Finn and I put together a little tutorial for you on how to make pinwheels. We used pinwheels as a centerpiece for Finn’s 3rd birthday last weekend, and it’s such a super easy and fast way to add a little fun to any party, we had to share our recipe. Here are you ingredients for success: Cool Paper Fancy Thumb Tacks Wood Dowel Scissors Hole Punch I’ve seen a lot of online tutorials that suggest using a pencil with an eraser as the stem for the pinwheel but I think the end result looks much better if you pick up some 12″ dowels from your local hardware store or Michael’s. We just press the thumb tack straight into the dowel and it works perfectly fine, no need to use an eraser. We bought our “cool paper” at Michael’s we picked it up in the scrap booking section for .59 cents a sheet, but you could get cool paper at any cool store. Step 1. Fold a piece of paper diagonally to create a square. Step 2. Cut squares out of your paper, we recommend cutting 6-8 inch squares otherwise your pinwheel might get a little huge.*It’s good to vary sizes [...]

Finn’s 3rd Birthday Backyard Party

We made it! We were able to celebrate Finn’s 3rd Birthday this weekend without having to worry about any new brother showing up. We pushed up Finn’s birthday party a week early to prevent any tiny party crashers and it worked out perfectly. Since my energy level is hovering around 0 these days we had a really low key party, which ended up being one of the nicest parties we’ve ever hosted. Instead of going totally nuts on party decor like I did last year, I just focused on a few essentials, one of them being Finn’s cake. Would you believe it if I told you that this is the first birthday Finn has actually eaten his cake. I guess he has an aversion to frosting, but chocolate icing is not frosting, it’s just chocolate, and adding “chocolate chips” can’t hurt either. The cake was a success and got 100% totally eaten. I also purchased a few simple rice paper daisies, paper straws for the lemonade and Gladiola’s from the farmer’s market. Three totally cheap and easy ways to liven up this par-tay. Snacks were served in lieu of hosting a BBQ with all the fixins’ like we have in [...]

Elsa turned 1 on 7/16. It is truly amazing what can happen in a year! In a mere 365 days, my Girl Elsa has gone from a tiny little helpless bundle to a walking, babbling, curiously independent little girl. This blows my mind! We had a Birthday cookout for her, complete with brats, potato salad, fruit salad, baked beans and CAKE!!! We invited our Family and Friends and made a great afternoon of it. Elsa was a good helper during the preparations. Here we are making potato salad. I found this cake over at Wisk Kid WAY back when Elsa was just a brand new girl. I decided the second that I saw it that it was the perfect cake to commemorate the first year of my Girls life. This cake is delicious. You should make it. Here is the cake, all dolled up and ready for the party. My frosting didn’t come together as well as I would have liked it to, but it tasted pretty dang good! My homie, M. Stewart helped me make these tissue paper pom-poms. Big shout out to my other Lady, K. Johnson for her help putting these things together as well. Doing crafty [...]

My little dude turned 2 last week! It’s a crazy feeling being a mom of a 2 year old. You start to realize how much your life has changed for the better in such a short amount of time. In honor of Finn, we host a backyard bbq birthday partay! Here he is on his big day with his “2″ shirt that we picked up from our Minneapolis neighbor over at FOX AND OWL. He managed to get mustard all over it within the first 3 minutes of his party. What can I say, we have one of those “always-messy” kids. The party planning all started a few weeks ago with an invitation. Finn’s been in love with a red wagon down at the neighborhood hardware store and I’ve known for a few months that it was destined to be his 2nd birthday present. I’m not such a huge fan of themes so I tried to be subtle about it. I gocco’d these FINNvites myself. You can see more about my process over here at my Yo!, Gocco Flickr set. Let me start with the best stuff first, the prettiest part of a party; cakes and desserts. I don’t know [...]

What better way to celebrate mom’s birthday than a delicious brunch. I think we can all agree the breakfast is the best meal you could ever eat so I did it up big for mom’s bday. Here’s the stats:Homemade Coffee CakeCarmel Rolls from scratchEgg BakeFruitDelicious Bacon from Everett’sAnd Scoops Famous Potatoes Have you ever made coffee cake from scratch? This was my first, and I realize that there is no other way to have a coffee cake unless you bake it yourself. So GOOD! I followed this recipe on epicurious and ended up with the most delicious coffee cake ever. My son now thinks he should have “Cake” for breakfast every day of the week. These things looked pretty awesome but only turned out OKAY. Not enough carmel!!!, I mean what’s the point? Seriously? My mom is one of the lucky ones who get’s to enjoy peony’s at every birthday. My new yard came equiped with one large peony bush that only wanted to make one small flower. These beauties came straight from the grocery store… Insert sad face here. And as promised, a fancy knit dishcloth. I followed this pattern from this very thorough and indepth dish-cloth-pattern site. So [...]
