The spring is by far my favorite time of year. Us Minnesotan’s savor any and all outdoor time we can get in the warmer months. Every spring season I try to focus on a small space and give it a bit of TLC and this year I have teamed up with All Modern to update a warm and sunny spot in the corner of our deck. I’ve done a lot of updating to our yard and patio at our Minneapolis home, and now my attention is moving towards the cabin...

I have always envisioned our cabin furniture being updated in phases, to get us started, we purchased affordable "get-cha-through" furniture and repurposed hand-me-downs from our home. It has always been a work in progress and I had planned on updating some of our cabin furniture pieces with comfier, cozier and more substantial long-term items as we advanced in our cabin ownership. We just recently hit two years of enjoying our cabin, and we had gotten to know our cabin well enough that it was easy to point out what needed improvement, and what we were missing in terms of how we used the space and what we were expecting out of furniture...

Ooooh, I’m so excited to share with you guys so many outdoor spaces at the cabin this year! To bring you up to speed, we purchased our Northwoods Wisconsin (aka West Wisco) cabin nearly two years ago. We’ve done a lot of improvements to the interior spaces since moving in August of 2017, and the outdoor spaces were left by the wayside. That period of neglect is over, people! We have so much improving happening in our exterior hang spaces this summer, specifically expanding our lake dock, landscaping and gardening, exterior painting, staining the deck and making the most of our deck views. One of the best spaces of the entire cabin is on our deck overlooking our lake. We have the luxury of being very close to the water since our cab was built over 50 years ago, due to changing building codes it would be impossible to build this close to the water in 2019. Because of our proximity, we have views of our lake from nearly every window and the best is right off our deck.

I began looking for replacement slipcovers around the new year. I did lots of research, and after ordering some samples, I decided that Comfort Works as the brand that had what I needed. A huge reason I choose Comofort Works instead of other slip cover manufacturers is because of the durability of the fabric used. In doing my research I found this youtube vid, and I was so impressed by how the fabric repels liquids. As soon as I got my fabric samples I started dumping coffee and cocktails all over them to see how they held up. I was so incredibly stoked to see how well they did. I was actually using the samples as a party trick, impressing well imbibed cabin guests with “magic”, showing them how well the samples repelled stains...

This post is in partnership with Beddy’s Hey Guyses! Hope all is well in the new year! Things are starting off with a bang around here, and I’m ready to hit the ground running! I’ll fill you in on my next post, but I’m ready to get back at a more reg blogging schedule. More on that soon :) Last week, I ran up to the cabin for an overnight for the soul purpose of taking photos to share with yas. I almost always try to take photographs when I’m there. I have a laundry basket containing a tripod, a camera, all my lenses, a computer and I devoutly haul this thing back and forth EVERY.TIME.WE.GO. Once at the cab, time is usually too short and we are often so busy doing nothing (or everything depending on the weekend), that I’d hate to interrupt the chill/busy vibe to snap a pic. The aforementioned solo adventure to the cabin allowed me the time and freedom to take a lot of photos, and I’m stoked to start sharing ’em with you babes and bros. We’re nearing the six month mark now, so much has changed, and the list of future improvements is constantly growing. It felt like a good time to document where we’re at. Let’s start with a room you guys have rarely seen – the bunk room. In the last post I formally introduced the bunk room for the first time, outlining a game plan for the space – I like to think of it as the basics, ya know, the first layer. My goal is to make it as cute and functional as possible while not spending tons of money or time right now. Most importantly, we need to find the best furniture layout for the space, and then decorate it in a way that would fit the vibe of the cabin. The bedroom is not huge (roughly 12 x 10), but it is the largest bedroom in the cabin, so obvs we knew it had to be the room we used for the bunk room. Budget was a big concern going into this, since we were trying to furnish the whole cabin. A big money saver was choosing some of the least inexpensive bunk beds out there – god bless Ikea. We bought two of the Mydal bunks, my thought being to just get the beds in there, […]

Sorry for disappearing the last two weeks. I had a very thorough and detailed plan to get the bathroom completed, and this post was supposed to be making its debut much much sooner. That was until our house was ravaged by some ungodly disease that made gross stuff happen to your body (aka Norovirus). Let’s just say, that new toilet bowl and I have gotten to know each other pretty well, and I’m thankful it was brand new and clean and not grossing me out as much as the old one would have been. Can I just say that I am so excited to share the final results of this bathroom renovation! Dudes, this is for sure is the biggest job I have taken on thus far, and it harbored the biggest amount of unknowns. A few years ago I would’ve only wished and dreamed that I could actually renovate a bathroom myself. But after building my skills along the way this project didn’t feel as intimidating as it did a few short years ago. Let’s start at the beginning. In June of 2015 the basement renovation began. We had contractors in our house for eight weeks during the summer and during that time they gutted the basement, installed new electrical, tore up the floor, installed new plumbing, and framed and dry-walled the space. That plan included a rough in for a basement bathroom, however the budget did not allow for completion of that project until a later date. Prior to the basement renovation there had been a bathroom in the basement, but it left a lot to be desired. The shower was inoperable due to a bad tile job on the floor and there were general creepy vibes and disgustingness. The new basement floor plan allowed for a larger area dedicated to a double sink, a much larger shower stall, and a small amount of tucked away storage for linens and such. Floor Plan I had basically designed the basement in early 2015, I knew what sink I wanted to install, where the lights would hang, the mirror would go, and the closet shelving would reside. I needed to have the contractors rough in plumbing to the exact places I needed it, electrical so that I could have pendants flank the mirror perfectly, and an accurate description of where framing needed to go for the shower and closet. To […]

BROUGHT TO YOU IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BURKE DECOR We decided this year that we’d go all out on decorating our basement for the holidays instead of doing the main floor of the house as we normally do. I have to say I’m really excited about how the space all came together. I’ve put together a respectable collection of holiday decor over the years, and since a theme can change from year to year I have begun to get pretty neutral when purchasing seasonal decor. What do I mean by that? If it’s not white, metallic or natural greens, I tend to pass on making that purchase. By committing to a palette I’ll be investing in holiday decor that I can reuse and incorporate in our home during the winter months. It seems to depend on the year what metallic I am into, a few years ago it was silver, the year before it was gold, and last year was copper. This year I was able to get a set of matte metallic circle garland that incorporated all three colors (brass, nickel and copper), which allowed me to incorporate my collection of different colored metallics throughout our basement family room. Before decorating I gather up all of my collected holiday items from years past, and one or two new items for this year. I added the metallic garland (seen above) and some buffalo check stockings ($13 bucks!) to my holiday-decor-arsenal this year. I wanted a simple understated vibe for the basement. I especially love the green from the freeze dried boxwood that purchased a few years back, which I draped it on top of the built-in cabinets in our “dining-nook”, and nestled in some gold tipped christmas trees. After spying that very cool cinema light box on CLJ‘s site, I snagged up my own this summer. We’ve changed out the message quite a few times – I try to keep my quips on the funny side (not-so-much-inspirational). “Merry Christ-mas” was Gus’ choice, and I suppose it seemed like a fitting sentiment. The new garland from Burke Decor is draped across the built-ins, transitioning from our little dining/game area into the larger living space. I think it will also make the perfect backdrop at our annual holiday party and new years day celebraishes. Behind the sofa, I hung some white garland, two trees (one in white and one in silver) a set […]

This post is in partnership with Anolon for A Night In. Good evening Friends! If you frequent the cool interior blogs of the internet, you might remember this summer when a bunch of bloggers got together to post about their homes in the evenings (gasp, say what?). I know we are all used to seeing our favorite bloggers share light-filled, airy pics of their homes during the day, but definitely not during the night. Can you even imagine an interior decor pic without overcast sun light pouring through the windows? But pals, nights are the times when our homes feel the coziest, don’t ya think?! I love going around the house and switching on combinations of lights finding the right lighting vibe. That’s why I am so excited to share what our kitchen looks like in the evenings. Kim of Yellow Brick Home and Julia of Chris loves Julia came up with this crazy concept and now have gone on to host round two of A Night In (sponsored by Anolon)! I loved the idea from the minute I heard about it, and am thrilled to be part of this squad for the fall installment. Evenings are sacred around here. We try and spend as much time as we can with the kids after Jeff gets home and before they head off to bed. It’s our only real family time during the week nights, and we soak up of every minute of the four of us together. I also cherish the time after those crazy-young-things-that-we-call-our-kids are in bed, and Jeff and I can finally sit back, chill out, make a cocktail and catch up on each other’s days. Recently we’ve been making seasonal cocktails in the evenings, and I wanted to share one of the recent concoctions that we have been hooked on. Since some readers might be popping in from other blogs I wanted to take a chance to say “Hey” and introduce myself. My name is Alison, and I get a kick out of fixing up my old house! I didn’t have much handy experience when I became a home owner 6 years ago, but after a lot of trial and error I’ve figured out how to do quite a bit of my home’s renovations and repairs myself. I am currently working on renovating the basement bathroom, and am using a lot of the skills I picked up […]

Hey guys! Did you know us Allens are the Kings and Queens of grilling and backyard parties, respectively? I’m sure you had no idea. Anyways, I know it’s kinda cliche for dudes to be super into grilling and babes to be super into entertaining and throwing parties, and at our house we usually kind of pride ourselves on going against the gender role flow. But Jeff and I fall right into those stereotypes of grill master extraordinaire and hostess with the most-est, and we are damn good at it. I gave Jeff a Weber grill for his first father’s day present seven years ago. He had always been curious about grilling and it seemed like a really good ‘dad’ gift, so I thought, what the hell? He took to it right away! Jeff would be the first to tell you that he’s not super proficient in the kitchen overall, but grilling looked good on him from the start. It was something I knew nothing about, so I couldn’t boss him about it (I do do that sometimes. I’m a jerk, I know). He could learn on his own, and at his own pace. Which he did, very quickly and awesomely. He is for sure one of the best, if not thee best, grill master out of all of our friends. He loves it, he’s proud of it, and it makes him happy. I on the other hand, love a good party. Always have, always will. Things have changed a lot from the day of keg stands and party cups, but the general idea is still the same — relax and enjoy being with each other. Nowadays with everyone being all old and kidded-up, the key is to create cool vibes for both demographic sets: the kiddos and the oldos. Parents can’t enjoy themselves if the kids are squabbling and bickering (as they do), so I always try to have a few small new activities set up for the little people. I know the adults don’t need much, especially if the kids are happy, but I try and make it a little extra special — a tub full of beer on ice, some party lights, conversation seating and easy but fun serving pieces. Zones are crucial to parties. You have to let your guests feel like they have multiple and distinctly different regions in which to hang. For us, it is […]

I took sometime to think about what I needed and came up with this basic plan (above) before I went out shopping. Alright, so my spreadsheet-obsessed-husband is rubbing off on me, I’ve been wanting to put a ‘zone 4’ plant database together, including all of the crucial info such as their height, width, color, water needs, sun needs, etc. Guess what you guys? Monrovia already did that! I actually spent quite a bit of time looking through plant catalog using their database, you can find it over here (follow the link and click on ‘plant catalog’). You can also shop Monrovia online and have them shipped to your local nursery if you have your heart set on something specific. Monroiva has got everything, you guys, so even if you’re not planting a huge foundation garden like me, they still have amazing products. Monrovia won’t let their plants ship to nurseries until they meet rigorous quality and size standards. My mom and I got to the nursery just as they received a new Monrovia shipment, it took mom and I all of the will power not to buy the whole truck. Monrovia is sold at most big box stores and a lot of local ma and pop nurseries, click here to find a nursery or garden center near you.

Budz, although I try, my house isn’t 100% pretty. It’s easy to lie to the world and make it seem that way on the internet though. A few of you have noticed that I never post photos of my bathroom, and that’s for good reason – there’s only shame to share. We have two bathrooms in our house, one in the basement, that for the time being consists of a toilet and a roll of toilet paper. The other is on the second floor of our house, and is used by the entire family as well as guests. Herein lies the problem. We are hosting four holiday events throughout the next five weeks, that means lots and lots of people are going to be making visits to our super-sad bathroom. They are going to see the dirty caulk that is never 100% free of boy pee, white grout that should’ve never been used in a main bathroom, dated chrome fixtures, and shiny faux-marble tile. Talk about having to put lipstick on a pig. Thankfully, with a little nudge from the folks at Ace Hardware, I was able to finally tackle this project that had long been at the bottom of the to-do list. Ace had asked us Ace bloggers to give their color matching technology a try on our next project – I knew as soon as I heard about it, that this was a project solely meant for the upstairs bathroom. For reference here is the before and after. I had done a quick little makeover about a year-and-a-half after we moved in. It basically involved a coat of paint, a new shower curtain and some towels. It was okay. Now, after a few years living with it, that green color began to totally wear on me, and white just wasn’t a good color for a vanity that saw lots of dirty hands and little kid traffic. My inspiration for the vanity color came from a sentimental 7″ record. The Plastic Constellations was Jeff’s band that formed in high school – they went on to be a band for 10 more years, write four more records, go on countless tours, get an 8.5 review on pitchfork, and make tons of friends. Jeff and I spent much of our early 20’s driving around the country in a touring van – it was the best. Needless to say, TPC Blue was […]

Hello, Budz! I’m excited about this post, like more excited than I knew I would be. I got the chance to work with an amazing line of products, something that was a real game changer for me. Do you know about Amy Howard? I have to admit that I didn’t going into this, but have discovered a bit about her and a lot about her line of products, Amy Howard at Home. “I know”, I’m getting tired of myself starting these posts with “I didn’t know about this thing, but now I do, and it’s pretty cool”, but what am I supposed to do when that’s really true, and that really happened. Maybe I need to become a better story teller, or something. How do you feel about antiquing furniture and faux finishes? If you’re like me you’d say “meh”. However, once I got the Amy Howard at Home paints and waxes in my hands it was a different story. I was excited to use the chalk based One Step paint, and I was even more amped up after the first few strokes. This stuff went on like no paint I had ever used before. Can I say that it almost felt fool proof? It was nice and thick and smooth, it was easy to apply with a flat China Bristle brush (I was definitely doubting how well this would work) and within seconds I began to realize so many things that could be possible with this paint. I’m a real sucker for spray painted finishes when I want that flat matte look, but this One Step paint achieved that rich matte feel way better than my favorite can of spray paint could have. From now on I will have a can of black and white One Step on hand at all times. Discovering this paint was just the tip of the iceberg. I started by doing a little experimenting by using swatches of the flat black as the base. I then began to add different waxes and even the ‘Dust of Ages‘ powder to see what other sort of finishes I could achieve. Two things happened during this process, I realized that antique-ish finish and textures that actually pass for old might change the way I felt about “faux” finished furniture. Secondly, I was amazed by how easy, creative and relaxing the whole process was. Like, I haven’t been […]

Whazzup! I’ve got some cool news that I’m excited to share with you today. My good pals over at Ace asked us Ace Bloggers to makeover a room using LED light bulbs, and I was all like “whut?, but I like my old fashioned incandescent bulbs – please, no”. I always liked the warm light that a standard incandescent bulb gave off and I was pessimistic that any sort of new fangled lighting would make a room look anything but blue and clinical. Alright, Ace. Challenge accepted. I immediately thought of our living room. I love the deep moody dark blue walls during the daytime, and especially during overcast winter days, but at night when it’s lit by incandescent bulbs it looks much different. The warm light from the bulbs makes the wall color look like the inside of an overly-saturated teal gemstone, and unfortunately it doesn’t resemble the dark cool blue that I know and love. Not only that, but the woodwork turns from a rich warm brown with lots of texture and patina, to a flat trim that takes on a red-ish hue, I mean eew, I mean, hue. But whatever, I was stuck on those incandescent bulbs. So, because I always like an excuse to visit the hardware store I happily obliged and headed up there to get schooled by my Ace buddies on the ways of the futuristic LED’s. Here’s a few things ‘dat I learned: ⊙ LED lighting has the greatest potential impact on energy savings in the United States. It is estimated by the year 2027, use of LEDs could save about 348 TWh (compared to no LED use) of electricity: This is the equivalent annual electrical output of 44 large electric power plants, and a total savings of more than $30 billion at today’s electricity prices! ⊙ LEDs can direct light where it is needed. Incandescent and fluorescent bulbs emit light – and heat – in all directions. ⊙ Save over $60 per year on your electric bills when you replace just the 6 most used bulbs in your home with LED options. ⊙ LED bulbs are cool to the touch and use 80% less energy than incandescent bulbs – especially good if you’ve got little ones who can’t help but touch hot things. ⊙ Transitioning to LED lighting not only saves you money in energy bills, but also saves you trips to […]

Whazzup all you cool people? I have a sweet makeover to share with you today facilitated by my nice neighborly pals over at Ace Hardware, (thanks Ace, you da best!). Us Ace bloggers were asked to get really in depth on a project this summer, something that we were really itching to get at. I knew right away that I had to tackle my garage. I have a few good reasons for this. Firstly, the exterior of it is so boring; white vinyl siding paired with a plain white aluminum door leaves much to be desired. I’m thankful that the garage is newer and not slanting to its side like so many of those hundred year old garages around here, but it needed a facelift for sure. Secondly, the interior (which I’ll get to in a future post), is filled to the brim with tons and tons of crap – you know, all that stuff that doesn’t go anywhere else – and needs to be sorted through and organized. Here in MPLS (aka Minneapolis) most of us residents access our garages via an alley way behind our homes. Now, this is nice for many of us, it prevents our small-ish (all is relative) yards from be eaten up by driveways, sadly though, there is a down side to alley lyfe. It is not popular in my neighborhood to keep a pretty garage or alley facade. Alley ways are strictly utilitarian and are strewn with garbage cans, recycling bins, yard waste and so on. It should be noted, that I carefully cropped a temporary port-a-potty out of these pics – point is, anything goes in the alley. I didn’t want my garage to fall by the wayside like so many others and wondered what would happen to the culture of our alley if I spent some time and gave it a quick but purposeful face lift. Could I inspire other folks in the neighborhood to pretty up their alley appeal™ too? I purchased a can of paint, some painters tape, a set of faux windows, and some decorative hardware, and guess what? The garage looks way better! Now, this isn’t my dream garage, and I know it looks a little fake-y, but when you’re putting lipstick on a pig, isn’t the lipstick better than just the ugly old pig? I think the answer is “heck yeah it is”. Of course I […]

Hello Peoples! How are you guys doing? It’s Monday, and I have a really cool project to share with you plus another awesome giveaway – you can thank my pals at Ace for that! It’s finally starting to be porch season, the weather is coming around a bit, and things are starting to feel ah-very nice (ala Borat). We’ve been hanging in our porch whenever we’re not doing the million other things that we’re always doing. I always get antsy for a project after getting back into porch life. I just can’t sit in there and relax, I look around the space trying to figure out ways to tweak it and make it better. This spring I’d been looking for a few ways to add another layer of awesomeness to it, and this months project from Ace was the perfect excuse to go for it. I got inspired by a new color palette which is a mash up of OPI nail colors in latex paint format. How did this happen you ask? Well, Clark+Kensington have been teaming up with OPI at the paint studio for the past few years bringing some of OPI‘s most iconic nail colors to DIY projects everywhere. I picked the Creative Genius palette for obvious reasons. Honestly though, I was smitten by how it was heavy on the green side. Although I love the blue, green is my fav color. Plus the color “Bubble Bath” might be my new favorite shade of pink. I was happy to focus a project around this perfectly porch-suited (and summery) color palette. I knew that the porch was lacking in lushness and I figured what better way to get some green up in this light filled space then some modern beaded macrame-ish hanging planters. I did something very similar in my kitchen last year and I figured I could apply the same ideas, but with more color (and beads) for the porch. We don’t have tons of surface space for planters in our porch – utilizing vertical space with hanging planters is the way to go, plus it helps to create a bit of privacy from our neighbors porch. So how does one make a planter you ask? Don’t worry budz, I will tell you so you will know the secrets too. I could sense that you were a little worried about that, so let me just put your mind […]

Hey doodz, remember last year when we got our new fence installed? (Part 1, Part 2) Well today I wanted to share with you how it be lookin’ one year later. I’ve stained it since the last time we talked about it. I decided to go for a dark brown stain (semi-transparent chocolate by behr), and I really like it although staining was a total bear of a job. It took me 5 gallons of stain, many, many, M A N Y hours, and tons of slivers. It was worth it, although if I ever had to do it again I would seriously consider hiring it out. What can I tell you about staining; it’s a pain, it’s hard, and slats are dumb. I used a brush because I wanted the color to look variegated and dimensional, so some of the slats had 3 heavy coats of stain and others had 2 lighter coats – it all took a lot of time and effort but I’m really happy with how it all turned out. Just to give you some idea, I began this staining project last fall and finished it at the end of April. It was a big project and took an enormous amount of time – I better like it. To refresh your memory, we previously had a dated chain link fence with green plastic slats – not a pretty backdrop for the garden vibes we were going after. Last spring we had installed a horizontal cedar slatted fence. We had added a 4′ fence on one side of our yard, and a 6′ privacy fence on the other (can you tell which neighbor I don’t like?). We added gates to both sides of the house, and a big gate in the back opening up to a concrete slab on the side of our garage. Now that the fence is installed and stained we seriously love everything about the fence! I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. Bros, I’m not gonna tip-toe around it, this is a sponsored post, and I’m proudly endorsing Fencein Deck, the company who built our fence. If you’re in the twin cities area and are looking to have a fence built, (custom or otherwise) please consider giving Dave a call (651-246-3176) or shoot him an e-mail, he is a good dude who has built a solid business (Fencein Deck) for himself here in […]

Hello all you wonderful people! In case you haven’t noticed it, it’s totally spring now! That means there is lots of work to do to get your yard in tip-top shape. Are you feeling hungry to get out in the yard on these warm spring days? Take advantage of that ambition and use it your benefit before the dog days set in and drinking in your backyard outweighs any desire to mow, mulch or edge your yard. The key to having a green, manicured and tyte lawn is to prep your yard in the spring and fall and spend a bit of time here and there throughout the summer maintaining it. It only takes part of a weekend to do spring lawn and garden bed maintenance, but is crucial if you want your neighbz to be jealous all summer long. It’s no big secret, but here are a few easy things you can do right now to get your lawn and gardens looking like a hot-babe-of-a-yard! Remove Thatch THATCH (THaCH) noun Lawn thatch is the layer of dead turfgrass tissue between the green vegetation and the soil surface that must be removed (a process known as “dethatching”) to maintain lawn health. It consists of stems, leaves, stolons, rhizomes and roots. You guys ever notice that dead grass hanging out under your green grass in your yard? That stuff is called “thatch” and it can be exactly why your lawn isn’t looking super sweet. Thatch suppresses the grass from growing and can even kill it. Lucky for you it’s easy to get rid of. Just grab a garden rake and give your thatch-y areas a good deep raking, making a solid effort to remove as much thatch as possible. If your yard suffers from thatch it might take a good amount of work to get rid of it all, but I promise that every season from now on it will get easier to maintain. Lawn Soil Seed Now that you’ve raked your yard, you might notice that you have some bare spots. This is where re-seeding your lawn comes in. You could just go ahead and throw some seed on the ground, but I wouldn’t recommend it. You will have much better results if you use top soil, compost or a mixed starter soil with fertilizer. Spread the soil into the bare spot and then top off with some grass seed. […]
