Living Room Purchases!

Living Room

Yo buddies! I ordered living room furniture, can you hardly believe it? My folks took the kids on Saturday and me and Jeff got to go out and try on all the sofas. It was pretty fun, and scary, and overwhelming, and brain scrambling. After thinking I had it narrowed down to a few sofas we had last minute self doubt and considered this Sabine sofa for a bit. Although it’s beautiful (and super comfy), it’s not really what I had in mind with all this planning and after a lunch break, we decided to go with our gut and choose the Andre! Then we had to pick the chair, it was between the Cole and the Murray chairs. Although I think I like the Murray a bit better, it was time for a change and to minimize the size of the chair in the corner. The Murray was similar in size and shape to what we have now and I think the living room would really benefit from something a bit more petite, which the Cole provides with the low profile arms, and a mid century look. Don’t even get me started on fabric selecting. Another thing that I [...]

Thinking About : My Living Room

Living Room Style Board

Hey Guys, I’m still obsessing over the final plans for the living room. If you’ve been reading along you know that I’ve been compiling style boards for potential sofa, rug, and chair candidates as we’re in the market for some new living room pieces. I’ve realized that there are like a million combinations of furniture pieces that could work together for our living room. This of course is driving me insane, and for my own mind-processing-powers, I decided to lay it all out there in one nice animated gif. It’s a weird way to solve a problem, I know. BUT, doing this I discovered that my favorite chair, sofa and rug combination made themselves quickly apparent. So it worked! I still haven’t narrowed it down to “I know exactly what I want” but I have a really good idea of what I am looking for. For example, I realized that I really like that Stockholm rug, and it works as an inexpensive stop-gap option from now until when the kids are older. When that day comes along we might be able to get a way with a light colored rug like the Souk (let’s hope). I totally love the lighter [...]

How I Conquered Wood Trim

January 17, 2013
White Frames on a Dark Teal Wall

So it’s no secret that the main floor of my house is wood trim city. If the trim was not of a high quality or covered in years of gross varnish I would have painted it white the second we moved in. Instead it’s nice, and pretty, quarter sawn oak with perfect patina so it stays (even though it’s not ideal for this girl). I still need that wonderful contrast that only crisp white trim can give you. Instead of painting the trim white I went nuts and painted every frame (7 of them) in the living room white. I used the same paint that I used for my trim color upstairs, Farrow & Ball’s “All White”. Combining the nice bright white frames with light covered curtains (covering the wood trim of course) gives unity to the room and makes the wood trim not so woody. I also get that contrast that I was dying for between the white frames and my new dark teal walls (full post on the living room coming soonish). The wood trim is no longer the first thing you notice when you enter the house, it really gets pushed to the background and I can [...]

Weighing Options

Weighing Options

Well, I think we’re making progress in our decision making. I really wish the white would work for us because I really do adore it in so many others’ homes, we’re just not feeling it in the living room. I gotta remember that I have my white bedroom, and I get my white, bright and airy fix waking up every morning (dur, except for these lame winter months). That’s the one decision we’ve made. Now that white is out, blue is in. Out of the four color selections that I posted about yesterday I picked two to paint bigger swatches (aka corners) in the living room. We’re giving ‘Galapagos Turquoise’ and ‘Dragonfly’ a test drive. There’s pro’s and con’s to both and thus the decision making continues… *Please feel free to tune me out at this point because I am just a crazy lady who can’t stop thinking, dreaming, and talking about paint colors. I’m sure it’s getting a little obsessive, I know my husband thinks so. Seriously why do they send paint samples in a semi-gloss? Option Numero Uno The ‘Galapagos Turquoise’ is very blue and dark, (this is what I had envisioned the color being) but, now that [...]

4 Shades of Teal

January 9, 2013
1

I can’t kick the feeling that the new white walls against the dark wood trim remind me of every apartment that I’ve ever rented. Yes, I have enjoyed the light and bright airiness of the white during the days, and it looks especially pretty with with all my other white accents, but I’m still not 100% feeling it. After the daylight disappears and our lamps are turned on it looks very bland and unexciting. Before I ever even painted the room white I had already ordered dark teal samples from Benjamin Moore to try on the walls. I was looking for something slightly more saturated and a little bit darker than the Behr ‘Hallowed Hush’ that we had painted our living room walls prior to last week’s white attack. I was, and still am desperately seeking something fresh and new. Of the four teal swatches above, I’m most drawn to the two on the right, ‘Galapagos Turquoise’ and ‘Dragonfly’. I’m planning on painting bigger swatches on the walls later today and then beginning to weigh all the options before officially deciding on a color. I really like the darkness of the ‘Galapagos Turquoise’, this is exactly what I had envisioned [...]
