Hey guys! Did you know us Allens are the Kings and Queens of grilling and backyard parties, respectively? I’m sure you had no idea. Anyways, I know it’s kinda cliche for dudes to be super into grilling and babes to be super into entertaining and throwing parties, and at our house we usually kind of pride ourselves on going against the gender role flow. But Jeff and I fall right into those stereotypes of grill master extraordinaire and hostess with the most-est, and we are damn good at it. I gave Jeff a Weber grill for his first father’s day present seven years ago. He had always been curious about grilling and it seemed like a really good ‘dad’ gift, so I thought, what the hell? He took to it right away! Jeff would be the first to tell you that he’s not super proficient in the kitchen overall, but grilling looked good on him from the start. It was something I knew nothing about, so I couldn’t boss him about it (I do do that sometimes. I’m a jerk, I know). He could learn on his own, and at his own pace. Which he did, very quickly and awesomely. He is for sure one of the best, if not thee best, grill master out of all of our friends. He loves it, he’s proud of it, and it makes him happy. I on the other hand, love a good party. Always have, always will. Things have changed a lot from the day of keg stands and party cups, but the general idea is still the same — relax and enjoy being with each other. Nowadays with everyone being all old and kidded-up, the key is to create cool vibes for both demographic sets: the kiddos and the oldos. Parents can’t enjoy themselves if the kids are squabbling and bickering (as they do), so I always try to have a few small new activities set up for the little people. I know the adults don’t need much, especially if the kids are happy, but I try and make it a little extra special — a tub full of beer on ice, some party lights, conversation seating and easy but fun serving pieces. Zones are crucial to parties. You have to let your guests feel like they have multiple and distinctly different regions in which to hang. For us, it is […]

For Gus’ birthday this year I decided to try something other than your standard issue birthday cake. Being that Finn’s birthday is only 13 days before Gus’, I didn’t really want to spend my entire month of July making cake and ice cream (although I kind of did). A little back story for ya: My brother and I grew up with our birthdays only 3 days apart. There were a few rare occasions when my mom would try and combine our birthday’s together into one big celebraish. Although I totally understand why she did this I did not like it. Fast forward 29 years and here you have me with 2 kids who’s birthdays are back-to-back. Obviously, I never anticipated having kids with such close birthdays, but I knew that I had to do everything within my power to give them separate special experiences, especially because I always gave my mom such a hard time about it, and she always delivered on two separate birthdays. Even if it almost killed her. That being said, it was time to step up the cake game and give them both a unique cake-spierience, cause they are both unique and individual dudes. This year (just like all the others) Finn has made a request for his all time fav: chocolate cake with chocolate chips and chocolate frosting followed up with a side of homemade vanilla ice cream. Gus’ cake needed to be different, for his sake, as well as the sake of our returning birthday guests. I was going over all the different cake options in my head, and then dawned on me; I should make a layered ice cream cake! Yes, so smart Scoops! The best part is that I get to save my sanity (just a little bit) because this cake is made in small sections throughout the course of a week, so there was no last-minute-pre-b-day-par-tay stress. Plus it’s frozen, so I could have even made it days in advance, which I didn’t do, but you could. The cake is simple: 3 layers of brownie 1 layer of homemade pistachio ice cream 1 layer homemade vanilla ice cream 1 layer of frozen ganache. Guess what? I totally used brownie mix instead of making homemade brownies. This is why out of the box brownies rule: they take 5 minutes to prepare (minus baking time), I don’t even need to get the mixer […]

Over the winter, my old man and I did something pretty dumb. Let me start by saying we had really good intentions. We wanted to make a new annual Allen Christmas tradish and burn down our Christmas tree the day after New Year’s day, duh. It sounded like a cool and fun idea, and it made for a good excuse to drink some brews and have a winter fire in the backyard. I tried to think responsibly and logically about this; I knew the Christmas tree was dry, so I figured I’d cut it into quarters, and we could burn it in sections to minimize the blaze. That sounds reasonable to me. Unfortunately, even quartered dried-up pine trees like to burn fast and huge no matter what, like in a almost burn your house down sort of way. See below: We were lucky that we didn’t burn the house down. Jeff was super manly and grabbed the burning tree and threw it out into the middle of the yard before any major damage was done. We did however lose a few strings of our beloved party lights. They were melting the second that tree caught fire. The lights have sat lifeless and out of commission for the rest of the winter :( Have no fear, spring is here (or whatever the eff you wanna call it). I thought it would be a good time to get those party lights hung back up so we’d be ready for spring time back yard hang seshes. When I first hung the party lights I never thought that they would become a permanent fixture in the backyard. We were having some buddies over for a BBQ and I thought it would be fun to have some cool lights to illuminate our party. I had only hung them up with twine (thinking it was temporary), a few weeks later I had upgraded to string (big upgrade, I know) and there they sat until I burned them down. I was no dummy, though. Once we decided the lights were staying we knew that eventually we’d (I) have to figure out a away to give the lights more support and tension. The best solution that I could come up with was to hang a taught wire over the backyard and then clip the G40 clear bulbs onto the wire, thus relieving the string lights from supporting their […]

Cool, I am excited! It’s holiday time, and that means party time! In anticipation of all the impending imbibing I will be taking part in the coming weeks, I took it upon myself to put together a nice little bar cart (table). If you recognized that bar table as the side table from the living room you win! This poor table is currently homeless because we have a huge Christmas tree taking its place next to the couch. What does a girl do with a side table just roaming around her house?, well I will tell you what… She makes an awesome bar out of it, duh. I am a hoarder of glassware, just ask my dining room buffet. It’s brimming with the stuff. So, it was easy for me to go through and find my most favorite tumblers and champagne coupes to put on display. Guess what? I also hoard booze, and it was even easier to open up the liquor cabinet and find the prettiest bottles to put on my circular white tray. Booze and glassware just happen to be the two key ingredients to making a cocktail, and to making a bar, so yeah, this is all coming together pretty nicely. Other things you may consider getting for your bar include; cocktail shaker(s), an ice bucket, a citrus zester, some lemon and limes, a mortar and pestle, a large assortment of glassware, and don’t forget the mixers such as tonic water, soda water, sparkling water, coke, and lime juice. Finally, to add some holiday vibes and bring in some height I painted this stick white, put it in a vase, and threw some ornaments on it. Total tyteness achieved! A holiday bar cart that’s just waiting for a party, guys! Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Get your party vibes on with some cool party lights. In honor of hanging with our bros, Joel and Katrina last weekend we hung some party lights. We weren’t certain how long these lights would stay around but now that they are giving off such cool party vibes I think we’ll keep them for the summer. I grabbed some globe lights last time I was at Target for a cool $12.99 per 20 foot strand. A super cool improvement on our otherwise boring nighttime backyard zone. I highly recommend it if your backyard is lacking something. Happy weekend everyone! Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

I just wanted to take a sec and share with you a few inexpensive party decorations that are easy and quick to do, and totally will improve your party vibes. For Cam’s shower I needed to bring my pink game, so I was all about finding easy ways to have pink shades show up all around my garden. A super easy thing to do is go in your garage and grab an old clay pot or two, or three, or ten, and spray paint them white. Then with a $3.50 jar of neon pink paint, paint the bottom for instant color-blocking-coolness . Fill those suckers with flowers and you have an quick and easy centerpiece for less than the cost of a bouquet of flowers. You can’t have a party without some refreshments. And if you’re gonna have refreshments you probably need some party straws. There are all sorts of suppliers out there who sell paper straws. I always go straight to etsy for my cutesie party supply needs. I found these guys for $7.50 over at the seller Pretty Little Party. I already have a collection of washi tape, and if you don’t you should get some. It makes tons of everyday things way awesomer. I hang all my kids artwork and stuff with it, love it more than magnets. Anyway, I always buy mine from Pretty Tape, another Etsy seller. Once you have your tape and your straws, just wrap some tape around the straw, and cut out your “notched banner flag shape” with a scissors. Easy. Lastly, I couldn’t resist grabbing some crepe paper when I was at the party store. I didn’t know if I was gonna use it or not, but I figured I could spare the 99 cents a roll that it cost and figure it out later. After doing some quick research on the internet I decided I would give ruffled crepe paper a try. I grabbed my sewing machine and 15 minutes later I had about 30 feet of this wonderful stuff. If you follow the tutorial over at Dana Made It, you won’t have any troubles. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

We spent a wonderful day this weekend celebrating my good friend Cam (and by association Beak) and her soon to be baby girl. I am so honored to have been able to throw a shower for these two (plus one). They are some fine people and a few of my dearest friends. I am thrilled beyond words for them to soon be parents. Enough with the mushy stuff though: check out the party. There are not going to be many chances for me to throw a girl party, since it’s all boys around here 24/7. So, I went all out with the girl vibes. I am the stereotypical tomboy; pink has never been my thing. But for some crazy reason that I can’t explain I’ve been really digging it lately. Trust me, it’s weird. I let pink be my guide and it took me to all sorts of frilly and girly places. I went decoration crazy! I bought this super cool pennant banner on etsy, handmade from vintage sheets. Totally love it, AND, I am going to re-gift it to Cam. I think it would look awesome in her baby girl’s nursery. I quickly threw together the crepe paper ruffle streamers too. It was so easy! I’m gonna be posting more on that tomorrow. There were rice paper daisies hanging from overhead—a perfectly sweet backdrop for the girly garden vibes. Look! There is two different kinds of sangria! Our afternoon garden party ended at midnight thanks to this stuff. There’s that cake. SO EASY, make it for your next party! DO IT! Paper straws with washi tape flags. The Menu Tea Sandwiches: &#9660 Cucumber Dill with Cream Cheese &#9660 Salmon with Crème Fraiche Salads: &#9660 Orzo Salad with Arugula &#9660 Pink Fruit with watermelon, raspberries, strawberries and grapefruit Bites: &#9660 Profiteroles with tarragon chicken salad &#9660 Curried Deviled Eggs &#9660 Dill Deviled Eggs &#9660 Radishes with awesome butter and salt Drinks: &#9660 Lemonade infused with Basil & Mint &#9660 Red & White Sangria All of these wonderful things were prepared by a fantastic dude who was a huge help in getting all this together: Mr. Matt Scharenbroich. It pays to have chef friends. You should get some. On the left, the beautiful momma to be. Totally lovin’ her in stripes. On the right, Finn and his Auntie Katie. Share this...
Hey Guys! Thanks for sticking with me, I know I totally disappeared last week. That’s cause I was spending all my time baking and icing this cake in preparation for Cam’s baby shower we had on Saturday. If you follow me on pinterest you know I have a shower board going. One of the first things I pinned was a ombré cake from bubbleandsweet.blogspot.com. Making an cake with graduated colors was def on my radar, and then like magic, last Thursday, just as I was about to start icing my cake, Prudent Baby posted an even cooler tutorial for an ombre pedal cake, by guest blogger, The Hungry Housewife. It was total internet destiny. The Hungry Housewife laid it all out. There’s even a vid to accompany her detailed photos. I make a few of my own modifications though and thought I’d share then with you. First of all I used this recipe for Swiss Meringue Buttercream via Martha Stewart. This is the first time I had used this recipe and I totally loved it. I am one of those crazy people that is not really into frosting, it’s always too sweet (I have a major salt tooth). In my opinion, this recipe calls for the perfect amount of sugar and the consistency of the buttercream is exactly what I was looking for. I doubled the frosting recipe and I recommend you do too. It would totally blow to make all your icing, divide it, and color it, just to find out you were short in the end. If that happened to me I would cry, fer real. I started by crumb coating the cake. After I was finished I chilled the cake and split the remaining buttercream into 5 equal parts (about 1-1/2 cups per bag). For food coloring I used Wilton’s Rose color and graduated the amounts. The darkest color was made up of about six small dollops of the gel food coloring and the lightest was one (just a shade pinker than white). In the Prudent Baby tutorial I mentioned above they suggest using a #12 tip, which is all good and fine. I only had one #12 tip and 5 bags of icing, so before I filled the bags I just lined them all up and snipped ’em with the scissors. Totally worked just as well. The Hungry Housewife uses a spatula to spread her icing, […]

It’s that time of year again when I make about a million cakes. You would think this sort of thing happens in the winter months, but not for me. I’ve got 3 birthday’s and a shower on the horizon. Not counting the April birthday and bridge club party (totally my mom’s thing) I made these cakes for during the last few weeks. Speaking of that shower, anyone have any ideas for games? I’m looking for the old favorites with an updated twist. You know it won’t be a baby shower without weird shower games.
This weekend I cranked out some invitations for my friend Cam’s baby shower that I will be hosting in May. I’m super happy with how they turned out. I was totally inspired by Shanna Murray’s decal illustrations. I knew from the get go I wanted the party to involve a lot of handmade elements and I thought I’d start by penning the invitations in my own handwriting. Plus I had just ordered a bunch of washi tape for no other reason then to hoard polka-dots and stripes. It needed to be put to use. I pulled out my old gocco printer out and went to town. I’m getting pretty proficient with this printer, it used to terrify me. Mostly because the screens and bulbs were so expensive, but now I’m an old veteran. I’ve got mad gocco skillz. I tucked the invites in an inner 5×7 glassine sleeve. I love making correspondence and I wanted these to feel special and delicate. Can’t get enough of the polka dots these days. I whole heartedly blame Annie Larson and Crystal Quinn. I rounded the edges of the invite with a corner rounder. Do you have one of these? I highly recommend one, they make even the simplest correspondence seem special. I also printed on the front of the front of the envelope with hot pink banner and then hand addressed all of them in white ink. I think this might be my favorite part. The back of the envelope, printed with return address and sealed tight with black and white striped washi tape. Put a strip of washi tape on it. duh. Share this...
Last Friday we celebrated Jeff’s 30th & Golden Birthday. We had a golden spread featuring make your own philly cheese steak sandwich’s, spicy chicken chili, and golden cupcakes. It was the best. Below are some shots of the party spread. (dang a blurry photo, I should be able to do better than that. I NEED a new camera stat.) I tried making some golden cupcakes, I didn’t really know how to go about doing it but this is what I ended up with. White cupcakes with luster dust tinted frosting topped with a sprinkling of canary yellow sugar and golden candles. And of course the birthday boy. Share this...
Finn and I put together a little tutorial for you on how to make pinwheels. We used pinwheels as a centerpiece for Finn’s 3rd birthday last weekend, and it’s such a super easy and fast way to add a little fun to any party, we had to share our recipe. Here are you ingredients for success: Cool Paper Fancy Thumb Tacks Wood Dowel Scissors Hole Punch I’ve seen a lot of online tutorials that suggest using a pencil with an eraser as the stem for the pinwheel but I think the end result looks much better if you pick up some 12″ dowels from your local hardware store or Michael’s. We just press the thumb tack straight into the dowel and it works perfectly fine, no need to use an eraser. We bought our “cool paper” at Michael’s we picked it up in the scrap booking section for .59 cents a sheet, but you could get cool paper at any cool store. Step 1. Fold a piece of paper diagonally to create a square. Step 2. Cut squares out of your paper, we recommend cutting 6-8 inch squares otherwise your pinwheel might get a little huge.*It’s good to vary sizes for your pinwheels if you are making multiples, I prefer the look of different sizes as opposed to all the same. Step 3. Fold the paper diagonally the other way. That will give you an “X” crease on your square. Step 4. Cut approx 3/4 of the way up your diagonal folds towards the center of your square Step 5. Make 4 small holes in the corners of your square (1 hole in every corner). Make sure that you punch on the right side of your cuts as you can see in the above picture.* For our pinwheels we cut out 2 pieces of paper with different but complementary patterns and placed them back to back. This is optional, pinwheels look good with the pattern on both sides OR with a white or solid color inside, it’s really up to you. If you do choose to use two sheets of patterned paper we would recommend lining them up before you punch. Step 6. Fold the 4 corners of your pinwheel to the center of your pinwheel and line your punched holes up with your thumb tack. Push your thumb tack through the center of your square and press into the […]

We made it! We were able to celebrate Finn’s 3rd Birthday this weekend without having to worry about any new brother showing up. We pushed up Finn’s birthday party a week early to prevent any tiny party crashers and it worked out perfectly. Since my energy level is hovering around 0 these days we had a really low key party, which ended up being one of the nicest parties we’ve ever hosted. Instead of going totally nuts on party decor like I did last year, I just focused on a few essentials, one of them being Finn’s cake. Would you believe it if I told you that this is the first birthday Finn has actually eaten his cake. I guess he has an aversion to frosting, but chocolate icing is not frosting, it’s just chocolate, and adding “chocolate chips” can’t hurt either. The cake was a success and got 100% totally eaten. I also purchased a few simple rice paper daisies, paper straws for the lemonade and Gladiola’s from the farmer’s market. Three totally cheap and easy ways to liven up this par-tay. Snacks were served in lieu of hosting a BBQ with all the fixins’ like we have in the past. This was huge in keeping this party low key and simple. Finn and I made these pinwheels the night before his birthday, a simple and inexpensive DIY that we’ve done two birthday’s in a row. I will be including a how-to post in the next few days. Finn in all his bday glory. Us grown ups had fun too. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Elsa turned 1 on 7/16. It is truly amazing what can happen in a year! In a mere 365 days, my Girl Elsa has gone from a tiny little helpless bundle to a walking, babbling, curiously independent little girl. This blows my mind! We had a Birthday cookout for her, complete with brats, potato salad, fruit salad, baked beans and CAKE!!! We invited our Family and Friends and made a great afternoon of it. Elsa was a good helper during the preparations. Here we are making potato salad. I found this cake over at Wisk Kid WAY back when Elsa was just a brand new girl. I decided the second that I saw it that it was the perfect cake to commemorate the first year of my Girls life. This cake is delicious. You should make it. Here is the cake, all dolled up and ready for the party. My frosting didn’t come together as well as I would have liked it to, but it tasted pretty dang good! My homie, M. Stewart helped me make these tissue paper pom-poms. Big shout out to my other Lady, K. Johnson for her help putting these things together as well. Doing crafty crafts with your friends is always a “good thing”. I fashioned this Birthday Banner out of some fabric that I had left over from Elsa’s bird mobile. You can learn more about that little project here. To accompany our brats, I soaked some red cabbage in some apple cider vinegar and salt overnight. It is a perfect alternative to sour kraut and adds a beautiful pop of color to any table. Elsa loves raspberry jelly sandwiches. I thought it appropriate that they be part of our spread. They were a big hit! We had been practicing how to blow out birthday candles in the days leading up to the party. Unfortunately, we never practiced on a real cake with a real candle. Elsa wasn’t exactly sure what she needed to do at this stage in the game. I helped her out and we got though it unscathed! Here is an inside look at that 6 layer birthday cake. So that is it! One year down, many, many, many more to look forward to!Thank you to ALL of our Family and Friends for being so generous with your time and love during Elsa’s first year! We are a lucky, lucky bunch […]

My little dude turned 2 last week! It’s a crazy feeling being a mom of a 2 year old. You start to realize how much your life has changed for the better in such a short amount of time. In honor of Finn, we host a backyard bbq birthday partay! Here he is on his big day with his “2” shirt that we picked up from our Minneapolis neighbor over at FOX AND OWL. He managed to get mustard all over it within the first 3 minutes of his party. What can I say, we have one of those “always-messy” kids. The party planning all started a few weeks ago with an invitation. Finn’s been in love with a red wagon down at the neighborhood hardware store and I’ve known for a few months that it was destined to be his 2nd birthday present. I’m not such a huge fan of themes so I tried to be subtle about it. I gocco’d these FINNvites myself. You can see more about my process over here at my Yo!, Gocco Flickr set. Let me start with the best stuff first, the prettiest part of a party; cakes and desserts. I don’t know what it is about me and baking. I am a good baker, but any time I try to do something it always takes me twice as long as it would for anyone else. I always have screw-ups and end up sending my husband out for late night butter runs, and somehow in the end it always turns out okay. For Finn’s party we had velvet cupcakes with vanilla frosting, homemade vanilla ice cream, red wagon sugar cookie party favors, and an arsenal of hard candy. This is not my first frosting rodeo. I have made the vanilla frosting on the cupcakes before, and I was commanded that for this post I include the recipe as it was deemed “the best frosting ever.” So here you go, now you never have to worry about frosting again. This recipe was found in “More From Magnolia: Recipes From The World-Famous Bakery and Magnolia’s Home Kitchen” via epicurious.com Yield: Makes enough for one 3-layer 9-inch cake or 24 cupcakes Ingredients 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour2 cups milk2 cups (4 sticks) unsalted butter, softened2 cups sugar2 teaspoons vanilla extract Preparation In a medium-size saucepan, whisk the flour into the milk until smooth. Place over medium heat […]

What better way to celebrate mom’s birthday than a delicious brunch. I think we can all agree the breakfast is the best meal you could ever eat so I did it up big for mom’s bday. Here’s the stats:Homemade Coffee CakeCarmel Rolls from scratchEgg BakeFruitDelicious Bacon from Everett’sAnd Scoops Famous Potatoes Have you ever made coffee cake from scratch? This was my first, and I realize that there is no other way to have a coffee cake unless you bake it yourself. So GOOD! I followed this recipe on epicurious and ended up with the most delicious coffee cake ever. My son now thinks he should have “Cake” for breakfast every day of the week. These things looked pretty awesome but only turned out OKAY. Not enough carmel!!!, I mean what’s the point? Seriously? My mom is one of the lucky ones who get’s to enjoy peony’s at every birthday. My new yard came equiped with one large peony bush that only wanted to make one small flower. These beauties came straight from the grocery store… Insert sad face here. And as promised, a fancy knit dishcloth. I followed this pattern from this very thorough and indepth dish-cloth-pattern site. So there you have it… mom’s birthday in a nut shell. Share this...
It is well known rule of thumb that it never snows after my dad’s birthday. I think this year we can safely say that will happen, so onward spring. To celebrate the big day I decided to whip this delicious chocolate (since cakes are my specialty and all, plus I love birthdays.) Like all good recipes, I found it here over at my favorite recipe gettin’ place epicurious.com, I will forewarn you though that the frosting is pretty rich, but oh so deelisseoso, (that’s how we say delicious at our house.) Woah Man, check out these layers, it’s like entering the 5th dimension of Narnia (but not really like that). Like all good dads your birthday buffet should consist of chocolate cake, record presents, and gin & tonics. This is exactly what I would want if I was a dad. During the house packing, in a fit of unconscious tossing , I decided to part with all of the random scraps of wrapping paper I had around, thus when I want to wrap something now I must get creative. For this special present I use the city pages and I whip up a handmade bow. If any of you ever find yourselves in this situation check out howaboutorange.com for tips on making the perfect magazine cover bow. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Believe it or not, Friend Feast starts with planning in late October, it’s all a balancing act, who’s sitting where?, what friend is bringing what meal?, do we have too many potatoes? Answer: Never. Truth: I DID IT. Jeff was a hero with helping me transform the living room into our feasting lair, but with much rearrangement and a few beers we accomplished a very hard task. Multiple vantage points. I talked a lot about this Turkey in previous blog posts. If you are unfamiliar I have never roasted a bird before Thanksgiving 09′. My first Turkey was delicious so I try to do the impossible and recreate it on a much bigger scale for FF. Hell Yeah! Success. Matt and Friends put together the rest of the meal. Seen here, Matt’s amazing Friend Feast baked brie. He also makes, gravy, potatoes, way too many mushrooms, and of course, the main event, beef tenderloin grilled to perfection. My plate, filled to the brim. Party people! The party raged on and on like usual, with multiple liquor store trips and crazy horseradish vodka drink concoctions. This is what I awoke to int he AM. Onward, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Finn sits for a split second. I snap a photo in front of our tree. All of the presents wrapped up. I LOVE/HATE wrapping presents. I love making them beautiful, I hate wrapping for hours. Notice the handmade tags, looking good. Christmas Day snowstorm 09′. We introduce Finn to wet chunky snow and a sled, he is not impressed. Snow hurts sometimes. Flashforward: New Year’s Eve. The party friends are over again to toast to another new year. Finn wakes up for the countdown, drinks are drank. We end the night with only one fatality, Beak accidentally stabs himself in the eye. Scoops to the rescue to crochet up an impromptu eyepatch.
Flickr Find from howaboutorange Nicole and friends, don’t you love this? I do. Nicole, I think you should consider it for your little ladies first b-day partay. Everyone else, this would be great for a bridal or baby shower OR it would even be cool as permanent decor. If I ever get to have a girl baby lady, I might make these for her nursery. Martha Stewart breaks it down here. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter
