My house has similar trim and an elaborately trimmed fireplace, but with beige tile inside the wood, which looks very dated to me. I’m trying to get ideas for revamping it. Any chance you’d share a picture of the fireplace? I love what you’ve done to your home, it looks bold and authentic.

I’ve been scouring the internet for pictures of staircases in homes with wood trim and lighter colored wood floors… we are completely redoing our staircase and just racking my brain trying to figure out what color to stain the treads. Railing and newels will be the same shade as all the wood trim, but should the treads be the same as the floor, same as the trim, or a shade lighter than the trim?? Looks like yours are the same as the trim and railing?

I am struggling finding an accent wall color that pairs with the different woods. The rest of my walls are dove (behr brand,– has a slight gray tinge in certain lighting).

Side question – What do you do or have you done, if anything, to clean/refresh your woodwork. I am looking for advice for doing my own (kinda scruffy looking) 105 year old woodwork. There is so much information out there that it is hard to know where to start.

Thanks so much, Caroline! Your childhood home sounds lovely! Our kids don’t have enough clearance to make it down the banister, otherwise I’m sure they would. That’s too bad that the old houses in your area are hard to come by, but it’s so nice to think that they have become legacy properties. I don’t hear of that happening often here.

I’m a big sucker for houses with a lot of old timey personality and wood paneling and big staircases! I grew up in a 150 year old house which had a long straight wood staircase and a big pedestal with a ball up top at the end. Never went down the stairs normally, always slid down the rail and I used to dress up the pedestal in all my winter gear which was a nightmare for my mother every morning when I had to undo it to get dressed :D I love the dark wood and the dark blue colour half way. All of it is exactly my style heaven! The only old houses in our area (Ottawa, Capital city of Canada) are closer to the downtown core and worth well over half a million dollars and most of them were inherited over generations and never renovated so you’d have to be a millionaire to buy and fix them up. Plus we live about 45 min out in the suburbs where there is no houses with character (only new, builder’s grade crap). But one day, I will build my dream house and it will be just as glorious as yours! That staircase……..be still my heart!
