Hey Team! I didn’t mean for that break to be so long. I’ve been struggling with some SADz and my motivation and focus has been lackluster these past few weeks. I’m so looking forward to a break in the weather. The snow and shoveling is relentless and a constant reminder of how much has to change in order for spring to get here. I know there has been lots of snow all over the country and it really is debilitating....

Hmm, I don’t know what it is, maybe that two-and-a-half-month remodeling of the basement or could it be that my kids were making huge messes all summer long, but somehow my house is chaotic! I just want one of those houses that looks pretty, put together, and organized all the time, is that too much to ask? When the kids were younger I was so good at tidying up daily and staying on top of the ins and outs of the house, but right now I feel like it’s just gotten so away from me. How do I get it back? Lack of motivation aside (which honestly has been plaguing me lately), I need to just make a list and stick to it. Not just some puny to-do list, but like a full on punch list that includes all the minutia that drives me crazy and is just begging to be addressed. For example, messy cupboards in the kitchen, chipped paint on the cabinets, the dust between radiators and paint drips on molding that need to be sanded and repaired. I want this house to feel like the house we have worked so hard for and not the through-it-in-a-pile-and-don’t-think-about-it space that it is now. I’m starting with my garage and my living room. The garage was stacked and packed with a bunch of stuff that we had been storing from the basement. Earlier this week I pulled all that stuff out from the garage and placed it in the middle of my backyard and have been slowly picking my way through it. I also attacked the living room as seen in these pics. I pulled out all the furniture and rearranged it, cleaned everything including the radiators, woodwork, and upholstery on the furniture. It feels so good to start this process and gives me encouragement to soldier on. If you guys are cool with it, I might just share with you some of these minor victories over the next few weeks. Maybe you guys are feeling the itch too, and maybe we can all get in and really clean up our houses together?? Tell me what you think? Feel free to post or send pics too. I’d love to see what you guys are getting into.

What up people? Not much around here. I’ve been chatting about gardens for a solid three months now, I think I finally got it out of my system. I mean, I’m still going to be outside whenever I can during the summer, but for the first time in months I’m finally becoming able to focus on what’s happening inside. I’ve really been digging the look of my living room lately. In the summertime we get to enjoy this lush backdrop of grape vines through the windows that are growing on my neighbors house. It’s so pretty, and I miss it so much when it gets all dumb and decides to not be green in the winter. Besides the changing of the seasons and what not, there has been one big change in the living room that I was too embarrassed to share with you earlier. I’m still not actually sharing photos of it because it was ugly and gross, just take my word for it. During Christmas we moved the furniture around so that we could place the tree in front of the window. The TV got moved to the opposite wall, and after the tree came down the boys voted for the TV to stay in it’s new place. They said it made everything seem “roomier.” I was never a big fan of the new arrangement, when you entered the room you came face-to-face with our TV. Whatever, I decided to be a team player and live with it for a bit, and a bit turned into six months. After ignoring the new arrangement for months I couldn’t take it’s uncoolness any longer. We recently got cable after being perfectly happy with our chromecast and antenna combo because my husband has a new-weird-side-job writing about sports for Rolling Stone (fer real, you should read it – it’s funny). He needed to get the cable to have access to the ESPN and stuff. Anyway, that meant that I got to move the furniture back last week so that the TV could be close to the cable outlet, and now I like my living room again. I can’t believe I lived with it that way for so long, but there were so many other distractions like finishing the makeover in the upstair sunroom, gardening and fixing up the outside that I just forgot about it. Never again.

Hey guys! I mentioned last week that I was just dying for some green in my life, I wasn’t kidding. I was desperate. Last Friday the weather warmed up enough that I could safely take a trip to the local nursery without having to worry about plants freezing on the drive home. I had a little bit of credit (part of a rewards program) at a nursery near my mom’s house, so the kids and I met up with Grammy and made a date out of it. The greenhouse was dead and the kids got to run around like crazy happy people. It was nice for all of us to spend an hour in a warm humid, lush environment. For those of you who don’t know, a nursery in the middle of winter is the closest us Minnesotans can get to tropical weather without having to hop on a plane. I loaded up on plants, buying a bunch of stuff in the less expensive $6 pots, plus I had a $20 credit (yayer)! I love ferns and for the most part they tend to do well in my house. I also grabbed some succulents for my sunnier window spots because I adore them and can neglect them. Instead of peppering plants throughout the house I made a collection of them in the windows of my living and dining room. I love the look of plants congregated in a window reaching out for some winter sunlight. Home feels so much better now, I think I might be able to actually survive this whole winter thing. I love Maiden Hair ferns, and they have been so hard to find lately. There were quite a few small M.H. ferns at the nursery and I came home with two of them. I tend to accidentally kill these guys – they are super finicky and even though I dote on them constantly, I always end up going a day more than I should between watering, and then blamo, dead. It’s probably not the best relationship, I love ’em and kill ’em, but they are so lush and feathered I just can’t resist. So when I found these guys at the nursery, I bought two, cause you know I’ll be lucky if one survives. I used to have a bunch of “Mother-in-Law’s-Tongue” plants when I was a young 20-something. I haven’t had one in at least […]

Yo buddies! I ordered living room furniture, can you hardly believe it? My folks took the kids on Saturday and me and Jeff got to go out and try on all the sofas. It was pretty fun, and scary, and overwhelming, and brain scrambling. After thinking I had it narrowed down to a few sofas we had last minute self doubt and considered this Sabine sofa for a bit. Although it’s beautiful (and super comfy), it’s not really what I had in mind with all this planning and after a lunch break, we decided to go with our gut and choose the Andre! Then we had to pick the chair, it was between the Cole and the Murray chairs. Although I think I like the Murray a bit better, it was time for a change and to minimize the size of the chair in the corner. The Murray was similar in size and shape to what we have now and I think the living room would really benefit from something a bit more petite, which the Cole provides with the low profile arms, and a mid century look. Don’t even get me started on fabric selecting. Another thing that I thought would be fairly easy, was pretty difficult. We went with a medium gray the sofa and a off white/light gray for the chair. I was hoping for something a bit more adventurous, but this is what worked. We still need to settle on this rug thing, and I think our decision might be being made for us. It appears that Ikea’s online site no longer is showing the Stockholm rug. Did they finally discontinue it? Wouldn’t that be perfect timing? We might just have to go with Souk in that case. Decisions will be made on that soon too, as this Sofa and Chair will be arriving in about 8 weeks. Totally can’t wait. In other news, my kids are terribly sick, like in a seriously bad way. Gus (the little guy) has Pneumonia, double ear infection, and pink eye. I’m gonna try and keep the posts coming but there is a chance that you may not see me much this week. Heads up.

Hey Guys, I’m still obsessing over the final plans for the living room. If you’ve been reading along you know that I’ve been compiling style boards for potential sofa, rug, and chair candidates as we’re in the market for some new living room pieces. I’ve realized that there are like a million combinations of furniture pieces that could work together for our living room. This of course is driving me insane, and for my own mind-processing-powers, I decided to lay it all out there in one nice animated gif. It’s a weird way to solve a problem, I know. BUT, doing this I discovered that my favorite chair, sofa and rug combination made themselves quickly apparent. So it worked! I still haven’t narrowed it down to “I know exactly what I want” but I have a really good idea of what I am looking for. For example, I realized that I really like that Stockholm rug, and it works as an inexpensive stop-gap option from now until when the kids are older. When that day comes along we might be able to get a way with a light colored rug like the Souk (let’s hope). I totally love the lighter colored furniture, like LOVE-LOVE it, and I’m going to try my hardest to find a fabric that is stain resistant. Maybe we won’t be getting the white chair, but the light gray sofa would be perfect. We’ll see if there is a fabric that will fit the bill when we start testing out furniture in the coming weekend R&B trips. Of course, on the bottom right of my cool gif above you can see the static fixtures to the room; the teal paint color, a plant or two, my new Martini Side Table from West Elm, the tiny but cool coral lamp I got on Etsy, and an assortment of black and white and colored pillows (these are all from the Fine Little Day Shop). I think my ultimate favorite combo from above is the gray Reese Sofa, white Andre Chair, and Souk Rug, but obviously that is impractical with the kids. Considering something like the Gray Reese Sofa, Blue Jasper Chair and Stockholm Rug would be a good alternative. I also really like that Andre Sofa with the buttons on the back. What’s your favorite combo? I’ve laid it all out below, because I am crazy and sometimes it’s […]

So it’s no secret that the main floor of my house is wood trim city. If the trim was not of a high quality or covered in years of gross varnish I would have painted it white the second we moved in. Instead it’s nice, and pretty, quarter sawn oak with perfect patina so it stays (even though it’s not ideal for this girl). I still need that wonderful contrast that only crisp white trim can give you. Instead of painting the trim white I went nuts and painted every frame (7 of them) in the living room white. I used the same paint that I used for my trim color upstairs, Farrow & Ball’s “All White”. Combining the nice bright white frames with light covered curtains (covering the wood trim of course) gives unity to the room and makes the wood trim not so woody. I also get that contrast that I was dying for between the white frames and my new dark teal walls (full post on the living room coming soonish). The wood trim is no longer the first thing you notice when you enter the house, it really gets pushed to the background and I can totally live with that. Yay for compromise!

Well, I think we’re making progress in our decision making. I really wish the white would work for us because I really do adore it in so many others’ homes, we’re just not feeling it in the living room. I gotta remember that I have my white bedroom, and I get my white, bright and airy fix waking up every morning (dur, except for these lame winter months). That’s the one decision we’ve made. Now that white is out, blue is in. Out of the four color selections that I posted about yesterday I picked two to paint bigger swatches (aka corners) in the living room. We’re giving ‘Galapagos Turquoise’ and ‘Dragonfly’ a test drive. There’s pro’s and con’s to both and thus the decision making continues… *Please feel free to tune me out at this point because I am just a crazy lady who can’t stop thinking, dreaming, and talking about paint colors. I’m sure it’s getting a little obsessive, I know my husband thinks so. Seriously why do they send paint samples in a semi-gloss? Option Numero Uno The ‘Galapagos Turquoise’ is very blue and dark, (this is what I had envisioned the color being) but, now that it’s on the wall I’m just not sure. For one, the dark blue brings out the red in the wood trim, something the old blue complimented and toned down. Secondly it’s pretty dark. I know I wanted it to be really dark, but I’m not sure if I can go that dark. At night it’s almost black. I am however aware of the fact that I might just not be used to this color and that’s why I’m having such an extreme aversion. I mean, I did think in my head that it would be perfect. Option Numero Dos The ‘Dragonfly’ on the other hand is beautiful. It’s way more green than I thought that I wanted, but the second I started putting it up on the wall I started digging it in a major way. It’s reminiscent of the ‘Hallowed Hush‘ (from before) but, it’s slightly greener and much darker and almost the same tone. There is something about a color like this that almost reads as a neutral color would. Whereas the ‘Galapagos Turqoise’ corner only reads as dark blue and will have to be complimented with very specific colors because it is just so blue. The ‘Dragonfly’ […]

I can’t kick the feeling that the new white walls against the dark wood trim remind me of every apartment that I’ve ever rented. Yes, I have enjoyed the light and bright airiness of the white during the days, and it looks especially pretty with with all my other white accents, but I’m still not 100% feeling it. After the daylight disappears and our lamps are turned on it looks very bland and unexciting. Before I ever even painted the room white I had already ordered dark teal samples from Benjamin Moore to try on the walls. I was looking for something slightly more saturated and a little bit darker than the Behr ‘Hallowed Hush’ that we had painted our living room walls prior to last week’s white attack. I was, and still am desperately seeking something fresh and new. Of the four teal swatches above, I’m most drawn to the two on the right, ‘Galapagos Turquoise’ and ‘Dragonfly’. I’m planning on painting bigger swatches on the walls later today and then beginning to weigh all the options before officially deciding on a color. I really like the darkness of the ‘Galapagos Turquoise’, this is exactly what I had envisioned for the walls, but I also love the familiarity of the dragonfly which is only slightly darker then the ‘Hallowed Hush’ we had on the walls prior. I’ll be posting more tomorrow so you can see my progress. I know I probably over analyze these sorts of things, but it’s the only way my brain works when making such big decisions! P.S. Thanks so much for all your comments and feedback on the last post about the white walls, I really appreciate it and it got me thinking about my options in new ways. Appreciate you!

This seems to happen to me every year, the holiday’s end and I get this overwhelming urge to work on a project. The first year I wallpapered my entry way, the second year I de-wallpapered and then re-wallpapered the music room and this year the target is my living room. Here are my reasons/guidelines for the living room redo: Firstly, if you read the blog you know that I’ve been day dreaming about living room furniture. We’re in the market to order a new sofa and chair this spring and to be honest, making the right choice has been stressing me out. In order to make the right decision I needed to investigate all the furniture layout options our living room has to offer. Secondly, being that we just shelled all the money in the world for Christmasy costs we’re feeling a little light in the pockets. Since I obviously can’t resist the urge to jump into a project I have to do it with little to no money. I’ve convinced Jeff that we can afford a gallon of paint. That’s all I’m working with, $50 bucks and nothing else. So like any good thrifty gal you have to work with what you’ve got. I took all of my furniture out of the living room and then started placing it back very slowly. I started by rotating the rug, then putting the sofa on in front of the west facing window, allowing the south facing window to hang out in all it’s sunny glory. I moved the chair from one corner of the room to the opposite corner and then placed the coffee table back in front of the couch. Now behind the couch is our radiator with built in radiator cover. I decided to use that like a sofa table bringing height to the candles and vases behind the ouch by stacking books below them. So there’s the no-cost furniture rearrangement. It looks great! This is the way that it should always have been. The space feels so much bigger, and this new layout could actually allow for a small chaise sectional if we wanted! Next problem of course is the walls. Although I love my teal blue ‘Hallowed Hush’ walls, they are overstaying their welcome. I’ve been living with them for 5 years spanning 3 different houses and apartments, I just feel like it’s time for a change. […]

Well this post is a follow up to my sofa post from last week. I’m still thinking about new furniture options for our living room. Our current arm chair is in even worse shape then the sofa. It’s saggy, stained and sorry-ass-lookin’. The chair, like our sofa, also came from Room and Board, but unlike the sofa, was purchased in the default-off-the-rack fabric and it hasn’t held up well. Not only is it a light khaki color, but it’s a fabric that just doesn’t clean up! I’ve tried fabric cleaners, steam vacuums, and magic tricks, but the stains just spread. It’s a mess, and a total embarrassment. I cover the seat with a blanket. SERIOUSLY SO GROSS. So duh, it’s been decided, we should probably get a new chair too. I would prefer to get something with low or narrow arms, or heck, just go straight-up armless. The chair will make it’s home in the corner of the living room and I want it to be the type of piece that doesn’t take up a lot of room visually but is still comfortable to lounge in and watch TV, because we LOVE TV. Here are a few of my fav options: 1 Anthropologie Rhys Chair in Caribbean Blue Leather 2 Crate and Barrel Petrie Leather Chair 3 Eames Upholstered LCM Plywood Lounge Chair from Design Within Reach 4 West Elm Everett Upholstered Chair 5 Bertoia Diamond Lounge Chair from Design Within Reach 6 Crate and Barrel Donegal Chair Some of these chairs are insanely out of our budget but I had to post them. Even though they are way expensive they are still mighty fine looking. Some of these chairs are NOT super comfy for lounging like the Eames chair, but I was thinking that it might be a good fit if we do decide to go for the chaise sectional sofa. If we choose to go sectional stylez we would need something that was smaller scale seating for the corner of the room to balance out the size of the sofa. I love the Anthropologie chair but I don’t think it would fit very well with what I’ve got going on. I think it’s totally amazing though, so I had to include it in this post. I’m all about the shape of the crate and barrel chair but wish it had more fabric options, don’t know if I’m ready […]

Oh man, I totally got all nerdy yesterday. After watching 2 episodes of Secrets from a Stylist I felt inspired to pretend I was a stylist (yeah right.) Anyway I went around and found all my pillows and tchotchkes set them all out in a pile and then practically put them back in the same spots I found them in. Also, I would never leave that sheepskin on the coffee table, that would just be weird and Jeff would laugh at me. I guess I’m just not there yet. Anyways, then I got my camera out and decided I would try my hand at taking some vignettes. Do I ever take vignette style photos? Answer: Barely ever. What I did discover, sometimes photos can make your stuff look way better than it does in real life. Also, vignettes are cool because you, the viewer, have no idea that there are toys and other crap all over this living room, you just can’t see it.

I was spending some time updating my backup hard drive the other day (3 years in the making) when I came across some real estate photos of our old loft we used to own when we were crazy enough to live in Saint Paul (sorry saint paul). It inspired me to do a post about the Behr paint color “Hallowed Hush” because I’ve gone nuts and used it in all of three places we’ve lived in, including the loft. The loft was the first place we used it, I was looking for a color that would compliment the modern kitchen with its stainless steel appliances, modern white cabinets, and its industrial shiny aggregate concrete floors. Hallowed Hush was the color I stumbled upon. It wasn’t our original intention to paint the walls hallowed hush, we previously had the kitchen painted aqua and had to tone it down a bit when put the place up for sale. I actually ended up falling in love with the color and decided to use it in the living room of the rental house we moved into in the Fall of 2008. Hallowed Hush has always reminded me of the cliche country blue you used to see all the time in the 80’s, something a la the set of Full House, uh huh, you know what I’m talking about. Luckily for me though, it looks pretty great with modern and mid century furnishings. It was only natural that when we moved to our new house in Minneapolis that I had to give it a whirl there too. I had a gallon left over so it was no big deal to me if it wasn’t going to work out, I was really unsure it (or for that matter anything) was going to look good with the wood trim. Honestly, we had taken it from a super modern loft to a somewhat updated Minneapolis rental, to a 100 year old relic with virgin woodwork up the wazoo. Thankfully it also rules in this place too. I think the key to making it work is to fill the room with our favorite modern furnishings. Personally I appreciate the juxtaposition of the old and new and I wouldn’t have it any other way. So there you have it, Hallowed Hush & Me in a nut shell, I imagine it will be around for awhile.
