Achieving Urban Cabin

Kitschy Modern Cabin

Hey guys, it’s me: your resident urban cabin enthusiast. I’ve been hung up on this “urban cabin” idea for awhile now. I’m sure you’ve heard me talk about it, but maybe I’ve never exactly explained the concept. First of all, let’s talk about the term “cabin” – or as some Wisconsin people like to say: “cottage”. The cabin is a place that all of us Midwesterners know and love. Not trying to exclude other genres of locality here, but this is a very Midwestern thing. Here in Minnesota we live in the land of 10,000 lakes, ya know. When you go to a cabin, you’re not really going to a shack in the woods. You’re going to a lake with a house on it. There’s usually at least one boat there, if not more, and you usually spend most of that time on, in, or near the water. The making of a day at the cabin: Your day starts off slowly. Usually sometime around noon you will partake in long, leisurely breakfasts full of salty and delicious foods and lots of different breakfast cocktails. Post-breakfast you’re feeling pretty cool – so cool that you may even decide to take a [...]

Sofa Swap

Porch Sofa

Old, New Sofa Guys, I’ve only been talking about it for like 9 months, but our new living room sofa is being delivered tomorrow!!! I’m so excited, I can barely stand it. And although I’m so excited about the new living room furniture, I’m a little sad about replacing the porch sofa with the old living room sofa, and saying goodbye to the current wicker porch couch. My emotions have gotten the best of me and I now have a sofa dilemma on my hands; does the old living room sofa make it’s home on the new porch, or do I stick with the good ol’ funny porch sofa? We’ve been “surviving” in the porch with a hand-me-down white wicker sofa. The blue cushioned wicker sofa with white polka dots came to live with us in 2008 after living the first 7 years of it’s life on my parents back porch. At first our relationship was strictly utilitarian; we needed a place to sit while hanging on the porch. Then, somehow I began to love that weird misshapen sofa. Spending pregnant afternoons with Finn, taking spring naps in the sun, and staying up way too late with good buddies all [...]

Finally, a Game Table in the Porch!

April 24, 2013
Tulip Table in the Porch

Guys! I’m moving full steam ahead with the spring even if the weather isn’t. That being said, I got a new table for the porch last night, and I played cribbage on it, drank a beer, and listened to the Twins game while wearing my coat. It felt good! I am so excited about this table, let me tell you why. You know I love my porch, it is hands down our favorite place in the house. I never thought I would love 400 square feet of space only usable for part of the year so GD much, but I do. For as much as I love gushing over furniture and decor, I’ve never tried to put a look together in the porch. It’s such a hodge podge of hand me downs. The sofa is white wicker with royal blue cushions, the coffee table is from our college days and I’ve added our modern Burke (I think) tulip arm chairs for extra seating. The only thing I’ve ever really given a lot of thought to is adding a table for the corner of our porch. There are two sections of the porch separated by the front door and vestibule. We [...]

Fern Got a New Look

October 10, 2012
1

Hello out there! MAN, I’ve been sick again, this is twice in one month and this time I was miserable and the kids were miserable too. I’m finally starting to feel better today. Being sick has really had an effect on my October to-do list. Holy moly. Nothing is getting done. I did manage to get my fern inside before the frost came. Jeff hates this fern, HATES it. Because why would you like something that brings life and greenery into your house? I understand that the size of this fern has gotten out of control, it nearly touches the floor when I hang it in the porch off our bedroom. For real, it must be four feet in length. It was starting to get a little brown because I wasn’t a diligent waterer this summer and sometimes Jeff grilled right underneath where it was hanging in the backyard (an accident?, I think not). So it got a hair cut in a major way. Mostly this was an attempt to avoid a future fern assassination. Who hates plants anyways? Have a heart Jeff, geez.
