Hope you guys are all having a good hump day. It’s the last week of school for the kiddos so things are about to get buck. Anyway, before the chaos beings let me share my May garden pics with you.
I guess I have a thing for purple and pink this year, after seeing all my spring flowering perennials laid out here in my May garden post, it’s pretty obvious. I was so happy to see the gardens this spring, especially since a few of my fav spring flowers (like the white peony above) fell victim to the fence installation last year. Everything is very mature this year, maybe even a bit too mature, like they are totally turning into moody grunge teens (#jokes, I’m not funny). I see some thinning and reorganizing in my future.
In an effort to create even more privacy along the fence I planted two Warsaw Nike Clematis along the fence. They can grow up to 8′ so fingers crossed, they’d be a real nice addition in future years.

The garden is having some trouble this year. I think the seeds have been very confused by the extreme temp shifts this spring.

Thanks for the update! I’d love some more veggie garden posts and follow-ups. I used your tutorial and built 3 big raised beds ala SFG, and am anxiously awaiting some movement in the ground. I did mostly transplants and mine are looking pretty stubby after 3 weeks in the ground. My lettuce looks half the size of yours and my peppers all look like they want to die. I wondered if it’s all the rain and relatively cool temps we’ve had. With my peppers I’m wondering when I should ditch them and try something else. Oh, and I tried corn and the squirrels have already dug up a few. So I think I’ll replace them too, or is it too late? And I’ll need to build some sort of fencing around it. Thoughts? Do you get the critters? When do you jump ship on a plant that doesn’t look healthy?

I do think transplanting takes some time – it’s a shock to the system for those little guys. I’d wait it out. Regarding the peppers, I would wait – my theory with gardening is always trial and error, if they never come around then you know for next year to try a different location, buy them from the store, or take them out of the garden all together. Are they in a very sunny spot?? – they need tons of sun. Anyway, I normally stick with plants until they die, you never know if they might come around.
I don’t know what to tell you about the pests, except that squirrels are the worst! I have one that has repeatedly dug up a new iris.
Lastly, I am having a slow start with my garden too – the greens are the only things flourishing, but they like the cold weather – I put mine out a long time ago as well (end of March), so that might have something to do with the size difference. Everything else in my garden is taking its sweet time this season.
Love your garden recaps! Your garden is what one wants to be when it grows up :). We just moved and the previous tenant left me a nice pre-edged, pre-mulched, ready-to-dig-around-in area along the fence am I’m using your gardens as a bit of inspo. I’m always drawn to purple anything, so I’m really loving your gardens this year :)
Awh, thanks Lori! Your backyard sitch sounds tyte, you have a solid base to work with. Have some friends share some hostas and salvia, you’ll be on your way in no time.
My fave aunt cut off some of her monster hosta for me on Mother’s Day, so this plant is my most prized thing ever… But some of the root broke off and only left the crown. I’m trying to root it now. Have you ever had to do that? Wondering about the success rate with it. Also, thanks for sharing your garden skillz!!
