My May Garden

Friendthrens. I tell ya, the only downside to having a cabin is not being able to give respect due to the gardens. They are thriving this year, but they are in desp need of some cleaning up. I have to actually schedule time in my calendar to hang out with them. I wouldn't change a thing, but I do miss toiling over them, and I hope I still get a chance to this summer... READ MORE

Whoever invented spring colds is dumb. I'm laying low today, trying to rest and get my energy back. We've been falling like dominoes. First the kids, then me, next Jeff. Ugh ...
Our Weekend

Our Weekend

Happy Monday everybody! How was your weekend? Our weekend was one of those gross sick weekends. We got nailed on Friday with a spring cold. We tried to salvage our weekend yesterday afternoon by heading out to one of our favorite MPLS spots, Minnehaha Falls. I attempted to get a ...
Bedroom Done.

Bedroom Done.

Okay, so it’s been a few months in the making but I can finally call our bedroom done! Cue the confetti cannons!! That’s how I feel about it, anyways. My story goes like this: Jeff and I have never really put a nice bedroom together for ourselves. We suck, I ...
Veggie Garden Update

Veggie Garden Update

So it's been awhile since I updated about you on the progress of our raised bed veggie garden. We built it a few weeks ago, and then began our dirt collection. I think in all we gathered 800lbs of dirt or something. Totally crazed I know. The square foot gardening ...
Cam's Baby Shower Invites

Cam’s Baby Shower Invites

This weekend I cranked out some invitations for my friend Cam's baby shower that I will be hosting in May. I'm super happy with how they turned out. I was totally inspired by Shanna Murray's decal illustrations. I knew from the get go I wanted the party to involve a ...

I Want…

I usually don't fall head over heels for rattan, even if it an iconic mid century piece, but... I can no longer resist the Franco Albini ottoman. I want it and I need it. I've been seeing this ottoman popping up more and more these days. I always have appreciated ...

Hi! I’m Alison Allen

I started Deuce Cities Henhouse in 2009 – a blog about fixing up and restoring my 110-year-old Minneapolis home and updating our worn out and out, dated Wisconsin cabin. My family and I (my husband and two boys) moved into our current home nearly ten years ago, and since then I’ve been chronicling my journey of owning, renovating, decorating and DIY-ing our home.

I’m passionate about empowering women to take on projects that they might have normally not had the confidence to do, incorporating modern design and aesthetic into my home, thoughtful design solutions, and landscaping. I’ve done it all, from easy do-it-yourself home improvement projects to full on renovations and remodels.
