work for me to take on to get these walls looking like they once did. The next big project will be to search the local architectural salvage yards for baseboard and ceiling molding to match the existing. Both the baseboard and the ceiling moldings are very simple, so I am hopeful I will find something for the corner of the room. Bedroom Wall To-Do List ▽ Sand and Poly Floor in the Corner ▽ Texture the ceiling in the Corner ▽ Use Plaster Buttons on Loose areas of the walls ▽ Find and Install Baseboard Molding ▽ Add Quarter Round to Baseboard, Fill Holes, Caulk Paint ▽ Find and Install Ceiling Molding ▽ Fill Holes, Caulk and Paint Crown Molding ▽ Research Skim Coating ▽ Add Plaster Buttons, Repair Cracks ▽ Skim Coat and Sand Walls ▽ Prime Walls and Paint ▽ Wallpaper The big news this week is that I was able to successfully get rid of that huge pressure tank that I uncovered in the corner of the room. That is, me and a few of my best heating and cooling strong-men-buddies got rid of that tank. After spending a few sleepless nights weighing the pros and cons of accessing the pipe joint through my bedroom hardwood floor or through the dining room ceiling, I opted […]

Hello, happy Friday! I’ve been thinking hard about ideas for the very-much-in-the-future bedroom revamp and I wanted to share them with you. I need to do these weird exercises in design and inspiration so that I can stay focused on the prize. The sunroom (is essentially part of our bedroom) which you may remember was overhauled this spring. I totally love it now and we use the space all the time. However because the sunroom is looking all foxy and babelicious its making the bedroom look lame and boring. Something must be done. The Sunroom I am totally in love with the navy sofa and coral combo that I used in the sunroom, and would like to continue that idea in the bedroom – just in more subtle ways, emphasizing on neutral whites and grays. As always I love a nice marriage of modern pieces and vintage favorites, and have plans of accessorizing in rose golds and brass accents. I have always adored wallpaper and it’s something I’ve always wanted to add to our bedroom. Wallpaper hasn’t happened yet because I haven’t stumbled upon the perfect pattern or had the perfect plan to have the balls to buy and install something. I’m getting there though :) In the past, we have wallpapered the vestibule and the music room. I really love having those bold patterns throughout the house and would like to continue patterning it up in our bedroom. I saw this very feminine and floral paper from Hygge & West a few weeks ago and I have been thinking about it ever since. I don’t know if it will stay stuck in my brain as I continue on throughout the process but for now I really like the idea of it. I’ll have to convince Jeff that he likes it too – could be the hardest part of this whole reno. What about having a real bed you guys? I told you earlier this week that our mattress currently rests on a broken bed frame and a pile of old books – so it’s time. I don’t have a specific bed in mind just yet, but I think we’d like to have something upholstered with legs as opposed to upholstered with no space underneath – I have no idea what the technical bed designers term for this is. Anyway, a real deal bed would be tyte. We already have […]

What up dudes? After a few long months of enjoying the summer weather and fully giving into the gardening bug I finally got the fire to start a new indoor house project. Let me start at the beginning. In our entire adult lives Jeff and I have never had an adult-put-together bedroom. We have never had an actual bed, we only use a rickety bed frame and a pile books to hold up our mattress. We have a hodgepodge of furniture, much of it we have been carting around since we left our parents houses. After setting up the boys with super cool digs last fall I realized that they have a sweet bedroom, and we do not. Something was wrong with that picture. I painted the bedroom back in 2012 – it’s a nice bright white space. The far back wall is made up of cheap paneling, I painted it black to help disguise it by absorbing the light and down playing it’s vertical grooves. I always knew the paneling was hiding something, why else would it be there? The paneling covers the back wall and then angles out in one corner. I’ve been curious to discover what is hidden behind that panel ever since we moved in. I knew it had to be trouble. After pounding on the walls I could hear a metal reverberation behind them. Since we don’t have duct work I had no idea as to what it could possibly be. I was hoping hard for some sort of sweet time capsule. Last Friday morning I decided to solve the mystery. After feeding the kids some breakfast, something magical took over my body. I was possessed. I have a bad habit of starting projects by putting myself in do or die situations. I ran down to the basement, grabbed a crow bar, a hammer and a blade and headed back up to our bedroom to finally reveal the secrets of the corner wall. I got the panelling down in no time, discovered drywall beneath, and within minutes I was sitting face-to-face with a large steel, yellow, riveted tank, connected to what appeared to be the radiator system. The can of worms was opened, you guys. I was secretly kind of excited about it. My husband, who had no idea what I was up to, was not. I had a visit from the radiator guy yesterday […]

When we first bought our house I had dreams of finding all this cool old stuff. You know the stuff people just leave when they move out, and it stays in the house homeowner after homeowner. I was gonna find all sorts of cool old doors, hardware, remnants of wood flooring, pictures, notes, and love letters. Then, this did not happen :( Unfortunately, the previous owners, and the owners before them were the type of people that liked to take all their stuff with them when they moved, what jerks. I haven’t found any good treasures in this house except for an old hammer and a really old hot plate. I’m so curious to know who lived here before me. The 1940 census came out earlier this year and I poured over pages and pages of Minneapolis addresses looking for my home. It wasn’t there, It doesn’t exist, I couldn’t find it. My neighbors were there, I could see who lived in their houses, but no record of mine. Total major bummer, man. I’ve had such bad luck learning about this house. Then, when I was opening the windows to the attic for the house painters to access, I found a mirror hiding behind an old screen window! I knew this house was keeping something from me. I brought it down ever so carefully. It’s round and has this cool art nouveau-ish pattern around the edge. It’s got glue marks on the back, so I imagine it must have hung somewhere. It’s driving me nuts not knowing where it used to live, maybe in the entry way or bathroom? I imagine it’s original to the house as it’s in keeping with the style popular around the turn of the century, but I am no expert on that. I cleaned it up, sat it on top of the bookshelf, and propped it against the wall in our bedroom. I’m not sure if this is where it will stay but it makes a good home for now. Maybe I can hang it in the bathroom after we do a quick re-vamp in the fall. So, if anyone has a good hunch as to where a mirror like this might have hung you’ve got to let me know. I’ve got to solve this mirror mystery! Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

I had to post about this new bedding I bought, because it is awesome and you should know about it too. I’ve had my eye on this chevron bedding from West Elm for awhile. I really liked the pattern and could easily see it looking great in our bedroom. Plus our current bedding was on it’s 4th year and was starting to fade and get old. The thing is, back in about 2006, I purchased some West Elm bedding on sale for less than $60 bucks. I was really excited about it, and when it showed up, I was really disappointed. It was scratchy and stiff and not anything I would want next to my skin at the end of the day. I was super bummed. Ever since then I’ve been nervous about purchasing bedding from West Elm. I couldn’t resist that pattern though, so last week when they were offering free shipping I did it. I ordered up my bedding. I was really unsure as to how it was going to pan out. First of all their bedding is fairly inexpensive as far as bedding goes. I was worried I was going to get what I paid for. Not true! This stuff is great, it’s super comfy, it feels soft even though it’s 200 thread count. Second, the bedding is generous in size! I hate it when things are advertised as full/queen and then they barely fit the width of your bed. This full/queen duvet hangs over a good foot on either side of my queen size bed. It also has attachment ties on the inside of the duvet, something that has been lacking in recent duvet covers I’ve purchased. The button closures were made from Abalone shell (super pretty), and the cotton is organic. West Elm did it right! I totally love it and it was worth every penny of the $89 I spent on it. So, now you know. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Okay, so it’s been a few months in the making but I can finally call our bedroom done! Cue the confetti cannons!! That’s how I feel about it, anyways. My story goes like this: Jeff and I have never really put a nice bedroom together for ourselves. We suck, I know. I think the closest we ever got was back in 2003 at our first apartment together, when I painted some of my great grandma’s furniture white and the walls yellow and got a comforter to match it all. That was the extent of our bedroom decorating career. From there on out making the bedroom an awesome space has never really been something we focused on. At the loft our bedroom was practically in the living room so all we had to really do was make sure our duvet cover didn’t suck and our bed was made. At our rental house we didn’t really care because we knew we weren’t going to be staying there long. By the time we moved into our own house, the years of not really caring about our bedroom became normal and continued until just a few months ago. And honestly, the bedroom wasn’t on my list of things to do at all this year until I won all that fancy-ass free paint. I had painted most of the house already and really didn’t know what to do with it all, so naturally the bedroom became my target. After a few months of contemplating colors it finally came down to black and white, a color combination I had been admiring for awhile, but was nervous about incorporating into my house. It didn’t take long after the paint arrived to throw it on the walls. I loved with black and white from the get-go. Every Friday during the kids’ nap time for the past few weeks I would make it my goal to paint a wall in the room. Then gradually I began painting the trim and doors too. I finally finished the whole project just this week. That’s how you roll with a house full of kids. I also stripped the paint off all the door knobs to got them back to their original black metal finish, and repaired the woodwork and trim where it had been nicked up. It was especially bad on the backside of the main bedroom door. Here’s a before photo […]

Does this ever happen to you? I went up to my room to find a new shirt because Gus’ diaper decided to not work while I was holding him (major boo). Then, as I was searching for a new top to wear something came over me. I started ripping my closet apart. I’ve been wanting to go through my closet and purge for awhile, but was just putting it off. I guess I just couldn’t stand it anymore. All those old maternity clothes were starting to get on my nerves. In less than ten minutes I filled four bags of clothes to donate, two bags of ratty old clothes to throw away and the rest was what I kept. Now it’s time for the hard part… putting it all away. This is what it looked like after I went through it. Ugh. I decided that since I had everything out of my closet that it probably needed a little love. I don’t know about you, but Jeff and I are the type of people that don’t know how to close our closet door no matter how dirty. Unless company is coming over it’s always open. It was time to pretty it up, especially if the rest of the room was getting a makeover. I grabbed a left over roll of feather wallpaper that I had used in the music room and went to town on the closet shelving. I lined each shelf with the paper. It was super easy but just in case you need to know this is what I did. Step 1. Before you even do anything you should probably be klutzy like me and spill wallpaper paste all over the floor. Step 2. Clean up your mess and re-take the photo of your supplies. Get your wallpaper, wallpaper paste, paint brush, pencil and scissors or razor. Step 3. Dip your brush in the wallpaper paste and spread it on the shelf. Step 4. Cover your shelf with wallpaper and trim the edges with your scissors. Yay! After I finished with the wallpaper I decided that maybe my closet could use some paint. I went and grabbed the can of black paint I had used on the far wall in our bedroom and went to town on the interior wall of the closet. Because the black looks so good on the bedroom wall, (I LOVE the way it […]

I’m still not done with our master bedroom, but I’m getting there. I’ve got one wall left to paint, a little trim to touch up and some new hardware to install. Then the painting/updating/fixing/repairing part of the project is done. Next comes the really fun part, shopping! So if Jeff (wink wink) let me go hog wild, this is what I would buy: 1. Organmi Crease Vase from Have You Met MIss Jones 2. Draper Stripe Shames from Dwell Studio – Just another piece of Dwell Studio linens to add to the bedding. I know that there is a lot of pattern going on already, but why stop there. I’d love to add these in replace of the white shams I currently have on the bed. 3. Perch Glass Lamp from West Elm – Bedside Table Lamp Part I 4. Alarm Clock with Yellow Hands from Braun 5. Ruperta Cushion from Fine Little Day – Total Love Fest 6. Industrial Task Desk Lamp from West Elm – Bedside Table Lamp Part II. I’m totally obsessed with this lamp, I want it, and I love it. Photo Credit: SFGIRLBYBAY.com I’ve been totally inspired by Victoria’s space in the above photo. I’m in love with the black and white and all the color. No matter how much I’d love to be one of those minimal types I just can’t go get down with a minimal palette in my own space. I want the bedroom to look grown up, but still not too serious. Can’t wait to get this room done, it will be the first time we’ve really ever had a nice, put-together bedroom.
So, I did it. I pulled the trigger. I painted my bedroom wall black, and I think I’m kind of in love. I’ve been swooning over black for awhile now, and after discussing this idea with a few friends whose opinions I trust, I decided to go for it. I ordered up some paint a few weeks ago from Farrow & Ball and waited. Fast forward to Thursday: a shit ton of paint shows up on my doorstep. By Thursday night there was paint on my walls. The plan was to paint the far wall a color called “Railings” — a deep black with a hint of blue. The other walls would be “Winborne White” and the trim would be “All-White”. Doing this with kids in the house is a crazy juggling act. First off, I’m a lazy painter. By that I mean I just pull out a brush and I go to town. I don’t prep, I don’t use drop cloths, I don’t change my clothes, I don’t use tape and I don’t prepare or get the necessary supplies and tools. Now you know my dirty secret. It shouldn’t be a surprise to you that half of my room is still unpainted. I would hate to have to move all my furniture into the middle of the room and work around it. I just can’t deal with that chaos, so I work in sections. I started with the wall behind my bed; first the trim, then primer on the walls, then two coats of paint and lastly I cut in around the molding. It might take longer painting wall by wall but it’s much better this way because if a kid decides that they need me to help them go pee and then need a glass of milk and then need a new show on Netflix…well, then I can drop what I’m doing and get back to it later. Even if later is days from now. My room won’t exist as a total disaster, just a partial disaster during that period. You see where I’m going with this. Anyway, more on that later. For now, what do you think? The wall that I painted black is paneling. Not cool paneling either — if paneling can even be cool — it’s ugly paneling. I’m afraid to take it down because I’m pretty sure it’s hiding dark, dark secrets. My suspicion […]
