The spring is by far my favorite time of year. Us Minnesotan’s savor any and all outdoor time we can get in the warmer months. Every spring season I try to focus on a small space and give it a bit of TLC and this year I have teamed up with All Modern to update a warm and sunny spot in the corner of our deck. I’ve done a lot of updating to our yard and patio at our Minneapolis home, and now my attention is moving towards the cabin...

Ooooh, I’m so excited to share with you guys so many outdoor spaces at the cabin this year! To bring you up to speed, we purchased our Northwoods Wisconsin (aka West Wisco) cabin nearly two years ago. We’ve done a lot of improvements to the interior spaces since moving in August of 2017, and the outdoor spaces were left by the wayside. That period of neglect is over, people! We have so much improving happening in our exterior hang spaces this summer, specifically expanding our lake dock, landscaping and gardening, exterior painting, staining the deck and making the most of our deck views. One of the best spaces of the entire cabin is on our deck overlooking our lake. We have the luxury of being very close to the water since our cab was built over 50 years ago, due to changing building codes it would be impossible to build this close to the water in 2019. Because of our proximity, we have views of our lake from nearly every window and the best is right off our deck.

I had two major assignments, the first was to get the patio really clean. This is our second season with this new patio, and it was looking pretty dingy after sitting under a stack of snow for the last six months. The second, was to build an outdoor coffee table.

This post was made in partnership with NewTechWood. They provided me with the decking for the patio, but all thoughts and opinions are my own. I wasn’t aware of it for a long time, but I recently discovered that our backyard was hiding something amazing from us. This awesomeness was disguised as a concrete slab next to our garage that was probably intended for overflow parking. We are a two car family that fits (very) snugly into our two car garage, so we’d always thought that maybe when our future-teens learn how to drive they’d park whatever hand-me-down beaters we give them in that extra spot. Ultimately, we decided they can park on the street and scrape their own icy windshields like generations of Minnesotan Teens before them. The spare parking started to seem like a waste of very valuable backyard square footage. A few years ago when we had the fence built, we decided that we would fence around this parking slab (in case you are confused it previously had not been fenced in). With the fence in place, the slab was starting to feel like it was becoming a part of our backyard. The kids would ride their tricycles on around in circles, and we’d fill up the pool on the concrete in the summer (which spared my lawn) but most of the time it just sat there. Most of the time it was just a sad and dirty place you walked through on the way to the alley to throw away garbage. After checking a lot of outdoor yard maintenance off the list in previous summers (i.e. fence, roof, paint, stoop, front door), it seemed like a good time to really give that slab some useful purpose! *Queue the airhorn I’m very excited to be able to share with you our new backyard patio! This new outdoor living room area rips, and it needed to exist! We may have maxed out the number of Hang Zones possible in this old house now! I’ve been hinting at the goings-ons of the backyard here and there in my insta-stories (ever heard of it?). I just finished up the final project last week, and am excited to get into all the nitty-gritty details on the stuff I built over the coming weeks. For now lets talk about the main ingredient. The floating decking tile! Did you know floating deck tiles […]

What. Up. I thought this post might come in handy if you’re anything like me and you’re right on the edge of spring, you can’t contain yourself, and you need to just do something outside already! That being said, forgive the fact that there is barely any green going on in these pics – it’s coming! We recently replaced our Nicaraguan hammock. I had received it as a mother’s day prez two years ago and I have loved it. We were really good about bringing the hammock in when it rained the first year, but the second year we kind of let it all go to hell, and by that I mean we just didn’t give any effs when it came to leaving it out in the weather – our bad. Lots of times when you leave a cotton rope hammock out in the rain it’s gonna get mildewed and that’s just what ours did. I tried to clean it with a brush and a gentle detergent warm water mixture which helped, but I should’ve probably been giving it a gentle washing every so often, rather than when it reached the point of no return. Lesson learnt. So, I ordered the exact same ‘mock again (on sale now for 25% off plus use code PATIO10 today for an addish 10% + free shipping), but I promised I would take better care of it. I determined that I needed to do a better job of getting it to a safe and covered place before rain storms. Our old setup was a pain and require a bit of work to get the hammock on and off the stand, I needed to make a new system that was easier. I am also promising to wash my hammock once (at least before I put it away in winter) or twice a season to stay on top of mildew. And lastly, or maybe firstly, I could weather proof it with some Scotchgard outdoor potion to help water bead off and not get absorbed into the fibers of the hammock, thus preventing mildew. *Funny side note: my mom’s maiden names is Miels (pronounced ‘mills’) and her married last name is Deuhs (pronounced ‘dews’ and she always thought it was very funny to threaten combining last names and having us all be called the “MielsDeuhs” – see why I’m so funny? I read on the internets that […]

Dude(tte)s! We are committing to this patio thing! I think it will add tons to our outdoor experience and is gonna look-a real nice! Things that I need to tell you about it are as follows. I have been scouring the internets looking for a realistic option for covering the concrete slab and then I stumbled upon NewTechWood. They sell recycled composite decking in both normal wood slat style as well in a 12″x12″ interlocking tile system. It was the perfect solution to my problem! I reached out to the company and told them about my project and they were happy to send me some tiles if I in turn shared my cool discovery with you guys. “With pleasure”, I said (more on the 2 hour install real soon). The other thing that happened is that after my post about outdoor sectional furniture you guys left me pondering whether or not I should DIY my own or purchase something new. After reading your comments I was very torn, a lot of you guys thought I could make something awesome (which I could’ve probably, I was more concerned about the timeline and cushion assembly) or if I was gonna buy outdoor furniture spend the money and buy something with good fabric and cushions. That’s when my Amazon shopping cart came into play. I had placed the sofa that I most liked in my cart on Amazon as a way to bookmark it. I wasn’t really thinking I’d buy it, I just didn’t want to remove it from my options until I was set on a solution. Sometime later (I’d say a week to 10 days) Amazon offered me a $200 coupon because their robots could tell I was on the fence about it – probably all those times going to my shopping cart but not being able to seal the deal. I couldn’t resist the coupon, the sofa was already marked down nearly 50% it retails for 3k and most other sites wanted around $2300 for it (I think it was from last season) and with the $200 discount, I was able to nab it for $1200. It also had great reviews everywhere, is made by a a company called ae outdoor which is founded by a SCAD designer who thought there was a need for better outdoor furniture (true), and it the cushions are made with sunbrella fabric (top-notch shit).
Alright, I’ve been trying to not think about spring for a long time. I keep trying to enjoy the winter (which I admit, I’ve been really good at this year). The last few weeks have been especially warm, and now that it’s back to stupid cold again, I just can’t. Spring needs to get here already! Anyways, against my husbands wishes, I have been scheming about a dream patio space in our backyard. See more below. Do you guys remember, back when we got the fence installed? We had enclosed a cement slab that had previously functioned as a parking pad and butts up against the garage. Prior to our new fence, this area had not been fenced in before. Being that we were a two car family it seemed like a waste of space to have a good chunk of our potential backyard space be spoken for by a parking spot. Instead we decided that it would be best to include it as part of our backyard (pretty or not) and have it be a fun play spot for the kids. That was great and it worked just like we planned for the last few years. Howevs, last summer we noticed that no one was playing with their toys in this part of our yard anymore. It had gone back to being a neglected eye sore and we had very tentatively talk about it potentially becoming a patio some time down the road. With my spring fever in full gear, I couldn’t resist making some plans, (aka goals to work towards)(aka genius ideas that we should definitely do). I always find it so useful to make some sketches, whether it be in a computer program or on paper. The plans will always change, but filling in some solid ideas before even starting a project goes a long, long way. For instance, this plan doesn’t need to be executed all at once, instead it can be used as a map. When I sketched out the basement, I included my final version of the basement bath. When it came time to execute the plan, the budget couldn’t fit the entire bath remodel, but we had a solid plan, and it made it easy to know exactly where we were heading so that we could finish the project later. If we decide that this patio model is something we want for our […]

Guys. As it always seems to happen, it’s mid-December and the boys and I have come down with somer sort of nasty cold where all you can do all day is lay in bed, and no one is around to take out the garbage out for you or bring you Ludens. It was bound to happen, and if it had to happen, I’m glad that it’s happening this week and not over our Christmas break. I’m a little late on sharing the wintery exterior of my house this year. I braved the freezing temps and went outside to snap some pics so you guys would all know that I’m still here, and not stop reading my blog. My hair froze, so you’re welcome. Don’t worry, I’m back in bed now. Anywho, I think my delay in filling the boxes this year had a lot to do with the warm November (aka ‘Global Warming’, ever heard of it?), it just never felt right to deck out the boxes when it was still 50º outside. The kids and I didn’t get around to actually trimming out the window boxes until right before Thanksgiving – I like to usually have them in by mid-Novemenber. I am boring, and everything about the boxes is basically the same formula I always use. I am v much stuck in my ways. I like green and white and that’s all I need to make me happy. For these boxes I used a combination of spruce tips, cedar boughs, oregonia, cotton stems, pinecones, birch branches, and a few white faux berries that I’ve slowly acquired over the years. The one new addition this year was floral foam blocks. This is the same stuff you might find in fancy bouquets that you get from not the grocery store. In the past I would assemble the boxes before our first hard freeze and then as it got colder out the branches would freeze into place. This all made sense in theory, but as soon as a strong wind or a spring thaw came through, my window box filling would be all over the ground. Sad. I’m sure my neighbors would laugh when they would see me out in my slippers trying to put my window boxes back together. This year I spent $36 to buy floral foam to fill my boxes. A single case of this foam will last me […]

Hey guys! Did you know us Allens are the Kings and Queens of grilling and backyard parties, respectively? I’m sure you had no idea. Anyways, I know it’s kinda cliche for dudes to be super into grilling and babes to be super into entertaining and throwing parties, and at our house we usually kind of pride ourselves on going against the gender role flow. But Jeff and I fall right into those stereotypes of grill master extraordinaire and hostess with the most-est, and we are damn good at it. I gave Jeff a Weber grill for his first father’s day present seven years ago. He had always been curious about grilling and it seemed like a really good ‘dad’ gift, so I thought, what the hell? He took to it right away! Jeff would be the first to tell you that he’s not super proficient in the kitchen overall, but grilling looked good on him from the start. It was something I knew nothing about, so I couldn’t boss him about it (I do do that sometimes. I’m a jerk, I know). He could learn on his own, and at his own pace. Which he did, very quickly and awesomely. He is for sure one of the best, if not thee best, grill master out of all of our friends. He loves it, he’s proud of it, and it makes him happy. I on the other hand, love a good party. Always have, always will. Things have changed a lot from the day of keg stands and party cups, but the general idea is still the same — relax and enjoy being with each other. Nowadays with everyone being all old and kidded-up, the key is to create cool vibes for both demographic sets: the kiddos and the oldos. Parents can’t enjoy themselves if the kids are squabbling and bickering (as they do), so I always try to have a few small new activities set up for the little people. I know the adults don’t need much, especially if the kids are happy, but I try and make it a little extra special — a tub full of beer on ice, some party lights, conversation seating and easy but fun serving pieces. Zones are crucial to parties. You have to let your guests feel like they have multiple and distinctly different regions in which to hang. For us, it is […]

Guyses! Earlier this spring I made the biggest easiest improvement to increase our nighttime backyard chill vibes, and it was so incredibly simple. I’m unlocking the mysteries of landscape lighting for ya. I command (yep, command) you all to follow my lead and do the same with your outdoor spaces! So, I always thought you had to have tons of money and an electrician to enjoy a nicely lighted landscape. I mean that would make sense to me, for lots of reasons. Number one, we’re talking about electricity and the elements (like rain, and kids!), so I would assume cables would have to be buried 18″ below the ground, and stowed safely inside of conduit – but that is not true. Also, because you’re hooking up light fixtures to wires with flaming hot electricity running through them, I would assume that you would need a professional electrician to hook it all up properly – nopers! Also, I assumed it would all cost thousands of dollars, and it totally doesn’t. Seriously, alll you need is an GFCI outdoor outlet, a transformer, some low-voltage cable and landscape light fixtures. The key to making this easy enough for you and I to do this without electrocuting ourselves is the transformer. It plugs into an outdoor outlet and doesn’t need to be hardwired. The transformer knocks down a 120V standard current outlet, to a low 12V, which is safe enough for us typical non-electrician homeowners to use without worrying about getting zapped. And with the advent of LED lighting, the wattage necessary to run a backyard full of lights is incredibly and surprisingly low. For reference, I have 9 lights in my backyard running on a whopping 48 watts – that’s like the same as one incandescent bulb! I insist that you purchase LED lights for this reason alone. Because of the low wattage, the transformer can be really small, I am running everything on a 120W transformer, whereas just a few years ago, the same lighting layout might have needed a transformer that ran between 600 – 1,200 watts – and watts cost, bros. To figure out what size transformer you need, add up the total amount of wattage your fixtures will be using and then purchase a transformer that can support that amount. I would recommend leaving at least 25% extra in case you want to add extra lighting in the future. […]

This post has been such a long time in the making. It makes me so happy that I might fill this post with overly positive words and phrases. You guys!, six year, that’s how long it’s been since we moved into this house. Six years ago I was staring at an ugly white house decked out with lots of mint green trim, green stairs, green awnings, and no landscaping to speak of. I swallowed hard when I agreed with my Jeff that this was the best house for us. Was it my dream house? Let’s just say it had potential, I could envision a future for the interior, but the one thing I wanted more than anything was curb appeal (and gardens) and it was hard to see past the ugly. I wanted a cool Minneapolis house, not this old grandma hangout! Of course our plan was to tackle the major eye sores in the first few years – that’s how he we got each other to agree to buying the house. But then you quickly realize that everything costs tons of money, and you prioritize. I’ve wanted new front steps since the jump, I could see that it would do so much for the curb appeal of our home, but concrete is expensive. So, this is what happened instead. First summer we were broke, second summer we had a baby on the way and opted to try and repair and repaint the steps ourselves, third summer we painted the exterior, fourth summer we got a new roof cause part of ours blew off, fifth year we got a new fence, 6th year we got a new basement and here we are, the start of the seventh summer. New steps are happening! I know I talk about waiting out expensive decisions a lot. This for me, is just another example of how really stewing on something can work out. If we had these stairs replaced the first year we would’ve replaced them exactly with what was there, having 6 years to walk around the neighborhood and drool over other peoples front steps gave us (me) the time to really dream up the perfect stoop. Also, now we have a Grandmpa Rick (aka my best friend’s dad). Rick has been in the concrete business forever, and was super generous in helping us get these stairs realized. The plan was that I […]

Guys! Sorry for the lack of posts lately, but it just turned spring here, like yesterday, and I haven’t been able to do anything except stare at small green things that are growing in my yard. It makes for very boring blog talk. However, I have been up to a few little projects that you guys might be interested in, like creating a new irrigation system for ma raised bed gardens, installing landscape lighting in my backyard, and watching some very hard working dudes build me new front steps. Patience grasshoppers. It has taken me everything in my being to come inside and write this post, but you are my internet bros, and I won’t leave you hanging. So, today I’m talking about how I’m really bad at watering my veggie gardens. In the past, I have been known to either forget to water my gardens (’cause it’s just such a pain to hook up the hose and turn the tap on), OR I’ll turn the water on and forget to turn it off, for like, days. Sorry environment. My focus for this garden season is to get a handle on watering and general give a shitness. After I sow my seeds, I kind of just let it go, and forget to weed and water. I have decided to go back to good old straight rows, instead of the square foot method (which I had been using previously). For one, I am a crazy person and I much prefer the order of rows, secondly and most importantly is that I can water the garden much more effectively if I have it planted in rows, and thirdly I hope to become a better, more efficient weeder. In the past I would just throw a soaker hose in the garden snaking it back and forth and keeping my fingers crossed that it would water a decent amount of the plants. It didn’t. With this new watering setup, I will ensure that all my plants are getting watered at the roots, and the timer will ensure that I don’t leave the hose running for days and days. Win. There are three main parts to the system; a soaker hose, a traditional garden hose, and couplers. Basically, use a scissors to snip the hose to yer desired length, this makes it super customizable, bros! There also all sorts of accessories and parts that go […]

Hello Friends! You know it’s that time of year when you’ve got to starting thinking about all that boring, tedious, endless yard work you’ve got comin’ at cha. That’s how most people see it anyway, but I actually find a lot of satisfaction from getting my garden in tip-top shape. It helps knowing that that extra effort will give your garden and lawn the best shot at a great spring. Here’s a few of the things that are on my fall check list every year. Happy end-of-year gardening, to ya. Lower Mower Deck Give your lawn a good trim before you put it to bed for the winter. For the last mow or two set your mower blade low, cutting the grass between 1″ and 2″. Cutting the grass short prevents disease from setting in over the winter. It also allows that last little bit of sunlight to get to the roots. An additional benefit, leaves have less of an area to imbed themselves on. Consider renting an aerator or having someone aerate your lawn this fall. Aerating your lawn allows oxygen and water to get to the grasses roots and also prevents against thatch. Continue to rake the leaves as they fall. You don’t want the leaves to become matted on the lawn as they could create perfect environment for fungal disease. Divide & Cut Back Perennials In general, it is best to divide spring and summer blooming perennials in the fall, and fall bloomers in spring. By dividing the plant when it is not flowering, all the plant’s energy can go to root and leaf growth. There is always lots to consider and edit during this process. If I have a plant that did not do well in one location, now might be the time to move it to a new spot. Also, consider the size of the plant before dividing, I only divide a plant every few years or when it becomes to large for the space that it’s in. If you have an interesting plant that winters well, such as sedum of echinacea, feel free to leave it in your garden. This fall I left the stems on all the sedum and phlox. The sedum were left for visual interest and the phlox were left because I lost many of them last year, and I want to a visual marker of where they are located for […]

Whazzup all you cool people? I have a sweet makeover to share with you today facilitated by my nice neighborly pals over at Ace Hardware, (thanks Ace, you da best!). Us Ace bloggers were asked to get really in depth on a project this summer, something that we were really itching to get at. I knew right away that I had to tackle my garage. I have a few good reasons for this. Firstly, the exterior of it is so boring; white vinyl siding paired with a plain white aluminum door leaves much to be desired. I’m thankful that the garage is newer and not slanting to its side like so many of those hundred year old garages around here, but it needed a facelift for sure. Secondly, the interior (which I’ll get to in a future post), is filled to the brim with tons and tons of crap – you know, all that stuff that doesn’t go anywhere else – and needs to be sorted through and organized. Here in MPLS (aka Minneapolis) most of us residents access our garages via an alley way behind our homes. Now, this is nice for many of us, it prevents our small-ish (all is relative) yards from be eaten up by driveways, sadly though, there is a down side to alley lyfe. It is not popular in my neighborhood to keep a pretty garage or alley facade. Alley ways are strictly utilitarian and are strewn with garbage cans, recycling bins, yard waste and so on. It should be noted, that I carefully cropped a temporary port-a-potty out of these pics – point is, anything goes in the alley. I didn’t want my garage to fall by the wayside like so many others and wondered what would happen to the culture of our alley if I spent some time and gave it a quick but purposeful face lift. Could I inspire other folks in the neighborhood to pretty up their alley appeal™ too? I purchased a can of paint, some painters tape, a set of faux windows, and some decorative hardware, and guess what? The garage looks way better! Now, this isn’t my dream garage, and I know it looks a little fake-y, but when you’re putting lipstick on a pig, isn’t the lipstick better than just the ugly old pig? I think the answer is “heck yeah it is”. Of course I […]
