Wow! I would have never imagined that it would have taken me nearly a year to get the kids' bedroom project wrapped up to the point where I could post about it. My life has been consumed with helping my kids with their school work ever since March, and my priorities have had to shift a lot. I feel privileged to be have the availability to spend time helping my kids, but I have missed being able to work on projects. I've been slowly chipping away at their bedroom makeover project. I have had a paint brush at the ready trying to steal away 15 minutes here or there if the time allowed ever since we "moved back" to Minneapolis at the beginning of the school year...

Hey-O! I spent a little time at the cabin this week waiting for a special delivery and I was able to wrap up the pantry. We’ve been planning and working on the pantry here and there since the beginning of the new year. If you need a refresher on the plan, check out this post. We are playing musical chairs with our three entry closets at the cabin and we have transformed the closet closest to the kitchen into what we think is a highly functional pantry closet...

Hey! I’m back for part two of my office refresh. Redesigning my office space was part of my plan for a fresh start to the New Year. I wanted to start 2020 on the right foot, and for me a big part of that was getting my office space whipped into shape. I had given it an update a few years ago, but I’ve learned since then that the functionally the space wasn’t working for me, and it wasn’t inspiring. There was a lack of storage and things I used on a regular basis seemed to pile up. It was necessary that I create a system to keep my office clean, uncluttered and inspiring.

I am so excited to share this post! It's been a long time and a lot of long weekends in the making. I started our cabin bathroom remodel at the end of July last summer. Our cabin is a busy place, and we needed our small bathroom to stand up to all the traffic. More than anything it needed to be efficient and functional, but also look the best! Let's take a look back at where it started...

I wanted to start 2020 off on the right foot, and I was in need of an office refresh. A few years back I carved out my own little office in an unlikely space spot in our home. We have this really cool 4 season sunroom off of our bedroom, I’m pretty sure that when the house was built around the turn-of-the-20th century, the sunroom was intended to be a screened in sleeping porch for hot summer nights. In a more recent remodel (my guess is within the last twenty years) it was insulated and outfitted with new windows...

If you've been following for awhile you know that I have been wrestling with my stairwell design, but not just wrestling in the winning sort-of-away, but the kind where you're on the losing side and you're pinned down in a choke hold on the verge of blacking out. It was almost a TKO, but I came back with a dropkick pile driver combo and was declared the winner. ..

So stoked to share the cabin kitchen revamp (mostly on a budget) with ya, I mean it’s only been a year in the making. Talk about slow design! Of course, some of that slowness is by necessity, renovating a small cabin kitchen when you leave 120 miles away isn’t going to happen over night. When I get presented with a design problem like our kitchen cabin, my first instinct is to make the most trying to maximize design on a budget...

I went into the ORC thinking that it would be good motivation for a spring project but I had no idea how intense of a challenge it would be - this is serious work ma' friends!

In case you're new here, I spent the last 5 or so weeks in my guest bedroom, restoring old windows, stripping poorly painted doors, building a custom bed with an Ikea hack, building a very cool sculptural brass wall trellis, adding DIY lighting, and installing custom shelves...

Hey-O! How’s everybody doing out there? Things are pretty good here! The kids are getting really good at playing Minecraft and eating junk, I really couldn’t be prouder. Meanwhile, The husband and I are figuring out our groove now that he’s working from home. He’s been very busy, and it makes me feel like a big slacker – like I’d give up my afternoon nap just cuz he’s around. Anywho, we are succeeding at being people who are at home all day. I’ve been meaning to get this blog post out for weeks, and have been sitting on these photos for just as long. I was just waiting for the right moment to dive in and share this office/music space with you. If you’ve been reading for awhile, you’ll remember that we have a small “extra” room on our main floor tucked behind our dining room. I would imagine that it was probably some sort of room for the help back in the olden days. There is no closet, so it’s technically not a bedroom, and like I said it’s tiny, and located right near the dining room and kitchen. I’d lock up the maid in there. For the last six or so years, the room has been functioning as a dedicated space for our record and musical instrument collections, we flexed our brain muscles and have been calling it (wait for it)… “the music room“. Flash forward to early this fall when the husband landed a new job in which he has to work from home. Now the music room needs to also function as an office. In a way this is a not a bad thing, besides the record collection, (which Jeff and I both maintain), the rest of the stuff is all his music gear – so making this space a dedicated office for HIM and HIS stuff, isn’t the dumbest idea. Our house is decent sized, but it’s not ginormous with tons of room. We had two options were to set up his work space, in the middle bedroom on the second floor, or squeeze him into the music room in the quiet corner of our main floor. I still think that one of these days, one of our kids will want to live in that middle bedroom, so music room it is. Figuring out how to incorporate a rather larger vinyl collection, finding a space […]

This post was made in partnership with NewTechWood. They provided me with the decking for the patio, but all thoughts and opinions are my own. I wasn’t aware of it for a long time, but I recently discovered that our backyard was hiding something amazing from us. This awesomeness was disguised as a concrete slab next to our garage that was probably intended for overflow parking. We are a two car family that fits (very) snugly into our two car garage, so we’d always thought that maybe when our future-teens learn how to drive they’d park whatever hand-me-down beaters we give them in that extra spot. Ultimately, we decided they can park on the street and scrape their own icy windshields like generations of Minnesotan Teens before them. The spare parking started to seem like a waste of very valuable backyard square footage. A few years ago when we had the fence built, we decided that we would fence around this parking slab (in case you are confused it previously had not been fenced in). With the fence in place, the slab was starting to feel like it was becoming a part of our backyard. The kids would ride their tricycles on around in circles, and we’d fill up the pool on the concrete in the summer (which spared my lawn) but most of the time it just sat there. Most of the time it was just a sad and dirty place you walked through on the way to the alley to throw away garbage. After checking a lot of outdoor yard maintenance off the list in previous summers (i.e. fence, roof, paint, stoop, front door), it seemed like a good time to really give that slab some useful purpose! *Queue the airhorn I’m very excited to be able to share with you our new backyard patio! This new outdoor living room area rips, and it needed to exist! We may have maxed out the number of Hang Zones possible in this old house now! I’ve been hinting at the goings-ons of the backyard here and there in my insta-stories (ever heard of it?). I just finished up the final project last week, and am excited to get into all the nitty-gritty details on the stuff I built over the coming weeks. For now lets talk about the main ingredient. The floating decking tile! Did you know floating deck tiles […]

Sorry for disappearing the last two weeks. I had a very thorough and detailed plan to get the bathroom completed, and this post was supposed to be making its debut much much sooner. That was until our house was ravaged by some ungodly disease that made gross stuff happen to your body (aka Norovirus). Let’s just say, that new toilet bowl and I have gotten to know each other pretty well, and I’m thankful it was brand new and clean and not grossing me out as much as the old one would have been. Can I just say that I am so excited to share the final results of this bathroom renovation! Dudes, this is for sure is the biggest job I have taken on thus far, and it harbored the biggest amount of unknowns. A few years ago I would’ve only wished and dreamed that I could actually renovate a bathroom myself. But after building my skills along the way this project didn’t feel as intimidating as it did a few short years ago. Let’s start at the beginning. In June of 2015 the basement renovation began. We had contractors in our house for eight weeks during the summer and during that time they gutted the basement, installed new electrical, tore up the floor, installed new plumbing, and framed and dry-walled the space. That plan included a rough in for a basement bathroom, however the budget did not allow for completion of that project until a later date. Prior to the basement renovation there had been a bathroom in the basement, but it left a lot to be desired. The shower was inoperable due to a bad tile job on the floor and there were general creepy vibes and disgustingness. The new basement floor plan allowed for a larger area dedicated to a double sink, a much larger shower stall, and a small amount of tucked away storage for linens and such. Floor Plan I had basically designed the basement in early 2015, I knew what sink I wanted to install, where the lights would hang, the mirror would go, and the closet shelving would reside. I needed to have the contractors rough in plumbing to the exact places I needed it, electrical so that I could have pendants flank the mirror perfectly, and an accurate description of where framing needed to go for the shower and closet.
Hey-O! Hope you guys have all had a good start to your week. We are just recovering from our epic weekend in Las Vegas, where we wrapped up what might amount to one of the best three days period ever. We had the privilege to see The Killers at the Sam’s Town Casino and Gambling Hall, where they celebrated the ten year anniversary of their sophomore album Sam’s Town, by preforming Sam’s Town live front-to-back, talk about meta. We were some of the lucky ones who were able to witness both nights, and it was insane. Like next level, awesomely mind-blowing amazing, sing-along and dance-your-butt-off wonderfulness. I will be replaying it’s magnificence in my head for weeks and weeks to come. Sorry if I was too annoying about my fanboy-ness over on my instagram. Anyways, back to the stuff you check in on me for. I wanted to share more of the sunroom turned my new workspace. As I mentioned in Part I of this post, I have taken over the sunroom as my new office, and so far it has been working out as the ideal space. I shared the desk corner last week, and this week I’d like to share the storage area where I keep my excessive amounts of inspiration, design tools and camera gear organized. The fauxdenza was pre existing, if you’ve been reading for a long time, you’ll remember it was an essential piece of furniture needed to offset the slanted floor. The sunroom at one time was a sleeping porch, and like so many 100 year old porches, the floors were sloped to run-off rain water that the porch may have been susceptible to during big storms. It has since been closed in and made into a all season sunroom, but the pitched floor still remains. The floating Ikea cabinets (aka fauxdenza) make for a perfect home for magazines, and tools that I use on the daily. The far left cabinets are used to store away my tripod, camera, and camera accessories. I keep my ungodly amount of magazines organized by using vertical file storage that I snatched from Ikea, they are super cheap (4.99 a 2 pack) and tidy up my many piles of magazines. I need music while I work, it is a constant whether it’s this Crosley record player, spotify on the compu-tron, or on my Tivoli radio, there is always […]

Last week I shared some cool office stuff that I had been eyeing on the internet and elsewhere. I’m just putting the finishing touches on my sunroom turned creative work space, and I’m really excited about how it’s all coming together! As I said in the last post, I needed a place to work in my house, and since options were v limited it came down to commandeering the sunroom because it was the least disruptive to the flow of the house. Plus, the sunroom was practically move-in-ready, it made the perfect home office in waiting. The sunroom did have the benefit of being a chill, sunny and inspiring space to begin with. I just took it to a more productive level. I replaced the bookshelf under the window with a larger simple pine plank, giving me more space to spread out. I need constant reminders of the task on hand, so having the small but very functional magnetic blackboard hanging between the windows has been crucial. I’m a writer downer and a line-crosser-outter, so this has been very essentch tool for me. I also added a bit of cool pretty stuff, like that tape measure, which was brass until I threw a coat of copper spray on it, because copper is my thing right now. Ikea had a bunch of stuff I had never seen before including the tape dispenser, paper clips and these black gel pens that I love writing with. Ikea, thank you, you never disappoint me. I also made a quick little cord keeper to keep my tech gear organized. The copper clips didn’t open wide enough to clip onto the 3/4″ wood plank, so I just glued them up with some all purpose glue. Easy peasy. The chair I stole from the front porch, since we’ll be buttoning that up for the winter pretty soon, I didn’t feel too bad about taking it. I do long for the day where every room will just be happily furnished and I won’t have to always be stealing from them. Hopefully by next spring I can find a nice office chair (fingers crossed that it is the one I mentioned in this post) or something nearly as awesome. I’ll be sharing more very soon. There is a whole other corner of this little space where I hide away all my magazines, paint decks and camera gear. It’s cool […]

Guys, Who am I? Two posts in one day? FTW! Like I said, I’ve been brimming with ideas for the house. The first was to customize this round mirror from Ikea. Unlike so many other mirrors the Skogsvåg mirror from Ikea was the perfect size for my small space. At 18″ wide it fit this odd shape created by our staircase just perfectly. Plus the frame of the mirror is made from wood so it makes it easy to modify, unlike some of it’s metal framed counterparts. Also, did I mention the price, $39.99 – a deal as far as mirrors go. My go-to copper metallic spray paint is from Rustoleum, it does an amazing job of actually looking like copper, and I feel completely confident that when I use it, shit will look cool. I kinda went a little nuts and spray painted the buttons on my twemco flip clock too, oops. I’ve been pinning and pining for a round mirror for my house for a long time, I just couldn’t find one that was exactly what I was looking for, and for the price I wanted to pay. After searching around for a bit I found this pretty natural leather strapping, and bought a bunch of it (I have a few other ideas in mind for this as well). The leather is 1 1/2″ wide and sits perfectly flush against the sides of the mirror. And since the mirror is made of wood, it was easy to tack on using upholstery nails. More details on the mirror assembly below. I invested in a gaggle of pillows for our entry bench (aka radiator cover / built-in bench). You can see a peak of them in the above pic, and I’ll be sure to share more later. They have made the space!
Dudes! My front porch has been kind of magical lately. I should say, it’s always been magical, but now it’s really magical. If you’ve followed along, you know that I have always struggled when it comes to designing this space. The biggest challenge of course is the small size, it’s a front porch, so it’s tiny. It comes off about seven feet from the front of the house and is about 20 feet long, oh, and there is the entry to our house right in the middle of it. It’s been a difficult to find away to make the best use of the space. A few years back we added a round Docksta dining table to the smaller side of the space, which gave that area purpose. Before then, we just threw toys and other junk in large piles in that corner, now we actually eat a lot of meals out here during the summer, and we’ve been known to play a game or two. Just last night I sat around the table with my girlfriends (aka The She’Vaughns) as we planned for world domination. The table has been a good addition and I’m glad we divided the space into a dining/game zone and a sitting area. However, the sitting area has never been exactly right. We were struggling to put a lot of hand-me-down furniture into a very small space and what we needed to be doing was finding furniture to fit the space, not fitting furniture into the space. Seems obvious I guess, but as with most folks, there was always this whole budget thing we had to be mindful of, and ours was nonexistent. We had a lot of other projects to complete and budget for, before we could buy anything for a front porch. So we made them most of what we had, and I tied our rag tag group of furniture together with a bunch of accessories I like to call “Urban Cabin“. This all worked for a time too, and then it had it’s run. Finally we were ready to invest a little bit of dat cash money into the space. We’ve had the sofa for-ev-er. We purchased it new back in 2004 form Room and Board, as barely 24 year olds, it was the most expensive thing we had ever purchased. Three years ago we purchased new living room furniture and the sofa […]

This post has been such a long time in the making. It makes me so happy that I might fill this post with overly positive words and phrases. You guys!, six year, that’s how long it’s been since we moved into this house. Six years ago I was staring at an ugly white house decked out with lots of mint green trim, green stairs, green awnings, and no landscaping to speak of. I swallowed hard when I agreed with my Jeff that this was the best house for us. Was it my dream house? Let’s just say it had potential, I could envision a future for the interior, but the one thing I wanted more than anything was curb appeal (and gardens) and it was hard to see past the ugly. I wanted a cool Minneapolis house, not this old grandma hangout! Of course our plan was to tackle the major eye sores in the first few years – that’s how he we got each other to agree to buying the house. But then you quickly realize that everything costs tons of money, and you prioritize. I’ve wanted new front steps since the jump, I could see that it would do so much for the curb appeal of our home, but concrete is expensive. So, this is what happened instead. First summer we were broke, second summer we had a baby on the way and opted to try and repair and repaint the steps ourselves, third summer we painted the exterior, fourth summer we got a new roof cause part of ours blew off, fifth year we got a new fence, 6th year we got a new basement and here we are, the start of the seventh summer. New steps are happening! I know I talk about waiting out expensive decisions a lot. This for me, is just another example of how really stewing on something can work out. If we had these stairs replaced the first year we would’ve replaced them exactly with what was there, having 6 years to walk around the neighborhood and drool over other peoples front steps gave us (me) the time to really dream up the perfect stoop. Also, now we have a Grandmpa Rick (aka my best friend’s dad). Rick has been in the concrete business forever, and was super generous in helping us get these stairs realized. The plan was that I […]
