Deuce Cities Henhouse

I’m feeling really good about where our cabin bedroom has started from and come to. I think we can call this reveal worthy! This is maybe my favorite space in all of the cabin. I am a big sucker for a small cozy room. Back in the early aughts, when I used to have roommates, I was always okay with taking the smallest room... READ MORE

It’s Time To Order Seeds!

Heyo! Guys, can we talk about garden stuff yet? It's March 1 tomorrow, so I think yes. This is going on my 4th garden season at our house. We moved in March of 2010 so I got to jump into the dirt right away the first year. Our yard was ...

The Hugest Spring To-Do List Ever : Part 1

I designated coat hooks for each family member, not to exceed two items. I cleaned out all the cabinets and got rid of tons of stuff that we put in there after we moved in and unpacked but have never actually used since. I hung a new shelf above the ...

My New Fiddle Leaf Fig

My entry way plan is coming together, slowly but surely. After scouring all the local garden shops, the home depot, and even ordering a baby fiddle leaf fig online (who arrived dead), I finally came across my new favorite plant this weekend on a quick trip to Ikea!! I totally ...

Cross Lake Plate

A new plate arrived in the mail today! It's been a few years since I have added to my small but perfectly sized little vintage Minnesota plate collection. I got nudged by a friend last weekend during our cabin getaway trip: "Hey why don't you have a Cross Lake plate?" ...
Brass Attack

Brass Attack

I never knew that 'Bar Keepers Friend' was a miracle when it comes to shinin' and spiffin' up old furniture. That was until I read a cool post about making your brass new and shiny looking over on Manhattan Nest. That blog has taught me a thing or two in ...

Winter Cabin

It’s Cocktail Time : The Lumberjack

Like a sunny day at the winter cabin, this drink is bright and sweet and has a comforting smokiness. When the fireplace is roaring and the cards are dealt, the Lumberjack is the perfect cocktail to quench the thirst of the mightiest lumberjack. Its origin is legendary. One day after ...

Hi! I’m Alison Allen

I started Deuce Cities Henhouse in 2009 – a blog about fixing up and restoring my 110-year-old Minneapolis home and updating our worn out and out, dated Wisconsin cabin. My family and I (my husband and two boys) moved into our current home nearly ten years ago, and since then I’ve been chronicling my journey of owning, renovating, decorating and DIY-ing our home.

I’m passionate about empowering women to take on projects that they might have normally not had the confidence to do, incorporating modern design and aesthetic into my home, thoughtful design solutions, and landscaping. I’ve done it all, from easy do-it-yourself home improvement projects to full on renovations and remodels.
