Hey, wow! I never expected it to be nearly a year in between posts. Shit. How fucked up was that last year? What an absolute major bummer quarantine was. I felt like before covid I was in such a groove with the blog, and then it turned quickly turned into not being able to give any effs about anything and just surviving day-to-day. That sounds dark, but that year was dark! My kids did distance learning from March 2020 to June of 2021. They went back to school 8 weeks ago. I was pretty deeply depressed for most of the winter. It was hard to do most things; as I’m sure you all experienced in your own ways. Anywho, on the up and up! It’s nearly the end of October. I have been enjoying transitioning my house back to a house and away from being everyone’s everything – school, office, shelter, entertainment, social hub. You should see me; I’ve been cleaning closets, reorganizing, making beds daily. I’m just a veritable whirlwind of order and cleanliness. Jokes aside, I needed to get the house back to being a house before I could even think about coming back to the blog and sharing again. I did do a few projects here and there over the last 18 months – it just didn’t feel like sharing them was the right thing to do at the time. Now that I’m feeling more settled I thought it might be a good time to begin to catch you all up. I’m going to title this series “The Lost Year” and then share projects I’ve done around home and the cabin – most of them at the cabin. The first project I’m sharing is what I think is close to the final iteration of the cabin kitchen! To catch you up to speed, the cabin kitchen started out as a very basic kitchen that had been showing some wear and tear. The cabinets are all built from standard lumber with simple plywood doors and drawers. It all starts summer 2017 soon after moving in. My Ma and I removed the upper cabinets that blocked the view from the lake. I updated the floors and painted before snow hit the ground the first winter, that update went a long way. The VCT floor tiles were a great solution for updating the kitchen and I was able to cover […]

Check out my summer project - the new cedar barrel sauna at the cabin! A quick little background, we jumped on the home improvement bandwagon just like everyone else did this year. We were looking for a project that was fully DIY to bide time this summer, but we also wanted the project to be something that could help us enjoy and get through the winter - which I'm sure will end up being a rough one. Enter, The Barrel Sauna! Not only did it provide me with a project for the summer, but it's gonna make winter a whole lot more doable. Hot humid therapy during those freezing cold winter months is gonna slay.

We've basically been living at our cabin for the last six months, so we've got to know how it functions pretty well. One of the things that really tends to grind our gears is the refrigerator! Most of the time I fall somewhere between a complete lack of motivation, and sheer boredom. And then every once in awhile I'll get a sudden burst of energy and I'll do all the things all at once.
We’ve been so happy with our new range and range hood at the cabin. It looks great in the space, except for the patch tile patch job that needed to be done. Perhaps this has happened to you? Maybe you needed to remove an over the range microwave or hood vent and realized the new replacement didn’t fit quite the same way as the old and your easy update has turned into a can of worms, because now you have to tile to patch.
Early on in my bathroom remodel I realized that I wouldn't be able to include a niche for the shower as I had hoped. Two of the three walls that surround the bath and shower are exterior walls, and because it gets so cold in NW Wisco (aka Wisconsin) in the winter months it would have caused problems to inset a niche between any of the studs on the exterior wall. The third wall contained the plumbing for our shower, and I didn't want to have to open up the wall to access it or deal with the headache that would be rerouting the plumbing just so that we could have a spot to put our shampoo. Since this is our cabin bath, and because we live like wild woods people when we are here - we don't have huge need for a lot of bath time accoutrements in this space. All we really need is stuff to wash our hair from time to time.

Being that it's the last day in January, I wanted to squeeze in a post about my plans for an upcoming organizational project. I know you have all heard of "spring cleaning" but honestly, what gets me through the middle and end of winter are indoor organizational projects. For me it helps to combat some of the SAD feelings and gives me some control - I can't control the weather, but I can make my environment work for me...

Hey Team! I wanted to dedicate an entire blog post to just how much I love the innovation that brought me/you/us the Samsung Frame TV. If you’re not familiar with the Frame TV, it’s a TV that moonlights as framed art! Samsung designed a TV that displays digital art (when in art mode), is able to be mounted flush on a wall just like a piece of artwork would, and the frame itself can be swapped out with interchangeable magnetic frames...

Having the cabin has taught me a few things about design. It can be done in stages and having a plan is a really good thing. When we took ownership of the cabin we knew that we needed to make it our own, and fast. Jeff especially has a hard time seeing the big picture, and he had his hesitations when it came to buying this particular cabin. He put a lot of trust in me seeing the bigger picture for it. To refresh your memory, let's go on a trip down memory lane, shall we...

Today I wanted to share how we share and save memories at the cabin. In addition to a guest book we have also started filling a bowl full of polaroid photos. Remember polaroids? They went extinct in the early oughts but have been recently brought back to life by The Impossible project! Shortly before digital photography became the norm, I received my bachelor's degree in fine arts and my major was photography. Everything I learned and was taught to me in the analog style. I used a light meter, took photos with a 4x5 large format camera and a cape, and photos and film were developed in a dark room. I love the spontaneity of a moment captured, there is something so fascinating about the artifact of light and chemistry as a representation of a moment in time..

Hello! Hope you guys are all well! We are doing great over here. I celebrated my birthday on Wednesday and last week we spent five whole days up at the cabin over Thanksgiving break. It has become a tradition to set up the tree the day after Thanksgiving for our fam, and we have really enjoyed having a tree at the cabin. We even discovered a way to keep the tree well watered without having to be there to water it...

I have always envisioned our cabin furniture being updated in phases, to get us started, we purchased affordable "get-cha-through" furniture and repurposed hand-me-downs from our home. It has always been a work in progress and I had planned on updating some of our cabin furniture pieces with comfier, cozier and more substantial long-term items as we advanced in our cabin ownership. We just recently hit two years of enjoying our cabin, and we had gotten to know our cabin well enough that it was easy to point out what needed improvement, and what we were missing in terms of how we used the space and what we were expecting out of furniture...

I know I have been missing the last few weeks. I’ve been racing the weather trying to tie up a bunch of loose ends at the cabin before the winter really starts to set in – which it’s starting to do right about now. I’ve spend a handful of extra long weekends at the cabin where I stay on to work after the family heads home for the week. There has been so much to do this year, and I hope to explain a lot of it in more detailed posts as I settle into my role as blogger and out of my role as full-time handyperson.
