I have a vintage table in my kitchen. I used to use it as a computer desk, but I have such a small amount of counter space that my husband added casters and now it has a permanent home under the kitchen window. It has an enamel top and it serves as the home of my kitchenaid mixer, and often a crock pot, a blender/food processor and/or bread machine. It is the place we sort the mail, the surface where I roll out pasta, occasionally eat breakfast and often, where I guest sit down for an aperitif while I’m finishing up meal prep. It is also the place I do a lot of food photography because it gets natural light, during some parts of the year anyway. Totally indispensable and I really like that it isn’t a standard-issue island.

Have you watched any of Dowton Abbey? The servants’ quarters has this amazing kitchen with a huge wooden table in the middle – they use it to prepare meals but also to eat at at the end of the day. We’ve had both, and I do prefer an island. I find the height better for food prep (I’m 5’5″, so maybe someone shorter would prefer a table), and I like that if someone is sitting while another person is standing, the height difference isn’t too crazy. :)
