Deuce Cities Henhouse

If you're familiar with the blog, you might recognize the garden picture below. This is the most sloppy garden in our backyard - there's always one that you kinda neglect. I've been slowly filling in the base of the garden with "leftover" perennials for the last few years - by leftover I mean things that I have divided and stuck in here all willy-nilly-like. There are a lot of Hostas, a few READ MORE

A Cool Fall Wedding

Jeff and I went to our friends, Mark & Arielle's wedding this weekend. I've been to a lot of weddings in my day, but this wedding took the cake (ha) for best hand made decorations. So like all good craft bloggers I decided I should take some photos and share ...

Photoshop: The New Time Travel?

Check it out, this lady just made editing photos easy, and a little fun. As you can see from the looks of this picture, me and Finn time traveled right into the seventies using one of the many action available for download. Now photo editing is as simple as a ...

I’m a Minnesota State Fair Convert

Nicole and I head on over to the "Great Minnesota Get Together" yesterday afternoon with Elsa & FInn. It is her mission to teach me that the state fair is cool. I never was down with the crowds and blisters, but a few pronto pups later I was beginning to ...

Work in Progress: My 1st Sock

This is my first attempt at knitting a pair of socks. I started with a simple ribbed pattern because I don't need anything too complex to blow my mind. In this photo: the calm before the storm. I'm starting the heel next and who knows, it could all go straight ...

Toddler food, what to do?

Toddler food, what to do?

As a first time mom I am quickly becoming very confused about what sort of food to feed a toddler. I've been going mental trying to figure out what to make for him, how often I should make it, how much should he have to eat, is it too fatty, ...

Auntie Hen Parties

Saturday afternoon I brought Elsa over to my Aunt and Uncle's house for a visit. When I arrived I was surprised to find all of my Aunts gathered around the dining room table, painting bird houses.
I am not exactly sure who's idea this was but it was certainly a ...
Rubber Baby Buggy Bumpers

Rubber Baby Buggy Bumpers

In preparation for the arrival of my little baby chicken, Elsa, I decided that I was going to make bumpers for her crib. During a trip to my favorite fabric store with Scoops, I found this pretty pretty fabric by Heather Bailey.

I had found some patterns for bumpers and based ...

Hi! I’m Alison Allen

I started Deuce Cities Henhouse in 2009 – a blog about fixing up and restoring my 110-year-old Minneapolis home and updating our worn out and out, dated Wisconsin cabin. My family and I (my husband and two boys) moved into our current home nearly ten years ago, and since then I’ve been chronicling my journey of owning, renovating, decorating and DIY-ing our home.

I’m passionate about empowering women to take on projects that they might have normally not had the confidence to do, incorporating modern design and aesthetic into my home, thoughtful design solutions, and landscaping. I’ve done it all, from easy do-it-yourself home improvement projects to full on renovations and remodels.
