Okay, I’ll fess up, I think I may be more excited about the new bunk bed then the boys are. Gus does say “wow” when I show him pictures of it, and Finn is pretty stoked, but really, I’m the one who thinks this will be awesome. We just ordered the “Perch Bunk Bed” from Oeuf this weekend. It’s on backorder and won’t be available to ship until mid-October, but that’s cool, we can wait. I love Oeuf products, the “Sparrow” crib we purchased from for the kids 5 years ago has been wonderful. It’s held up really well through the two kids, plus I love the changing table that rests a top the crib (anchored by straps of course). Oeuf has it figured out when it comes to beauty and function. So when it was time to purchase the bunk bed I was more than happy to patronize Oeuf again. Our boys love hanging out together; they enjoy each other, they play well, they look out for one another, and they have lots of fun. When we asked Finn if he would want to share his room with Gus, he quickly responded, “yeah, and maybe we could get a bunk bed too”. The boys have never slept in the same room together, because Gus is still in the crib in his room. Gus is more than ready to get into a big kid bed though, and wishes he could crawl into bed with Finn every night. The time to get Gus sleeping in a bed and the kids sharing a room is now! We have some time before the bed arrives, giving us some wiggle room when it comes to pulling the boys’ room together. One of the biggest things we have to do is merge all the boys’ stuff, organizing clothes and purging toys, something that has been needed to be done forever. It’s lucky for us that our boys are older than all of our friend’s kids, we’ve got easy hand-me-down targets. We’d love for the boys to have a few years with each other in their room bonding and learning how to be good brothers. I secretly want them to chat and keep each other awake at night, scheming about kid adventures. I think sharing the room will get them into more trouble then I wish to admit, but it will all be good brotherly bonding […]

Hey Guys! Remember back in March when I posted about helping my friends Beak & Cam get the nursery together for their soon to be arriving baby girl? Well, we’re still at it. Cam and Erin (aka Roonz, aka Roonstuff) and myself got together last night and whipped this room into shape. In a few short hours (fueled by delicious lasagna) we assembled the crib and changing table, painted the paneling and hung up some artwork! Yeah team. It was awesome to get so much done in such a short amount of time. The downside of course is there is still so much left to do. Don’t worry Cam! We’ll get this done before that little girl shows up! We’ve only got a few short weeks left to finish the room up. We are entering the “final touches phase”, so that’s pretty good progress. Here’s a list of the things still left to do: &#9660 Hang Wooded Blackout Blinds &#9660 Hang Curtain Rods &#9660 Hang Curtains &#9660 Install Curtain Tie Back &#9660 Install Floating Bookshelves &#9660 Style & Accessorize Shelves with Vintage Books and Artwork &#9660 Hang Remaining Artwork &#9660 Crib Mattress &#9660 Crib Sheets &#9660 Install Switch Plate &#9660 Changing Pad &#9660 Changing Pad Cover &#9660 Purchase Storage For Under Changing Table &#9660 Acquire a Crocheted Throw &#9660 Crib Bedding/Quilt (Grandma is all over that) &#9660 Make a Bird Mobile I’ve updated the moodboard to reflect the direction of the nursery. When we finish I’ll do a whole huge post with sources and all. For now, if you have questions, leave a comment, I’d be happy to get back to you. Share this...
It was my intention when I started this post to update you on some functional storage solutions that I had come up with for my little guy’s little nursery. Then I decided that maybe it would be more helpful for any future moms out there to give you my two cents about how the nursery functions. What I like, what I don’t, what I’ve changed and what I’ve added over the last year. A Sorry Excuse For a Photo. First of all, earlier this week it looked like a onesie explosion up in here. I quickly ran out of storage for the little dude when Finn outgrew ALL of his clothes and Gus was not ready to grow into them yet. Plus I had an over-flowing pile of onesies and baby outfits that Gus was just outgrowing. This space needed some severe tidying ASAP. I went out and got a new Malm dresser from IKEA and put it in the back of his closet under his hanging clothes. It matches the other dresser in his room but is slightly shorter. We got the three drawer style for the closet instead of four. I figure if he ever wants move the dresser into his bedroom area when he’s older it will match his other chest of drawers. This dresser is solely for all of the clothes that Finn has outgrown and is waiting for Gus to grow into. It’s all organized by size and type – shorts, pants, long and short sleevers. So glad I finally did this, I should’ve done it a long time ago. It feels good to be organized. I also just recently ordered up Gus this cool ombre-esque crushable yellow hamper. I know, I know: one year deep and no hamper? We did so much of Gus’ changing downstairs on the living room floor or up in our bedroom that it really wasn’t super necessary for him to have his own hamper until just recently. Other things to note about this closet set up: there is a pile of Bum Genius cloth diapers on top of that dresser and as of last week they are no longer being used. What happened? Gus recently started peeing through them constantly and no matter what method or approach I tried I just couldn’t lessen the times per day that I changed his diaper along with his entire outfit. Now let […]

I’m really excited about this post! Some of my dearest friendthrens in the whole world, Cam & Beak (legendary hip hop producer) are having a baby this July. That means their girl babe and my Gus will be less than a year apart!!!! So excited about this. Cam is in charge of this nursery while Beak is out on tour and asked me for some nursery advice, and you know me, I was happy to oblige. I’m going to have a few upcoming posts of the progress of their new nursery so you can see it come together step-by-step. Let’s start at the beginning. Cam has a good start on this room, she’s already gone ahead and painted the walls the palest and mintiest blue-green color and has had the trim painted white. It’s looking fresh and new except for the beadboard on the far wall. We both agreed that had to get painted white asap. She has already collected a few great pieces of artwork and picked up this awesomely amazing black rocker with black & white gingham fabric on craigslist for a song. Look what else, she’s totally on board with the graphite grey knitted pouf from CB2. The pouf in in the nursery phenomenon is becoming super popular, but for good reason, they are awesome, soft and comfy. One of my favorite parts of the room already is the black window sashes. They were black before she even started this project – Cam lucked out. I think they will be come such a great feature and will help this room come together. The color palette is so perfect for a girl baby, minty green, with yellow, and pink accents set off by black and white trim. Here is a very simple guide for the room. Cam and I spent Saturday afternoon at Ikea scouting out some furniture pieces. We wanted to start by laying out the floor plan and them move forward with accessories etc. Cam really wanted to have a lot of storage in the room so we really took some time to consider how furniture pieces would function. As always, we went for the Expedit shelf from Ikea. Expedit is functional with a capital “F”. That’s right, I get passionate about my Ikea. It’s a super modular piece and can be transformed over the life of their room. We both decided wall shelving would be […]

So do you guys remember back in May when I was freaking out about what kind of chair to get for the nursery? Well I thought I would put my two cents in and let you know how I feel about it now. After much debate I decided to go ahead and order rocker legs for my H-Frame vintage Eames chair off of ebay and to accompany the rocker I purchased a grey knitted pouf from CB2 to increase the overall comfort level, and guess what?? I am totally happy with how things turned out! The rock on the Eames chair is really nice, that’s my favorite part about the whole thing, a nice smooth rock. There is obviously not a high neck/head rest on this chair, but that’s okay, I haven’t found myself needing it at all even on the most tiredest of nights. I actually think not having a place to rest my head keeps me more awake and alert for those late night feedings. The arms are in a good spot for me too, I think it’s actually really comfortable. I usually rest my arms and cradle Gus while I feed him a bottle. This also worked really well for while I was nursing too. The only thing I would change is possibly purchasing a small sheep skin from Ikea or cushion to sit on. There’s nothing like getting a baby to sleep only to wake him because your thighs are stuck to your chair. Not a cool mom move at all. The grey pouf from CB2 is also awesome, it is the perfect size and does and great job of being a foot rest. It rocks with the rocker and make the rocker feel even more glider like. I love it. That’s not the only awesome thing about this pouf, did you know it also become a makeshift step stool? Every morning Finn pushes it over to the edge of the crib, climbs up and looks in to say good morning to his bro. I think it was a great purchase and would recommend it to anyone that was looking for a super functional nursery piece. Also, the best part is that I LOVE THIS FURNITURE, so when Gus gets older and doesn’t need a rocking chair in his room anymore I can take it back and incorporate it in other rooms in the house. So […]

We’re getting there, slowly but surely. The new baby’s room is almost done, just a few more items to hang on the walls and a handful of things to sort through and put away and this kid’s room will be good to go. One of the new additions to the room is the quilt hanging over the crib. My Grandma helped me assemble this “red cross” style quilt and then she did the hard work, the beautiful top-stitching. We’ve also finally (long story) added the vintage Eames chair with new rocker base and the grey pouf. As you can see, the color of the chevron yellow and white curtains doesn’t seem to compete with the colors in the quilt like I thought it would. All the different shades of yellow work quite well with each other and I am more than happy with the results. Here’s a close-up of the quilt hanging over the side of the crib. We tried to do a gradient with the crosses putting the darkest yellow in one corner and the lightest yellow in another. In this picture you can see all the time consuming top stitching that went into this crib sized blanket. Here is the backside of the quilt. I had been saving this Optic Blossom pattern from Amy Butler for sometime, and wanted to use it on my baby girl’s quilt, so when I found out my baby girl was really a baby boy I couldn’t help myself. I had fallen in love with the fabric and decided that the colors were neutral enough to use for my little boy too. The backside is as sweet as the front, and I hang it both ways from the crib. And lastly the vintage Eames rocker with the new rocker base. I had ordered the rocker base from a manufacturer on eBay for a cool $95 bucks but the cost wasn’t worth the hassle. They sent a frame with incorrect dimensions and then another that had been banged up so badly in the mail that it had to be manhandled in order to attach it to the fiberglass base. Now that everything has been put together it works quite well. The rock of the chair is better than expected, nice and smooth, and when used with the pouf foot rest it feels like you are gliding in a glider. I think this was the […]

I am so proud of these curtains! I love them, and I was able to sew them with minimal swears and mistakes. I think I am getting better at this sewing thing. They hang perfectly, are the perfect length, the patterns match up and they are lined. Here’s a close up – check out the grommets. Adding the grommets was the last stage of making the curtains and it was a bit scary cause I had to do some math (eesh), AND I had to cut holes in my oh so perfect masterpieces. It all worked out in the end though, not a single screw up or math error. Just showing off how blackoutable these curtains really are. The baby’s room can go from sunniest room in the house to total darkness in seconds! I wish I had this luxury when Finn was a babe, I bet I could’ve gotten a few more naps in. I think my mail lady is starting to get annoyed with me because packages from Etsy are showing up every day now. I love these whale and bear screen prints with the yellow background. I think they will hang over the baby’s crib. This too is from Etsy, a vintage looking bus roll featuring all the essential bed time duties. I was able to custom order this one and added a few lines of my own, such as “GET BUGGED” which is Finn’s way of saying “Snug as a bug in a rug.” Hopefully he will pass a few of his weird phrases on to his brother. And here is Finn hanging out in the nursery, we do this sometimes as all of our little seedlings are growing in the window as you can see in the first photo above. He always finds a project to do on the pouf, which is exactly what I was hoping for. It will make a good foot rest, AND it will encourage my number 1 dude to come visit me and the baby when he’s not too busy. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Slowly but surely, I will have this “new kid’s room” thing figured out. First of all whoever decided that it should be near impossible to photograph yellow on grey? I don’t know where my skills are lacking, but I’m just not able to get this image to be true. Anyhow, this is the problem; I am currently having a little issue with the fabric I ordered to make curtains out of, I’m totally into the pattern, I think I am secretly a little obsessed with chevron patterned items these days but I am just not 100% on the color. It seems to be a little bright goldenrod and I was expecting a more true yellow color. The question is, would you just say screw it and use it anyway cause it’s probably close enough, or would you start over with something new? Here is the fabric against the grey wall and next to some fabric swatches I used in the quilt. Here is a more accurate description of what the fabric actually looks like. For reference, here is the most recent version of where I am with the planning and purchasing, things have changed a bit, and I’ve settled on some art work. The quilt is nearly finished and I am using this Amy Butler Optic Blossom fabric on the back of it, which I adore. I’ve got some items that are more yellow-lemon yellow, and a lot of my fabric is more of a true yellow. What do you think, does the cornhusk-chevron fabric work? Lemme know! Share this...
I’m trying to be as economical as possible when it comes to planning this nursery. With unpaid maternity leave to look forward to, we have to pinch every penny for the next 18 weeks. That being said, I was trying to figure out the best way to get a cool and comfortable rocking chair into my life, and I think I’ve come up with a solution. A few years back I picked up a pair of Eames shell arm chairs for $150 bucks from my old friend, Craigslist. I’ve had them all over my house and they currently make their homes in separate rooms. One of the chairs has ended up in my entry way and has been keeping my new desk company. The other has been floating around from room to room and is in bad need of a home. I put two and two together and figured this might be the time to turn this little yellow chair from an ‘H’-frame-base into a rocker and give it some purpose! Here is a photo of the chair in it’s current state for reference. It didn’t take long to come up with a list of sellers on ebay that sell a rocker base for these Eames chairs for less than $100. Might I remind you that to buy a rocker shell chair new from DWR would cost $479. This is by far the cheapest solution I have come up with so far. I’ve had an RSS search set up on craigslist for months now looking for the perfect chair or rocker with no success, the closest other option I have come to is this mid-century style chair from Urban Outfitters selling for $289 and from the reviews I’ve read it doesn’t seem to even rock that well even though it looks great, and plus I am worried that it will be a little oversized for this little babies, little room. So I’ve figured out the “cheap” factor, but what do I do about the comfortable factor? For me, I’ve always thought that the shell chairs were comfortable chairs, but I’ve never had to sit at one at 3 AM while attempting to nurse a tiny little baby. I’m just not sure how well that will work out. I’ve noticed that there have been plenty of parents that have choose the Eames rocker for their nurseries but I’ve never heard how […]

Yep, that’s right: we’re gonna have 2 BOYS in this house soon. It took a few days to get my head wrapped around the idea of having two sons in my life. I really had a feeling that this one was going to be a girl, so I was a little disappointed when we found out it wasn’t. But as the days go on, I get more and more amped about the idea of having another guy in my life. I’m looking forward to all of the adventures we’re going to have. Finn and I have so many already; I can’t imagine the fun of doubling that up. I’ve been antsy to get started on a baby project. I felt like everything was hinging on the outcome of girl or boy. Now that we know what we’re getting into we’ve been able to start preparing for this new dude. Last weekend we conquered the first project on a list of many, we painted the 3rd upstairs bedroom from mustardy tan, to a soft light grey. What a difference a coat of paint makes, as you can see below. Don’t mind all the junk in that first photo; we’ve been using this room as a storage closet for old-baby-gear ever since we moved in. We always planned on having another kid and were saving this “junk room” for the day we’d have a new babe in our life. Now we have to go through the daunting task of sorting through piles of old onesies and trying to repair baby swings with missing pieces. Cleaning messy spaces aside, we were able to get almost all of the painting done. We still have to patch some holes in the ceiling and repaint it white but we’re getting there. We didn’t stop with just paint though. We were also able to get Finn’s grey Oeuf crib set up and it looks great next to the grey walls. And no, this room was not the location of a domestic crime scene—that blue tape on the floor outlines the homes of a new dresser and bookshelf/window bench. Did you notice the new light fixture? Jeff was a pretty handy dude too, and installed this new pendant lamp from Ikea almost entirely by himself. We’re becoming pretty nimble little home owners ’round these parts. And here is a hint of what this room could be. Light grey […]

Well it’s getting pretty obvious, at this point all I can think about is my new house. Throw crafting and knitting out the window, if I have free time I am currently spending it doing one or more of the following:A: On the internet scouring craiglist for new furniture B: Day dreaming about furniture I can’t afford C: Packing boxesORD: Doing dorky things like designing rooms in a house that I don’t even live in. So Finn’s room might and hopefully will end up with some of the elements from the above sketch. I am slowly starting to realize that my color palette constantly consists of blues, greens and oranges, is this bad? Do other people design their houses in the same way, or is it all going to end up looking the same. Granted they are all different tones and hues of these colors. Sometimes orange will be the main color with accents of blue or blue might be the main color with accents of orange. If I am overdoing will someone please speak up and tell me. Until that happens I will continue on this path. Let me ‘splain to you something about my plans… I love the idea of Finn having orange walls in his room. First of all it seems like a good boy/dude color without having to be to traditional, secondly it will be something he can easily grow into as a young boy. We currently own the Oeuf “Sparrow” crib pictured above so that will stay in the room. Part of the reason I love that crib is that it is so versatile, it can grow with Finn through his first few years, and then will be able to grow with his future sibling(s) boy or girl. Not only that grey rules, just ask our grey cat whittier, he is pretty into it. My current favorite idea is to sew Finn some new curtains from this lime green wood grain fabric I found at crafty planet (there is a close-up below.) It’s just the right amount of crazy if you ask me. I’m not sure if the above blue rug from IKEA is the “one” I’ll end up using but I like the color and since it’s from everyones favorite swedish retailer it should be fairly inexpensive. This is the room that will be Finn’s, this is a huge room and will be good […]

In preparation for the arrival of my little baby chicken, Elsa, I decided that I was going to make bumpers for her crib. During a trip to my favorite fabric store with Scoops, I found this pretty pretty fabric by Heather Bailey.I had found some patterns for bumpers and based my bumpers on them. I did decide that these bumpers NEEDED some piping to spiff ’em up a bit. I have never done anything like this before so I conferred with the best source ever for things of this nature, my Grandma. Over a slice of pie, after Easter dinner, she explained to me how to whip up some piping. So that is what I did! I had some left over fabric so I made a matching blanket for this little Babe.Elsa seems to enjoy her crib and she certainly won’t be hitting her head or getting her arms stuck anytime soon. Here are some more photos of Elsa’s nursery. It is such a cozy and relaxing room, I sure hope Elsa thinks so!We got this rocking chair from the Highland Park Guy on Craigslist. It is so great for feedings and reading bedtime stories. The blanket Auntie Scoops made looks super dope on the back of it too. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter
