Woah guys, Hello! To say this kitchen reveal is a long time in the making is an understatement, and I am thrilled to reveal our newly renovated kitchen and mudroom addition! This project has been in the works since 2017, and with the help of my trusty friend SketchUp, we were able to come up with the perfect plan for our home through countless iterations. We were asking ourselves big questions, like what does this house need that would make our life inside its walls the most comfortable? Our goal was to create a functional kitchen with room enough to cook and have friends over, a mudroom and utility closet that would work hard for our family, a powder room that would be easily accessible yet tucked away and private, a patio that could be used for summer cookouts, AND that we keep it all historically relevant to the era of the home. We were willing to make a big investment in our home to achieve that. Our home is a 1910 four square/craftsman mix, and we were committed to respecting its historical architecture in all of our renovation plans. Think 1910 in the details but with better plumbing and insulation. We came up with a plan that did a handful of things for us and how we experience our home. Our plan was to turn the space that was formerly the kitchen, pantry and mudroom into a single kitchen which would encompass the entire back quarter of the house instead of just a small portion of it like it had. We would extend out the back of the house, adding a small but mighty 11’x11′ addition which would gain us a main floor powder room, a coat closet / pantry / utility closet and a mudroom off the rear entrance to the house. That solved a lot of the flow issues we were having on the interior. The addition also solved a number of issues on the exterior of our home too – I’ll make sure to follow up once the backyard recovers from last year’s excavation, but to sum it up quickly, the addition would create an intimate nook we could use as a patio and allow us a better entrance into the yard and garden. Historical Details The most important thing to us was to maintain the historical integrity of our home. We were committed to preserving […]

People of the internet, greetings and salutations from my little neck of cyberspace. I wanted to write a post and share some exciting news, after 12 years of wanting to renovate our dysfunctional kitchen we are finally able to make it happen and we are going big! We have decided to extend the back end of our house and add on a mudroom, closet and half bath. This will allow us to make our kitchen larger than it currently is because we’ll be able to absorb the old mudroom and pantry into the future kitchen space. We’ve been working with a design/build team since November 2020(!) and plan on breaking ground early summer 2022. When we bought our place in 2010 the kitchen was almost a deal breaker. We actually had passed on the house because of the kitchen and then our realtor asked us to come see it again and we agreed that the house should be ours, and someday we’d remodel the kitchen. I never thought someday would be so far away, but I’m glad it is because now we can really afford to do build a kitchen that we’ll love for a long, long time. Drink it in! I’ve been working on my own designs of the kitchen for years, I probably started in 2018 and it’s evolved a lot since. I’m really glad we have taken our time with this because we’ve really been able to soak up ideas and change things around. Our design/build team has been great too, they’ve taken my sketches and fine tuned them adding some great insight and ideas. Would you like to see some sketchup renderings, because I’d love to share them with ya. Just a little disclaimer, these renderings are not the official drawings, it’s just crazy old me needing to imagine how the kitchen will act and feel from all angles. Some of the cabinetry will be changing size and function, and paint colors are not set in stone, but generally you get the idea of how the space will work. The architectural drawings throughout the post are the correct dimensions for cabinetry, cabinet doors, and drawers. Our current entrance into the kitchen is a very narrow 30″. We will remove a few sections of the wood paneling and widen the opening. This is how it will look from the living room. The living room currently has the […]

Hey, wow! I never expected it to be nearly a year in between posts. Shit. How fucked up was that last year? What an absolute major bummer quarantine was. I felt like before covid I was in such a groove with the blog, and then it turned quickly turned into not being able to give any effs about anything and just surviving day-to-day. That sounds dark, but that year was dark! My kids did distance learning from March 2020 to June of 2021. They went back to school 8 weeks ago. I was pretty deeply depressed for most of the winter. It was hard to do most things; as I’m sure you all experienced in your own ways. Anywho, on the up and up! It’s nearly the end of October. I have been enjoying transitioning my house back to a house and away from being everyone’s everything – school, office, shelter, entertainment, social hub. You should see me; I’ve been cleaning closets, reorganizing, making beds daily. I’m just a veritable whirlwind of order and cleanliness. Jokes aside, I needed to get the house back to being a house before I could even think about coming back to the blog and sharing again. I did do a few projects here and there over the last 18 months – it just didn’t feel like sharing them was the right thing to do at the time. Now that I’m feeling more settled I thought it might be a good time to begin to catch you all up. I’m going to title this series “The Lost Year” and then share projects I’ve done around home and the cabin – most of them at the cabin. The first project I’m sharing is what I think is close to the final iteration of the cabin kitchen! To catch you up to speed, the cabin kitchen started out as a very basic kitchen that had been showing some wear and tear. The cabinets are all built from standard lumber with simple plywood doors and drawers. It all starts summer 2017 soon after moving in. My Ma and I removed the upper cabinets that blocked the view from the lake. I updated the floors and painted before snow hit the ground the first winter, that update went a long way. The VCT floor tiles were a great solution for updating the kitchen and I was able to cover […]

Wow! I would have never imagined that it would have taken me nearly a year to get the kids' bedroom project wrapped up to the point where I could post about it. My life has been consumed with helping my kids with their school work ever since March, and my priorities have had to shift a lot. I feel privileged to be have the availability to spend time helping my kids, but I have missed being able to work on projects. I've been slowly chipping away at their bedroom makeover project. I have had a paint brush at the ready trying to steal away 15 minutes here or there if the time allowed ever since we "moved back" to Minneapolis at the beginning of the school year...

This my friends, is the fifth (!) time I have wallpapered, so I pretty much consider myself an expert. Stick with me and you’ll be alright.

This is something that I’ve wanted to do for sooooo long.
Hey Guys! Phew, it always feels good when the holidays are behind us and we can move on to the New Year. I am finally getting the chance to settle back into the day-to-day, and the mundane and boring is being embraced with open arms. Week after week of activity is too much for this old gal. I’m not much of a big New Year resolutions type of person, I prefer to think of myself as constantly adding to a list of to-dos and improvements. However I did get a lot out of setting some rules/goals/intentions for the blog and projects in 2018 and I suppose it would be kinda nice to continue with the tradish in 2019 as well. Because it always feels good to look back (or maybe sometimes it doesn’t), I went over some of my biggest accomplishments for the year and also made new goals for the year to come. Let’s dive right in! Participated in the One Room Challenge I was in a bit of a rut and really wanted to challenge myself so I decided to go for it an participate in the One Room Challenge. Wow, what a crazy ride that was. Exhausting, dirty, messy, but very satisfying. I was able to restore a set of windows and make an entirely new upholstered bed out of Ikea remnants. I am so happy with how it turned out and it was exactly the thing I needed to get my butt in gear. I designed a Restaurant! I said “yes” to new opportunities in 2018 and took on the very fulfilling task of designing a restaurant. It was A LOT of work, but I couldn’t be more proud of the space. It was so rewarding to see plans on paper become a reality over the course of the summer. Updated the Cabin Bathroom Of course a lot of the projects I completed this year took place at the cabin. The cabin needs so much TLC. I wanted to update our little bathroom on the second floor and began this summer by fixing plumbing issues and replacing the floor with new industrial tile. Then I added a board and batten treatment to the wall mimicking the board and batten on the outside of the cabin. It has made such an improvement to the flow of our space, and friends and family who had seen the bathroom […]

So stoked to share the cabin kitchen revamp (mostly on a budget) with ya, I mean it’s only been a year in the making. Talk about slow design! Of course, some of that slowness is by necessity, renovating a small cabin kitchen when you leave 120 miles away isn’t going to happen over night. When I get presented with a design problem like our kitchen cabin, my first instinct is to make the most trying to maximize design on a budget...

↑ drag cursor over image ↑ Wazzup team? I wanted to share instructions for these two plug-in sconces that I recently made for our bedroom at the cabin. I wanted to design something that had retro feel to reference the age of the cabin (circa 1968) but I wanted it to be a little sophisticated as well, so I went with the brass finish, wood canopy and the covered twisted cord. I think it looks cool. As you can see below, the cabin bedrooms are actually coming together. The photo is of the bedroom we claim as ours, but both bedrooms are identical in size and the layout is the same but flipped. I’d like to make both bedrooms similar in style and vibes since they are technically twins, but I’d like to have differences between the two as well. For instance, the bed linens are the same in both, but I’ve been dressing them with different throw pillows to make each unique. I plan to do the same with lighting, rugs, side tables and dressers. Get it? But since we are the kings of this castle, I’ve been focusing more on pulling ours together – it’s a slow process, but it’s getting there. Parts List 1 – wooden canopy 1 – universal mounting bracket 2 – 1.5″ threaded 8/32 stud 2 – acorn nuts 1 – washer 1 – nut 1 – nipple 1″ 1 – brass threaded pipe 1.5″ 1 – armback 1 – brass threaded pipe 1″ 1 – cluster – 2 holes 2 – brass threaded pipe 3″ 3 – coupling 1 – nipple 3/4″ 2 – brass cup 2 – socket 2 – lightbulb 2 – electrical nut 1 – strain relief 8′ – cord 1 – switch 1 – plug Instructions Please, if you’re not familiar with electrical wiring contact an electrician Disassemble a socket and attach a set of b&w wires (gold hot, silver neutral) Reassemble the socket with the wires feeding out the top Thread 3/4 inch nipple onto wire and then attach to the socket – tighten the set screw on the side of the socket Thread the cup over the nipple and then thread the coupling onto the wire. Screw the coupling onto the nipple sandwiching the brass cup Thread the 3″ pipe onto the wires and screw into the coupling Repeat these steps Thread the cluster onto first set […]

Hey Team! I just spent the last 10 days flat on my back annihilated by some sort of flu/strep combo. It is no joke people! Jeff has it now too, of course he does, but somehow we spared our children. For them, it’s been like lord of the flies (sans Piggy), no one wears clothes, and there is no such thing as bedtime – cinnamon toast crunch for breakfast lunch and dinner. I’m just proud that they kept themselves alive. They were rewarded by not getting sick and for that we are all truly blessed. Yesterday at lunch, Jeff and I were chatting as we pathetically sipped chicken flavored ramen. We decided that this sickness was like a 100 year flood, but only to your body. Anyways. I wanted to get this post done last week, but that wasn’t gonna happen. I’m here to talk about goalzzz babies, and I got a few and I wanted to share them with yas. Right not my goal is to have my face stop leaking before the weekend. But I have lots of other bigger, happier goals too. For the past few months I’ve felt like I was floundering a bit and I think it was probably because I wasn’t focused. I was doing stuff, but I wasn’t doing it in a way where I could say, “check that one of the list, one less thing I have to worry about” and then pat myself on the back. It sounds cheesy, but I operate a lot better when I can see that I’m actually achieving goals. That being said, here’s my list for this year, it covers everything – house, cabin, garden & blog. HOME Upstairs Hallway Hands down, the ugliest space in our entire house is the upstairs hallway. It’s just so boring, and blah, and narrow, and I’ve never been able to really spend time with or give it any TLC. Part of me kind of just hates it. You’ll hear all about why soon enough. The goal is to make the upstairs hallway a more non-disgusting part of our home. Staircase Once I get a handle on the hallway, I’d love continue the momentum and keep it going down our stair well. This space has potential, and I’ve been grappling with it for years. I’ve found if you really try and ignore something you can almost make it disappear (yay)! […]
