I wanted to start 2020 off on the right foot, and I was in need of an office refresh. A few years back I carved out my own little office in an unlikely space spot in our home. We have this really cool 4 season sunroom off of our bedroom, I’m pretty sure that when the house was built around the turn-of-the-20th century, the sunroom was intended to be a screened in sleeping porch for hot summer nights. In a more recent remodel (my guess is within the last twenty years) it was insulated and outfitted with new windows...

Hey-O! Hope you guys have all had a good start to your week. We are just recovering from our epic weekend in Las Vegas, where we wrapped up what might amount to one of the best three days period ever. We had the privilege to see The Killers at the Sam’s Town Casino and Gambling Hall, where they celebrated the ten year anniversary of their sophomore album Sam’s Town, by preforming Sam’s Town live front-to-back, talk about meta. We were some of the lucky ones who were able to witness both nights, and it was insane. Like next level, awesomely mind-blowing amazing, sing-along and dance-your-butt-off wonderfulness. I will be replaying it’s magnificence in my head for weeks and weeks to come. Sorry if I was too annoying about my fanboy-ness over on my instagram. Anyways, back to the stuff you check in on me for. I wanted to share more of the sunroom turned my new workspace. As I mentioned in Part I of this post, I have taken over the sunroom as my new office, and so far it has been working out as the ideal space. I shared the desk corner last week, and this week I’d like to share the storage area where I keep my excessive amounts of inspiration, design tools and camera gear organized. The fauxdenza was pre existing, if you’ve been reading for a long time, you’ll remember it was an essential piece of furniture needed to offset the slanted floor. The sunroom at one time was a sleeping porch, and like so many 100 year old porches, the floors were sloped to run-off rain water that the porch may have been susceptible to during big storms. It has since been closed in and made into a all season sunroom, but the pitched floor still remains. The floating Ikea cabinets (aka fauxdenza) make for a perfect home for magazines, and tools that I use on the daily. The far left cabinets are used to store away my tripod, camera, and camera accessories. I keep my ungodly amount of magazines organized by using vertical file storage that I snatched from Ikea, they are super cheap (4.99 a 2 pack) and tidy up my many piles of magazines. I need music while I work, it is a constant whether it’s this Crosley record player, spotify on the compu-tron, or on my Tivoli radio, there is always […]

Last week I shared some cool office stuff that I had been eyeing on the internet and elsewhere. I’m just putting the finishing touches on my sunroom turned creative work space, and I’m really excited about how it’s all coming together! As I said in the last post, I needed a place to work in my house, and since options were v limited it came down to commandeering the sunroom because it was the least disruptive to the flow of the house. Plus, the sunroom was practically move-in-ready, it made the perfect home office in waiting. The sunroom did have the benefit of being a chill, sunny and inspiring space to begin with. I just took it to a more productive level. I replaced the bookshelf under the window with a larger simple pine plank, giving me more space to spread out. I need constant reminders of the task on hand, so having the small but very functional magnetic blackboard hanging between the windows has been crucial. I’m a writer downer and a line-crosser-outter, so this has been very essentch tool for me. I also added a bit of cool pretty stuff, like that tape measure, which was brass until I threw a coat of copper spray on it, because copper is my thing right now. Ikea had a bunch of stuff I had never seen before including the tape dispenser, paper clips and these black gel pens that I love writing with. Ikea, thank you, you never disappoint me. I also made a quick little cord keeper to keep my tech gear organized. The copper clips didn’t open wide enough to clip onto the 3/4″ wood plank, so I just glued them up with some all purpose glue. Easy peasy. The chair I stole from the front porch, since we’ll be buttoning that up for the winter pretty soon, I didn’t feel too bad about taking it. I do long for the day where every room will just be happily furnished and I won’t have to always be stealing from them. Hopefully by next spring I can find a nice office chair (fingers crossed that it is the one I mentioned in this post) or something nearly as awesome. I’ll be sharing more very soon. There is a whole other corner of this little space where I hide away all my magazines, paint decks and camera gear. It’s cool […]

Ha, if you thought this post was about Minneapolis’ very own 90’s-indie-rock band, The Hidden Chord, I really got you fooled. Props to those who got the very obscure reference, to the majority of you who have no idea what I am talking about, I sincerely apologize. This post is actually about hiding unsightly cords and cables. Okay, okay, so I’m not reinventing the wheel or anything, you guys probably know all about products that make it easy to disguise your cords. Cable upkeep is often overlooked and just happened to be one of the last things on my sunroom-makeover to-do list. Since it’s cold, grey and still not springy out, I took I’d take it upon myself to finish this one last task while at the same time reminding you all to put cord tidying on your spring to-do list. I’m sure you never noticed these cords in my sunroom photos I shared two weeks ago, that’s because my photographs are just lies. LIES! I hide all that ugly stuff in secret hiding spots or sometimes, gasp, I even photoshop them out. If you guys even knew the truth. For instance in my living room, there is a piece of artwork that is not centered on the wall – instead of taking out a hammer and nail and centering the frame like a normal person would, I photoshop it into place every single time I share photos of my living room with you. I am such a liar, you guys! Sometimes living the lie just seems easier and more convenient then facing facts, manning up and tidying up my space. I promise, I’ll hide the cords and yes, I’ll even get out my hammer and a nail and adjust the artwork on the living room wall. Sheesh. Okay, so if you’ve never used these cable channels before they are really easy to install. They come in different sizes and shapes. Above I am using a quarter round and a half round style from D-Line. The quarter round gives you the option of trimming out baseboard moldings as a way to super-sneaklily-disguise your cords and cables. Almost all of the products on the market these days are paintable too, so it makes it really easy to hide away your technological mess. I picked up these white channels at my local hardware store. The installation is very basic. All you have […]

Guys! I did it! I finally pulled the sunroom together, and I think it looks pretty awesome! After living in our house for four years it finally feels like we are starting to put our stamp on the spaces in our home. The sunroom was the latest such adventure. Decorating a home is a very slow process, though super rewarding and satisfying. Much of the first four years have been spent putting things together and giving the home a vibe that read ‘us’. We’ve spent a little money, but overall have been pretty frugal when it comes to decorating. The bulk of our money has been spent on projects that had a big pay off, like painting the house. Now it feels like we are entering the next stage of living in a home (the second layer, if you will) where we can start to dig into the details of each space to make sure it truly represents us aesthetically, consistently and cohesively. We’ve been able to really get used to our spaces over the years. We know how they currently function and how we would like them to actually function. Some spaces still need improving and tweaking. Our bedroom for example, still consists of college furniture and a mattress on a bed frame – it looks ‘pretty’ but still needs a lot of work. We are now ready to dive in a little deeper and begin to make rooms functional and decorate them with purpose. I’m excited to be able to start focusing our decor dollars, and I think the sunroom makeover are the beginnings steps of addressing that second layer – four years deep. Our porch wasn’t bad before, it really wasn’t. I thought it was cute and cozy, but it still didn’t function very well and because of that we barely used it. It’s a really good example of that first layer of decorating — pulling random furniture together with a few repeating design elements to try and make a cohesive look. Although it photographs nicely, it didn’t feel as comfortable in real life and because of that we rarely used this potentially super cool room. These are the limitations a lot of people encounter when trying to furnish and pull together a home; most of us are not made of money and these compromises have to be made. The sofa was re-covered in an old curtain […]

Hey guys! I just got the new West Elm catalog in the mail yesterday, and guess what I saw? This super cool Kilim rug in coral and white! I was shot through the heart, you guys! You know the first thing I’m gonna do is photoshop it into the sunroom to see how it could possibly, potentially, maybe work. Now I wasn’t really on the look-out for a rug for the sunroom, I was pretty satisfied with the way this cream shag rug that I pulled out of storage was looking (below) – and still could be. I really love how clean and white and airy everything is right now. However, I was on the hunt for something coral to tie in some of the pink and coral accents from our bedroom which share the same space with the sunroom. I’m kind of in love but also kind of on the fence. I think this Kilim rug would be a great compliment to the black and white Moroccan shag rug I currently have in the bedroom, but is the cream shag rug all I need? Whadda ya think? Should I go for it, or should I stick with the cream shag? While you’re thinking about that, I’ll think about considering to possibly start thinking about painting in the sunroom ;)

Yo, Dawgz! Just wanted to check in and give you guys an update on the sunroom project. First of all, I am totally stoked about the progress on this little room, so forgive me, I’m pretty eager to share the tiniest changes with you. I told you guys a few weeks ago, that along with upholstering the little sofa, that I also wanted to add a “Fauxdenza” to the narrow wall in the sunroom. The floor is sloped (the sunroom used to be an open air porch, and the sloped floor allowed for drainage) and I needed to add a very functional piece of furniture that didn’t take up a lot of visual weight. Duh, Fauxdenza = the ideal solution. In case you haven’t been getting the play-by-play over on Instagram here is the story. On Monday night I took a trip to Ikea, purchasing a handful of things including; 2 of the Akurum 36″ x 15″ cabinet boxes and 4 of the Applåd cabinet doors. This is my 3rd time installing Ikea cabinets, so the whole process comes pretty easily to me, and you know I ruled it like a bawse. Ikea really does make it simple. Finn (my 5 year old) and I started assembling the two box cabinets around 9am, we had the rail mounting system installed by 9:45 and the cabinet doors were on by 10:30! Talk about a big transformation in a little bit of time, at least I think so. If you want to get your fauxdenza on, and need a few more details, check out Morgan’s process over at The Brick House. This little room is quickly becoming one of my favorite rooms in the house and I think I’m going to try and make a habit out of spending at least an hour a day in this sunny space. It makes me super happy to sit in the sun and enjoy all of my green things – hopefully it won’t be long before I can crack the windows too. We have a small TV that my parents borrowed to me a year ago (whoops) that I put in the sunroom, I connected it to a Roku and an attena and now I can watch Kathie Lee and Hoda to my hearts content – what who doesn’t need a little KLG and Hoda in the morning? We also have plans of purchasing a […]

Hey Guys! Look, I did it! I upholstered the crap out of the sunroom sofa, and it looks so good! I was pretty intimidated by this project but I am really glad I took a chance and went for it. This was my first ever upholstery project. Sewing does not come naturally for me, and measuring always intimidates me, so I had two good reasons to be nervous about diving into this project. It was something that had to be done though, just look at the sofa before (below) – pretty retro and not in a good way. For those of you who don’t know. I have recently taken on the project of making the porch/sunroom off of our master bedroom a place that we actually want to hang out in. This room sold us on the house, and here we are four years later and it’s basically an eye sore that we try and avoid. The space itself is wonderful – bright, sunny and airy. It’s downside is that it’s small and has been on the bottom of the priority list when it comes to furnishing it. When we moved we had no design direction for the room, and were in need of furniture. We purchased a few things all willy-nilly-like on craigslist. One of them being this midcentury sofa for $100 – it was the perfect size for the room so I give us credit for that. It is narrow enough to fit nicely in the room without over powering it, the downside was that it was covered in tan and blue faux leather. I always knew that I was going to reupholster it, I just didn’t think it would take me four years. I want to make this room a place we hang out in god damn it! It’s so nice, and sunny, and wonderful, and it would probably do me well to enjoy and hour in here during these winter months. I get the winter SAD pretty bad – and they say sunlight is the best medicine for that sort of thing. I need this room in my life! So I took a deep breath and dove in tackling the biggest project on this porch to-do list. Over the last few days I have spent time measuring and cutting out fabric, assembling, sewing, tearing apart, re-sewing and taking trips to the fabric store (*side note, where […]

Hello buddies! I have been avoiding something for awhile now. It’s one of those things that I know will most likely be simple, it’s just the starting that’s hard. What can I say? Avoidance is easy. Here’s the deal, I want to recover the mid century six-cushioned sofa in our sunroom. The sunroom is located off the master bedroom upstairs, it’s the room that sold us on this house. It seemed like the perfect place for us to hide away from the kids and hang out at the end of the day. Unfortunately this room never became that for us. We furnished it quickly and inexpensively after we moved in, and since then not much has changed. About a year ago we threw an old green rug down on the floor to help insulate it during the colder days, since then it has become a dumping ground for stuff that doesn’t have a home. I’d really like to make this room into the room we always hoped it would be, not the room that seems like an afterthought. Also, the above photo was taken when I was trying to make it look good, it does not look like that now. As always, budget is a big factor for me, I want to update this and make it comfy on the cheap without spending a ton of cash. We have two pieces of furniture currently in the room. The orange upholstered vintage swivel chair has potential to be that fun bit of color in the space. I’d like to play off of it and add a blue graphic rug. We also have the six cushioned sofa which is the ideal proportion for the space, I don’t think I could get a better sized sofa if I tried. The sunroom is small (7′ x 11′) and a big sofa would overtake the room. I’d really like to replace the cushions and recover this sofa – I’m so nervous about it though. As it sits, it is covered in old curtains, underneath that is alternating blue and brown naugahyde cushions. Yah, it’s kind of a dog. When I mentioned doing this all the way back in July, a local reader, Laura of Lahlo Shelter – who also happens to be an upholsterer, offered me some good advice about where to find foam. I also bought this book and have watched a few youtube […]
