Poms! Hey e’rebody! I don’t know about you but I have a TON of wonderful people in my life who have July birthdays. If you didn’t know, July is a super trendy month to have a birthday ;) I was having trouble wrapping some gifts earlier this week for Finn’s 4th birthday. Bows were in short supply so I decided to whip up some yarn poms and use them in place of bows. I’m loving the way they turned out. I’ve been totally crushing on the poms my friend Crystal makes for ALL Knitwear hats. Her poms are super cute, so cute that they have infiltrated my brain. I luvre them. So, when I was trying to wrap presents on the fly with kraft paper (aka brown paper bags) I went straight for the yarn bag to try and spiff it up a bit and ended up with these cute pom bows. In case you don’t know how to make a pom, I thought I’d share a quick tutorial with you. Now you can liven up your July bday gifts too. Trace and cut out two donuts I mashed together a few different tutorials but took the most from a tutorial over at prudent baby. First things first, to make a pom you need to cut out two donut rings from cardboard. Being that I suck at drawing circles free hand and I don’t have a compass I traced the bottom of an Ikea glass for the outer ring and a 1 inch button for the inner. YOU DO NOT need to be exact, so don’t stress if it’s not perfect. Begin wrapping Yarn Once you get your two donut shapes put them together side by side and start wrapping a piece of colorful yarn (approximately three feet in length). I work the poms in three foot sections of yarn because any longer than that and it gets difficult. Plus this way you can incorporate a lot of different colors. P.S. you don’t need to tie a knot or anything like that either. I just held the loose end with my left hand and wrapped with my right. Wrap one or more colors Above you can see the I wrapped a first round in orange and then overlapped it with a second color in blue. Feel free to do many layers, the more layers the […]

So, I couldn’t resist making Beak & Cam’s baby an afghan, just like the sunburst blanket I made for Elsa when she was borned. Believe me, I tried to resist, I knew it was going to take a lot of time and I probably should’ve started back in the cold days of winter. It’s totally my duty to bestow blankets on all the cool babies of the world. I couldn’t let Cam’s baby girl not have some sunburst lovin’ too, so here we go! You probably wouldn’t have guessed it but my first post ever on the blog was about the granny square afghan I made for Elsa, and to this day it is the most popular post on the blog, crazy huh? I guess I got some good SEO vibes on that one. Anyway, since I always get tons of questions on it, and since I can’t remember all the details, I thought I’d get more into for this version of the Granny square. For all you crochet nerds out there. My pattern is 90% based off the one seen here by priscillascrochet.net but in the fourth round I double crochet in each crochet from the 3rd round. In the corners I do 3 DBC followed by 3 chain stitches and then another 3 DBC. That’s the trick to getting the diamond patterns in the corners when you join it all together. I’m totally trying something new this time; last time I went for the Cascade 220 yard, but this time I went for the super soft baby yarn, so far so good. I’m using the Loops & Threads Snuggly Wuggly baby sport in White, Soft Yellow, Cool Baby, Candy Pink and Soft Mint. All colors to match the baby’s nursery. I’ll be doing another update as I get further along to go over joining and then I will end with the scalloped border. My goal is to do a square a day, I need 35 squares so that gives me a month, give or take to finish the project. Now we just need to keep that little baby girl cooking while I finish up this blankie.
The Allen fam was confined to our house this weekend. We all came down with the same nasty cold and I was as sick as I had been in a long time. Luckily the weather didn’t make us feel like venturing out too far, and we got to snuggle in and be cozy. I was able to finish a bunch of projects that I’ve been wanting to get done for awhile from the comfort of my couch. I have been scouring craigslist for a mid century style desk for my entryway for over 6 months. Let me just say i’s brutal out there, if you don’t respond within one hour you don’t have a chance, secondly people will steal a desk from you. I had one guy holding a desk for me until I got off work and the next thing I knew I was getting a call saying “oops he sold it.” So I finally found this solid-walnut gem. I enquired about the post from my couch, and had it delivered to my house (via a semi-drunk old guy). Long story short: I love having a desk in this space. It is really an awkward space and making it pretty and functional is a double bonus. Check out these drawer pulls, it was love at first sight. Now that I had my desk I had to finish a few things, one of them being this granny square pillow. I had a few squares left over from Elsa’s blanket, and I needed a reverse side. So I spent a good part of a day finishing off the front and back of the pillow and stitching it together. I am so happy with how it turned out. The pillow has made friends with my Eames chair, and everything is looking good. The reverside of the pillow. One giant granny square. Here’s what my house looks like from the entry way. Through the mirrored door you’ll find the kitchen and straight ahead you’ll see my blue living room, and back in the corner is the hint of my dining room. I am so happy with how things are coming together. I’ve spent so much time this summer focusing on the garden that I neglected the interior. Just a few photos on the wall makes all the difference. Now looking from the other direction, here is the entire entry way. I hope you […]

What better way to celebrate mom’s birthday than a delicious brunch. I think we can all agree the breakfast is the best meal you could ever eat so I did it up big for mom’s bday. Here’s the stats:Homemade Coffee CakeCarmel Rolls from scratchEgg BakeFruitDelicious Bacon from Everett’sAnd Scoops Famous Potatoes Have you ever made coffee cake from scratch? This was my first, and I realize that there is no other way to have a coffee cake unless you bake it yourself. So GOOD! I followed this recipe on epicurious and ended up with the most delicious coffee cake ever. My son now thinks he should have “Cake” for breakfast every day of the week. These things looked pretty awesome but only turned out OKAY. Not enough carmel!!!, I mean what’s the point? Seriously? My mom is one of the lucky ones who get’s to enjoy peony’s at every birthday. My new yard came equiped with one large peony bush that only wanted to make one small flower. These beauties came straight from the grocery store… Insert sad face here. And as promised, a fancy knit dishcloth. I followed this pattern from this very thorough and indepth dish-cloth-pattern site. So there you have it… mom’s birthday in a nut shell. Share this...
OMG I did it, I did it. I got so bored I finally went and found a new project. I am officially back on the knitting wagon. After a few months of fixing up our house and starting new gardens I couldn’t fight the urge to make something. I just found an awesome dishcloth pattern (as far as dishcloth patterns go) and bought some yarn. I am in full on dishcloth mode, yep that’s right, so you better watch out. Everyone better be expecting to get at least one dishcloth. This is for serious. Maybe next I’ll make you potholders… you never know. Here is an example of the goodsphoto from tehrimon on flickr Anyone want to join me? Here is a link to the pattern Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

What can I say, work has been slow and I’ve had a lot of time on my hands (punny, ha!) and so far I haven’t thought of any knitted items to make that would be appropriate for summer wear. However, I will now be mos def be prepared for the winter. Excellent (said in the voice of Wayne Campbell.)
Yay Me! I finally finished these socks!!! Wooohooo. I started the beauties back in November, got off track with other holiday knitting projects and finally I finished them last night. I do love these socks — they look amazing. They are actually too cool. I might have to wear some sort of skirt or something horrible in order to show them off. I am noticing that I somehow made the toes a little differently. I guess I should’ve taken notes while I was making my first sock, but I don’t think I anticipated it taking me almost 4 months to finish. I used a pattern from the book “Knitting Vintage Socks” by Nancy Bush. If anyone out there is interested in making socks or already makes socks but wants some cool patterns to use, please pick up this book. It is awesome. Right now I never want to knit another sock again, BUT I can not resist wanting to knit up all the patterns in this book. So here are the details:Pattern: Child’s First Sock (In Shell Pattern) from Knitting Vintage Socks by Nancy BushYarn: Koigu Premium Merino in MustardNeedles: Size 1 View of the shell pattern from the side.
So this is the stuff I have slowly been working on, I thought maybe if I posted something about it I’d give my self inspiration and motivation to finish it because I don’t know how else I’m gonna do it. These granny squares are destined to become a new pillow for my couch IF I ever finish them. I started my squares because I missed the ease and the speed of crocheting, now I have a new project on my hands. I do heart me some granny squares though. Always and Forever. For the holidays I made two pair of mittens, one pair for Colez and one pair for my Dad. I was jealous of these mittens and wanted to keep them all for myself. Now I am trying to make a pair for myself and what do you know… I can’t finish them. So far I have one mitten down and one to go. And lastly, the sock I used to love is the sock I now hate. I had one of these babies done in October, yes October, I know right? It’s been a long time. At the beginning of January I started the second of what will be two beautiful socks but every time I pick up the needles it is torture. I just want it to be over, soon. Share this...
Part of my December’s blog absence is due to these beauties right here. I’m pretty sure as of December 24th I kind of hated knitting. I’ve been non-stop working on these cranberry socks for my dear old mom’s Christmas gift. The pattern is called “Child’s French Sock” and is from my favorite sock book, Knitting Vintage Socks by Nancy Bush. It should be noted that this is currently also Finn’s favorite book, as the two words he can say very clearly are “Sock” and “Book” so it works out well for him. Let’s not forget about Dad, I whipped these up over a couple of days and they are awesome and warm. Found the pattern HERE. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Mom, if you’re reading this, now would be a good time to close your eyes. This is cool, I bought the yarn from yarnadoodledo on etsy this will be the first time I’ve bought yarn on etsy.
I just realized I never blogged my first pair of socks. Well here they are! Another goal to check off the old bucket list, I am officially now a knitter of socks. Here’s my feet enjoying my new socks. In other sock news, I am currently working on two different pairs. See the truth is, knitting socks can get kind of boring, so I needed to do two different pairs at once in order to make my brain not go crazy. I am working more patterns from the Knitting Vintage Socks book, just like I said I would do. This is the pattern for “Gentleman’s Plain Winter Sock”. In this instance this sock(s) will be worn by this gentlelady. And lastly, the other sock I am working on is this awesome yellow one. I have heart eyes for this pattern. Again, this pattern is from Knitting Vintage Socks and is called “Child’s First Sock in Shell Pattern” FYI: this sock is hard and can only be worked on at home in peace and quiet. I am a newbie when it comes to knitting and I need all the mind concentration I can muster when it comes to working this this “difficult” pattern. Share this...
I finished this hat for Finn right as the flurries began to fall. This is just the perfect thing for him because A: This hat comes fully equipped with a button thus allowing it to stay on Finn’s head, no matter how hard he tries this thing isn’t coming off, and B: It looks awesome, it reminds me of our grey cat Whittier. Again, if anyone is interested in making this sweet hat for your little dude or lady, the pattern is found here @ shescraftiness.blogspot.com Share this...
