I’ve had my heart set on this baby for years, and I was so excited to bring it home to live in our basement. In case you might not be familiar, this my friends is the Shroom coffee Table from CB2... Have No Fear, Scoops is Here!

I had a new reader (Anna) get in touch with me recently. She had been in a style rut and was looking for help with the master bedroom of her 1916 South Minneapolis home. She was striving for a way to incorporate modern style while still allowing the room to ...

It’s Melting!

Yes, it's happening, it's really happening. The snow is melting and it is melting fast. The temps are warming up, and we can see little peeks of grass along the edge of the sidewalks! Ecstatic doesn't begin to describe the way we are feeling about the coming of spring. The ...

Hello Garden, Hello Spring?

Finn and I held off as long as we could, this time last year we were already knee deep in seeds and plants were sprouting up like mad in our yard. Now, I know last year was a rare occurrence, I know it's not going to be 70º all the ...

It’s Cocktail Time : The Portage

I have been searching for a way to enhance my classic winter cocktail standby, the Manhattan. This cocktail is difficult to modify, because with the correct ingredients, it is perfect. My favorite version is made with Old Overholt Rye Whiskey, Punt e Mes vermouth, and Bittercube Cherry Vanilla Bitters. A ...

Hi! I’m Alison Allen

I started Deuce Cities Henhouse in 2009 – a blog about fixing up and restoring my 110-year-old Minneapolis home and updating our worn out and out, dated Wisconsin cabin. My family and I (my husband and two boys) moved into our current home nearly ten years ago, and since then I’ve been chronicling my journey of owning, renovating, decorating and DIY-ing our home.

I’m passionate about empowering women to take on projects that they might have normally not had the confidence to do, incorporating modern design and aesthetic into my home, thoughtful design solutions, and landscaping. I’ve done it all, from easy do-it-yourself home improvement projects to full on renovations and remodels.
