I’m back to my seasonal need to tweak everything inside the house. This happens every fall, it’s that whole nesting thing. Our time outdoors is limited, daylight is waning, and we begin to nestle into our winter ways (I’m so damn poetic today). We spend a lot more time in the living room, even eating meals at the dining room table (novel huh?). It’s nearly impossible for my mind not to wander when it comes to re-decorating these spaces. The dining room has never been a space that I’ve felt overly confident or proud of. I’ve had to really suss out inspiration and blindly find a cohesive design from the jump. Pins for dining rooms featuring dark wood paneled walls, built-in buffets (done in a style that appears to be a mashup of craftsman and late victorian eras), and mid-century modern furniture are few in far between. I’ve realized over the years that if I’m going to embrace this wood trim on our main floor that I need to go dark with the wall color, seriously, it seems to be what works the best. Believe me, I’ve tried everything. I would love for it all to be white, but it always seems forced. Dark walls just seem right in the space. Plus going dark has the added benny of being v cozy in the winter time. My main concern is that dark walls paired with lots of paneling and woodwork tend to feel a bit more refined and grown up, both things are not really words you would use to describe me or my style. Herein lies the problem, figuring out how to put my personal chill into these adult rooms. We’ve really embraced white walls and a much more Scandinavian-inspired-cabin-style in the rest of the home and it seems to work really well in this old house. I still hang on to a few mid-century pieces that I love, a lot of black and white textures (especially with throws and pillows) and a high repetition of brass and copper metallic accents. I also reiterate dark blues everywhere (if you haven’t noticed) and sprinkle in some blush tones now and again. Our bedroom for example is really comfortable, light and airy, and the copper peonies wallpaper does a good job of making it more mature. It’s heavier on the scandinavian and light on the grown up. I think I need […]

I’ve been trying to figure out how I was going to decorate for Christmas this year, I love a classic green, red and white Christmas, it’s usually my default holiday color scheme. I have this weird aversion to all other christmas color combos, anything else so often seems too serious, fancy and traditional for me. Traditional? What? I know, I know, red and green are the most traditional Christmas colors, so what the heck am I talking about? For me, there is something more light hearted and casual about your classic red & green Christmas decor. Plus, I’m a total sucker for a vintage Christmas and those are its signature colors. I often think that a white or silver color scheme (for example) can sometimes come off as highbrow and stuffy and does not suggest fun and whimsy, part of the key elements to a cool Christmas celebraish. I’m not trying to say that using more modern christmas colors makes you a rich square, it just reminds me of the suburbs from when I was a kid, where everyone used white twinkle lights, always. You get me, guys? It’s me, not you. All that crazy rant being said, I just felt like I had to do something different this year, I guess I’m growing up, or getting bored, or something. So I went through ALL of my Christmas stuff and picked out all the ornaments and decorations that were blue, tealy blue, dark blue, yellow-y green and red. I also went through all my dinnerware and set out every piece that was white or blue. I then started the task of hanging, re-hanging, arranging, re-arranging, setting and re-setting the items before me. And guess what??? I’m really loving the results. The table is pretty, and well presented, my favorite part are the blue chargers, which I picked up at Michael’s for $1.00 a piece. These colors look totally great in my house, it still is fun and whimsical but just a bit more grown up. Blue ornaments and decorations are scattered throughout the house and are offset by green & white flower arrangements and candles. I think it all works so well, I’m really glad I decided to try something new this year. Now I need to figure out how to cut myself off from my love affair with teal blue but that’s a conversation for another day. We’ll be […]

Cool, I am excited! It’s holiday time, and that means party time! In anticipation of all the impending imbibing I will be taking part in the coming weeks, I took it upon myself to put together a nice little bar cart (table). If you recognized that bar table as the side table from the living room you win! This poor table is currently homeless because we have a huge Christmas tree taking its place next to the couch. What does a girl do with a side table just roaming around her house?, well I will tell you what… She makes an awesome bar out of it, duh. I am a hoarder of glassware, just ask my dining room buffet. It’s brimming with the stuff. So, it was easy for me to go through and find my most favorite tumblers and champagne coupes to put on display. Guess what? I also hoard booze, and it was even easier to open up the liquor cabinet and find the prettiest bottles to put on my circular white tray. Booze and glassware just happen to be the two key ingredients to making a cocktail, and to making a bar, so yeah, this is all coming together pretty nicely. Other things you may consider getting for your bar include; cocktail shaker(s), an ice bucket, a citrus zester, some lemon and limes, a mortar and pestle, a large assortment of glassware, and don’t forget the mixers such as tonic water, soda water, sparkling water, coke, and lime juice. Finally, to add some holiday vibes and bring in some height I painted this stick white, put it in a vase, and threw some ornaments on it. Total tyteness achieved! A holiday bar cart that’s just waiting for a party, guys!

Well all this reupholstering of dining room chairs has me in desperate need of getting my dining room a smidge bit more put together. This room has been driving me crazy since we moved in. It’s the paneling, it’s nice, but it’s dark and it gets in the way of any sort of wall hanging options that a normal person in a normal dining room would have. I’m over it. Part of my solution to this problem has been to incorporate as many white accents and objects in the room to help lighten it up and take away from the glaringly dark woodwork that covers the walls. Thank god Ikea loves selling me white frames, white vases, and white candlestick holders. I went to town covering the walls with white Ribba frames. I decided to include the matte in each frame (as opposed to going full frame with my artwork) to ensure the maximum exposure of white. I like the new white frame version much better than what I had going on before. After we moved in the thrifty girl inside of me decided to try a mismatched yet oh-so-put-together look and it just wasn’t working. Good effort on my part, but in contrast it was a complete fail. I can’t even believe I let it hang up there so long. So here’s a quick run down on how I hang a bunch of frames, this works especially well for Ikea frames. After you have opened up all your Ribba frames and have replaced the liners with your beautiful artwork take the liners and tape them up on your wall. For me, this takes a lot of the question out of hanging pictures. You can get a real good feel for what your room will look like with your new artwork hanging and you’re sparing your walls from excessive and unnecessary nail holes. Now that you’ve figured out where you want your frames to go you’ve got to hang them. Take your tape measure and pull the frame wire taught. Measure the distance from the frame wire (pulled taught) to the top of the frame. Every frame is different so make sure that you are measuring every time you hang a new piece of artwork. Now you gotta figure out where to hang your artwork on the wall. This is how I did it; take the distance from the wire […]

I had taken a few photos around the house this weekend thinking I might try and do a post called “Inspired by the Royal Tenenbaum’s” or something weird like that, but when I went back to look at them this afternoon I realized that they weren’t really that Tenenbaumesque (which made me sad because I like to think my house aspires to be the blue smaller version of that house.) Instead I realized how similar the color themes were from room to room. Two of the photos were from the dining room, and two were from the new updated music room. This bright poppy coral color is something that’s showing up more and more around my house and is totally unintentional. I guess I’m just secretly drawn to the contrast between the muted greys and the bright red-orange, but seriously, why wouldn’t I be? Seeing it like this makes it look kinda awesome. Anybody else have a secret color that keeps showing up in your space?

I’ve been meaning to organize the built-in buffet cabinet in our dining room for some time, it’s been set up the same way ever since we moved in, straight from the moving boxes and into the buffet. It’s seems like I should’ve done this a long time ago since it’s such a prominent piece in our main living space, but I never gave it too much thought, and I didn’t really have any great ideas for what I should do with it anyways. As a reminder, here is what it looked like before; unorganized, overflow storage. I was inspired to make a change after running into these lovely placemat’s at our local garden store the other day. I usually can resist the urge to buy items spontaneously but not with these babies, I was helpless against their power. With my spring color fix satiated I set the table to see how the placemat’s, my dinnerware, and glassware all looked together. The table looked great but the buffet did not, so I set Finn up in front of his latest pixar obsession, emptied out the cabinet, ran to my studio and grabbed some left over remanents of the Orla Kiely wallpaer we had used in the vestibule, and went to town. I purged all the items that were not in the same color family as the placemat’s and kept everything that was; teal, orange, and celery green. Then I began to reassemble the cabinet. Here are a few of my favorite spots in the buffet. I think the orange and teal look badass together.
