Hello people! I thought I’d be back with this post much earlier, so instead of chopping them up into multiple posts I’m going to give it you all at once. Be ready for three months of real life to fly by in the time it takes to read this blog post. Let me get you to up to speed. In April of 2022 we broke ground on an addition to our 1910 Minneapolis home. The addition was going to solve a few problems for us. It was going to give us the space at the back of our house to create a main floor mudroom, half bathroom and pantry/utility closet. The addition of these three rooms will allow us to remove the walls where the previous mudroom and pantry were, therefore making the kitchen twice as large. The old kitchen, mudroom and pantry kind of all inhabited the same space and together it all felt very clunky. On the exterior of the house the extension of the house gives an opportunity to create better flow to our our backyard, and works as a screen to create a private patio area near the back of our house. The addition itself is not large, it’s approximately 110′ square feet, but does so much for the flow of our house. For previous progress and plans you might want to check out these posts: Kitchen Plans, Kitchen Update #1, Kitchen Update #2. We’re starting this update with drywall, which makes all the difference. In a matter of days the place feels entirely different. It’s wild to see years of planning come together and finally be real! Dry wall rocks. The far wall is a funny one. We’ve got a lot going on here so let me walk you through it. Starting in the corner on the right. That nook is what used to be a backstair case that connected to the main set of stairs to the second floor. The stairs were removed long before our time. To the left of “the nook” is the chimney, and to the left of the chimney is the main plumbing stack behind drywall. This wall has a fuck ton going on, and we used cabinetry to give it a cohesive-ass look. Hang tight for that part. This is the larger opening to the dining room. We increased the opening from 30″ to 84″ to mimic the size […]

Hello! The kids are back in school, everything is awesome. Even though my kids operate themselves for the most part these days, they still interrupt my mental focus just enough to always feel like I’m never getting anything done. Look at me now, two days into school, I am at home, beds are made, messes cease being created, and I have time to share what’s been slowly happening on the kitchen and addition over the summer. The last time I was on the blog we had just started breaking ground on the new small addition on the back of the house. To catch you and or remind you, this addition will soon be our new mudroom, a half bath and a main floor utility closet. At the same time we are taking the space that use to be our kitchen, pantry and mudroom and replacing that with a larger way more efficient working kitchen! Let’s begin the tour shall we? It was an exciting day when the back wall of the house was torn down to reveal the new flow from kitchen to mudroom. Our carpenter Ben, spent nearly a week doing demo on the space before he could begin to put it back together. I have so much admiration for Ben, he has created this whole space nearly single handedly and it’s super impressive to see. I feel for him that he has to kill himself in the heat of the summer, but I hope that he feels like he has created something that will be loved for a long time. This is the interior framing getting close to completion. We removed a set of side of side-by-side windows in the kitchen and replaced them with new wood windows. The old windows were not the right size for the space, they were too tall and wouldn’t have worked. We opted for wood windows by Marvin and they will be stained to match the windows in our living and dining rooms. In this photo you can see the framing of the addition, and windows are beginning to be framed in the kitchen. Scroll to the next photo to see a 3-D rendering of this same view. This is the same view as the raw space above. While all of this building was happening I had some projects of my own to work on. I had rescued this sink from FB […]

Hey Guys! Hope you have all been doing well. I've been doing great over here. I've been eagerly awaiting the beginning of our kitchen remodel and half bath/mudroom addition. It's started in early May (apprx 6 weeks ago) and it's slow going, so I've been taking a lot of snap shots as the days roll on to share here, and make time flash forward in blog minutes. To remind you, this whole project is set to wrap up the last week of October 2022. We are adding on to the back of the house which will allow us to take make our current kitchen/pantry/mudroom into one large kitchen and the new addition will allow space for a mudroom, coat closet and half bath! Outside we'll be adding a new stoop, walkways and patios. We are stoked!

People of the internet, greetings and salutations from my little neck of cyberspace. I wanted to write a post and share some exciting news, after 12 years of wanting to renovate our dysfunctional kitchen we are finally able to make it happen and we are going big! We have decided to extend the back end of our house and add on a mudroom, closet and half bath. This will allow us to make our kitchen larger than it currently is because we’ll be able to absorb the old mudroom and pantry into the future kitchen space. We’ve been working with a design/build team since November 2020(!) and plan on breaking ground early summer 2022. When we bought our place in 2010 the kitchen was almost a deal breaker. We actually had passed on the house because of the kitchen and then our realtor asked us to come see it again and we agreed that the house should be ours, and someday we’d remodel the kitchen. I never thought someday would be so far away, but I’m glad it is because now we can really afford to do build a kitchen that we’ll love for a long, long time. Drink it in! I’ve been working on my own designs of the kitchen for years, I probably started in 2018 and it’s evolved a lot since. I’m really glad we have taken our time with this because we’ve really been able to soak up ideas and change things around. Our design/build team has been great too, they’ve taken my sketches and fine tuned them adding some great insight and ideas. Would you like to see some sketchup renderings, because I’d love to share them with ya. Just a little disclaimer, these renderings are not the official drawings, it’s just crazy old me needing to imagine how the kitchen will act and feel from all angles. Some of the cabinetry will be changing size and function, and paint colors are not set in stone, but generally you get the idea of how the space will work. The architectural drawings throughout the post are the correct dimensions for cabinetry, cabinet doors, and drawers. Our current entrance into the kitchen is a very narrow 30″. We will remove a few sections of the wood paneling and widen the opening. This is how it will look from the living room. The living room currently has the […]
