Deuce Cities Henhouse

Woah guys, Hello! To say this kitchen reveal is a long time in the making is an understatement, and I am thrilled to reveal our newly renovated kitchen and mudroom addition! This project has been in the works since 2017, and with the help of my trusty friend SketchUp, we were able to come up with the perfect plan for our home through countless iterations. We were asking ourselves big questions, like READ MORE

Cool Things!

Are you starting to sense a theme here?  For some reason I can't get off this black, white & grey kick, is it happening to anyone else too?  Maybe I've been reading a little too much www.doorsixteen.com, but these days my heart only longs for triangles and most things black ...
Things Done, Things To Do.

Things Done, Things To Do.

One of my big projects to finish by the end of the year was the "music room" aka the odd extra room on the back of our house that we've made home to our piano and record collection. It was a mess before, and I have plenty of pictures to ...
Polar Plunge

Polar Plunge 2012!

Another year, another New Year's Day polar plunge. The crew set out once again New Year's morning to jump in the freezy-freeze-ice-cold waters of Lake Minnetonka. For a second we thought the weather may be balmy, but as New Year's Eve turned in to New Year's Day it became clear ...

Holiday Recap!

I snapped a few photos over the holidays and thought I should share them.  All-in-all our holidays were chaotic and full to the brim.  We started off Friday night hosting Jeff's parents, brother and sister in law for our annual Christmas chinese dinner, which is pretty much the greatest tradition ...

Okay, I had to share cause I am so proud of all the work we've done and because I love this wallpaper to death. We are partaking in our annual Christmas break wallpaper tradition, so after the kids were in bed last night we marathoned it and got this feather ...

21 Stinkin’ Weeks (that’s almost 5 months!)

Can you believe my little dude is almost 5 months old?  I can't.  I haven't posted much about life with Gus so I thought I'd take a sec to show off his first 21 weeks of being alive.  This is the perfect time to do a post like this because ...

Color Crush

It shouldn't come as a surprise that I love all of the colors featured in this photo from Ferm Living.  I couldn't resist doing a puglypixel.com style "Colour Lover" piece when I came across all my favorite colors in one place.  I would also be happy to include any of these ...

Hi! I’m Alison Allen

I started Deuce Cities Henhouse in 2009 – a blog about fixing up and restoring my 110-year-old Minneapolis home and updating our worn out and out, dated Wisconsin cabin. My family and I (my husband and two boys) moved into our current home nearly ten years ago, and since then I’ve been chronicling my journey of owning, renovating, decorating and DIY-ing our home.

I’m passionate about empowering women to take on projects that they might have normally not had the confidence to do, incorporating modern design and aesthetic into my home, thoughtful design solutions, and landscaping. I’ve done it all, from easy do-it-yourself home improvement projects to full on renovations and remodels.
