Wow! I would have never imagined that it would have taken me nearly a year to get the kids' bedroom project wrapped up to the point where I could post about it. My life has been consumed with helping my kids with their school work ever since March, and my priorities have had to shift a lot. I feel privileged to be have the availability to spend time helping my kids, but I have missed being able to work on projects. I've been slowly chipping away at their bedroom makeover project. I have had a paint brush at the ready trying to steal away 15 minutes here or there if the time allowed ever since we "moved back" to Minneapolis at the beginning of the school year...

Guyses! Today I am going to teach you how to install wallpaper on an accent wall. This is a job that is fairly easy, a tiny bit stressful, and 100 percent totally worth it. This my friends, is the fifth (!) time I have wallpapered, so I pretty much consider myself an expert. Stick with me and you’ll be alright.

So, guys. I’ve been wanting to buy this certain rug for the boys’ room for a long time, and after waiting for-like-ever, we finally purchased it last month. I know, buying a rug isn’t the most exciting thing in the world, but I thought that after waiting for so long it was at worth a blog post. There’s a lot that happens to your relationship to an object or thing if you decide to hold off and wait for it. Either the heart grows fonder or you get over it, (and go out with someone else). Simple as that. I knew I loved this rug before I knew how the boys’ room would change, before I knew I’d add that crazy geo pattern to the walls, before I painted it white, and before I purchased the bunkbeds. I knew that if anything would happen to this room it needed to involve that navy and white striped rug. I just liked it soooo much. The rug was reasonably priced at around 300 bucks with all the discounts and such that RugsUSA is constantly throwing at you. It wasn’t just the price that made me wait it out though, it was the principle. I’ve been trying very hard to really consider how much I want, or as it were, need something, before I purchase it. I don’t want purchases to be things that are temporary, I want them to last. Even if they don’t last in that specific place they were intended for, I want them to be able to transition to other parts of our home, be reused and repurposed. I want to get the most out of them, I want to make practical thoughtful decisions about the things I purchase. I want this because I think its time that we all start doing this more often. Sorry, I know this is like my second tangent in the last two weeks, I must be getting old and delusional and thinking my opinions matter and you want to hear about them. I think we should start thinking about the impact the choices we make has on the environment and our surroundings. I think we should wait for it before we really go for it. I think we should all try and suppress the impulses and truly consider before we buy more. I’m not perfect (duh). I buy crap I don’t need at […]

Five years ago this month we moved into this house. The entire place was painted in a terrifyingly boring light brownish-yellowish color that was well past its prime, if there ever was any sort of prime for that brand of mediocrity. Bottom line: everything needed a fresh coat of paint. The first thing we did when we moved – like literally, before we unpacked a single bag – was tackle the bedroom of our then-20-month-old son, Finn. We painted his room a bright yellowy-green. There was no plan for this color, no design, no motive, no NOTHING, beyond our satisfaction that it was 100% not the bland death that existed before. The little baby that moved into that room 5 years ago is now nearly 7 and has a younger brother he now shares his bedroom with. Things have changed. After we slapped that green paint up on the walls we didn’t gave it another thought for quite some time. Even 2 falls ago when the boys combined rooms and started sharing a bedroom, updating the paint color was the last thing on my to-do list. Fast forward to now, spring 2015 and I’m ready for a project. Lucky for me, my pals over at Ace gave me the inspiration to finally tackle those green walls and make this bedroom a space that is fun and happy for my boys. You guys might not know it, but something really great happens in March. I know what you’re thinking, but no, it’s not the first day of spring, the snow melting, the sunshine, the college guys throwing the round orange sports ball at the netted circle… none of that. It’s actually the month of 31 Days of Color over at ThePaintStudio.com. For seriousness though, if you’re looking for color inspiration, that place is oozing it. All of us Ace bloggers are contributing by doing something special with a different Clark+Kensington color every day – so hop on over and see what some of my blogger pals are up to. I actually choose this bright, bright yellow OPI Color by Clark+Kensington color called ‘Need Sunglasses?’ It’s a super intense yellow, yes, but I wanted something that was bright, happy, fun and most importantly was a color the boys both actually liked. This bright yellow had to be an accent color in this space because it would’ve been too much to add that […]

Hi Guys! Today I’d like to share with you the progress I’ve made on the boys’ new shared bedroom. Just a little background info, Finn and Gus are 5 and 2, this fall we invested in a modular bunk bed from Oeuf. In was a significant investment for us, but the bed has a lot of potential for repurposing down the road, this seemed like the right choice for us. The biggest benefit is that the bunk bed can be split into two beds, so when the time comes for these guys to break up, they can leave the relationship with a twin bed a piece. It is important to us that the boys share a room. As kids, both Jeff and I shared a room for a period of time with our siblings – I’d like to think it helped create relationships with our bros. Our hope (fingers crossed) is that having the kids bunk together will help them bond and grow as brothers. I’m looking forward to, and have enjoyed the mischief that has resulted from this so far. It’s been quite the task combining two boys into one room. They both have different interests and toys that they like to play with. We went through everything! I mean everything, toys, clothes, artwork and furniture. I/We figured out what needed to stay and what could go. Purging always feels good, and I try and do it once a year, but this job was a really big one. We had piles of stuff to donate, piles to hand down, piles of toys that still had life in them, and piles of sentimental stuff that needed to be put away in storage. There was also the task of combining furniture and rearranging artwork – basically making it all look somewhat cohesive and less of a hot mess. As a mom who remembers quite well what it was like to be a kid, I tried to fill this room with lots of “discovery” spaces (aka awesomely cool secret play spots) for the kids. I’ve mentioned in the past, that this room is the ideal kids room. Both boys have closets on either end of the room. In each closest is a dresser and a built in toy chest. I added lighting to each closest and made play spaces for each of the boys. Gus has his Fisher Price toys and matchbox […]

Guys! We are the proud owners of a fully functioning kid lair! Finn (my 5-year-old) and I worked our butts off over three afternoons last week to get the bunk bed put together, and we did it. Finn did half of the work, he insisted. In his eyes, building the bunk bed was like building a giant Lego set. He was in heaven – he lives and dies by instructions and rules, and he couldn’t get enough of putting this bed together. His dad has a bit of a hard time with spatial reasoning and general construction principles, and he couldn’t be prouder that his son is “not like him in that way.” He likes to call it his Forrest Gump moment. Finn and I moved the 2×2 Expedit bookshelf from Gus’ room into Finn’s room and positioned it under the bunk bed. We stocked it full of his favorite books and record collection. Right now his favorite jam is the California Raisins record, but he calls it “The Bean Band,” obviously. Overall, the room is nowhere close to being done, my mind and body only have time for finishing (ha!) the kitchen, and until then everything else falls by the wayside. I organized the “play side” of Finn’s bedroom as best I could, but there is still a lot more that needs to be done before this room has officially moved on to the next phase of its life. There needs to be a lot of editing, a bit maturing, and thoughtful furniture and art placement. For now, this is how it will sit. Isn’t he the best? So dedicated to making this bed. I love him.

Okay, I’ll fess up, I think I may be more excited about the new bunk bed then the boys are. Gus does say “wow” when I show him pictures of it, and Finn is pretty stoked, but really, I’m the one who thinks this will be awesome. We just ordered the “Perch Bunk Bed” from Oeuf this weekend. It’s on backorder and won’t be available to ship until mid-October, but that’s cool, we can wait. I love Oeuf products, the “Sparrow” crib we purchased from for the kids 5 years ago has been wonderful. It’s held up really well through the two kids, plus I love the changing table that rests a top the crib (anchored by straps of course). Oeuf has it figured out when it comes to beauty and function. So when it was time to purchase the bunk bed I was more than happy to patronize Oeuf again. Our boys love hanging out together; they enjoy each other, they play well, they look out for one another, and they have lots of fun. When we asked Finn if he would want to share his room with Gus, he quickly responded, “yeah, and maybe we could get a bunk bed too”. The boys have never slept in the same room together, because Gus is still in the crib in his room. Gus is more than ready to get into a big kid bed though, and wishes he could crawl into bed with Finn every night. The time to get Gus sleeping in a bed and the kids sharing a room is now! We have some time before the bed arrives, giving us some wiggle room when it comes to pulling the boys’ room together. One of the biggest things we have to do is merge all the boys’ stuff, organizing clothes and purging toys, something that has been needed to be done forever. It’s lucky for us that our boys are older than all of our friend’s kids, we’ve got easy hand-me-down targets. We’d love for the boys to have a few years with each other in their room bonding and learning how to be good brothers. I secretly want them to chat and keep each other awake at night, scheming about kid adventures. I think sharing the room will get them into more trouble then I wish to admit, but it will all be good brotherly bonding […]

We’ve been talking for awhile about the boys sharing a room once Gus grows out of his crib, (which should be coming to an end around the fall). There are lots of reasons for the boys to share a room, but the main one is because they want to. At least Finn wants to, we only suppose Gus does, because if he had it his way he would follow Finn around 24/7. I never had a sibling of the same gender, but I did have a brother, and we did share a bunk bed for a few years. I don’t know if I would say that it brought us closer, but I’d like to think that two boys sharing a room would create a bond for them as they grow up. This sharing a room thing doesn’t have to be for forever either. We’ll save Gus’ old room using it as a guest room in the interim, and it will be ready for him to move back into if the kids decide to split. Finn’s room is pretty large and when it was built a hundred years it was definitely set up for kids to share. The entry door is right in the middle of the room. The windows are also smack dab in the middle. On either side of the door there are symmetrical light fixtures (to sit above twin beds) and identical closets, both housing built in toy boxes. The room was meant for kids to share! Finn has wanted a bunk bed for a long time. He sleeps on a cool old bunk bed every time we visit the cabin, and he thinks it’s the greatest thing ever, cause it is when you are 5! Even though the room is meant to have two twin beds on either side, we’re planning on having the bunk bed make its home on one side of the room, leaving the other side for toys and playing. And we have a back up plan, just in case they become teenagers and decide they don’t want to have a bunk bed anymore we’d like them to be able to separate the bunk beds and create spaces on either side of the room. I also don’t expect them to share a room forever either, unless they want to, but I think having two beds in that room would be perfect for sleepovers down […]

I was so excited on Monday when I noticed Finn’s room had been featured in an article on Ohdeedoh. I had just posted some photos on Flickr of his room a month-or-so ago after a cleaning day with the intentions of blogging it in the near future, and I guess with a push from Ohdeedoh, the future is now. So here is a quick tour around Finn’s big kid digs. First off, Finn’s room is pretty large. It is obvious that when the house was built 100 years ago this room was made to be the home for two kids. The room is 100% symmetrical, there are two light fixtures on the ceiling with their own light switches, there are two closets (1 slightly larger) on either side of the room, and there are two built-in toy boxes inside those closets. So seriously, If this room ever needs to fit 2 kids, it can. For now, I have split Finn’s room up into two different sides, a toy/book/activity side, and a sleeping/naptime side. Pictured above is the much more exciting of the two. Finn has a low Expedit bookshelf which houses all his favorite Fisher Price Little People, his collection of snow globes & music boxes, stuffed animals, toys, trains and a stash of sheets for forts. On the wall we have mounted two Ribba shelves from Ikea where Finn can have access to all his favorite books. He’s also got his art easel for coloring, and his oh-so-cool Tip-N-Rok chair for chillin’ (given to him by his Aunty Roonz), so the kid is set. A close up of his collections. I bought these Little People when Finn was a little person mostly for my own selfish reasons, but these have quickly become a favorite of Finn’s. He prefers them over almost all of his other toys. They have stood the test of time after 30+ years, I will vouch, I still love playing ’em too. And in case you were wondering, NO they are never this organized. Here is the much more boring, sleeping side of Finn’s room. We were able to give him our old Malm bed from Ikea this winter when we upgraded to a much needed queen. It’s nice and low to the ground for him, so it’s easy for him to get in out, plus we were able to re-use some of our old duvets […]
