In reply to Rachel. Yes, Okay, so stripper is the worst, right? The mess is insane, I have an old pot full of goo too. I thought that our stairs had layer of paint, but it must be that there was some glue layers mixed in there as well. Good luck with the project!

Ahhh, I’ve been spending so much time in the past week trying to fix up our basement/back door stairs. Seeing your lovely after photos is just the motivation I need to help me finish the project. Our stairs had hideously ugly ’70s carpet stapled to them, and underneath that was layers of glue from some even earlier, uglier carpet. I hear ya on the stripper, because I have spent way too much time in the past two days painting on Klean Strip adhesive stripper, and then scraping off the gooey, disgusting glue mess. That was after I had given up on just sanding it off. But next up is more sanding! I’ll just keep your stairs in mind while I sand.

Having refinished my share of staircases in our 118-year-old house, I can feely appreciate the confusing mix of horror and joy that is repairing a staircase like this. Your finished product looks great! Kudos to you for sticking with it and finishing the whole project. I’ve got one more staircase to finish and your post is nothing if not inspiring!
