So, I couldn’t resist making Beak & Cam’s baby an afghan, just like the sunburst blanket I made for Elsa when she was borned. Believe me, I tried to resist, I knew it was going to take a lot of time and I probably should’ve started back in the cold days of winter. It’s totally my duty to bestow blankets on all the cool babies of the world. I couldn’t let Cam’s baby girl not have some sunburst lovin’ too, so here we go! You probably wouldn’t have guessed it but my first post ever on the blog was about the granny square afghan I made for Elsa, and to this day it is the most popular post on the blog, crazy huh? I guess I got some good SEO vibes on that one. Anyway, since I always get tons of questions on it, and since I can’t remember all the details, I thought I’d get more into for this version of the Granny square. For all you crochet nerds out there. My pattern is 90% based off the one seen here by priscillascrochet.net but in the fourth round I double crochet in each crochet from the 3rd round. In the corners I do 3 DBC followed by 3 chain stitches and then another 3 DBC. That’s the trick to getting the diamond patterns in the corners when you join it all together. I’m totally trying something new this time; last time I went for the Cascade 220 yard, but this time I went for the super soft baby yarn, so far so good. I’m using the Loops & Threads Snuggly Wuggly baby sport in White, Soft Yellow, Cool Baby, Candy Pink and Soft Mint. All colors to match the baby’s nursery. I’ll be doing another update as I get further along to go over joining and then I will end with the scalloped border. My goal is to do a square a day, I need 35 squares so that gives me a month, give or take to finish the project. Now we just need to keep that little baby girl cooking while I finish up this blankie.
The Allen fam was confined to our house this weekend. We all came down with the same nasty cold and I was as sick as I had been in a long time. Luckily the weather didn’t make us feel like venturing out too far, and we got to snuggle in and be cozy. I was able to finish a bunch of projects that I’ve been wanting to get done for awhile from the comfort of my couch. I have been scouring craigslist for a mid century style desk for my entryway for over 6 months. Let me just say i’s brutal out there, if you don’t respond within one hour you don’t have a chance, secondly people will steal a desk from you. I had one guy holding a desk for me until I got off work and the next thing I knew I was getting a call saying “oops he sold it.” So I finally found this solid-walnut gem. I enquired about the post from my couch, and had it delivered to my house (via a semi-drunk old guy). Long story short: I love having a desk in this space. It is really an awkward space and making it pretty and functional is a double bonus. Check out these drawer pulls, it was love at first sight. Now that I had my desk I had to finish a few things, one of them being this granny square pillow. I had a few squares left over from Elsa’s blanket, and I needed a reverse side. So I spent a good part of a day finishing off the front and back of the pillow and stitching it together. I am so happy with how it turned out. The pillow has made friends with my Eames chair, and everything is looking good. The reverside of the pillow. One giant granny square. Here’s what my house looks like from the entry way. Through the mirrored door you’ll find the kitchen and straight ahead you’ll see my blue living room, and back in the corner is the hint of my dining room. I am so happy with how things are coming together. I’ve spent so much time this summer focusing on the garden that I neglected the interior. Just a few photos on the wall makes all the difference. Now looking from the other direction, here is the entire entry way. I hope you […]

I made this adorable little hat (and booties not pictured) for Flicka last spring before she was even born, her mom Urs just sent me some photos of Flicka modeling the goods. This hat is just about to be too small for this little lady. Don’t forget that etsy is a great place to look for sewing and knitting patterns, most cost under $5 and are sent to your email via PDF within 24 hours. This is a great resource for last minute gifts. If anyone feels like trying to make this pattern please check out the original post from last March, or buy the patterns here at etsy: Hat Pattern, Booties Pattern Share this...
So this is the stuff I have slowly been working on, I thought maybe if I posted something about it I’d give my self inspiration and motivation to finish it because I don’t know how else I’m gonna do it. These granny squares are destined to become a new pillow for my couch IF I ever finish them. I started my squares because I missed the ease and the speed of crocheting, now I have a new project on my hands. I do heart me some granny squares though. Always and Forever. For the holidays I made two pair of mittens, one pair for Colez and one pair for my Dad. I was jealous of these mittens and wanted to keep them all for myself. Now I am trying to make a pair for myself and what do you know… I can’t finish them. So far I have one mitten down and one to go. And lastly, the sock I used to love is the sock I now hate. I had one of these babies done in October, yes October, I know right? It’s been a long time. At the beginning of January I started the second of what will be two beautiful socks but every time I pick up the needles it is torture. I just want it to be over, soon. Share this...
I’ve finally finished Finn’s ripple blanket and just in time for the cozy fall months too. I started this project in March thinking it would take a few weeks… a few months later I was still working on it and hoping I would finish it in time for his 1st birthday. I didn’t make the birthday deadline but I did make it before the summer was over, a whole 6 months later. I was originally going to be way too ambitious and try and make the afghan so that it could be used as coverlet on a twin sized bed, instead its ended up being big enough to cover a crib mattress, and maybe eventually could be folded across the end of his twin bed. Eames chairs making everything look better. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

This case can be used for one of two things, he can either put his drumstix in here, or his paintstix, or both. Either way he now has a styling new case made with love. Just in case anyone gets confused as to who’s stix case this really is. All rolled up, there is two button holes depending on whether or not Matt is toting a lot of stixs or only a few.
Finally the project that took FOREVER, is finally done and I can snuggle with Bruce in bed. Here he is hanging out on a chair, he looks good in all sorts of rooms in my house. I took the image from the cover on Darkness on the edge of Town I import the image into Adobe Illustrator and turn it into 3 tones, dark grey, light grey and white. And den, I grid it out. I’ve crocheted the background of the pillow in white (85 single crochet stitches across x 85 rows = a really long fucking time.) Then I cross stitch the gridded pattern over the top, and a back and sew it all up. And if anyone was wondering, we did make it into the pit at last week’s Springsteen show, and Rosie came out! It was awesome, thanks Bruce! Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Check it. I was invited to a bachelorette party this weekend, one of the requirements was that you had to bring lingerie for the bride to be. I was kind of panicking about what I would bring since I don’t know too much about lingerie and other pretty things one would wear before they’re about to do it. Jeff came up with the idea that I crochet her some undies. In Jeff’s vision I would put the initials “P” on one boob and “D” on the other (the initials of the brides future husband) and then write the words “vag” across the crotch. I opted not do that, cause I’m classy like that. Here I am modeling the goods. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Guess what? I made a beer cozy for my best beer drinking friend, Jeff “Waff” Allen! This is the first time that I’ve created a crochet project without a pattern, I just guessed how to do it and it worked. Step 1. I start at the bottom. Beer bottles are round so I decided that making a round shaped bottom would probably be a good idea. Step 2: Get authentically Krausened, beer is good to drink while crafting. Step 3: Just keep going round and round. Step 4: I changed it up a little bit by changing the stitch, thus creating a pattern. Step 4: Stop stitching when you get to the top. Step 5: Add your drinking buddies nickname. Success!
Holy Shit, this might be the coolest thing that I have ever made. I know it’s not perfect, but it is doesn’t matter because it is awesome. Caylie loves, LOVES, LOVES, Full House, so I felt it appropriate to give Bob Saget (aka B.Sags) in crochet form for her 24th Birthday. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Slowly but surely I am making progress on Finn’s blanket. I am realizing that, YES, this will take forever. New goal, have it done for Finn’s first birthday in July. So I just discovered a new use for etsy… buying patterns. I bought patterns for both this hat and these shoes. I have been making and remaking these all month. Finn’s not impressed, according to him he has no use for a hat or shoes and he promptly removes them from his head and feet. I also made a secret pair for Bob and Urs’ soon to be little guy or gal. Shhh. A homeade card Finn demonstrates: He agrees, I made the first version too small. The second version is better, but I remake it one more time so that it can have a citron stripe. I discover that dry ice comes with your grocery delivery. Experiments ensue. It’s cold and rainy so I give stew a try, and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever made. Recipe found here pass it on Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

I’ve discovered that yarn can be turned into lots of things; blankets, potholders, scarves and even three dimensional objects like slippers! Holy Shit. This is my latest endeavor, a red house slipper perfect for keeping your feet warm while you’re busy crocheting more slippers. Here’s a view from the top, I even shaved my ankle hairs. I also attempted and failed at creating a “Granny Square” style slipper. These ones make my feet look fat. I like my red one’s better. Share this...
Colez is having a baby in July, and I decide that I should probably make her baby a baby blankie. I am kind of a baby blanket fanatic, I myself still have my own baby blanket after 27 years (I think it’s impressive). As a kid I was very particular about my “GeeGee” and I never let it drag on the ground or get dirty. My mom would wash it for me a “special” way, I had very high standards. Anyway’s I understand the importance of an awesome baby blanket probably better than anyone, so I felt that it was my duty as a good Auntie to make sure that the little chipplette also understands this. I was originally inspired to try and crochet the Granny Square style blanket from a post that I had seen on Apartment Therapy’s Ohdeedoh site. Next I had to figure out how to crochet. I found another useful way to use the internet and I had youtube teach me how to crochet. After a lot of trial and error I was finally starting to feel confident. I found the pattern via an expert crocheter’s flickr page. It’s called a sunburst pattern, here’s a link in case anyone else might be interested in making a sweet ass babe blankie. THE PROCESS The first ten squares! After doing some research on the internets I decided to try out Cascade 220 Superwash wool. The colors are super vibrant, and in my small amount of experience, it seems like a lot of nautral fiber yarns don’t come with so many color options. I was happy with the results. I couldn’t figure out how big to make a baby blanket. In the end I made it the size of my kitchen table. I didn’t make any of the squares the same, but I did make different versions with the same colors. A close-up. Shit Yeah, it’s almost done. I have it all sewed together, the last and most boring step is to tuck in all the loose strings. Updated 02.17.12 I added an extra round to all the squares including a nice little space in each of the four corners. This way when I joined them it created a pretty little star pattern. There was really no rules when it came down to joining the squares together, I did single crochets which created a raised seam on one side. […]
