Sedum I’m getting so excited that it’s almost garden time. Spring is my favorite time of year, and I am dying to get my hands dirty. I especially love that gardening is one of those things where there is always room for improvement. I couldn’t be happy if it was just done and there was nothing to do or improve upon. I’ve just ordered some soaker hose for irrigation in my raised beds. It’s not a super pro set-up but it will be more sophisticated then what I have going on now. I’m excited to see if this new system will have big effects on this seasons veggie crop. I’m also going to be trying my hand at DIY landscape lighting. Now that the gardens are becoming more mature, I think it’s the perfect time to add lighting, like real-deal grown up lighting. Don’t worry, I’ll post about that too. Also, the front steps will be finally replaced this summer with new concrete steps, which in turn will effect the shape of the surrounding garden beds. Our front steps are a huge embarrassment and have been on our to-do list for years, so to get them taken care of will be a huge relief and a big improvement to the curb appeal of the house. So, things are happening, and this March garden is just the start. I can’t wait to share lots more as the season progresses. Bleeding Hearts Lamium Rose Buds Hosta Day Lilies Heuchera Allium I planted two bulbs last fall and have only seen one so far – still have my fingers crossed. Peony Share this...
Veggies Hello, Friendz! As I mentioned earlier this summer, my garden has had a rough go of it this season. The side garden was torn up and trampled by worker dudes, the veggie garden couldn’t be accessed for maintenance due to piles of dirt next to them, and I lost my Japanese maple. Yes, I am sad to announce that the maple is officially a goner. Happily, I did replace it with a new Empire I Japanese maple and I planted it in a different location. I have my fingers and toes crossed for this one – so far it’s thriving. All of the ups and downs are all part of the gardening adventure, so I try not to feel too bummed out. I’m on the hunt for late summer flowering zone 4 perennials for shade and sun. I’m realizing (and you can tell by the pics) that I don’t have a lot flowering right now. I need to fix that and make a plan for next year. So all you green thumbs out there, let me know what I should be considering for next year’s late-summer-bloomers. A few weeks the hus-bo was out of town for the weekend and I was left to my own devices, I decided to go hard on the veggie garden. I spent the entire day out in the sun, pulling weeds, edging the borders, and replanting peas and leaf lettuce that had become over grown. It all looks kind of pretty now, and spending a full day in the garden made me so happy. The pole beans are growing out of control, we have cucumbers and kale. The carrots are almost ready for harvesting and the potatoes (aka french fries) look like they must be growing well under the soil. Zinnia Zinnias have always been a go to annual plant for me. I always plant them from seed and I love to see them in my sun-loving garden. The Zinnias are not coming in this year like they have in the past. I think that my sun garden perennials are becoming so large that they are shading the seedlings and causing them not to grow as mightily as they have in years past. I’m thinking this will be the last year that I seed them in the sun garden and instead will start seeding them in the small gardens next to the garage […]

Hello budz! I know I keep saying I am ‘so busy’ all the time, but I promise I will shut up about it soon. Life will be more relaxed after this week is over, and then I promise that I will begin to chat about new Ikea catalogs, my bedroom tanker project and other crap like that. I hope you don’t hate me for dumping a bunch of non-housy posts on you and being very slow to respond to your great comments (I will I swear it) but this last month has just been nuts! July has been full of birthdays, bridal parties, weddings, cabins and CSA boxes. So before you decide to never come back and visit me again, let me share one more CSA recipe (because it’s super good and it’s one of my favs) and then I’ll be back with some new home content. In case you didn’t know – My name is Alison Allen, and I am a watermelon addict. I have a refrigerator full of sliced watermelon all of the times. I eat it everyday as a snack, every morning with breakfast and late at night, whoops. When this recipe showed up in our veggie box this week I was amped, and it didn’t disappoint this watermelon lova. Did you dawgs know that watermelon can be served up in a super savory fashion with a little salt, pepper, olive oil and citrus? It’s the best – not kidding. Don’t forget that watermelon isn’t all sugar and water it’s actually made up of lots of good nutrients and provides a high amount of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants for a low amount of calories, blaow. This recipe is topped of with some highly fancy and very french chiffonade chopped basil, and I’ve made something very similar to it before with mint – I bet there are even other herbs that it would taste tyte with it too. If you’re looking for even more adventure (and quite a bit of onion breath), check out my old fav over here from Nigella Watson. Thanks to redEnvelope for gifting me this super sweet turquoise dipped Acacia wood bowl with tongs. I totally love it and was in mad need of a new salad bowl. Cucumber & Watermelon Salad with BasilRecipe from Driftless Organics Ingredients: ▼ 1 cucumber ▼ 3 cups watermelon cut into 1” cubes ▼ juice […]

Side Garden Hey Guys! I’ve been so busy lately, sorry if I am late to the show on the July Garden. I know it’s August and all, but I promise, all these photos are from July. The garden has been really grown into itself this year. There is always something new blooming, colors look good together and all the plants are nice and filled in. I am really, really proud of it. Let me show you around and you can see what’s blooming this month. Asiatic Lilies There are lilies everywhere! After 4 years the Asiatic lilies are growing in nice mounds now. I originally had been given individual shoots which I planted all around the backyard. Finally the bulbs have multiplied themselves enough times that I know have groups of lilies producing lots and lots of beautiful blooms. Side Garden Purples, blues and yellows along the side garden. Echinacea A new cone flower (aka ‘Fatal Attraction’ Echinacea) which I planted earlier this year. The stems are nearly purple, I totally love them. Rose My rose bush was happily blooming at the beginning of the month, but now there are no more buds. I’m a little worried about it, hopefully it is just a phase. Zinnias The zinnias began blooming right after Finn’s birthday – they took awhile longer this year, I imagine it has something to do with all the rain and the cooler weather we’ve been experiencing. Happy to see them blooming, and am looking forward to having many beautiful garden bouquets from these plants that I started from seed. Asiatic Lilies & Hosta Day Lily I told you, lots of lilies. Here are my yellow day lilies. I split these a few years ago and now they are coming in as nice hearty bushes. Coleus I tried something new this year, planting a large coleus as a border annual plant on the side of the house. I am amazed at how large it has gotten, and would like to try it again next year, maybe in the backyard gardens. Salad Garden I had to include a shot of the lettuce garden. When it first started growing I was worried that it wouldn’t fill in. It looked pretty sad, but now I have so much lettuce and arugula. We can have salads everyday – it’s way awesome! Hydrangea […]

Hanging Basket Hey, Guys! Hope you had a cool weekend, I know we did. We spent it up at the cabin, and I’ll be sharing a few photos in the coming days. Anyways, if you didn’t notice it’s July 1st and it’s time to recap you on my June garden. Lots of things have been happening over the last month in the garden. This year the garden is full sized, some plants are actually bigger that I anticipated them being and I may have to thin a out a few, or even move some around. I already lost a Delphinium because the Hostas were choking it out, and I’ on the verge of losing one of my phlox for the same reason. There has been so much rain that the Hostas are insanely large, I’m talking 3+ feet in diameter. I also have been a bad documenter and have missed taking pics of a few blooms, but I’m hoping to catch what I missed over the month of July. Here’s how things are shaping up this month: Yellow Day Lily What is It? Guys! What the heck is this? It’s the second year it’s appeared in my garden, this time with more vengeance then the last. It’s big, it’s leafs are reminiscent of Wild Geranium or possibly even Anemone but I don’t remember ever planting it. It’s tall, about 3 feet and has what I would describe as layers of leaves. Is it a giant weed or is it actually a real plant? Someone must know. Salvia Petunias These are the petunias I grew from seed, they are large now and starting to hang over the sides of the planters. I would totally grow petunias from seed again, only next time I’d start them in February. Painted Fern Purple Lamium Hosta Flower Certain types of hostas can produce beautiful orchid like flowers – thick, waxy and full of soft detail. Peony Huchera Flower Hydrangea Share this...
Bleeding Heart Friendz! I’m so excited that it’s Friday, and I am even more excited that spring has finally hit the midwest. Like always, we go from cold to hot and steamy in a matter of days, but whatever! I’m just glad it’s jorts weather, ya know?! I’ve been spending a lot of time tidying up the gardens over the last few weeks and I’m excited to share with you a few pics. Things are looking lush, and I love the new fence as a backdrop. I knew that green fence wasn’t pretty but I didn’t realize how much of a difference our new fence would make. So here how things have been shaping up over the last month, it’s crazy how much things have changed in only 30 days. Side Garden Iris Side Garden Weeping Crab Apple Peonies Tulips Dogwoods Solomon’s Seal Crab Apple We planted the crabapple right after we moved in, this will be the fifth year it’s been in our yard. We quickly dubbed it “Finn’s Tree” and have been taking a photo of him in front of it every spring when it’s in bloom. That tree and that kid are getting huge fast!
Jacob’s Ladder Hello from the land of viral pneumonia and snow flurries. The kids and I are all super sick because we just had to end the cold & flu season with one more major illness. We started spring with a bang, and by bang I don’t mean excitement and anticipation, I mean the opposite of that. Okay, I know I am being the world’s biggest negative nelly, I’m just so over cold, snow, winter, being inside, grey days and sickness. Can’t a girl get a break? Oh wait, I just did… in Atlanta… with Bruce. I honestly don’t mean to sound like a major whiney bummer (although I know I do), I really am trying to keep it positive and look on the bright side, you guys. For instance, my plants give me hope. They are small and tiny, but growing! Big changes in my garden are happening! I bundled up to brave the cold and rain just to take a few photos of my April garden so I could continue on the monthly-garden-photo-sharing tradition. I’ve been taking monthly photos of my garden for the last two gardening seasons. It’s been fun to share the small improvements in my garden with all of you. I hope you guys enjoy seeing what I am up to, but I have to admit taking these photos is partly selfish. It’s been really great to have these images as reference to look back at when I get the gardening itch mid-January or so. I’ve been pouring over old garden photos for the last few weeks getting myself super amped and excited to see my plants. After 7 long months, I really do begin to miss them. Iris Sedum – Stonecrop Tulips The rabbits like my Tulips. Heuchera Peonies Ferns Salvia Share this...
My August Garden Music: “Lift Every Voice” from Lazerbeak – used with permission Hey Guys! I decided to try something different this month, instead of sharing with the usual monthly garden update photo style, I instead am sharing with you this cool vid I made of the yard. It’s as much for you as it is for me, because I know next spring I am going to be dying for a little garden inspiration. It’s so sad that the season is coming to an end, this morning the temperature was hovering around 47º when I got up for my morning walk. I imagine it won’t be long before I have to say goodbye to my garden, cut it back, and hunker down for another (hopefully shorter) winter. I’m sad to say goodbye but looking forward to the fall, which might be my favorite season of the year. I’m really happy with the way the garden grew in this year, it finally feels like a real garden, and I am proud to have people over to hang in the backyard and share in all its awesomeness. Thank you all for indulging me and letting me share these posts of my garden throughout the summer, I love to see the progress over time and I hope that it might give some of you a little inspiration too.
Asiatic Lily The gardens came through in perfect fashion for the kids birthday’s, both which were hosted in the backyard. This year really has been the best garden year one on record. Everything is much more mature and filled in, thus leaving me with a lot more time on my hands, I miss having garden projects to conquer. At least I have the lawn, I am most def turning into one of those crazy grass waterers. Zinnia Dreamland Pink Hybrid I’ve been waiting patiently for the Zinnia’s since I planted the seeds back in May. You may have remembered that I’m trying out a more tailored style of zinnias this year. They are always one of my favorite flowers in the garden, and are the best for bouquets. The downside is that they usually get a little unruly, especially if you are growing the zinnias with the big blooms. This year I went for a new variety that boasted an 18″ stem and a 4″ bloom. They’re holding up to all their promises and I love them. I’m way into the stout little pink bush shapes they are creating. I was able to pick what colors I wanted too, normally I just get zinnia seeds that come in an array of colors, this year I couldn’t reist the pink. Go zinnias! Zinnia Dreamland Ivory Hybrid I also have a few growing in Ivory too! Side Garden This side garden is looking much better than it did last year. Hands down this little funny garden has been my hardest garden to curate. It’s super sunny, its straight, there are no organic shapes and there is a giant green fence behind it holding back the neighbors huge overgrowing bushes. Last year in a fit of frustration, I dug the entire garden up, split everything and then replanted it. Now it is much more organized, thankfully. The hostas run all along the front and “contain” the rest of the flowers. I also have saliva, sedum, lilies, bleeding hearts, peonys, iris, stone crop and zinnias filling out the rest of the space. The zinnias love it over here, they seriously hate being grown anywhere else. Believe me, I’ve tried. Cone Flower Hosta Flowers Side Garden The side garden is a little overwhelmed with hosta flowers, but I like it. Dahlia Bud Look! A Dahlia bud! The earliest […]

Bleeding Heart Finally, we made it to a May garden post you guys, and I finally have photos to share with you of real actual plants. The first month of spring is always the most exciting in the garden, things grow so quickly, it’s insane! Just two weeks ago there were barely plants making there way out through the soil, and now everything is on the cusp of blooming. I wish that there were more blooms to share in this months garden post, everything is just teetering on the edge of beautiful. It’s driving me crazy! I’m beyond thrilled to see everything filling in so well this year, my plants are all finally reaching maturity and I can start to see the big plan all come together. It’s been raining tons which is good and bad, the garden loves it, the weeds do too. I’m just starting my 3rd round of weeding (blech), but it all comes with the territory. Pagoda Dogwood Dogwood, Tulip & Lamium This is seriously the first year these Dogwoods have looked pretty. The flowers are amazing, and I never really noticed them in the past. I spent a lot of time last summer pruning them. I actually have been taking photos of my progress with them over the last year so if anyone is interested in how I turned my mangled shrubbery into an okay looking set of trees, I’ll be happy to show you. Dianthus Crabapple Ruby Tears Crabapple Tree Our crabapple season was short lived. I always look forward to seeing the blooms (we have two trees), and this year the trees bloomed and then heavy rains pummeled the pedals before we even got a second to enjoy them. This crabapple tree (Gus’ tree) is the best when it’s in full bloom. Iris So close! “Come on guys!, Bloom!!” Peony I told you, everything is bursting. Jacob’s Ladder Solomon’s Seal Hosta Just today the Hostas started to open up. Backyard Garden I think this backyard border garden is turning out pretty tyte. The grass is long right now (we’re planting new seed) but with a fresh cut it will look super great. I think I might actually have to do some thinning out in this side garden later this summer. Finn & Fern For reference, Finn wanted me to show you how tall […]

Daylilies Well guys, I had to do it. I just had to post photos of my April garden, not posting would just be too sad. If you remember, by this time last year I had already posted about my March and April gardens. Still, the bits of green popping up throughout the yard give me hope. I’m sure my neighbors think I’m crazy. I’m out there every few hours trying to see if I can spot anything new. I am so ready to see stuff growing! Now, should I even mention the record 6″ of snow that is predicted to begin tomorrow evening? Fer real guys, this is crazed, and I could, and probably will cry. Tulips Fox Trot, Spring Green & Peach Blossom One of the most exciting things about this years spring garden are the new additions I planted last fall. I planted 50 bulbs last year, apprx 30 Tulips in a variety of colors and 20 Daffodils. I’ve seen a few of these babies begin to pop up but I am eager to see them all! I hope that all my new bulbs made it through the winter, and will make an appearance in the coming week. I am hoping so hard this layer of snow doesn’t ruin what’s already sprouted up. Creeping Sedums Sedums are always one of the first things to spot in the yard, I’m pretty sure you could spot them in the middle of winter if you were to remove all the snow. They’re hardy little sons of guns. Iris Variegated Sweet Iris I ordered two new Iris bulbs from Jackson & Perkins last fall too. I’ve seen these around the neighborhood a few times, and have always been envious. They are called Variegated Sweet Iris and have a light purple flower with variegate foliage ranging from green, to yellow-green to white. They look amazing even after they have flowered in the spring. I put them out on the boulevard figuring these hardy plants could take the beating from the snow, salt and sand during the winter months. Let’s get on with it already, can’t wait to see this new stuff! Sedum These Sedum know how to grow and make feel like spring is on its way. Bleeding Hearts The Bleeding Hearts are popping! I took these photos yesterday, and today they are already twice as high. I […]

I thought I’d share shots of my actual gardens rather than close-ups of flowers that I have been sharing in my other gardeny posts. Not too much has changed in my flower beds over the last month except for the weed growth. This is the time of year when I tend to give up on watering and weeding altogether (I am a horrible gardener, I know.) The temperature is always too hot and there is always too much end of summer life going on to give it my gardens more care. That being said, things are looking good for the most part, I’ve got two gardens recovering from a transplant but looking forward to an even better garden scene next summer. Can you believe garden season is almost over, bah ha wha (that’s me crying). Besides trimming my plants back I have never really prepared my gardens for fall. Anyone have any suggestions on fall fertilizers, techniques, or other pro tips. Send ’em my way. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Holy Shiz! July is over! That went way too fast guys. Makes me a little sad. Well, at least we have August to look forward to, and honestly, I kinda got into the 60º fall weather we were having in Ireland. I’m looking forward to fall just a little bit. Anyway, enough about all that stuff. Here’s some photos of my July Garden. It’s finally starting to fill back in and look a little more garden like after being trampled by the painters in June. I know that this will not year will not be the year of the beautiful perfect lush manicured gardens, but hopefully next year it will look a little better. Also, note to self. All that obsessing I did over the lawn back in the spring didn’t really pay off. When it gets hot in the summer weeds grow and grow and grow and the lawn starts turning into a crab grass bonanza. Sometimes I feel like the only way to really win is to start over and re-sod. Oh wellz I guess. In other garden news, the Zinnia’s are starting to bloom. I know I know, the end of July and Zinnia’s are blooming, wha? Guess what?? Seeding Zinnia’s inside is not a good idea, it takes them too much time to recover once they are transplanted. Next spring we will start seeds in the garden – be warned my future self. The Dahlia’s are also blooming, I have three varieties planted and they all are looking pretty wonderful. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Holy cow, it’s already been a month already. Well I was really looking forward to June’s garden until the painters came. All the handwork that I put in during March, April and May was ruined by heavy ladders. It’s not a total loss, but the weeds are out of control and so much has been trampled. My day lilies just started blooming last week, and they give some hope to this sad state of affairs. The kids and I went out yesterday and purchased this Rose. I’ve never had a Rose before, so I’m not sure how successful I will be at helping it survive. It can get up to three feet tall (as tall as the fence) and I am looking forward to seeing it grow and fill in. There is a spot in one of my garden’s that makes home to a huge Bleeding Heart during the spring, but by June it begins to look sad and yellowed and eventually I cut it back. I bought this Rose in hopes of compensating for some of the empty space that comes after the Bleeding Heart has been retired for the season. This is the first year I’ve grown Caladium. I have some in the backyard and I planted some bulbs around the tree in the boulevard. I really like it, but I am a sucker for foliage. The Caladium looks totally great layered with some lime green Hostas. These Tiger Lilies never disappoint. Every year they get bigger and bigger and make more of statement in the garden. The flower pots near the front steps are looking great. They are on the verge of overflowing and I love it. I just planted the Sunpatiens in the window box out front earlier this week. I’ve been managing to barely keep them alive waiting for the painters to finish. I hope they fill in quickly! And just because I wanted you to see how bad it can be: My front garden. Totally destroyed. I decided to make the best of a bad situation. I dug everything up, set it out on the front walk, grabbed some Hostas and day lilies from the back and split it all up. Then replanted it all in a much more organized fashion. It won’t look great this season but hopefully my thriftiness will be rewarded next spring. I just gotta keep it all alive ’till […]

Totally loving my May garden! I have a few new additions to the garden this year, some of which I have never seen blossom before. One of my fav’s are the Peonies that my friend Nicole gave to me last fall. I’ve always wanted Peonies in the garden because they are one of my all time most favorite flowers. Altogether I had 3 Peony blooms, hey, it’s a start. I bet next year I will have full on Peony bushes. Can’t wait! I put these Dianthus in the garden in August of last year. I love the hot pinky purple color and the smokey colored foliage. The contrast is really wonderful. I had no idea my garden was turning into such a pink and purple zone until I took these photos. When I originally started my garden I envisioned a red, white and green garden. There are so many purple and pink perennials that thrive in Minnesota, it’s no surprise that my garden would take on these tones. The Iris above are from my Grandma’s house only 3 summers ago. They are huge now, and produce at least 20 blooms per plant. Totally Iris crazed in my backyard. Another first. This is the poppy I got from the U of M flower sale last spring. It produced two blooms this year, one of which fell victim to a kid, or a husband, or a ghost, or someone who is not me. The other was this lovely thing. I never gave Choral Bells any thought before I started gardening. Now I really love how sweet their blooms are, and I adore the slight differences in the colors and texture of their leaves. Even more purple!! I know, I know, I have a hard time believing it myself (I am so not a purple girl). Salvia and Lamium are taking a prominent place throughout the backyard. They are both such an easy plant to split. The Salvia offers nice height and the Lamium makes a perfect ground cover blooming twice a season. It’s hard not to like them. I am looking forward to seeing Lily’s, Dahlia’s, Hosta Flower’s, Zinnia’s and the rest of my annual flower pots start to fill in and bloom in June. This has seriously been the best garden season to date, can’t wait to see how the rest of the summer shapes up. Share this... Facebook Pinterest Twitter

Ah yeah guys, we’ve got some minor bloomage going on! My bleeding hearts are huge and beautiful. I love them so much, I wish they would bloom all summer long! The Sedum’s are getting bigger, they’ve grown so much since their first season 2 summers ago. I just transplanted this little guy from the front of the house to the back corner of the backyard. I am actually surprised he decided to come back this year. At the end of last he wasn’t looking so good. The backyard is a way better spot for this little dude. This is a brownish yellowish Lily I got from my mom when we first moved in. I really don’t love it that much, but I love my mom, so it’s staying. My Hostas are poppin’ This Fern photo was from a week or two ago. My favorite time of their summer stay is when they are first showing their little fiddle heads. The Dogwood’s are barely in bloom. My Peony has ants on it, I hear that’s a good thing. One of the few varieties of Choral Bells I have in the yard. This one is called Regina and has the sweetest stems of pink flowers. It’s in my front foundation garden, one of the few plants out there I’d like to keep. Yeah for Poppies! I had two last year, but one was accidentally mistaken for a weed. This will be the first season of seeing this Poppy bloom. Can’t wait they are one of my favorite spring flowers. I love my Crab Apple Tree in the front yard but this year right as it was about to bud we got a cold snap and now it only has a few white blooms. I’m totally bummed that it’s not full of flowers. My favorite garden helper. He was helping take some photos when I shot this pic. He is the best and I love him soooooooooo much. Crazy kid. Here are a few shots of my flower beds. These are mainly just for me, for reference. Next April when I am dying for spring I’ll be able to look at these and know that there is hope on the way. Yes, can’t wait for May, so may things will start blooming, huzzah! In other news, I am still sick, ugh. It’s totally the worst. Sorry in advance for any lackluster posting. Hoping […]

Hey guys! I’m excited about this post, because this post means that it’s officially happening, SPRING! We had a few days of really super nice weather 70º’s and sunny. It was the best. Now it’s like 50º and it makes me sad, but at least my garden is growing! Last Summer I tried to take a pictures of my garden during the summer months so I could document it’s process. More than anything it’s just reference for me so I can go back and compare years. I thought I’d go ahead and start it up again. This is probably the earliest I will ever possibly start it, but what they heck, right? I have a March garden this year and here it is: I severely pruned the Dogwood’s in the backyard this spring. At some point someone decided they should be pruned as a bush and not as a tree. I’m trying to correct that because two Dogwood tree’s would look so pretty in the backyard. We will see. The Peonies on the left are from Colz, and are about 100 years old. This is their 2nd official summer in my yard and they look like they’re taking to the new environment. And those Hosta’s are peeping up, ready fro their 3rd summer in the backyard. One of my favorite signs of spring, Bleeding Hearts. Love ’em! Also, we are going to pick up some lumber this weekend for our raised bed garden. I need to start getting some of my seedlings in the ground during the coming weeks. Can you believe it? Early spring is the best. More on that soon. Share this...
